I've been self employed for going on 4 years now. In my area Handyman is exactly what you want on your cards, truck etc. The guy that made my signs for my truck put construction instead of handyman and I noticed a drop in my calls. A person should think about what certain words implies. Construction implies equipment, subs, some employees, etc. But most importantly it implies you are expensive. After all it is a construction company so you have to have a lot of overhead is what most people think. Handyman implies you a small business owner without alot of overhead. Less expensive than that construction company anyway. Imo
Thank you for your comment. I agree it I have just started my handyman business in California. Can you give me any advice on how to get more customers?
@@ericmcdaniel4029 I went to work installing closets for a company. I’m learning a lot and I run my handyman business on the side. It works for me I love the job but the goal is to have the business full time. My goal when I start full time for myself is $1000 a week.

Set your pricing ( market research, figure out your business expenses) 5. Develop a marketing strategy ( advertising yourself, Online & offline ) THANK ME LATER 😎

The Money Filters Rule# 1 Never, Never call yourself or your business, “Handyman” Your pay just went down 50% after calling yourself a Handyman. As someone who has dabbles in the trade since I was thirteen, I started helping my dad, then a friend of my dads was my first boss, quit school at 17, I'm 34 now, I has a steady job doing industrial electrical, and work weekends doing my side business. Finding a price to charges sometimes is morally oriented decision. For example I'm not going to charge an old woman just to change her light bulbs, I'm just going to help them out. I made a lot of friends just helping people out which also got me more jobs.

Thank you so much for mentioning the “Handyman Laws” I had no idea! I live in Florida and a handyman license is not needed to do most small to mid size jobs but it’s only $200-$300 to be able to do more mid size jobs. Quotes from my research: “You do not need a Florida handyman license. An unlicensed handyman can do the following: install cabinets, flooring, and above ground swimming pools; paint the interior and exterior of a home; perform basic yard work, and repair drywall.”
I was just watching this video. I paused it to go look up something online, and then unknowingly found your resources and started reading an article about Steve Handyman in California, and some of the things that he does to maximize his business to avoid excessive estimate calls. I then found out I was looking at your website so here I am back and I just wanted to share I think you’ve got great coverage. I am really interested in what you are talking about and I look forward to learning about your experience as a handyman. Particularly liked the emphasis on working out your rate. My advice; be realistic about your available hours, don't include weekends (you will probably end up working some but they shouldn't form part of your base hours) and don't forget to include holiday time. I get really miffed when I hear people say 'oh I'm self employed, I don't get paid holiday'. My reply 'best have a word with your boss then', of course you do but you must factor them in. Oh and just in case you're in any doubt I'm self employed and have been for the past nine years.

There are too many states that you will starve trying to get $50.00-$100.00 an hour for. I'm sure there are places that will support that but in my state for example a high paying wage at say a plant or oil field business you can expect $18.00-$35.00 an hour with benifits. Most handymen here charge $20.00 an hour. I've been doing this for 15 years and I average between $30.00 to $100.00 an hour depending on the season, service, and time constraints. I've never advertised as my customers are extremly happy with my work and I've got repeat customers for years because of trust, quality of work, and they always refer me to friends and family. As a sole operator I am never slowed down by weather, seasons, or slow periods because I schedule my work around those obstacles. But it does take years of hard work to build up a clientele and one bad judgement call or being dishonest in ANY way can and will ruin your efforts. I'm proud that 15 years I've never been sued or had a single complaint. Trust me that is the real work.
I agree that you must be in the city if you want to charge so much. He's probably in Las Vegas if he's in Nevada. I live here and you can charge a lot. I used to charge people in nice neighborhoods higher when I first started doing jobs on my own, and I made a lot of money doing that while still taking jobs at 20 an hour or so, but now I realize that that's not very honest and I have a price sheet that has most every kind of job I do on there (some jobs I flat rate and some I charge hourly) so everyone gets charged the same.
Oh yeah and speaking of being sued, that's one thing no one ever talks about so I'm glad you mentioned it. You better believe that if a customer thinks you owe them money or otherwise didn't hold up your end of the bargain, they will sue you. If you accept a large job you may need to have the customer sign a contract; I explain to people that it is for the benefit of ALL parties involved. It is those aforementioned wealthy customers that will sue you before anyone else. As your business grows it's good to know or at least know of a good attorney, before you're even involved in any kind of legal dispute.

Great video, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. My issue is that I love doing so many different handyman jobs that I can’t seem to pick one. Right now I’m getting experience in many areas at a discounted rate (but it’s the most I’ve ever made consistently/ steadily) so I feel it’s a win win for now. I’m also feeling these different jobs will help me find my niche..
The licensed jobs are ok to do but I make them sign a waiver. The waiver states they acknowledge you are doing the job as a favor to a friend and you are not responsible for any damages that occur. Any money exchanged is for parts needed for the job. I have done it a hundred times with no issues.
We are constantly seeing water heater installed by handymen where the venting was done incorrectly. Even if it’s 10 years after the install, the handyman installer may be targeted if the homeowners were made I’ll due to a faulty install.

This video got me thinking about a quote of Ford’s. When he was on trial for something a lawyer asked him if he knew anything about cars or something like that and he said, “No, I don’t. However, with the press of a button I can have someone in my company who knows what he’s talking about in anything.” Or something like that
What do you think will be the best and quicker marketing plan for getting customer to hire you. Business cards, flyers, car magnet, ? what do you recommend will be the quicker and most cost effective ?
Quick marketing methods are rarely the most cost effective. If you want quality customers fast then pay for some ads or for leads directly. If you want cost effective than invest your time now into local SEO efforts which will yield an extremely high ROI over the long term.
Business cards are a must but are handed directly to "potential" clients, you aren't going to be walking around town handing out cards so that's more for like potential clients. I have found magnets help out simply because everyone reads them, 3 cars on your daily commute may be looking for a handyman and as soon as they see your sign they snap a picture for later or call you on the spot. It depends as well on the area. Thumbtack may be a good source for leads.
Lol. If I were only eighteen again, decided to start my business then instead of going into the Army AND had heard your words I would be freakin' retired by now.

In South Carolina we can't go over $200.00 materials and labor combined. If the cost is greater than the $200.00 we must have a specialty license or a general contractor's license. It's hard to make a living as a handyman in our area.
What would you say about individual auto mechanic freelancers? Does starting up an individual practice in this field have great potential for high profits?
Handyman works in Arizona requires no permitting or licensing for jobs under $1000... I'm looking to get into providing electrical services... I see a lot of money to be made installing EV chargers in people garages. I'm in the process of testing to get my electricians license right now... feeling excited to be in charge of the work and only have the customer to answer to.
Hi, I’m Dennis Dela Rosa Handyman from Toronto Ontario. I just started my handyman business 4 months ago. Regarding step 5 - Create A Marketing Strategy: now I am working with “handy for pros” so that I can meet new people to be my customers in my handyman business. Any advice if this is a good marketing strategy for handyman business?
There are thousands of ways to get customers. The only question is this going to be a sustainable way to keep your schedule filled in the long term. Do you want to keep doing this for the next several years? If not, then I’d say use it in the short term and focus on better options.
i love your story , i am in the urge of starting my Handyman business , is there any step by step instruction , you could help me with moreover (what is the estimated startup cost ?).

If you put in the work to build your business and execute on the basics, you can find work anywhere. But I’m not certain on how supply measures with demand at this point.
It is still slightly unclear, I would like to run a small business of small repairs, like hanging pictures, maybe a ceiling fan or a door repair tv hanging. DO I need to have a business license for that? it just a side hustle that I would like to do on the weekends. I dont think anything for the price is 1,000 would be in my menu of job... this all in Nevada.
State License. Town License. Per township individually. Sometimes County License. Insurance and Liability. A work vehicle that should be sepetate from a personal vehicle. Depending on state you can not step unto homeowner stairs without insurance. This guy is telling you the easiest part of starting a buisness, the B.S part.

I calculate materials plus 10% times that by 3 and that's usually what I charge unless its mostly labor then I charge an hourly based on danger since I'm a chimney sweep. The higher I go up, greater the cost.

No, you can start as a sole proprietor. Although an LLC is usually a better option because of the layer of protection it can provide to your personal assets.

What about insurance? Or do you need insurance only if you're a contractor?
Thank you for your advice very helpful.
No need to specialize right away. It will happen naturally over time.
That is very cool details. I enjoyed it. Ilm willing to do Handyman too. and This video will be vay useful.
Glad you found it helpful!
All you need is these 2 books-

YOUR WELCOME!
Richard Wolfe : An apostrophe is the difference between knowing your shit, and knowing you're shit.
I appreciate the book recommendations though! No hard feelings. I just had to use that awesome slam! YOU'RE WELCOME!
Thanks.. btw did RUclips send you the video discouraging say "you're welcome " probably not I seem to be targeted for nonsense.
This video got me thinking about a quote of Ford’s. When he was on trial for something a lawyer asked him if he knew anything about cars or something like that and he said,
“No, I don’t.
Thumbtack may be a good source for leads.
step one: have a mom with alot of friends who are attracted to my neotenous features.
Lol. If I were only eighteen again, decided to start my business then instead of going into the Army AND had heard your words I would be freakin' retired by now.

I had to go look up the word neotenous lmao , after hearing the definition i find your comment funny good sir
Appreciate Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you tried - Rozardner Successful Handyman Reality (just google it)? It is a good one of a kind guide for how to start a handyman business minus the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my friend Sam at last got great success with it.
Do you implement estimating software?
Handyman: jack of all trades, master of none.
Oftentimes they are masters of one or a few trades as well, and there's a lot of knowledge that overlaps between different trades.
This vid is an awesome awesome awesome starting point, thank you!
My #1 costumers are widows
Best video I've seen today on the topic.
Awesome video! Any suggestions on invoice and customer tracking? Thanks
Thanks mate really helpful information
Excellent video
Thank you for sharing this video.
My pleasure
Great video thank you.
This info is good!
Awesome vid dude thanks
Helpful. Thanks:)
So helpful and inspiring.
Hey do i have to have 5 consecutive years in handyman related work to get my license ?

Hello I want to start a carrier as a handyman. I want to get some experience before I apply for jobs because everybody wants experienced workers. How can I do this? Should I go to school? If yes, do you know any school in Miami, if not anywhere in the US? Thx

I’m not a handy man and I always have older women asking me to come over lol not kidding.
4 years later, I'd suggest looking into the current prices of general liability coverage. I'm not sure if I can stay in business! 😥😥
Thank you
THANK YOU !! : )
Thank you handy Manny
How is the market in Las Vegas? Is there a lot of work?
If you put in the work to build your business and execute on the basics, you can find work anywhere. But I’m not certain on how supply measures with demand at this point.
Excellent video 👌👌
It is still slightly unclear, I would like to run a small business of small repairs, like hanging pictures, maybe a ceiling fan or a door repair tv hanging. DO I need to have a business license for that? it just a side hustle that I would like to do on the weekends. I dont think anything for the price is 1,000 would be in my menu of job... this all in Nevada.
Thanks for the post much appreciated.
Last step. specialize yourself in certain things so you can make perfect
Check us out for a business idea!
Thanks that's what I do to keep the money flowing! Great information and great delivery. Cheers!
State License. Town License. Per township individually. Sometimes County License. Insurance and Liability. A work vehicle that should be sepetate from a personal vehicle. Depending on state you can not step unto homeowner stairs without insurance. This guy is telling you the easiest part of starting a buisness, the B.S part.
Thx man!
To scale up , Finding essential, reliable quality tradesman for my property maintenance company or any company like mine is very hard.
Yes, that is the biggest challenge of scaling. Finding work is easier than finding reliable talent.
Thank for your vídeo
What's so bad about dry wall that so many hate it!!! Doing dry wall has made me a lot of money!!!
People don't have eye for detail it takes to make a repair look good and unnoticeable. Also messy and not great for your lungs but that's why you wear a respirator
Nice video body!! I am about to start a handyman myself, I’m on quitting my job, And trying to learn something here on RUclips how to start! Is there any business license for handyman? live in novato
It varies by state but most states do not have a specific handyman license.
#3. So true.
what naics code should i use?
I calculate materials plus 10% times that by 3 and that's usually what I charge unless its mostly labor then I charge an hourly based on danger since I'm a chimney sweep. The higher I go up, greater the cost.
My Girlfriends Mum tried to hire a Handyman in London England and they Handyman Is booked up until April next year. A light bulb went off at that moment!
Yes there is a shortage of skilled labor for sure and I don’t see that being resolved anytime soon.
Is forming an LLC mandatory (laws not withstanding)?
No, you can start as a sole proprietor. Although an LLC is usually a better option because of the layer of protection it can provide to your personal assets.
Do you still operate a handyman business?
No, that's why he's doing YT tutorials.
For some reason I read the title as, "how to start a profitable hitman business."
