I just discovered you, thank you for all the helpful information about oil pastels. I have a couple sets collecting dust, you have inspired me to pull them out.
This makes me so happy! Thanks for your kind words Donna. This was one of my first videos :) I made an updated paper review if you're curious to watch it ► ruclips.net/video/85yzizYfxSo/видео.html Hope to speak to you again! Have a great week :)
It's always better to prime your surface if you want to protect your work. I use Gesso (on thick paper). Having said that, I've had oil pastel drawings made on regular sketchbook paper without priming it and even after many years the paper is not damaged at all. One important thing is that oil pastels never dry, they only harden. So once your work is completed you should fix it and/or frame it under grass. Hope it helps :) www.sennelier-colors.com/en/Oil-pastel-fixative_fiche_4366.html

Hello! like your reviews . Just a thought, couldn't you take the canvas you painted with acrylic and put a coat of clear gesso over to give you some tooth for the oil pastel? just a thought or even mix the acrylic colored background color with the clear gesso giving you the tooth you need. I don't use oil pastels but was thinking of how to use them. Love the information you share.
Thank you for this video. Just what I was looking for. I've just bought some oil pastels and have tried them out only on paper. I've been painting with acrylic for many years and wanted a change. Will try on MDF boards and canvas boards lying around the house. Btw, how do you keep your oil pastel paintings done on paper? And what's the best way to fix an oil pastel picture?
When it's too rough it's more difficult to cover the paper (hard to make the pigment get into the grooves ex: Canson Mi-teinte). If it's too smooth the pigment will slip and layering many colors will be hard (example Bristol smooth is not very good). The best paper is a thick paper that is porous to the tough without being ''rough'' If you get a mixed media sketchbook with paper 100 lb or more you'll be good. ex: this one ► goo.gl/2iaicf My personnal favorite paper is Somerset but it's expensive.
Never tried it. You can use most anything though. The only concern is if the paper is really thin, it might be difficult to blend without damaging the paper.

You know what, I've never used clear Gesso! I've only used white. It's a great idea, I should try it :) Thanks for the tip!

Btw, how do you keep your oil pastel paintings done on paper?
And what's the best way to fix an oil pastel picture?
Oil Pastel fixative by Sennelier is good. I keep mine is a portfolio with a little wax paper on top to prevent transfer.
Thanks ❤
How about the vellum board?, iis it good for oil pastel?
This is very helpful! Thank you. One question, have you used watercolor paper with oil pastels?
Never tried it but I'm sure it would work as watercolor paper is pretty thick and has a little tooth. 👍
Very good instruction, thank you
Thank you. Very helpful
Glad it helped! Have a great week :)
Is bond paper good enough for my output?
great information! Thank you
I'm glad it helped! Have a great weekend :)
I have an question ..
Can I use A4 sheet paper' ? For doing oil pastel work on it?
Will the colours blend nicely if I use A4 sheet ?
thicker paper is ideal but any paper will do.
which paper is the best for oil pastel painting... plzz suggest me
Any Mixed Media sketchbook is great as a beginner.
@@SyndiaArt thank you
where will I get this type of art paper ?
Very helpful video! But I didn't understand a thing: with oil pastels do you suggest smooth or rough paper?

Mixed Media paper is preferable :o)
Can I use 300gsm and 350gsm paper as well?
yes both are fine :o)
can i use woodfree paper as well?
Never tried it. You can use most anything though. The only concern is if the paper is really thin, it might be difficult to blend without damaging the paper.
Can I use 90lb paper?
Yes, absolutely.
