Sam and Paul are an example to us all with their natural egoless humility and devastatingly blistering ability. Awesome playing by Sam and irrepressible enthusiasm from Paul.
Very cool Sam ! you deserve all the accolades you're receiving lately. Paul knows major talent when he hears it. Been watching and listening to you for 3 years or so and it has been a pleasure watching you become a monster player. Thanks for all your kind words on my stuff over the years and good luck in all your musical endeavors to come. Mike
the irony of your statement is Tommy "gun" or Tommy "the duke" as he was actually known would've thumped the living shit out of Stallone with one left hook effortlessly.that's tv for you,Hollywood bullshit is confused as "reality" all the time when in truth most Hollywood superstars are not infallible
One of the coolest videos I've ever seen. I'd previously heard a bit about and from Sam, and a whole lot about and from Paul. ; ] It's great to see Paul in this environment and role. I'd never known that Paul was the organizational force behind The Great Guitar Escape until I very recently heard him talking about it in an interview. Nice.
Paul is such a likable guy and very humble with his own status. He has not bought into his own greatness which is something that they can't teach you as a musician. Great video, can't wait for the solo CD. Keep us updated.
I can't even imagine how cool it would be for a legend like Gilbert to look you and up and give you this level of respect. You have earned good sir. That's really just awesome.
I do the exact same thing with my right hand picking. Extending my fingers and have since I was a young lad about 35 years ago when I picked up the guitar.. :-) Very cool.
Paul Gilbert from shred to blues, knows it all but still got fresh ears and curiosity. That's how the greats are. Kudos to Sam who can play without shaking in front of the Man.
Remember that Paul himself invited him to his Guitar Escape after being so impressed by Sam's incredible talent. I had a chance to see him play live quite a few times at Paul's Guitar Escape, and Sam is everything that Paul said, and more!!! He does have an amaaazing future ahead of him, without a doubt!! Plus hes a cool, down to earth guy and had a blast drinking with him every night!!
Sam alternate picks everything and EJ economy picks (though that descending 6 note pattern is definitely an EJ thing, but I think EJ uses pull-offs for that?)
If this is 2012 talk about weird foreshadowing. Paul Gilbert was offered the position in Asia when Steve Howe retired and then recommended Sam Coulson.
Stupid thing is, that after watching this I just realised I can't do vibrato on a bend. I always bend and do my vibrato afterwards. I must put this right
Sam! If You`re looking for a singer...check out Paul's Heroes on Facebook...straight outta Chicago, he now lives in Berlin, Germany, but that'll just be a short hop over the pond, right?
Yes alot of the greats are fascinated by the new kids techniques, habits, rituals just to bring back memories. Live vicariously through these talented babies. So don't forget that Little Sammy, If DADDY GILBERT gets mad he will spank you on guitar. Lol
RACHEL PASTOR true lol . Paul Still smokes and rapes 90% shredders alive today even Rusty cooley and Jeff loomis lmao. Hes definitely not as good as PG in prime but gilbertosauros is still a living breathing shred machine just holding off his overly technical side to look a little bluesy as he ages
Paul is so humble making the interview which makes him the most lovable and even better guitar hero of all time!
Paul Gilbert is so humble
Sam and Paul are an example to us all with their natural egoless humility and devastatingly blistering ability. Awesome playing by Sam and irrepressible enthusiasm from Paul.
amazing player!!! paul is so humble he's the master sam is not far behind, amazing. but not so humble
What an honor to be interviewed by Paul Gilbert! Congrats!

Mike
thank you for allowing me to guitar tech on this. I am forever in debt to you legends
paul gilbert sort of looks like rocky balboa all amazed by tommy gun when in the end he could beat the guy even injured. such a humble man...

It's so great to see this, after all you talked about Paul Gilbert inspiring your technique. Well done sir!
Haha! I'm so happy for you!!! You made it :)

Wow. What an honor to have Paul Gilbert interview you. You deserve it :)
Sam great to see you with Paul.
He shows respect and recognition for you unique style
I can't even imagine how cool it would be for a legend like Gilbert to look you and up and give you this level of respect. You have earned good sir. That's really just awesome.

Tom
Awesome Sam, great interview with the maestro himself
Such a humble man, paul. Tries to learn from a kid as much as he can. Beautiful.
I do the exact same thing with my right hand picking. Extending my fingers and have since I was a young lad about 35 years ago when I picked up the guitar.. :-) Very cool.

Sam STOLE that from you, huh?
so awesome!! Fuck man how do you get your picking so tight man?!?! Amazing!
I'm thinking it due to the love of practicing. Could be just me.
Paul Gilbert from shred to blues, knows it all but still got fresh ears and curiosity. That's how the greats are. Kudos to Sam who can play without shaking in front of the Man.
Your two-string work is phenomenal. Very nicely done, man!

Great talent the force is strong in this one!
Those cascading Pentatonics came from Eric Johnson
+Kenny Ken sure did
yeah but Eric`s pentatonics sing..Sam`s are a weapon...so powerfull..love em both
i thought they came from zakk wylde, it reminds of him anyway.
liam erick Pffft

WOW. Sam and Paul are awesome. Nice one Sam look forward to hearing more great stuff from you.
Kudos Sam. Another great highlight for you. You're earning a lot of respect
So awesome and such honor! That very last shot is worth a place at the wall ;-)
Well, if maestro Gilbert says Mr Coulson is an authority on the guitar... then Mr Coulson IS an authority on the guitar!
If this is 2012 talk about weird foreshadowing. Paul Gilbert was offered the position in Asia when Steve Howe retired and then recommended Sam Coulson.
It was probably based on this interview.
Yep, I'm thinking that there is a very small Brotherhood of Sam and Paul level virtuosos who have each other on speed dial.
When Paul Gilbert says your alternate picking is good...you know your getting there!...
Looking forward to seeing you with Asia Sam, congratulations and welcome.
Best of luck to Sam. He's a good guy with a great talent.
Congrats Sam. That's amazing.
Paul is a legend, one of the best
Great interview!
Wow!! Fantastic!
fantastic Sam ,well done !
Excellent stuff Sam, Paul seemed genuinely interested in your technique, high praise indeed!
My observations about your playing were identical to Paul's, but what I had not considered was the high gain training. That is a very good tip indeed.
Sam has some pretty impressive technique and I like his phrasing as well. Looking forward to seeing what he does when he gets back to the UK
Imagine having sir Pablo saying those great things about your playing. Thats an honor!
Holy crap. This is too awesome
Awesome!!!! 🎉
You’re a legend mate!!!
This is great man!
stunning
Going to see him in a couple weeks at bb king blues club new york
Awesome!
This video reinforces the bad-to-the-bones-ness of both you and Paul. Amazing :)
Pauls a modest and humble guy,he was a monster rock by his early teens
holy shit, i cant believe i found a video of paul without his guitar!!!!!!
"I might try and find a singer or sing myself"...or become the guitarist for Asia and go on tour! Good for him!
Best week ever
Coulsom, a long time ago you have two amazing videos, Wolf Vs Jem and Les Paul Vs ES339, can you upload then?
great work Sam~ honor to get interviewed by non other than Paul gilbert
Isn't this where John Wetton discovered Sam? Love you, Sam!! Amazing guitarist !! ♡

Paul is right man. Two note per string licks are incredible man.
That´s awesome and Paul is such a cool guy. You deserve that in any way, Sam.
Cheers,
Robin :o)
Any videos of the jams at great guitar escape 2012? Can't seem to find them
He is the new Asia guitar player...
Was.
Metal, Noise, Blood, and Fire...Tell me what you most desire...
Stupid thing is, that after watching this I just realised I can't do vibrato on a bend. I always bend and do my vibrato afterwards. I must put this right
Sam, you should do a close up video on those EJ licks from 2:38 :)
I see two awesome guitar players on screen !
Your dreams have come true Sam.
See you in September dude ;-)
Amazing^)
Sam! If You`re looking for a singer...check out Paul's Heroes on Facebook...straight outta Chicago, he now lives in Berlin, Germany, but that'll just be a short hop over the pond, right?
He did it through black magic paul gilbert. BLACK MAGIC!!!!!!
wow. the master becomes the student :O
Or just the interviewer :)
Yes alot of the greats are fascinated by the new kids techniques, habits, rituals just to bring back memories. Live vicariously through these talented babies. So don't forget that Little Sammy, If DADDY GILBERT gets mad he will spank you on guitar. Lol

i can't believe, nobody said anything about Eric Johnson yet as soon as that guy started that 2 notes per string fast pentatonic runs
What A Twist!
nice! great interview
paul gilbert gave us buckethead, he might have the next big thing here
Paul Gilbert's the coolest guy on earth.
Whats this? I wanna see a jam with you two!
how does he mute all the six strings even he's playing only one or two strings solos?
paul is such a pro.
zakk wylde said those fingers sticking out are counter balances
Paul still digging those upside down iceman guitars
Congrats on the ASIA gig Sam
I love Paul, he says...ahhhh just play normal LOL. He wasn't gonna fk around with Sams instruction! LOL
Paul Gilbert is the best, man. This guy is a great player or else Gilbert wouldn't be talking to him so long.
Wow dude fair play you are getting your very own introduction by the master PAUL GILBERT himself!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable!
The wrist freckle is the source of his power
nice Job Sam!
that right there is inspiring! awesome technique dude! now if you'll excuse me i'm off to practice some more......lol
I have to agree, the Ain't Talking About Love intro......
The tea pinky extended just doesn't seem conducive with palm muting.
Good luck getting your head out a door for a week or two! Many congratulations once again,
couldn't happen to a cooler guy.
