    Even guitar heroes have heroes, and Paul Gilbert’s most recent release is a testament to the enduring quality of the iconic rock that underpinned the shred-maestro’s pioneering days with Racer X through to Mr. Big, solo work, and countless additional ventures. Aptly named, The Dio Album is Paul’s heartfelt tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio, covering works from Dio’s extensive catalogue including Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and more. There’s an interesting catch: it’s entirely instrumental! Paul Gilbert stopped by Sweetwater to chop up some licks and riffs with our own Nick Bowcott, talking all things Dio, legacy albums, and the importance of understanding lead voicings and translating them to the guitar. Check it out!

      Ritchie Blackmore would definitely be one I would love to hear Paul take a stab at, I seen Ritchie in 2016 he is still amazing player there was an interview he had discussing Hendrix he called Hendrix always searching for notes, I have kept that in my head in my guitar journey

      Ya he is a guitar hero for sure what I really like about guitar players like him randy roads Marty Friedman is they always were good with teaching there techniques and little secrets they have were a young Eddie and a young yngwie ( I love both of them iconic guitarist) they both never liked showing people there techniques and guitar secrets Eddie was really bad that way when he young he would even turn around before they were signed so the other guitar players who were the likes of gorge lynch and randy roads I find that crazy as well he would turn around so they couldn't pick up on his guitar techniques it's true 😅

    Vivian Campbell deserves to be lauded to the stars and back for his incredible performances on the first 3 Dio albums. He brought so much of himself to the sound, the phrasing and the attack, the accents. Qualities that so many shredders don’t seem to see the importance in

    I loved him in my teen years, I love him even more now - he grew up and improved "musically": he focuses on phrasing, rhythm, chords, SONGS (!) and melody more now than the flashy stuff - I really dig his playing.

  • @joerectifier
    @joerectifier Год назад +9

    Paul knows something we all hopefully learn over time. We learn something once we gain some facility in our playing - especially if you video tape yourself - playing fast is certainly easier than playing slow and playing slow with time, feel and phrasing that sits in the progression. It’s certainly not easy to get your fingers to move fast and it takes a lot of time and our egos think that makes us good. Playing fast does not make one good - playing in time, with rhythm, motif, phrasing and understanding the underlying progression makes one a good guitarist. Highlighting the progression with feel, and transferring an emotion makes one good.

    Paul has the greatest attitude, talent up the &@$ but yet seems so appreciative of the field he is apart of.
    His tributes are a reflection of that.

    Paul Gilbert - A technical guitarist who attended rock guitar school! Consequently, when he is playing all these vocal melodies it's all just a bit dull and flat! It doesn't matter what guitar faces you pull on every note! Paul Gilbert has even tried to play the blues and that just sounded technical!
