  • In this episode, we finally start taking the last few steps toward a long-term goal: steel! There are still several steps to steelmaking, as well as a lot of time (and fire!), so while we won't have any of the shiny metal in our hands today, we make plenty of progress and build not one, but three cementation furnaces!

    I can definitely feel a style of early industrial period England emerging here. Perfectly fits the technology level of late game VS, the colour palette available, and the biome. Can't wait to see the new industrial buildings that each extra technology piece will bring!

    For some reason it has never occurred to me to access the fueling area under the cementation furnace from the front rather than the back. Clever. Also, a hard-earned lesson for those who have yet to advance to steel - when making and loading your first furnace, take care to only ever click on the FRONT coffin piece and not to accidentally interact with the back coffin piece… or your ghostly block-placing guide will become very confused and the process will become much more complicated.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад +1

      I got the idea for front-side fueling from seeing someone else's design on the Vintage Story Discord server! I saw it and was like, "What have I been missing out on?"
      If you click on the wrong part of the coffin, you should be able to click on it again to disable the overlay, and then click on the correct part of the coffin. I haven't tried that, so it's just speculation. Have you tried that as a solution?

    • @talespinnergames8404

      @@Kurazarrh Yes, I did get there eventually… after a lot of confusion about why my cementation furnace that had been complete a moment before suddenly thought it had missing blocks! The little window at the front of the furnaces was inspired. Looking forward to seeing how this build turns out - I had assumed you would build it as an extension of sorts to the blacksmith, but it looks like it'll be it's own thing!
    Still, I wonder why they decided to make steel furnaces so large? From what I can gather, it's perfectly possible to produce steel in a bloomery irl? Just adding to the challenge I suppose?

    • @streetwind.
      @streetwind. 2 года назад +4

      They are modeled after real cementation furnaces that were built and used pretty much like this.
      There are a variety of different ways to make steel, which yield different kinds of steel, take different times to process, different amounts of resource investment and so on. The VS team likely picked one intentionally that was markedly different from iron processing. Not just to prevent mistakes ("awww I forgot one detail and now all I got was iron"), but also to keep it varied and interesting, to teach the player something new, and to give them another reason to add another building to the base.

    • @chrisr6794
      @chrisr6794 2 года назад

      @@streetwind. Appreciate the insight! Yeah, I have no doubt the devs were trying to keep things interesting and partition steel off behind something that requires an extra level of sophistication. But still, it's clear this style of furnace is taking a significant step towards industrialization and mass production - which is certainly something I'd love to see more of in VS! Just seems like a relatively large step forward technologically for a guy who still has to fire his clay in a hole in the ground. :p

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! When I realized I was being a dummy, I had to make the window just a little snazzy!
      As for making steel... technically speaking, fueling a bloomery with coal/charcoal would technically make some very low-grade steel. Probably barely above iron. My (amateur, academic) understanding is that a lot of steel produced prior to the 17th century was done by means of working the iron in a forge, sometimes purposely adding charcoal dust. The cementation furnace is an actual process for mass-producing steel that was first put into use around 1720, and it actually produces blister steel ingots. The Wikipedia article on the cementation process has everything--and Vintage Story follows it very closely!

    • @Gorfinhofin
      @Gorfinhofin 2 года назад +1

      @@Kurazarrh It works! If a block breaks, the other furnace pauses processing until you fix it. And if you have them pretty much synced up that shouldn't matter too much. You'll only waste a couple pieces of coal. And especially with tier 3 bricks it should happen very rarely.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  4 месяца назад +1

      While you technically CAN do that, it's not very good at all. Fire damage, no matter the source, is quite weak, and outside of a cementation furnace, coal piles actually burn pretty quickly. If you really want to do a fire-based drifter killing chamber, you're much better off just using fire pits.
