Spring/early summer I was somewhat involved in sending supplies to an orphanage and an old folks home in Ukraine when it was still free shipping there.
They needed everything. Clothes, shelf stable food, nails, hammers, water purification tablets and so on.
Personally? Food and water is a given. Other than that? I focus on medications (including birth control), seeds, mylar carpets, sealing tape, food safe containers that things can be grown in, plant lights (to grow things indoors) and fertilizer, candles, batteries, flashlights, and so on. Fishing gear is high on my list of things I am looking for sales for. Yarn. Dye for clothes (stained pale clothes can look as new with a layer of deep colors). Sewing kits. Mending sets for bike tires. Superglue. Suture kits. Anything that can be used to fix things, or make things, not so much the things themselves.
And, my luxury box. Mineral makeup with long, long shelf life. Scarfs to perk up an outfit. Stockings. Coloring pencils for kids. Road chalk. Paper and notebooks. Tiny things that can be used for barter, or are to be given away. I do a tidy in it every November and give it to people that can not afford gifts to their kids, and make sure it gets rotated well.
Keep it organized, keep it snug, and squirrel away 2-5 tings pr week if you can afford it, slowly. And for those of us that can, help others around. Networking is more valuable than most seems to understand in peaceful times.

£500 for a cashmere cardigan might be well out of the reach of most people, but £30 for a cone of wool yarn - enough for a cardigan or jumper - is much more affordable. It takes me about 3 months worth of evenings to make a jumper, and they’re longer lasting than the rubbish in the shops.

Where are you getting decent yarn for 30 pounds per cone? I want to shop there! and how much length is in that cone at what gauge? Non-knitters should know it can take 10-12 skeins of yarn or easily more to knit a sweater depending on your body size and the thickness of the yarn. It's not just 1 skein per garment. Even a pair of socks is 1-2 skeins. If you want custom dyed yarn, that greatly adds to the cost too. There are women still knitting traditional Fishermen's sweaters, and it takes them a solid 90 hours per sweater and they are lightning fast knitters. It's time people learn to knit again! Fortunately there's classes all over youtube!

@@techcowgirl5393 4 ply merino yarn off eBay. 400gram cone. Not sure on the yardage but it’s sufficient to make an adult sized jumper with a simple stocking stitch pattern. At 2 hours knitting a night (watching mindless tv in the evening - I work during the day) it takes around 3 months and I recon I’m an average speed knitter, I’m not Hazel Tindall, that’s for sure :-)

The one thing I thought of while listening, was shoes. As I've gotten older, things like planter fasciitis, and achilles tendonitis have struck along with arthritis. They (chiropodist and physiotherapists) say to ditch runners over 6 months old even if they don't look worn. But I think that in terms of good quality, make sure your feet are well looked after.

i had plantar fasciitis and achilies tendonitis on one foot/leg i tried numerous things but the things that worked for me were a simple £8 pair of insoles with a firm arch support. i bought several pairs so i had them in my slip on sketchers, trainers, boots, wellies and even bought some to wear in my slippers, because at first i only had them in my outdoor footwear but i was cancelling out the effects by not having arch support in my slippers in the evening. so once i put them in slippers too it only took 5 or 6 weeks and i was cured of both problems :) i continue to wear firm arch support insoles now and neither issue has ever came back. they took a good few days of getting used to and hurt a little at first but then i didnt notice them after that. hope that may help you.

We cannot be ostriches! So many warnings before the last WW, many were saying “it will never happen”and “it will be over before Christmas”. According to a few ex-military, current Commander and a General today were giving us warnings. We are too old and infirm to worry about the future but we all can try to be better prepared for any eventuality. We have become too complacent over the past decades being able to buy anything out of season plus having a good supply of whatever fuel we want. We are struggling to get our meds already, food has escalated in price, sugar for example is now twice the price of last year in our local Co-op. Luckily it’s only his lordship who still requires that! We’ve had another letter this year asking if we are still needing to be on their register as vulnerable because of forecast of power outages yet another indication of shortages. If the grid does go down for whatever reason, what will work? Tills, shop doors, street lamps, communication, stairlift, CPAP machine, to name but a few. Just putting a few extra items on our shopping list each week has made a big difference to our preparedness. An extra tin of ham, fish, tomatoes, dried goods, spices, beverages, battery lights/candles , secondary cooking appliance & fuel or whatever item is relevant to you could be invaluable. My grandmother had a pantry, my mum had a pantry, I had a pantry when I was serving in the forces but now I’ve no pantry and nowhere to store anything safely. My husband is an ostrich and my family don’t support me in my views but if/when something happens, where will we be if I don’t prepare, I can no longer drive, (eyes and mobility). Hubby has Parkinson’s no driver there either.

They were definitely giving warnings to those who have ears to hear and are able to read between the lines. I am so grateful to be brought up in the 50's and 60's when my parents and most others of that time still operated in a semi wartime mode, so we saw how to do it. It thus became second nature to us.

For a number of years I've been disturbed by the minimalism trend, and the idea of getting rid of everything that hasn't been used in six months or some other arbitrary time limit: clothes, dishes, books, linens, everything. In the back of my mind, I always thought :"but what if I need it later?" Yes, I do have an excess of things according to some people, but I'm starting to feel better about some of the things sitting around my house right now. Now my question is more what I could use something for if things were no longer available in stores. Even old clothes that don't fit could be piled on top of a bed to help you stay warm in an emergency. I have decent pots to cook on a stove, but also other pots I could use to cook over a fire, if I had to do that. After my husband died, I kept all of his warm winter clothes, and they may eventually wind up pieced into quilts. It's hard to start thinking about things like this, but it's better to do it now, while we have more options left to us.

@jank, your comment is disturbing on a few different levels. You truly sound as if you are trying to justify hoarding. You do not need to sleep under a pile of old clothes that don't fit, you simply need appropriate blankets/quilts/etc. The type of fear you are harboring that would even put such a thought in your mind is not healthy. You don't need clutter and stuff around to be prepared. You need good quality (not necessarily new) home goods, some type of emergency fund, good relations with your neighbors, skills for self-reliance, and a reasonable stock of healthy foodstuffs. Your fear is toxic and is holding you back. I say this as a friend.

Knitting and sewing one's own garments is definitely important. Even now if I get asked to do a sweater on commission, yeah 500+ pounds is going to be the cost because I have to be compensated for my time and the materials. If the garment is custom dyed or has custom cabling or colorwork etc, that'll be extra. In general, the people who don't have the textiles skills to make their own items also don't understand the work that goes into creating bespoke, fitted garments by hand. It took me 3 months to knit my first hooded 3/4 length coat with custom, intricate cabling and colorwork, designed for -50C Canadian winters as a parka under layer that can also be worn on it's own in warmer seasons. This coat will last long after I'm gone and the next generation will be able to use it. That kind of durability takes a good deal of effort!

It definitely feels like we're being told in no uncertain terms that war is coming. I'm in Australia and China is the ever present concern. With other wars we've been so far away from the real fighting that despite sending (and loosing) hundreds of thousands of Australians to fight, we saw very little actual war ourselves. Darwin saw quite a bit of action but nowhere near as much as your average British city.
I've been trying to quietly convince family and friends to get prepared because one of the biggest problems for us is the tyranny of distance. We're so far away from everything, and we import so much, that if push comes to shove a lot of people will really struggle.

I have 11 year old twins so it’s a godsend for me- I have a girl and a boy and the girl is a lot taller (almost as tall as me!) so is too big for childrenswear now so I’ve had a lot of nearly new or barely worn clothes for them including winter coats, tracksuits for their school PE lessons (they wear one twice a week for PE) etc. I also got my son a lovely jumper new with tags for around £6 including postage and it’s lovely and warm. We did a little wander round the charity shops on Wednesday (I work four long days a week so I have Wednesdays off) and honestly there’s not really much worth having in our local ones. Even factoring in the fees and postage for vinted, I still think what I’ve had off vinted is in better condition and better value than what there is in our local charity shops here in Nottinghamshire. Perhaps if I could travel to a more affluent area we’d find more but then the charity shops get pricier!

This is what I emailed you about a few weeks back, I could see the writing on the wall years back tbf...well done Karen! Barring nuclear of course; it is not a bad guideline to think of what was rationed in the war before and build on that. There are good RUclips videos on how the Swedish prepare as citizens and good books about rations cooking and making do. Good quality as you can afford (or second-hand) clothes and (new) shoes that will last, bedding, towels. Dried and tinned fruits, sugar and anything that comes in from abroad (for us in UK most things). Alternative means of cooking or heating food that will cope with grid down. Alternative lighting, torches, battery candles, batteries, battery radio and stocks of foods that can keep you going and psychologically uplifted (very important, so have a few treats stocked). Basic medicines and first aid things. If you can keep warm and dry, well shod and have a cuppa and a biscuit/chocolate in a bit of light and hear the news you will be doing as good as you can. You will learn the rest as you go on. Good luck everyone. Morale is 100% important. Also, unless you are in immediate danger of course, stay put, in place. Bug out is not necessarily a good option unless you are militarily or survival skills trained.

Thank you for your input Karen. Xx

I saw this coming years ago, food shortages were going to happen anyway, the climate will see to that. Make shift and make do was what we had in the last War, You don't throw away clothes you repair them. Sadly our snowflake population will have to learn how to make, repair and go without . Dig the Garden, plant Veg etc and share with others

Yeah, I have noticed the same. I am in my 40s, and most of the people I grew up with, and say 10-20 years older? They are fairly helpless and frankly rather selfish for the most of it. Then you have the 60-70 +++ generation, that has a lot of knowledge, but psychical health is becoming unreliable. Most of the people I have around me, that has taken the time and energy to learn and prepare, learned compassion and networking? Is in their early 20s. I am quite happy to know them, and seeing them build good communities.
