I appreciated the final QC, counting the marks on the shaft to make sure it was set for 27 teeth. Also, using double cheater bars to torque the hold down nut was a nice touch!
It’s really not good workmanship- in fact it’s more of a video of what you can still accomplish if you do almost everything wrong. If you’re giving the compliment because you think people in this part of the world aren’t capable of doing better than that is quite bigoted. If you’re saying it because you don’t know any better then that’s at least an honest attempt to give a compliment. Either way this would be a great video to show kids taking machine trades vocation, and see if how many things they can point out he’s doing wrong.
Its nice to see the Baby Webster and Bennet vertical borer still being used in the world, as an apprentice I grew up in the 1960s using the 36" table model the guy is using and ended up on the 144" table model. We soon learned that if you used the correct feeds and speeds, with correctly ground tools with chip breakers, That the material would come off in chips not string like in the video, very dangerous and the easiest way to loose fingers or get dragged into the machine. Still very interesting and like any heavy engineering shop way different from the world of CNC.
I worked for a company that supplied the tooling to Delphi and other steering companies in Michigan. I always heard chips were better than strips, as well. I also fabricated industrial vacuums to collect the material, which chips were definitely easier for that 😉

Amazing! The guys know what they are doing. I hope they look after themselves what safety concerns. Here in New Zealand you can't even cycle without a safety helmet.
Remember where those original machine tools were from, I guess it must have been from Great Britain, the founders of the Industrial Revolution, but fair play to the yanks they are extremely quick to recognise and use new technology.

It reminded me of my youthful years when in communist Poland I was learning to be a turner and miller using similar equipment. Greetings to people who still have such great skills to operate such machines. Because now it's just a program and start, and the rest will do itself.
Every time I watch those kinds of videos, it’s really exciting. They're probably doing the best they can under the circumstances, but unfortunately, from an engineering perspective, all that gears is just junk.🤷♀️
Love the safety standards.. No hearing protection no vision protection not even close to safely shoes with all the steel shavings all over the floor.. Great job otherwise

Watched this video, and have some concerns on the machining process: 1) Has anyone given thought to the damage those lifting chains can cause those machine gears. Wouldn't nylon straps be better? 2) Has anyone heard of a table? Why place these finely machined gears on a dirty floor? 3) The fella who places the large wrench on the big nut, then uses a pipe as leverage -- he just slams the pipe in without concern for damaging a gear. 4) These gears have to be tempered at some point. But not shown. and 5) I see some machining damage at the top of the lower gear at the end (31:25). Can anyone else see it?
I really admire and high looks on the fabricator of gear cutter. Its great as with out the cutter there would be no helical gear depending on its usage. Your a great fabricator snd great worker .
The heavy machining done good take some safety during work or job protection needed but all the small scale industry can not purchase all instrument is truth like this vedio & the great skill required to work this environment.

They give absolutely nothing for protection, cleanliness and order !!!
But they really have skills !

Amazing machining. But I have to say, loose clothes and spinning things never mix. Be safe!
And their steel toed work boots…..
Nothing about the protective footwear bryan?

Good to see they're wearing their safety sandals 😂
I would to send them some steel toe work boots.
I would think the steel shavings would get into the sandals and irritate the feet.
it's ok ... they were not comfortable with their slippers... 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I love long shirts near rotating mechanisms. OMG! they are so hard working but no safety!
👍👍👍👍👍💞💞💞💞💞
That would just get ripped off easily - hopefully.
I like your vertical lathe. I run a lathe for a living too very good work.
We,the US have all the advanced technology on all fields of manufacturing.
But it was the men who were Conventional Machinist who built this country.

Bless their hearts.

Love the DTI or was it an edge finder lol, only messing these guys do a top job with the tackle they have 👍🏴
man, you have really strong hand to do this job.

Que tal capacidad de los Sres. TORNEROS.. SOn admirables.
Io da ex metalmeccanico mi piaceva di più lavorare come fanno loro in manuale e non con i cnc e programmi selca ecc . Complimenti a loro
Beautiful piece of work.

Olá amigos. Perfeito. 'Nada é difícil e sim tudo é trabalhoso '. Parabéns a todos.
I often wondered where our old manuel machines ended up. It was like that in my day I mean no safety shoes though we did use coolent on the lathes.

I always wonder how they made those gears now I know .
And the kicker, it's planned obsolescence too! Does that mean when it heats up it cracks? Yes, and brittle too.

cutting fluids were only used when they grooved the gearing in that gear lathe.
