Vintage Story Guide - 1.16 - Episode 52: Industrialize! Entering the Steel Age!

- In this episode, while our iron is being converted into steel in our cementation furnaces, we break ground on the foundry around it. Our goal is to get the structure itself built and detailed; the grounds and interior will come later. But while we're working, our furnaces finish their hot work, and we finally break open the stone coffins to reveal: real steel!

Watching this I could imagine myself designing the kilns based on the Castle Point Lime Kilns in Lindisfarne, designing the chimneys based on the Foss Islands chimney in York, and designing the factory building based on industrial era buildings in Manchester. This series has been very inspiring!
I think you should upgrade from imagining, and start doing it! That sounds like a terrific design idea! :)
I've binged my way through your series and have to say this is the first time I've seen a completely clear, patient explanation of using the pro pick. I feel like I know what to do now and what the results mean, when to use the two modes. I've seen other people explain it but it never sunk in for some reason. I haven't played VS (or any games) for more than a year (family stuff going on) but am downloading the latest full version and starting a new world for the first time since 1.14. Thank you for all the tips and ideas, and I look forward to more great videos on your channel in the future.
Hey that's great to hear! It's a good feeling, being able to inspire someone else to pick up an old passion! And I'm very glad my propick episode was helpful! It's easy to use once you know how to read it (and having the prospector info more helps!) but can be esoteric at first. Thanks for commenting and letting me know!
Always excited to see your notification!
:D Likewise, I'm always happy to read your comments!
Wow what a build, I love it. It's real skill when yo can make a belching factory look gorgeous.
Haha, thank you! I just think of the smokestacks as... painting the sky with smoky paint! As a bonus, it's great for your lungs! Right?
Beautiful build again. I am loving this series. Can't wait to see the update. Thanks for the videos!
:D Thank you! I'm glad you like it!!
Very informative, thankies!
Love what you did with the smokestacks ^.^ Steelmaking seems like such a pain x.x
Hehe, thank you! Yeah, steelmaking is a huge time and resource sink... There's definitely some argument for just using iron sometimes!!!
That is DIRTY! Whoever coded that is a dirty, dirty man.
You didn't include a timestamp, but I'm guessing you're referring to the burn times on the different coal piles? If so, yeah... I don't understand why it was done that way.
@@Kurazarrh Yup, the burn times. That's a big surprise.
Loved the design pallet of your steel foundry, the little flourish at the ends of the foundry stacks doesn't seem like much but adds a lot. You have got a beautiful kingdom there well done.
Hey, thank you so much for your kind comment! Sometimes just adding one little detail that pops can really help define a build!
If any of you fine people want to ask this chap a question that gets answered in the video, comment the question, followed by the hashtag: #20Kuestions
He'll confirm if he sees it, this is the same with all of his videos up to this point. Again the hashtag is #20Kuestions get thinking !
Damn, that turned out sick. Reminds me a bit of "Iron Keep" from Dark Souls 2
:D Thank you!!!
I'm so excited to learn from your series, and see the amazing things you will make with every episode!
:D Thank you!! I'm glad to hear you can take away inspiration from these episodes!
Another great episode! I Really love the design of your steel foundry! I was Very inspired by your interior design in your house for my own build. Really looking forward to the interior on the foundry!
Thank you! I'm always excited to hear about my designs inspiring others! :D Let the creative juices flow!
the flat bits at the top of this build is absolutely brilliant, they actually look so good.
Thank you! I was inspired by a friend who plays mostly in creative mode; they had some similar caps on their blocks.
@@Kurazarrh well that's the best person to get inspired by, somebody who has no limits to blocks and a friend. Is the friend a RUclips friend or just a friend that plays. If not a RUclipsr... possible co-op? Obviously this might be an over step but if you don't ask you don't get lol
@@TheLewylew Ah, they're not a RUclipsr; I met them on the Aura Fury Vintage Story server a while back!
@@Kurazarrh how is that server? I've been thinking to join but I have no idea how tbh
@@TheLewylew Very friendly, inclusive place. I believe you can apply by going to their website (I don't have it on me, but googling it should bring it up) and filling out their form.
Right as I'm getting ready for work.... I think I can fit it in lol
Surely your boss will understand if you're a few minutes late, right? XD
@@Kurazarrh I might be able to swing something lol
Same here bruh lol . I was about to go on with my epigaster diseases grind on the book and this bomb dropped lol
@@Kurazarrh I got promoted and I guess that means go home for the rest of the day. So I'm gonna watch this on my TV and relax lol
@@skrepon13 Hey that's awesome! Congrats! Now that makes me want a promotion-vacation! :D
This is good afternoon.
After 5 burning it should be 100%.
I edited before notice your answer. 😅
In my experience, if you don't give it a little extra, it will stop at 99%, unless the burn time was lengthened in 1.16. It appears to be due to the delay in ignition: when you light one stack of coal, it takes a few seconds for the second stack to light. I haven't otherwise done any steelmaking in 1.16, so if the burn times were increased to account for this loss, I wasn't aware of it.
@@Kurazarrh maybe that's the case. I often forget about furnance.
@@Kurazarrh btw. You gave me inspiration "what to do after you have steel".
Build, build and make your home area nice.
To this days i was like, make this eficient and its enough.
@@chaszaszman_9868 Yeah, I think a lot of people kind of stop after they get steel, since there isn't any further progression, and there aren't any repeatable time/resource sinks (a.k.a. "endgame content") in Vintage Story yet. There are still some additional systems to explore (distilling, making bleu cheese, ilmenite mining & tier-3 refractory bricks), but also upgrades to the house. I am also planning for a journey to the deep south at some point in the future, so we'll have to see what that holds!
Alright, finally finished the episode. Please don't take this as me telling you want to do. It's your channel. I personally would like to see a little more of the daily tasks. Maybe just a few minutes of time lapse or something, but seeing more of the daily tasks you do would be helpful for understanding how a day normally goes for you in game. I also think the dry stone basalt walls were overhanging just a little over the base stairs. I could be wrong, I just couldn't quite see it very well.
Thanks for the feedback! I've been cutting back on showing the daily tasks now that we're in the late game, since it's basically repeating content from earlier episodes. But if there's some demand for it, I might start slipping some things back in.
The reality is, I tend to do most of the drudge work in between episodes now, so that I can mentally focus on a project without distractions. I'm finding that if I don't do that, I end up with 4-5 hours of video to slog through, which means 2 evenings of editing videos instead of just 1.
Would it be helpful/enlightening to have an episode dedicated to "what a day in the life of late-game Vintage Story" looks like, or are you more interested in little glimpses of the day during projects? (Which is mostly avoiding drifters & sleeping through high-rift-activity nights!)
@@Kurazarrh That's a good question. I personally am just curious about the daily grind. I've been watching the last few episodes asking myself What about the crops?! But I also kind of like the idea of a video dedicated to the daily stuff. Whatever is easiest for you is best. You mentioned crop rotation in your crops video, but I don't think we've actually seen you do it as it was between episode work for you. It's clearly a straight forward thing, but I'm interested at least. I know you do a lot of wood collecting for charcoal, and I know you do a lot of material gathering. Maybe you can combine a larger ama video with the daily stuff. Tend to the crops, answer some questions, cut some trees down, answer a few more, head to your quarry ect ect.
@@skrepon13 Haha, well the answer to the crops question in at least the last several videos is: nothing, since it's winter! But I get what you mean.
I'm about to unload my latest batch of #20Kuestions in a new video, but maybe once I get 5-8 more questions from viewers, I can put together a "life in the day of a seraph" video and do some daily tasks while answering questions. I do also have a few slower-paced episodes in the works (smaller projects), so maybe I could instead fit some of those tasks around the main meat of those episodes. I'll have to see what I can work out. Thanks again!
@@Kurazarrh hahaha, if I remember right that thought came up during the greenhouse build, but you make a fair point with it being winter and all. Awesome. Looking forward to the next videos!
@@Kurazarrh I think it would bring more body into the video if it showed you living as well as big projects I do agree with that, I don't think you have to film everything but cooking food is always a good one and maybe one other thing.
Nice as always ! I do indeed think that compared to all of the journey making steel plate aromor seems trivial . Also
#20kuestions :
Are you planning on making a collection of the exotic foods on vintage story ? Itd be a banger IMO
Yeah, once you have the steel itself, making the armor is a breeze!
Thanks for your submission to #20Kuestions! It's been added to the list! :)
@@Kurazarrh thanks bruh apriciate it 😄
#20Kuestions After you finish reading all of the content in vintage story, what are you going to read to us next?
Thanks for your question submission! It's been added to the list!
@@Kurazarrh I've heard you need more so I might have to think of some... And also get people to think of some too... Need some Kuestion generation going
This is a vibe rn its 12am its raining and its chill god i love this channel!
Altho hopefully you branch into different content too like gundams? Since u told me u built some and why not ya know? Idk tho but i still do enjoy this series!
Thank you! Rain sounds really nice to me right now! (Very hot here today... but will be worse this weekend!)
@@Kurazarrh ahh dang dw it'll rain after summer or sooner
I should wait to post this on your new video, hopefully tomorrow lol, but I was wondering if you would be interested in doing an encyclopedia type videos in the future? Go over specific items in the game or groups of them in a quick five minute video. Saltpeter for instance. It's everywhere, but never seems to get used.
Maybe if I had more free time! I've said it before in reply to other comments, but I am at basically 100% capacity at the moment, between work, real life, and other obligations and hobbies. Additional videos just aren't feasible at the present time. Since this series isn't just a tutorial, I really only bring up materials as they come up naturally.
Also, the game has its own, built-in encyclopedia. ;) Certainly, there are some unorthodox and creative uses for materials that aren't immediately apparent, and I like to focus on those more, since you can usually find out about an item's or material's fundamental utility by hovering the mouse over it and pressing H!
@@Kurazarrh Perfect. Really can't wait to play this game. I'll probably be reading through a lot of the wiki as I get closer to getting a PC.
@@skrepon13 Awesome. I hope you can get your hands on a PC soon! :)
VS should seriously include that large kiln from the mod as vanilla. You can\t expect people to advance into the steel age and still bury pottery in the ground. It's as stupid as not having air.
Oh man, I would LOVE a more advanced kiln and the ability to just fire it with wood/peat/coal. I hate going through 2.5 stacks of grass, 2 stacks of sticks, and 64 units of whatever fuel I have just to make a couple stacks of bricks that don't even come out to a full stack of brick blocks! @.@
@@Kurazarrh Especially when you have to empty a larger and larger area around you of any bush or tree just for sticks!! God I hate sticks.
@@somewhereupthere785 Once you start planting your own trees, finding the sticks isn't the issue... it's how much time and how many shears you need to go through in order to collect them! @.@
have you considered turning off in game music when recording and then adding in a music track later? I find the audio of the music getting chopped up takes a bit out of the videos. Thanks for the hard worh tho, the vids are enjoyable!
I've been experimenting with that. Only trouble I have with it is that it takes more time to edit the videos, and I'm pretty much already at 100% capacity. I'll see what I can do though. I know what you mean!
@@Kurazarrh Do you know when you will be cutting something out because it might be best to maybe just turn it off when you do the building parts then turn it back on after you finish. that might solve the issues of it cutting in and out.
@@TheLewylew Nah, the answer is probably to just play without music and add it in later. *cries in no music* I get tongue-tied a lot, so I usually have to cut these videos to ribbons!
@@Kurazarrh it seems like you tell us when you are going to start building so I thought I'd you faded there, turn off the music and add some suck beats then turn it back on once you start talking again. That would pretty much solve the issue. Maybe I'm wrong
@@TheLewylew I'm usually too far in the groove of playing to think about it! Lol
just a question what gamemode are you playing on defaul or wilderness survival?
I'm in a standard survival, not wilderness. I made a slight tweak at the beginning, too. The first episode shows the game settings I used, plus the change.
