    I'm a machinist since 1999; I usually don't complain about my work nor my working environment as I consider myself pretty lucky to have acquired my skills and experiences from different companies. Seeing these souls working without any protection of any sort and in such not clean areas makes me teary.
    Wishing them the best in life.

      Well, there are cast cranks used still today, but they are Nodular iron (Sg) precision machined and induction heat treated to harden the bearing surfaces, but these are never used in diesel engines, only petrol engines.

    • @duckbizniz663
      @duckbizniz663 Год назад +1

      Hi Vitor. Are you saying that these crankshafts come out of iron casting mold, but are not reheated and cooled rapidly which would harden them? How do you know these crankshafts are not reheated and cooled quickly? Do they look a certain way and you can tell from their appearance?

    • @vitor900000
      @vitor900000 Год назад +7

      @@duckbizniz663 Hardening and forging are different things.
      Hardening only effects the surface of the part while forging effects the whole grain structure of the part significantly increasing its strength.
      I can tell it was casted by the surface roughness/pitting and the parting lines 1:06.

      @@danielsch8434 There is NO industrial diesel engines manufactured that have cast iron crankshaft, hardened or not. You will automotive petrol engines with nodular iron crankshafts, some are surfaced hardened, i.e. induction hardened at the journal. Good quality diesel engine crankshafts are nitride hardened. So, can you name any industrial diesel engines that have cast iron non hardened crankshafts? This is the reality of the process for finishing a rough forged crankshaft these days. There was a time when General Motors offered an unfinished crankshaft and a machinist would spend up to 2 days getting the counter weights and journals cut concentric to one another. At some point in this video they will actually put the piece on a crankshaft grinding lathe to finish it to original specifications

    I have seen some crankshaft manufacturing for 6-cylinder 3.5 liter engines. The crankshafts made here a much larger, for trucks not passenger vehicles. BMW crankshaft manufacturing seem to be more automated and there seems to be more quality control which are also automated. So where would this production method fall under in terms of durability and precision of specifications. Crankshaft has to work within an engine with other parts. So would this manual production be more accurate or less accurate?

    Crankshaft made by BEST STEEL and highly accurate WITH balancing but THIS crankshaft is CAST IRON. It can work ONLY FEW days.

    the most hilarious part is the balancing of the crankshaft . all tolerances are in 2 fingers spec.

    This might be how they make crankshafts in third world countries. That's a manual lathe. That's not mass production, that's cave man tech at it's finest. GM Ford and Chrysler do things a lot more modern

      I wouldn't expect the engines to last long. As a machinist I'm impressed how hard these men work, but they act like they have a gun to their heads. The crankshaft will suffer from this high pressure to make it fast. What some watching might not understand is that the guy was doing a straightening operation AFTER the precision grinding. The roughing operations on the lathes were warping the shafts, pretty badly, so the straightening op with the hydraulic press should be done prior to grinding also. I have to wonder under these working conditions, how many disabled, unemployable men are walking the streets.

    О точности металлообработки, особенно при сверлении, говорить не приходиться. Вряд ли у этих деталей большой срок службы.

    Why no revolving tailstock centre! I know it costs money,....but that is just stupid to not have! Wear on fixed centre, plus chatter finishes, oh well, whatever! Cheers
