    I loved how you brought up how Godrick's grafting was born of an inferiority complex, that's the same way I saw it too. Another environmental detail that I noticed on a subsequent playthrough was the capital Lyndell, and how the doors and windows on all the buildings are glued shut, with what looks like tree sap (fitting) as a way of conveying Morgott's cope, that everything is okay, and that one day things will return to the way they were, shutting people inside there homes and having soldiers roam the streets until that day comes. Many characters in Elden Ring are coping, or are compensating for the loss of the world that once was, and seek a return to it, Morgott, Maliketh, Mohg and they all attempt to achieve this in there own unique way.

      I think the sealing around the doors and windows was corpse wax, if you look close at the material and what's on the gargoyle's weapons. To keep the ashes of the last erdtree burning out, but that's an interesting idea I hadn't thought of regarding why it would be there.

    I've seen people say "instead of games telling actually stories, they can now have an item description that just says 'Brother...' and people will praise it." which I think is very silly because the way fromsoft games tell their stories are entirely to serve the way the games are. Yakuza, for example wouldn't benefit from their type of storytelling, but games like this does and to say it's bad because it's not like traditional games doesn't make sense to me.

    • @easschung9442
      @easschung9442 2 года назад +20

      Item descriptions are a medium through which video games can inform, so that criticism is stupid. Because it's not like the games don't use other ways to tell their story too, like visuals, dialogue, etc

    • @justmyopinion79
      @justmyopinion79 2 года назад +9

      Like Alec said, series like Pokemon and Zelda do it too in ways he described in those videos. But people are just too lazy to use the medium

      I saw people say this about Bloodborne when it came out, and that it doesn't qualify as "real" storytelling or that it's lazy. I love games that are very cutscene heavy too, but not every game has to get their story across that way.

    • @anenemystand5582
      @anenemystand5582 2 года назад +3

      Besides. The story isn't in item descriptions. Item descriptions simply add more context to the world and characters to flesh them out. Its essentially flavor text, something that has been in games since forever. Fromsoft just does it really well

    @spiralistichope9216 2 года назад

    Hey man, it's been a LONG time! I have a huge backlog of your videos (especially the AoT ones), and the bulk of the reason is probably because of Elden Ring, and how deeply immersed I've been in the game over the last couple of months (seriously, just two extremely thorough playthroughs and a bunch of coop/pvp has netted me a crazy 400+ hours already)! With that in mind, it's so awesome to see you make a video detailing the storytelling brilliance of the game, since I also love these Soulsborne games for their unique narrative experience, just as you elucidate upon!
    I'm so glad to see you hit the nail on the head about what makes these games so special, why they stand out in the non-traditional storytelling sense, demanding investment to truly appreciate as narratives in a nuanced way that genuinely fits together like some kind of archeological lore puzzle. So many people just blow them off as lacking a coherent story because of their purposeful ambiguity and open-ended interpretive and community-driven nature, and it really is a shame, because it is all there if you allow yourself to be engrossed by From's storytelling, and there is so much depth and longevity to it all because of the novel style it perpetuates. Of course, it's fine for a storytelling style not to be for everyone, but it's also unfair to disparage the story as not being there just because of how uniquely different it is to the norm. I think the collaboration of Martin with Miyazaki really paid off in particular with Elden Ring as you discuss, and it really is up there with Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne as among my favorite games of all time now (and MGS2 and the Witcher 3, among a few others). Barring some flaws with boss design philosophy, it's hard to say ER isn't already up there with their best work yet, and if they pull a DLC with anywhere near the quality of The Old Hunters (still my favorite content From has ever produced), ER truly make surpass them all. We have to wait and see about that, though...
    I look forward to catching up to your other anime videos over the last few weeks and months, but well done with this brilliant video! If you would like to check out a couple of essays of mine on the Elden Ring subreddit relating to the game's lore and story, I'd love to share them with you and get an opinion from a creator like you who I respect a great deal! I have a huge essay on the core plotline of Elden Ring and Marika's grand design in relation to our journey as a Tarnished, and a slightly shorter one on the mystery of Farum Azula and its compelling history. Please let me know if you're interested so I can send you the links, and thanks again for your awesome content!

    Being a souls vet and a berserk enjoyer, it was nice getting messages from newcomers when I destroyed their bosses with the great sword. It felt good being able to play in a game and show off my experience in exciting and moving fights. The developers did a good job on not only doing their vision, but honoring Miura’s work. It’s not often a game can teach valuable lessons about enduring and overcoming, let alone make it into the mainstream. To everyone, keep struggling.

If all of these 3 are fleshed out a little bit more, I'd put it up there with Hollow Knight, BB, and DS 1

    Enjoyed the video, but I’d consider this lore more so than a story. Take lots of the rings for example: the world had a huge battle against sauron a couple thousand years ago, and every character has a rich history, but the actual story is Frodo trying to get the ring to Mordor. It uses lore to supplement and bolster the story. In the case of elden ring, it uses the lore and history to supplement the gameplay. Elden ring doesn’t have a bad story, it just doesn’t have a story at all IMO. Please don’t be upset

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  2 года назад +2

      I wouldn’t. I consider lore to very much be a part of a story, I don’t agree with anyone who separates the two. And don’t worry - I’m not upset, I don’t know why you assume I would be.

      @@Aleczandxr I think you may be right on lore being a part of the story, I guess my issue lies in the fact that it’s only a part. It’s not a replacement for the 7 elements of storytelling. It’s supplementary. I think the plot, the dialogue,theme and characters . The decor and melody are nothing short of phenomenal, and I think that’s why many people like it so much, but I genuinely feel it’s not a very well rounded story. @Fear_the_Nog 2 года назад +3

      @@brianmcdermott8693But all 7 elements of storytelling are actually in fact present in Elden Ring, and more than the 7. There is a plot (multiple plots), there is an overarching branching main story, there is a setting, a theme, a central conflict, a beginning, a middle, a climax, and endings.
      You are not inhabiting another character like Solid Snake, Aloy or Cloud, who have specific stuff happen to their lives and you're just watching in 3rd person. You are a direct participant in the story as yourself.
      Gostoc locking you in a room with big baddie knight and stealing your hard earned runes because he is a lowlife, setting you back in your quest to reach Godrick so you can defeat him to get an audience with the Two Fingers, making you curse the bloke and even try to kill him, IS story. After you defeat Godrick, when you learned you must risk more to get the benediction for the great rune to receive its power, you travel to heights you never before seen, defeating giants along the way and barely escaping with your life to arrive at a divine tower at the top of the world, feeling the immensity of the powers of old that is now within your grasp. That is the next chapter in the story. And that's just the beginning of a long long path of discovering how much of a pawn you are, taunted and used by powers both cosmic and mundane, or mad or petty, and liking some characters so much, that it genuinely hurts to see them die for you, or sacrifice themselves for a fanatical cause, and how you define your character in this strange world. You ARE Frodo on his quest to Mordor. You are Tarnished on your own quest to the Erdtree, swept up in a game of thrones like conflict between gods and even between insane zealots from different religious sects, and unlike Frodo, is becoming Elden Lord even a good thing? as clean cut as throwing the One Ring into Mount Doom as Frodo was tasked to do? Or is something far more sinister and frightening going on and how should you react when you discover that all is not as they seem? Elden Ring is the Escape Room of game storytelling, like Myst, like Shadow of the Colossus, it's not just lore. To me, what you seem to be defining as "storytelling" is "objectively narrated presentation". I love those too, a lot, (FF7 my favorite game) but this also has story, in spades.

    I will say as far as story and gameplay, elden ring is definitely not in my Top 3 FromSoft games, but one thing I think it excels at better than any previous title is the CHARACTER writing, for the first time in a soulsbourne game I actually feel like the characters have relatable issues and tangible desires, they actually want HUMAN things, like recognition, food, wealth and even sex. Before characters were obsessed with abstract concepts like blood/souls, vague covenant rituals, destiny and the cosmos

      not in your top 3 in terms of story OR gameplay? LOL how does that work? Elden ring is in my opinion not only perfection of souls combat that takes Sekiro levels of aggression and gives the variety of souls trilogy. And has one of THE most profound and deepest lores I've ever seen in an action game and gaming in general. None of the previous games come close for me. I think you simply have a surface level understanding of the lore and the gameplay. I dont say this to demean you. Literally 90% of people who played didntt get the richest and most advanced aspects of gameplay (Challenge runners like Lupine got it. You can watch his criticism of Joseph Anderson response to understand) and also lorewise 99% of people dont have a clue about some of the deeper sub-text and motivations of MANY characters and how they relate to each other LETALONE the basic plot points like why ER was shattered or for what purpose etc. ER is so complex and rich in BOTh gameplay and lore that MANY would be dumbfounded by it if explored deeply.
