    Just a quick thing to note - as some have pointed out, the official Zelda lore is quite spotty and inconsistent at times, and so some don’t like to think of official sources such as Hyrule Historia or the Zelda Encyclopedia that I referred to in this video as genuine canon. That’s totally fair and valid given the inconsistencies, and if you don’t buy into those explanations then feel free to take the couple of instances in the video where I do refer to those sources with a huge grain of salt, or to even ignore them entirely. In the grand scheme of things they’re minor points that don’t really change the overall message I was trying to get across with this video anyway. Cheers!

      I always felt that Nintendo had to re-write the really dark themes in their Big name games because of the stigma it could cause for them as a company so they just make a convenient explanation despite inconsistencies.

    The saddest part of Majora's Mask I think, is that most of the characters have a happy ending of some sort. Even the villain, Skull Kid. All this happiness is brought by Link's efforts to save them. But, this endless time-looping the same three days is only a means to an end. He's only here because it's an obstacle in his way of finding Navi. And at the end, the only one who isn't reunited with their loved one is Link himself. In short, Link ISN'T rewarded for his efforts, yet all of the burden is placed on him. The entire game is a roadblock.

    Majoras mask is a game that has such a perfect tone and atmosphere. This game doesn’t shove its tone down your throat, instead, it allows you to slowly experience the tone of the impending doom hanging above Termina. A perfect example of this is the genius composition of clock town. Day 1 we have a very lively, exiting and happy day where people are doing their jobs and the excitement for the carnival is up in the air, but, people do start to noticed that a giant rock is looming above them appears to have approached closer. Then on the second day, it’s raining and all the excitement and liveliness has toned down. The music tells you that “yes just like yesterday people are preparing for the carnival” but you can also tell by the very unsettling background notes of the song that something isn’t right. More people have started to notice that the moon has auspiciously approached closer and this is when many of the citizens of Termina start going into denial about the fate of Termina, rumours start to take shape, instead of the excitement that was previously up in the air, there is an undertone of fear mixed in there as well. The music gives a sense of urgency like everyone is at unease. This is visually represented through the rainfall in Termina, signifying that it’s not all happy and cheerful anymore and instead There is a constant worry in the people. Finally, on the third and last day, people can hear ground shaking, the moon is so close that it’s almost inevitable that the moon will fall and this is when most people have already fled. If you talk to one of the carnival bridge builders at noon of the last day, he will tell you that all the other carnival builders fled before they even finished the bridge because even they reached a point where denial was no longer going to satisfy them. Nothing encapsulated this feeling better than clock town on the third day. The tempo has become faster than ever before and there is an unsettling background tune that tells you “time is almost up”. Despite all of this, this game never drowns you in that darkness (it is a Zelda game after all). This is because of Link. Link is supposed to thematically represent the hope in everyone’s lives that yes, you can move past these problems. There is a future past this impeding doom and there is always hope in this game and that is what made me want to help these people even more. Love is an important message of this game. Instead of you getting characters to help you, you help them instead. It being uniting 2 lovers with each other or you spreading the love yourself, it’s what keeps people moving. Many people move past their denial of their inevitable fate by appreciating the love and care given to them or them giving to others. This is just one example of how Majoras mask prefects its tone. I can go on and on about why Majoras mask is among my favourite pieces of media but all I want to say is that this game is a work of art and I encourage everyone to play it even once. The time mechanic is a huge turn off for many but once you get used to it, your in for an experience. (Thanks Aleczandxr for this amazing video)

    In a strange way, I think the COVID-19 pandemic deepens my appreciation for Majora's Mask in some way.
    All of the characters in Majora's Mask react to their imminent death in different yet realistic ways, that I haven't seen replicated in any other form of media.
    Some are in denial, some are accepting of death, some are terrified, some don't believe they'll die, etc.
    Obviously COVID isn't as extreme as a giant moon with a creepy face crashing into a country...but regardless, it's how the game depicts the concept of death that makes this game special to me.
    It's a beautiful yet dark story, and I think it's one of the most daring and bold entries in Nintendo's lineup of video games.
    I love this game.

    Majora's Mask is a game that gets better and better the older I get. It's not because the game changes, but it's because I do. My own experiences help shape how I view and interpret things in real life, and in all sorts of media. When I was around 9 or 10, I simply saw Majora's Mask as an extension of OoT. Rather than attempting to view it as its own thing and what it was really trying to do/say, I played it as if it were any other game. The point isn't to inflate Majora's Mask and to turn it into more than it is, but it's definitely a special game because of how well it works on so many different levels.

  • @antimatter3084
    @antimatter3084 3 года назад +15

    I personally think while Majora Mask is pretty horrifying in the way of the growing apocalypse and the reactions to it, I still think Links Awakening is the most horrifying Zelda game conceptual wise since the whole journey basically revolves around wiping an entire civilization and island from existence, and unlike Majora, nobody gets a happy ending.

      I agree that the plot of Link's Awakening is more bleak, especially as the "villains"/bosses are just denizens of the world that don't want to be erased into oblivion once the Wind Fish wakes. Would say that overall though Majora's Mask covers more mature/darker themes than Link's Awakening.
      They're my two favorite Zelda games, and their darker themes are both owed to Yoshiaka Koizumi directing/writing them.

    • @antimatter3084
      @antimatter3084 3 года назад +5

      @@jessepbigjdp I don't know though, I feel though as Link Awakening was darker since it feels like you are never truely the hero in it after the twist, you are essentially bringing around an entire civilization destruction for an entity you don't really know much about while Majora Mask ends with a mostly happy ending. Hell, the manga expands on Link Awakening story with Link having a full on mental breakdown when he discovered the truth behind what he is doing but I think Link Awakening and Majora Mask are some of the best when it comes to crafting a darker story in the Zelda series and I hope BOTW 2 invokes some of those vibes.

  • @XanderVJ

    1:53 I'd like to point out that was actually a retcon. Termina was originally meant to be an actual place. But I guess that Aonuma, as with many things with MM, thought that the reappearance of OOT's models needed a better justification than just "we rushed the game", so he came up with that in-universe explanation.
    Which, I gotta say SUCKS ASS. I know Aonuma doesn't care much for MM, not so much because of its quality, but because developing it was the most physically and emotionally taxing Zelda for him, but I really think he should know better than tampering with the original intent in this self-defeating way.
    And I say that as some to whom MM isn't even in his personal Zelda top 5 (still love it, though).

    • @nopatiencejoe6376
      @nopatiencejoe6376 3 года назад +1

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen Год назад

      It being a "recton" doesn't matter at all as long as it makes sense in-universe for the explanation. That's all that really matters. I always thought it was a trippy abstract world in a weird way that existed but things didn't appear as they seemed. Your comment doesn't make much sense in saying "original intent" here, what "original intent"? Where? There wasn't an official explanation in the game on where Termina came from so it's not like it's not completely messing up something that was established.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen

    I really love the more mature atmosphere, feel, and themes of Majora's Mask. But I still think this game is a casual game. Despite all of the death and horrible things on display in this game, the game overall maintains a classic Zelda feel for most of the time. There are many notable exceptions to this like all of the song of healing cutscenes, the final 6 hours before the moon falls, and a few sidequests. This is my favorite Zelda game because it has the classic Zelda formula with so many interesting additions and a more mature feel. But I do get why many people think it is an all-serious sort of game. In reality, it is a fun game with many serious moments and themes and Nintendo (and Square) is great at making that those games.

    These existantials principles, all this apparent dread, the denial of your inevitable death, the constant suffering of existence and yet the capacity we all have to overcome it, the teaching that there is a possibilty for a bright future past this impeding doom through hope and courage (Link), are such powerful and useful concepts to be put in touch with at a young age while playing that I'm thankful for this masterpiece.
    I think the authenticity that this game has to face the darkness of these human conditions, that seems appaling at first touch, and to treat it not in a lighthearted way but in a realistic and thruthful manner is what makes this game one the finest piece of art of our generation.

    Another great video man. Ocarina and Majora are easily my top two (I consider em one game though because they’re practically identical minus their stories and yet so intertwined) not just because of nostalgia from playing em in the 5th and 7th grade respectively). As cool as a third game (and maybe more if necessary) to wrap up this Link’s tale would be, I wonder if it would subtract from the legacy of Majora’s great ending.
    The devs ruined the Moon’s face in the 3DS version whereas the original had a perfect look of mixed emotions.
    I recommend Lorerunner’s video about this game if anyone hasn’t already seen it; he thinks misunderstandings are rampant among some of the towns people and a big reason for their problems.

    • @felldoh9271
      @felldoh9271 3 года назад

      Plus modern graphics will probably remove the sense you’re playing a direct sequel to Majora’s Mask. Best leave this to the incredible modding community; with enough time and money they could give fans something more mind blowing than what we’ve already gotten and that’s saying a lot considering.

    I think Link is actually dead in this game. That this world is him coping with his own death. We alter see him in twilight as a skeletal warrior after all. So some think he got lost int the forest we see at the start of the game. That the world is so creepy, sad, and beautiful because he is grieving for his own deaths. Reliving his failures and successes and so forth, untill he can finally pass on. This explains why all the people seem to come from Hyrule, and other such things.
    Personally, I wonder if the masks are something he uses to cope. He wears them escape himself, and through sharing the pain of those from the mask, can gradually help him gain acceptance. Him departing is him going on, and accepting his own demise.

    Whoa, great video as always!
    But damn... That retcon for Termina's origin is completely garbage! It's the kinda explanation I'd expect from a kingdom hearts game, not a Zelda one.
    And to explain the rich and mysterious world building of that place by saying "it was all just illusion, lmao" Is borderline disrespectful.
    How the hell Skull kid could have memories to create a world that's more technological advanced than Hyrule?
    Why there's two versions of Romani?
    Who were the people that served as basis for Kafei, Pamela, her father and other orginal NPCs?
    Although I have to concede that Tingle is something that must've come from a fever dream...

    I'd say this was what breath of the wild was missing, a real coherent theme. Breath of the Wild's nonlinearity was nice in terms of minute to minute gameplay and exploration, but I think it screws it over in the memorability department, as its very difficult to write a nonlinear story and create engaging puzzles where you don't know the players tools, and although Majora's Mask's subquests are nonlinear, the 3 day cycle helps keep the size manageable and allow the characters to have linear cycles during it, as well as the main story being quite linear. BotW feels extremely compartmentalized and very weak in most of its story beats as it has no idea which way you'll go, and therefore can't really build on itself and can't change anything major about the world at large, just like an anime filler episode, its hard to do an arc when things can't really progress if it would break the world. It also doesn't help that Ganon was a monster, albeit with an interesting backstory of how he got there, but there was no real antagonist other than Kohga, who was a joke character, so its hard to do stuff like that, as well as the lack of any other recurring characters throughout multiple parts of the journey made the story feel empty, although Age of Calamity helped with that quite a lot, but that's probably due to it being a relatively linear story, as Age of Calamity's story is about purpose, with Zelda feeling quite inadequate with her lack of progress, Rhoam's reconsideration of what protecting Zelda would mean, the various "new champions" meeting their heroes, and Kohga choosing to ally with Zelda for his clan's sake.

    I apologize in advance for being nit picky here, but I'm a bit of a Zelda lore enthusiast and this particular misinterpretation has always bothered me.
    At 1:51 Zelda Encyclopedia isn't canon and in fact contradicts many canon source, and personally I rather dislike this explanation of Termina because it completely undermines the characters in this game and their struggles. It's been stated by the devs that Termina is in fact an alternate world to Hyrule that has always existed.
    Great video though, Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda and you nailed some of the reasons I love the game.

    • @Arcturys
      @Arcturys 3 года назад +1

      @@michaelyu6250 Common misconception that it was written by Nintendo. It was written by Nintendo Dream, a Japanese magazine, with Nintendo's permission. I suppose one could argue that this doesn't make it non-canon however it states within the book that they take some creative liberties.
      As to your last point, you're correct, I am choosing which lore to prefer, I choose to prefer what's stated in the actual game or by a developer as opposed to a book written by a third party.

  • @Graysett
    @Graysett 3 года назад

    Termina's not a real parallel world, official? (Looks it up.) Oh god, it's the Wind Fish all over again. That's incredibly depressing, even for MM. Even the happy ending isn't a happy end...
