The last arpeggio shape reminded me of one I learned watching a frank gambales vhs tape. Loads of sweeping. When I play them i feel like some misunderstood pretentious man.
It is so bizarre to me that Paul thought you only are "allowed" to do upstrokes when he was first starting?? I would love to ask him who he saw playing that made him think that?

Now I haven't really played for a few years and I have trouble playing with three fingers even around the octave area. I tried to get back in form but my fingers seem to be stiff and it doesn't seem to get better.
I had the same problem as you - managed to play probably only 10-15 minutes once in 3 months throughout the years because of shift work and living in a 1-bedroom apartment with my wife and kids. Just about 4-5 years ago after changing jobs, I resolved to play at least 10-30 minutes a day. After about 2-3 months, my fingers started to regain their dexterity.
What DiMarzios are in this pgm? Great sound on high gain and after lowering the volume! I'm considering pair of PAF Pros or Tonzone + PAF Pro. Into basswood body.
I have learned much from Paul -- though I confess there are some of his long stretch finger skipping licks I simply cant do --- I was not blessed with those long guitar fingers --- my hands are more like bear claws -- short fingers, but able to tear decks of cards in half. Even at slow tempo -- I simply can't REACH some of those wide intervals One example is the string skipped diminished arpeggios lower on the neck as he does ----- Nope, can't reach it HA
just to add my two cents here, try changing the intervals to the lower strings and carry the notes over to a narrower part of the bridge. I've had this same problem since I was 11, I'm 32 now and my hands are like little baby hands that got all fucked up by playing guitar incorrectly, and when a teacher told me that, my playing and my technique became much better in a couple of months.
Some people just neglect using the pinky from the get go when they first start playing and never utilize it. I don’t have particularly long fingers but I can get a good stretch from my index to pinky fingers. Utilization is the key.
