It happens all too often. The call of a a person going absolutely crazy and covered in the bodily fluid of their choice. Long story short, problem is cuffed and stuffed, with YOUR cuffs on them.
They get into booking and you don a pair of rubber gloves to take the cuffs off of your new friend. You get the cuffs off and go to put them away when it hits you. "These are disgusting" you say to yourself. But what to do now?
Blood bourne pathogens are a serious concern to first responders of every stripe. HIV/Aids might get the top billing. But, they need warm and wet environments to transmit. Hepatitis C can live for long periods of time in DRIED blood, and is just as deadly.
Those if us who use handcuffs for a living, police, Sheriff, Security, corrections, probation, parole, ect. have a unique problem in that handcuffs are intentionally designed to be impossible to take apart for cleaning.
Sadly some people just put the cuffs back in a pouch because they either didn't think to clean their cuffs, or don't know how to and are embarrassed to ask.
As a field training officer (FTO) my job is to pass on the tips of the trade for law enforcement. You won't find how to disinfect handcuffs in any manual. Which is unfortunate. I think this should be part of every handcuffing class/instruction.

I would recommend a rinse in clean water after the soak to remove the bleach from inside to lessen the chance of corrosion. The WD40 may get it mostly out, but a soak in clean water for 30 minutes would also be a good idea before drying and lubing.
Finally actually had reason to use this method last night, and none of my fellows had ever seen the "grab in a glove and wrap therein" method. Blew their minds!!
Also : spritzed them down in Spray Nine while inside the glove cocoon so they would be even easier to clean afterward.

Not very fuckin intelligent are they...
My cleaning & sanitation method is almost identical, however I use my oven & an old cooling rack with the heating elements off (275 F works great around in 15 minutes, and if you watch an episode of DS9 and forget they're in there for 44 minutes 22 seconds that won't hurt anything!) to thoroughly dry after towel drying. After that I use dry graphite in a 'puff tube' as lubricant. Then I use a silicone gun cloth to help protect the finish. I also occasionally wipe my keys with the silicon cloth, not really sure if that does anything to keep parts moving any better or not, but probably doesn't hurt.
I was thinking that a graphite lubricant and a silicone gun cloth would work wonders and help avoid have to wipe down the excess oil issue, as for placing them in the oven to get rid of the water that is akin to how we clean cast iron so I know it will work well.
Do keys once in a while too! Lock can get crud in em too!
If water is used to clean handcuffs they need to dry completely, both inside and out. The internals will rust/corrode otherwise. This will cause the action to be inhibited and will eventually lead to the internals seizing, or worse, failing. WD-40 is not a good idea to displace the water as it will attract dust/dirt/etc which will eventually gum up the internals. However, if WD-40 is used blast the internals with a lot of compressed air to get as much WD-40 out. A lot of brake cleaner (autoparts store/aisle) will also be effective at removing the water/cleaning (not disinfecting) and will evaporate without any residue, but may damage the finish and can damage some rubber/plastic. Placing the handcuffs in a low heat oven or blast it with a heatgun/blow dryer will help dry them quickly; just ensure the handcuffs have no non-metal alloy components. Also, do not actually use oil on the internals for the same reason WD-40 is not to be used; oil will attract and retain debris. A very light oil rub on the external areas will help prevent rust. Instead, use a dry lubricate such as graphite dust or teflon for the internals.

Bleach, then boil in 50/50 water vinegar for 10 minutes. Place in oven at around 250 until dry. Lube with silicone bike chain spray. It will break down any rust and the silicone spray lubricates without collecting the dust like oils do.

I followed instructions with my issues peerless blues cuff it created a weird rust spot issue on them and caused the blueing to fade.... just FYI carful if I have blued peerless.
I wonder if this would damage cuffs that have plastic parts such as Speedcuffs/ASP Rigids

I use lithium white grease instead of the oil, stays on longer and not as messy.
Unfortunately I have asthma I cannot use clorox or WD-40. Can I use Vinager and dawn soap. What other kind of oil can I use besides chemicals.
Acetone works great, it’ll kill off anything that may be on the cuffs, and it’ll evaporate in fully in a few minutes after removal without causing rust.
My mom just got me a pair but I'm 13 will that ruin the color

Great info, I love the glove trick. I use rubbing alcohol instead of bleach water, the cuffs dry fast, alcohol kills everything that might be on them and doesn't rust the internals... then lime you said ... a little wd40, wipe them down and all set.
I did want to ask your opinion about ASP cuffs... I like them because they open larger for big guys and are rounded, but after rolling around in a parking lot with some meth head the plastic was all scuffed up and eventually cracked and broke. Thanks again for the vids!
New ASP ultra cuffs, no plastic, all aluminium. Far better cuff, lovely to use. The newer Plus models have a double lock you can engage with your thumb rather than the key. Currently trialing a set, look and feel good.

@@riskysway2542 I just use a little spray bottle of rubbing alcohol and wipe them down really well. They dry fast and then I wipe them down with a rag and little gun oil!

I use Ballistol mostly. Its non toxic, odor free. I use it for firearms & knives too. I own a set of S&W cuffs, red-weatherproof. I dont like them & plan to get either the latest asp chain style or the highly rated peerless. The wide style.
ASP cuffs are convenient. Be careful though with them bending and not latching properly if you find yourself fighting someone into cuffs.
I would opt for the heavier steel format. I have read the Texas rangers & fbi use the peerless brand. Regular Smith & Wesson restraints seem to small for regular size males. I have a set of stainless galls.com brand hinged cuffs too. I kept them from a old federal post I had years ago.
+DL Lambert I've never had an issue with Smith cuffs being too small. Peerless makes a very good cuff as well. We have them in the prisoner van and they've worked great every time I've needed them. You might want to check out Hiat/monadnock/Safariland (sorry all the same company and I don't know which name they are stamping on the cuffs this week) they also make excellent cuffs.
On a side not I wouldn't be too concerned with what brand of anything X agency uses. Most of the time that comes down to which brand gave them out for free, which one had the lowest price, or who gave the better kickback. Go to any of those agencies who issue out everything and require it be the only gear used. You'll find a bunch of guys all bitching about half their issued stuff.
Did your black handcuffs rust up. I just clean my Smith&wesson 100 the way you did and there was rust all over them, and they now have chipped off paint marks. Are they still usable?

Question: Unless I missed the reason for using both products, if WD40 lubricates as well, why use the oil afterwards?
WD40 is not an effective long term lubricant.
Do you carry oversized cuffs, and if so what kind of case do you carry them in? Working without a partner, I don't have the luxury of having someone got to the patrol car and getting them while the other watches the subject.

Would you do a video on maintaining all your duty gear? I made an arrest last night, and when I went to put the cuffs on, they wouldn't turn. I thought someone had double locked my cuffs in my case, and luckily I carry two sets on my belt. After coming back to your video here, I found out it was just rust in my hinge point.... I didn't know nickel could rust, but I'm just a dumb grunt. Now I am worried about something else failing. Can I lean on your experience, and ask you to do a video on maintaining all the gear? (Baton, CEW, flashlight(?), OC(?), the belt and holster...etc.)
+Bob Kawthun Sorry to hear about the cuffs. I'm not sure there is much to do a video on. I've never really had to do more than spray a little remoil on my batons or the hood of a holster. Even then it was only after they got VERY dirty and had to be cleaned with a hose. I've found most stuff out today made by major manufacturers is mostly bullet proof. Handcuffs and guns being major exceptions. The ECD's either work, or don't. There really isn't much to do with them but wipe them off or send them in for service. If I think of something along those lines I'll definitely do a vid though.

Hey that answers the question I had anyway! I only asked because I heard another officer talking about maintaining the leather belts/pouches and other gear. After the snafu with my cuffs I want to make sure I'm prepared in the future. I hadn't really thought about maintaining gear other than my weapon, so I wasn't sure if there even was something that I could do. I appreciate the response, it definitely helps those of us without the experience or population to support training that we need. Live Long and Prosper!
+Bob Kawthun I don't use much actual leather anymore, leather is essentially impossible to sanitize. At least more than once or twice before it is destroyed. I always used to just use nikwax then put shoe polish on it when I did. I'm not sure that's the right thing to do though.
My police academy in Massachusetts told us to use powdered graphite to lube cuffs so that's still what I use to this day.
I've had bad luck with that. I have to clean my cuffs frequently and the graphite doesn't do much for rust.

Which cuffs are the best? ASP or S&W? Chain or Hinged?
Depends on what you want. If you want to minimise legal claims of abuse RE handcuffs, then ASP because they are all rounded and designed for comfort and ease of quick adjustment and re-double locking. S&W are the easiest for people to pick and escape out of because it's the basic cuff every tutorial out there shows with. But S&W have more rigidity to them and are less prone to bending, though the new ASP Forged Aluninum models are much better than their older polymer models. Chain offers more comfort for the wearer and hinged offers more control over the subject and further restricts their movement. Chain is better for larger people.
Are you saying you need to run through this whole process every time you use a set of handcuffs, or only when you think they've been contaminated / periodic maintenance?

id add could you do a future video on handcuff keys? Im sure there are new cops & armed professionals who could benefit from it. Id advise not buying the streamlight key cuff/LED model. It wears out fast & can break with ease. My instructor, a retired K9 law enforcement officer said he only used regular factory keys. I have a carbon fiber key I used for approx 12 years.
+DL Lambert That's a good idea. I tend to gravitate towards the larger paddle style keys and away from gimiky crap myself.
I was drawn to the streamlight brand more than the design. I would say using gloves, low light/night, rain or snow, and non compliant subjects can be factors. Some corrections officers & sworn le carry spare or hidden keys too.

Here, this will get you started:
1) Start studying for the drug test now. Some day you will have to explain that petty drug arrest, regardless of how drug laws change in the future, departments will always need people who can follow the rules.
2) When driving your car pretend that there is an infant in the back seat. If you wouldn't do it with an infant in the back seat, don't do it. That'll keep you out of 99.9% of trouble most people get into.
3) Make lots of friends, rich friends, poor friends, male friends, female friends, old friends, young friends, straight friends, gay friends, black friends, white friends, Hispanic friends. If there is a culture in your country you want to understand it. Don't be like me and wait till college or work forces you to interact with a diverse crowd of people. As a cop you have to be able to talk with ANYONE and convince them to do things they probably don't want to do. You need to have the gift of gab.
4) Get a decent, age appropriate, job and keep it. Don't overdo it. Work, at your age, should be in addition to school, not as a replacement. But, be a good employee and keep the same job for several years. After high school, and if your school schedule allows it, move towards a job that has some level of responsibility. EMT, delivery driver, Asst. Manager, armored car driver, Clerk, whatever, just something to point to that shows you have an employer who can trust you to not self-destruct without direct supervision.
5) In the summer, do volunteer work. Nobody makes better references than the leaders of nonprofits whom you have done countless favors for. Again, don't over extend yourself.
6) Have a backup plan. LE might turn out to not be for you. This job brings with it stress that few outsiders can fathom. Having the ability to pull the plug an go do something else at least cuts the financial stress to some degree.
7) Being no good at this job doesn’t make you a bad person, just a bad cop. If you get a job as a cop some day and you aren't having the time of your life, quit. Nobody who is worth it will hold it against you. (See #6)
8) If you are going to go to college, and no it isn't 100% necessary, get a degree in something other than a law enforcement related field. Go for accounting, Spanish, teaching, public management, human resources management, whatever. Just make sure there is a job attached to it. Of everything I learned in college the least useful on the job has been the criminal justice classes. So, I guess when you break it all down don't get in trouble and come to the job interview with a rich understanding of how the world works from a bunch of DIFFERENT perspectives.

What would be the best way to clean a leather belt? I have a synthetic leather belt so I can just wipe mine down with bleach water, but what about people that use a leather belt.
Unfortunately, just like with leather search gloves, leather belts will absorb liquid nasties.
About the only solution is to use hand sanitizer or bleach/water. Both are less than 100% effective and both will damage the leather. That is part of the reason synthetics are so popular for duty gear.

IF YOU HAVE ASP RESTRAINTS, YOU CAN CHANGE THE LOCKING MECHANISM, WITHOUT VOIDING THE WARRANTY.
ASP HAS 3 DIFFERENT SECURITY LEVELS, AND EACH LEVEL IS COLOR CODED.

I PERSONALLY CHOSE THE HINGED HANDCUFFS, WHICH I PAID FOR ALL 12 PAIRS OF ASP HINGED HANDCUFFS, AS WELL AS ALL 8 HOLSTERS.

I use clorox bleach wipes on patrol and the ole WD-40 one a week or so just make sure your wearing your ppe at the time i say again wear your ppe's once more fore the cheap seats and the fng's WEAR YOUR PPE's i touch the same door handles and steering wheel as you do.
I was told WD40 attracts dust and debris. Is there anything better than WD40 to use to get the water out etc?
+Silent but Descriptive All liquids trap dust. Unless they are magnetically charged they shouldn't"attract" dust to the best of my knowledge. If dust is that big of a concern in your area I would use the end, let em dry really well then use a dry lube. Be careful as many dry lubes are a PITA to clean up or get out of clothes.

For lube I just ordered some of this "3-IN-ONE 3-IN-ONE Aerosol with PTFE 250ml" which should be good. Now I just need to get the cleaning/degreasing side of things taken care of. I have had a recommendation of this following product due to it evaporating quickly since I cannot get inside cuffs to wipe anything "Contact Cleaner For Electric & Electronic Equipment WD-40 Specialist Spray 400ml" So that is in my cart but I am not ordering yet until I get a bit more info if it would be good to use or not.

I’m late, but I use Dry Graphite from Lowe’s or Home Depot. It’s made for locking mechanisms without attracting dust

+2AverageJustins A double lock keeps the cuffs from closing. So the bow of cuffs are litteraly locked in place and can't tighten, hurting the person cuffed.

When I did ride along's what I saw officer's did anytime we stopped at the jail they had a spray there and a towel and that's how they cleaned there cuffs
WD-40 is very usefull. I always have one in my car and few of them in my house. Good for everything, not only metal.

one time I use a lighter and a can of WD-40 to blow torch a spider because spiders among certain other creatures deserve to die by fire. I'm not a psycho or anything but it was a very poisonous spider and I was only in swim shorts sooo yeah fire.

stop using expensive Gun oil it's a gimmick! use Mobil 1 synthetic oil for thin lubrication purposes and protection and get you a tub of Mobil 1 synthetic high performance Grease for internal slide rails. one quart and one tub will last you the rest of your life. it comes from the same Refinery and if it's good enough for race cars it's good enough for firearms.

+free field training for less then $20 you can service a whole lot of hardware for a long time. you can get eye droppers and spray bottles for a couple of bucks. besides being much cheaper I think it performs a lot better. if it helps sell you on the idea I got the idea from a retired police armorer. I also told my local indoor range and they use it on all their rentals.....just do it! lol don't you hate it when you have a really good idea and people are too stubborn to try it out?

Real talk though, I haven't bought a pair of eyepro or a can of gun lube in years. I am blessed with the gift of gab and that gets me LOTS of samples anytime I talk to a sales rep. I do like rem oil because of how thin it is, it seems to get into the cuffs better than thicker lubricants. If I don't have that I just use any penetrating or cutting oil I can find around. cuffs aren't exactly a high strain/high heat mechanism. I am currently using m-pro-7 for all my guns... because it was free.
Dishwasher, lube, n 4 poster bed. 😜 trying to make fun cuz I had a shit week. 🙄

thumbs down. Anyone who follows this will run the risk of cuffs being rusted internally. If you wanna clean your cuffs, just Mix water and very littleammonia. dab a rag into the solution and wipe the OUTSIDE of your cuffs and dry immediately. Then wipe your cuffs again with plain water but make sure their bone dry. Once done, Oil your cuffs using the peerless maintenance method (its on youtube).
If you are OK with hep c then that is your business. I suggest sanatizing all the nooks and crannies in cuffs after some idiot you find on skid row shits, pisses, vomits, or bleeds all over them. It that means they last 10 years instead of 50 so be it. Cuffs, like all our gear, are disposable.

Nah, I just use the standard Smith and Wesson model 100 style. I have had two people ever that they didn't make it around the wrists of, bot of them were too fat to effectively move. I'm talking 500lbs. plus. For them I used a couple sets of zip cuffs hooked together.
