As a foreigner ... what scares me the most is the total lack of morality and integrity that GOP in congress shows. I've never seen so despicable behavior from politicians. ... that, and that 1/3 of the US population seem to live in a fact-free bubble where that's just totally OK.

Peter Mogensen you are not alone. 2/3rds of the country is ready to vote most all of them out of office.
Greed is a powerful motive, Money is truly at the root of all of this evil. That, and an absolute absence of a moral compass in the trumpublican Party. This nightmare will be ending soon. Count on it!

... the problem seems to be that the US founding fathers did actually expect an "insane and complete idiot" (or similar corrupt demagogue) to be elected. And they put in guards against that.
But they didn't expect a morally bankrupt and complicit congress.

That total lack of morality and integrity is the result of decades of indoctrinating and cheating their voters - by this point generations of right wingers have been raised on nothing but lies and slander and hate for Democrats and minorities and indoctrinated to support only what is good for billionaires and corporations, never citizens. They're fascists. They no longer want democracy and while they can't imagine government ever HELPING people, they want the government to be on their side by oppressing other races with brutality. Trump is their avatar.

Speaking as a citizen, I think there are a _few_ things the United States has to do before we have _any_ right to be called "the leader of the free world" again.
First, we have to abolish the Electoral College and _finally_ start electing the president on the basis of the _popular_ vote.
Second, we have to fully embrace the Metric System. Seriously, this country played a crucial role in the _development_ thereof, and anyone who knows the Imperial System _and_ the Metric System freely recognizes that the Metric System is better. By sticking to the Imperial System, we are only causing ourselves undue hardship.
Third, we have to prioritize the taxation of the wealthy _over_ raising the national debt.
The fact is, this country has debt. This much is not controversial. The controversy arises when we start talking about how to _handle_ that debt. What do we do? We could _default_ which would completely devastate this country's credit.
We cannot, however, raise taxes on the _poor,_ because they're poor. By definition, they _already_ have next to nothing.
We can't raise taxes on the working class, because they're just one step away from being poor _themselves._ All the money from every working-class budget, combined, would not be enough to make a dent in this country's debt.
We can't raise taxes on the _middle_ class, because they're only _two_ steps away from being poor. Even every single penny from the middle class, the working class and the poor, combined, would not be enough to make a dent.
We could raise taxes on the _wealthy,_ but the political elite in this country won't _let_ us. They sell us this same old rhetoric about how higher taxes on the wealthy destroy jobs, despite a complete lack of historical evidentiary support and _abundant_ evidentiary support to the _contrary._
We're talking about individuals _so_ wealthy that they can afford multiple mansions and a household staff to maintain each, chauffeur-drawn limos, (in most cases) _yachts,_ (in a _few_ cases) private jets, and somehow, we are receptive to the notion that the reason they're not hiring is they can't afford to because their _taxes_ are too friggin' high.
If you are wealthy, but refuse to shoulder your share of your country's expenses, you have no business presenting yourself as a patriot; especially when you profit from the completely unnecessary expansion of the military.
Fourth, we are going to have to start teaching a second language in elementary school. Throughout the _rest_ of the First World, and most of the _Third_ World, multilingualism is the norm. Now I dare to believe that someone born in the US is not, by this act, _any_ less able to learn than someone born in any other country. If _they_ are up to this, then why aren't _we?_ And how much smaller would the world be if every single person in it spoke at least two languages.
Fifth, we are going to have to grant this country's public colleges and universities the exact same financial priority that we grant all of our public high schools, middle schools and elementary schools. The idea of spending your tax dollars to teach kids the most basic reading, writing and math in _elementary_ school is not something the average taxpayer objects to. The average taxpayer, likewise, has no business objecting to the use of their tax dollars to help fellow Americans get more in demand skills and go on to better paying jobs, bring in more money, buy nicer things, and fuel economic growth without having to worry about creditors; especially when the average taxpayer has no objections to their tax dollars being used for the _most well-funded military in the history of the world_ (no exaggeration).
Sixth, we are going to have to abandon this notion that healthcare is a luxury. Everywhere else in the _entire first world_ with the possible exception of Turkey, healthcare is a _right._ Now when the only two countries in the _first_ world that don't provide healthcare as a right are the United States and _Turkey,_ something is very wrong. This is not the kind of company we have any business keeping.
But of course, I'm dreaming. The United States is not this reasonable, and is actually making quite rapid progress _away_ from this kind of thing. 🤷

They said his heroics in the War in Vietnam were vastly overstated or even false. A clear attempt to divert the attention from W's Vietnam War experience: W was in the Air National Guard and never left the base, just goofed around with his buddies who were also privileged and had someone on the "inside" to make sure none of them saw combat. The GOP hammered Mr. Kerry claiming he couldn't stick to a decision, that he was a "flip-flopper", both outrageous lies! But, what else should we expect from the Republicans. 😒

He's right, the aides that stole bills from the president's desk should be charged with treason. The generals that refuse his orders should be sent to military tribunals to decide if their position granted them the right and if it was the wrong decision, if found guilty; they would be discharged.

I WOULD BET THAT THE "SOUTHERN SENATOR" that John Kerry alludes-to in his story at the 4:46 time-counter mark, is the 1980s-era Alabama Senator named Howell Heflin. Mr. Kerry was almost doing an "impression" of (the late) Mr. Heflin during that anecdote.

It'd be kind of cool if The Late Show had a periodic magazine, filled with a few exclusives and a recap of the season. 6:30 I love this music piece...and oh what a good interview. John Kerry is a real patriot, came back from Vietnam & try to correct a wrong war. He would have been a great President if far right wouldn't have Swift Boated him (their hatred for anything Democrats has paved the way for a totally unfit president squatting in White House today). Thanks for ur great service to this nation.

The will of the people needs to be heard. We need to work to end Gerrymandering, the electoral college, and hidden campaign financing. Rooting out corruption is like weeding a vacant yard with a fork, but if we don't all pay attention and work on it, this is what we get.
