    Fantastic footage. Back in 2003 we chartered a train such as this to take us from an eastern province all the way back to Havana after a tour of the last of steam in the sugar plantations. I am 99% sure that the car was the same as this, ex Canadian railways I believe. In Cuba, while everything else is falling to bits, they always find the money to keep their mainline tracks straight and safe for fast running. On the way back to Havana we hit a goat at about 60 mph and came out of the back end doing cartwheels. That goat ended up on a few dinner tables with rice and beans. Tony, London, UK.

    • @davidraber
      @davidraber  6 лет назад +1

      Enjoy the China ones while you can. As it turns out, they are not lasting. Now, it is not the Chinese units that are being mothballed. The main EMD maintenance/rebuild facility in Moron is back at full capacity. They are going to keep maintaining the EDM fleet because they are much better in the long run. The RDC cars also get their heavy maintenance there.

    • @EMDSD14R
      @EMDSD14R 6 лет назад

      Oh so the china diesels are wearing out faster? Well EMD units have been known for their durability and quality. So that means they'll be fixing and rebuilding more of the EMD's. What about the Alco/MLW units? I know they are reliable and are still running. So does that also mean more of the RDC's will be powered again? Thanks for the info!

      It was all over Cuba. The opening was the furthest West we got, which was only about 50km west of Havana on the line to Guanajay. The rest of the trip was East. We took the main-line all to way to Santiago. The nice downhill section was into Santiago. Before that we took a very small branch line to a tiny village on the north coast, Manati, then all the way south to Trinidad (the RDC car only went as far as Sancti Spiritus), then up to Holguin (the night shot was at the junction of the main line and the branch to Holguin) and finally on to Santiago. It was an amazing two week chartered tour of Cuba by the last remaining RDC car still in service on the island.

      All Budd cars were originally made by the Budd Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Some were purchased by both CN and CP, but those were all made in the USA.
      Four of the 18 RDC cars that Cuba bought were used cars from CN and CP. The rest of Cuba's fleet came new from the Budd factory in Philadelphia.

    • @davidraber
      @davidraber  6 лет назад

      Cuba has the distinction of having the most miles of railroad per square mile of land of any country in the world. All if it was built by investments in pension plans from U.S. companies long before Fidel.
      Most of Cuba's RDC units were bought new, directly from Budd, again financed with bonds purchased by U.S. pension funds. All Budd cars were from the U.S., the Budd factory in Philadelphia, to be exact.
      This particular one, 2301, is the last remaining RDC car in operation in Cuba. I was able to walk through the main maintenance and overhaul facility in Moron where they work on Cuba's rather extensive fleet other United States diesels from the 1950's. At this facility, they have 9 other RDC cars whose sole purpose is to provide parts to keep 2301 in operation.

      that 2301 has the same window and headlight distinctions as the ones we have here in Canada.

    • @davidraber
      @davidraber  6 лет назад

      True, but what you see here was the standard Budd configuration. Several railroads had brackets on the doors on each end to mount an additional headlight on the front or a larger red light on the back (Southern Pacific, for example).

    Gostei é uma pena que é uma ferrovia parada no tempo, nada de modernização os desvios ainda são todos manuais ao invez ser todos elétricos como no Brasil. Aqui tudo é moderno até locomotivas modelos AC44i

    Mantenimiento ah las vías 🛤 ferroviarias, en lo particular haría un censo de las viviendas que están ah orillas de las vías del tren oh carreteras y realizaría un plan de viviendas sociales pueden ser casas oh edif: de tres cuatro plantas con tres cuatro habitaciones con closets empotrados salón comedor cocina zona de lavandería dos baños con buena ventilación si son edif:con ramplas en vez de escaleras por cualquier problema de movilidad y si son casas con unas zonas ajardinadas zona para comercio centro de salud Iglesia ⛪ colegio en fin que tengan cubiertas sus necesidades cancha deportiva y una vez hecho esto derivaria toda esa línea de viviendas para dar una mejor imagen del paisaje.

      Minimalism, for sure, but with much more of a can-do and get-it-done outlook. They have always faced a lack of resources.

    El daño q se le ha hecho a mi Cuba! no tiene nombre!
    Entre otros muchos la destruccion de un Pais Democratico, Prospero y feliz!
    De q habia barrios insalubres, los habia!
    De q habia pobresa, la habia, corrupcion, etc., etc., pero... todo eso se estaba mejorando!
    ...Y se podia erradicar!
    Hoy en la martirizada Cuba todo es tierra arrazada!
    Familias separadas, muertos, y Exilados todavia huyendo a como sea de aquel infierno en q convirtieron esa Cuba Bella!
