  • Asus released the new 2022 Zephyrus M16 but was quickly attacked by upset customers due to misleading information provided by the Asus team on the Best Buy website. Upset customers knocked the rating down to this brand new laptop with bad reviews.

    I have had several Zephyrus laptops all of which has had 8GB soldered on so this is no surprise.

    Whats the difference between on-board ram and the one isn't?

    • @danieltalebi1040
      @danieltalebi1040 2 года назад +5

      The onboard is soldered on, not really replaceable. The one that isn't is just an empty slot where you can add a stick of ram. Ideally 16gb onboard so that users can add 16gb of their own for a total of 32gb

    I spent several hours in text and phone call yesterday w/ Best Buy, regarding this issue, as they have my money and I am scheduled to be picking up (the laptop) this week. I found out via the Zephyrus M16 hangout on Reddit, Friday night, that those receiving the laptop from Best Buy had one soldered 8 GB RAM module instead of the 16 GB soldered RAM that the official ASUS representative said ... multiple times on Best Buy's official website was on this model. It was promised to have 16 GB on board ... and one, free, empty slot for expansion. This was asked and answered from ASUS, with their official logo. Several times.
    Many customers won't care. And I believe that Best Buy has corrected the listing (or erased the evidence?) But for me .... and for many other customers, the kind that want a 12th gen. Intel processor, a 3070 ti, a 500 nit high res screen, etc., well, these are facts that go into our purchase decision. I speculate that many of those customers DO care about these things.
    I plan to pick up and use the laptop. But whether I keep it beyond the return window, I don't know yet.
    One thing that might, might make this a little bit less of an issue is if we can learn exactly what adding a 16 GB or 32 GB DDR5 SO-DIMM does or will do to performance. (ofc. that would leave the original removable 8 GB SO-DIMM in a drawer). When uneven sticks of ram (so many laptops, esp. ASUS have 8 GB soldered (damn i am starting to hate that word)) are used it limits the potential expansion for dual channel RAM, but that was with DDR4. And I have seen some information that DDR5 might be all ram in dual channel? DDR5 uses quad channel RAM? IDK, I will have to read up on it. DDR5 might be more forgiving. (At least in dual channel.)
    Also (sorry this is so long LOL) but evidently laptop DDR5 RAM is "impossible" to buy right now.
    And that brings up supply chain issues. This is / was the first 12th generation Intel processor I had seen on a laptop, available to buy, at least with 16 x 10 aspect ratio and a 500 nit screen. Obviously if Best Buy (or anyone) HAD the correct model available I could just cancel this order and get that one. But no one does. Yet.
    So thanks for your video! Some people want and need more than 16 GB of memory, whether for virtual machines or whatever workflow or future proofing they think they need.
    Also (LOL) I promise this is the end ... my fellow early adopters ... who were mislead when ASUS and Best Buy misspoke. If this is a big deal and you are still on the fence, maybe BB will give you, idk, a gift card? To ease your pain and suffering? I think you might deserve it.

      I updated the video description to include links to the misleading Asus answers that I can find. I thought there was at least one more instance yesterday than the 3 I was able to list today but it appears to be gone ... Also, under the "Overview" section on the BestBuy product page, memory has been updated to include "8GB+8GB".

      @todoroki4418 2 года назад +1

      @lllStarLordlll Keep us updated on the performance differences between both as the 3070ti should beat the 3070 but the wattage is smaller, so I expect equal performance.

      @@lllhunterlll9644 Yes now, now only After ASUS officially said it came with only one soldered RAM 16 GB module and people ordered it and received the 8 + 8 configuration now listing is corrected.
      " I saw right on the website it said 8gig soldered on 8gig in the second slot. " Yes now it does say that. But before .... IT DID NOT!!!!!! I am glad you like gaming laptops and can read websites. But if you had read Best Buy and ASUS's own official answers on the Best Buy website ... from just a few days ago, you too, would been misinformed. So don't say or imply that it didn't.

    im picking up this laptop tomorrow , i9 3070ti and says 16gb ram at 4800mhz , can someone explain to me what the problem is ? does it come with 16gb of ram or does it not? i don't see myself using more than 16 honestly

    • @FromDesertTown
      @FromDesertTown 2 года назад +2

      If you won't use over 16, then you won't have any problems at all.
      The "problem" is for people who want to have 32GB RAM running "optimally" (with an equal amount of RAM in both modules allowing the full 32GB to run in quad-channel mode). The Best Buy model has 8 GB soldered on its motherboard, not the 16 that Asus advertises (and which Asus and Best Buy claimed about the Best Buy model for some time, until Best Buy corrected the error).
      I have 8 + 32 in mine, and the RAM speed benchmarks I ran remained about the same, so I'm not concerned about it.

      Hello there, The point of the video was not to discourage people from buying the product. The M16 is a nice laptop and if the specs fit your needs it would be a nice investment. The reason I made the video was to document how the Asus team provided misleading info to customers. The Asus team never appolgized to customers who were mislead and made financial purchasing decisions based on their comments.

      If you don't play demanding games or if you're on a budget then the TUF lineup would be a good option. If you have the funds and play triple A titles and would like to achieve high graphic settings then you would want to invest in an ROG as they would have better specs.

This video has been posted a while back but I ended up returning the laptop after trying to work with Asus and basically getting to the point where they were not willing to admit anything wrong on their end nor were they willing to work with me on some kind of free or discounted upgrade. I did end up purchasing another Asus laptop which was fully up-gradable so I was good with that.

    The real issue with 8GB soldered is the dual channel memory. Since memory needs to be the same for dual channel to operate optimally you’re limited to 16GB ram on dc. Of course you can add a larger ram stick but this isn’t optimal for dc operation.
    I should also mention that buying the additional ram separately isn’t cost effective and good luck finding ddr5 for your laptop.

    well.. just got the 2022 m16. it says PCIe4 but the drive will max out at 3500mb/s in crystal mark... meaning its gen 3... specs on the drive is gen 4 though. wonder if they installed it in the wrong slot.

    • @FromDesertTown
      @FromDesertTown 2 года назад +4

      Actually, the drive IS a PCIe 4.0 drive. It's a Micron 2450 series 1TB drive (model# MTFDKBA1T0TFK-1BC1AABGA)
      Unfortunately, it's a rather slow PCIe 4.0 drive. You are correct that PCIe 3.0 drives are capable of reaching the same speeds.
      At least I can confirm that the PCIe slot IS a PCIe 4.0 slot, because a Samsung 980 Pro gets 7000 MB/s sequential reads in it.

    Asus sends reviewers different laptops. Reviewers then give praise to laptop specs you cannot buy. Last year's M16 1) would die from a windows update bios flash and 2) was reviewed by everyone with a 3070 and you could only get the 3060 version.
