Time: 5-6 hours
Cost: $2000
Skill Level: Moderate to Expert
Tools:
Safety glasses
Hearing protection
Shovel
Pickaxe
Wheelbarrow
Compactor
Trowel
Rubber mallet
Level
Masonry hammer
Shopping List:
Natural stone steppers
Spray paint
Stone pack material (crushed stone and stone dust)
Stone dust
Plastic edging
Steps:
1. Before doing any project that requires digging, always contact your utility locating service to identify the location of water lines, gas lines, etc.
2. Use spray paint or some other type of marker to determine where the path will go to help make digging easier.
3. Use a pick axe to loosen the soil in between the lines of the new walkway. Then, use a shovel to dig out the path. Depending on the thickness of the stone, plan to dig down about 6-8”. For easy removal, dump the soil into a wheelbarrow.
4. Use a compactor to get the base as solid as possible. These can be rented at most home centers. A hand tamper would also work, but multiple steps in this process will require compacting, so it’s worth it to rent the compactor. Use hearing protection while running the compactor.
5. Once the walkway is packed down, add two inches or so of stone pack and compact that as well.
6. Add a couple more inches of stone pack on top of that and compact it.
7. Mix up the stone dust in the wheelbarrow with water.
8. Scoop the stone dust mixture onto the walkway in small sections at a time. Smooth it out with a trowel.
9. Place the stepping stones in a logical order on top of the stone dust. Wiggle the stones as low as possible to ensure the stone dust fills in the gaps underneath the stone as well. A rubber mallet and a level should be used to make sure the stones are placed evenly.
10. Continue this process all the way across the walkway. If a stone feels like a close fit but isn’t quite right, try cutting it with the back end of a masonry hammer.
11. Secure plastic edging around both sides of the walkway. They come with stakes that can be hammered easily into the ground.
Resources:
Because natural stone is a naturally-occurring substance, it will not always be possible to match other natural stone in a landscape. Mark suggests identifying the nearest stone and masonry yards first to see if they have what you’re looking for.
The natural stone stepper Mark used is called a “New York Paver”, which he got from Cavicchio Greenhouses (www.cavicchio.com/ ).
The plastic edging is Vigoro No-Dig Landscape Edging Kit, and is found at most home centers.
The compacter Mark used can be rented from most home centers. The other materials Mark used for this job, including the mallet and edging can also be found at the home center.

Amen haha
I miss you Roger Cook, I wish you well and my dream is to be like you one day! Your a role model and inspiration! Love from Minnesota!
Change World shut up
@@BeastMode-yg3xs it’s ok if you’re mad
Good luck Rodger..God Bless you and your family...
So happy to see Roger there at the end.
Even before the announcement, I knew something was off. I'm too used to these guys now
Best to Roger and his family! I've been watching him since before I can remember, and he inspires me to work hard and smart.
Gilbert Appleby ahem *hahd and smaht*
Lol. When ever I do landscape work, I’m always make sure to wear my super white pants so I don’t get dirty.
Lol. Yeah white never dirty. LOL
They make it look easy. Hard part is the setup and obtaining on-site supplies. Also don’t forget the numerous trips to the hardware store. Also mixing the wheel barrel full of cement not easy.
That is incredibly nice looking dirt under their grass. My yard is all rocks and clay.
Ninety percent of the time when I see these home addition segments and someone has to dig they're working through the softest, smoothest, and most powdery soil you can imagine. Come out to Georgia and dig through our "Georgia clay" where it's generally rock hard and you're hitting a stone or three every shovel full.
I truly hope Roger gets healthy again. The guy had a lot of passion for his craft.
Ive done this with flagstone, but used a rubber edging from costco instead. Better for winters as plastic can snap if you accidentally hit it, and you nail it in the same, and more flexible for curves. Cost a bit more though
Some people? ROGER CALLS IT PACK! DON'T FORGET THAT ROCK BOY! 😂
Seeing them all together was a treat. Always good to see ole Rōch'.
Damn, I miss roger i hope he is healthy
He's too old his back is done.
He is dead
@@aiagames9350 'ol rogu went back to see how her walkway was doing and just had to take her inside and tap her gaaaaden patch!!!And who wouldnt! That's what killed him
He’s not dead
He was in the video at the end
Lovely job mark, and great to see Roger at the end 👍
My best to Roger cook, hope to see him soon.
What's wrong with him
Ahmed Jabbar recently he’s had some health issues, he’s not going to be on the show as often. Spending more time with his family.
@@raylegend808 that is very sad news I prefer watching his and Tom's videos as they explain in detail
Roger if you see this then I wish you well and hope to see you make a speedy recovery
Ahmed Jabbar you can see his letter he wrote, do a google search titled ( a letter from roger cook).
@@ahmedjabbar7467 his back isn't the best anymore he's getting older and well he can lift heavy things any more like before.
Water the stone before you pack especially if your going to be putting something wet over it. All the moisture frown the mix will be drawn down into the dry stuff bellow loosening it up and those stones are going to shift
Wish I had that beautiful brown easy dirt to dig in...nothing but rock here in Missouri.
Awesome video! These guys are great, their ability and know-how make it look so easy and it really inspires you to get goin with home projects!
Nice looking walkway! Turned out great. Thanks for the detailed video.
Great to see Roger back!
"oh Hai Mark!"
LOL, her acting is better than Tommy's. And I'm not talking about Silva.
@@utubewillymanat least he did not hit hurr, he did nuhht.
She was hammering with both hands 😂

I see Roger, I press like.
Looks much better than whats in back.
This is such a dad comment but that dirt looks incredible! All we have here is sand.
Nice to see Roger again
This old house is so good and inspirational keep up the good work
I wish I needed some thing that had to be done so this old house can do it for me 👌👍
The wicked thick Boston accents talking about how tough the Irish are...making me homesick!
I really like this video very much
Great!
Now people will keep walking on the dead grass where they used to!!!
😂☝🏻
Yeah I'd have made that curve a bit wider.
I miss Roger on Cheers. Errr... I mean Cliff.
Good seeing Roger! God bless
Lots of hard work, nice job mark!
Great video! I'm getting ready to build a stone walkway and have never built one. Where do you buy stone dust? What is the name of it? Any help is much appreciated!
Call any of the local masonry/garden centers. You could also contact any local landscaper. They should be able to hook up up.
1:08 nice
WOW! those white pants stayed pretty white!
I would have had her remove them. 😉😎
You can bleach white jeans, towels, etc. White is OK. ( Shame on you, Chris!)
Is this the first time I see Kevin wearing the same shirt in the episode and the outro?
Oh hi Mark!
Great video! Anyone know what kind of material was used under the flag stone? Cement, concrete, or mortar?
Cut her some slack there, she got out and helped didn’t she. I’ll bet she’s a great wife, mother and homemaker and cute to boot also!
What a beauty. I would build a pathway wherever she wanted to go.
"how deep are we gonna go" at least 6inches.. alright alright alright
GoldNi0020 this time he was dealing with something bigger so he went 8 😂
@@HectorDiaz-xk7iy She was happy when he said 8
Crotch Banister sounds like you have a couple inches dry unused material 😂 but it’s there when we need it right lol... your comment reminds me of ralphie mays comedy bit called these are glorious times go check it out if you haven’t yet guy is a legend
I don’t understand why he cut the pathway from one edge of the staircase but cut about a foot short on the other side. Bugged me the whole video.
He messed up. It should have side to side or centered on steps.
Well spotted! Shoddy!!
yeah not sure why no one said anything it's pretty apparent
Any alternative to the “stone dust” mixed with water? It looks like it works great but I don’t think I’m gonna find that in Florida. We can use paver base and maybe sand but the stone dust looks really nice.
any fine stone
Omg hit it Emily! 😂
Very high maintenance walkway.
What if we can’t dig out 6” due to roots?? Stuck with gravel only?
Awesome pro job! Looks amazing
Is that "stone dust" with water or portland cement with sand and water? I've never seen stone dust that can move like that.
"Ya hear that?
That's solid"
Rodger calls it pack. Not just some people
Like & Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃
The plastic edging is not sustainable. Any other ideas for keeping the vegetation enroaching on the paver stones?
Spray with any herbicide. One application and you should be good for all season.
Beautiful 😊
Good stuff, as usual.
Very interesting video.
Thanks a lot guys 👍
Once everything is said and done, any courier will just cut through your yard and avoid the walkway at all costs. Enjoy.
Very nice job
They need to do a uk special and see how our electric code compares to the USA
Bailey Doggett no
Seriously! How? Seriously! How?
Seriously! How?:
Making it unnecessarily complicated. Here in Germany there's one code for all 16 states, so an electrician could work everywhere in the whole country. I really thought making things the complicated way is a german special atribute, but in this case the USA are King...
Baily Doggett:
The UK are a bit special with the ring circuits for the outlet circuits, but the rest is the same as here in Germany. The ring circuits are not a bad thing, but it's making the things a bit more complicated to get the ring symetric and balanced (resistance). Only we use different cables with a double sheathing and our earth wires are fully insulated (no sleeves required) and they have always the same dimension as the other wires, afaik in twin-and-earth cables the earth conductor is a bit smaller than the others.
@@Marcel_Germann true but "states" in Germany are nothing like states in the U.S. In America states are they're own governments, making their own laws, taxes, etc. That's why we are called the United STATES of America, with the idea that each state is it's own entity but United under the stars and stripes. In recent times we have strayed away from that with an increasingly growing central government but the founders envisioned a place where state governments were even more powerful than the federal central government.
Here the states have their own governments and parlaments too. But federal law is always above state law. Here in the state of Hesse the death penalty is still in the constitution for major crimes, but in the federal constitution it's withdrawn. Some things are a matter of state, for example the police. The federal police is only responsible for train stations and airports. Every state has its own police with own equipment like sidearms for example which differ in most cases. Even the laws for law enforcement are different. The states have all ministers which you can find in the federal level, except a secretary of state.
And there's a federal control instance called the "Bundesrat" (federal council) which are delegates of the states. They are the last instance to approve federal laws, or disapprove them...so they have the last word on laws the "Bundesregierung" release. They have to vote for all federal laws, how many votes they have depends on the number of citizens living in that state.
The thing is electrical installations are not regulated by the state here or by any law, they are created by independant parties which are professionals. In the laws you'll find a passage that electrical installations must be "state-of-the-art" defined in regulations and codes, and this state-of-the-art is defined by the VDE for electrical installations. The VDE is an independant testing organisation for all matters of electric installations, materials and tools which are used there. It's the largest organisation of that kind in Europe and it is comparable to your UL.
It's the same thing with plumbing, their regulations are released by the DVGW.

I like this new guy okay.... I wanna know..... what kind of watch is he wearing?
Nice job
Nice job!!
oh hi mark
no water with the 5/8 minus?
Portland cement mixed with wet stone dust similar to a vid you did with blue stone pavers...? Couldn’t tell from the video.
Haha the way she hammers
thats type 1 gravel. it needs to be wet for proper compaction
Stone dust and water? No portland cement?
Hey what can we do to get you all to re-release the full seasons of some the houses you worked on?
They used to be accessible a few years ago.
Gahhden Path!
I'm little bit worried about Mark's finger, when Emily hammered that.
I wish test it out the Goal Zero yeti 3,000 I like to see that video
The edging is "extra insurance" against what?
Martin W the stones shifting out of place over time. The ones in the middle have rigidity from the outer stones. And the outer stones have that edging. Nailed into the ground. Stronger than the dirt and grass.
Lucas Friedfeld That makes sense. Thank you.
@@lucasfriedfeld2048 - That plastic garden edging isn't going to hold a 40lbs stone + 200lbs man. At best it'll keep the grass from attempting to grow over and define a hard edge to manicure the lawn.
thechosendude you have right thats what the pourpose of it. Its not related to keeping stones together
@thechosendude Thats why its cheap insurance.Heaviner metal edging would have done a better job, but I guess that this being a backyard, its not gonna get as much traffic, and should last a while.
There was a guy in the early days of TOH that did stone work, I believe his nickname was Count Rockula but I can't remember his real name.
who let grandpappy Winchester join This Old House's crew?

Jesus, that's the front of the house? I thought that was the back of the house.
That’s the back deck as she stated in the first 15sec.
@@dboy820 that was the front. I guess New England style.
she inadvertently said back twice, the big patio is the yard
white pants while doing this kind of work?
Would it be recommend to make a foundation layer of reinforced concrete in very dry and hot areas?
not necessary.
Roger!!!!☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
Idk how i feel about someone other than Roger doing a walkway

@@Vallecaucanisimo I had to! After doing the same and finding no one. Smh

For everyone asking about Roger. www.thisoldhouse.com/more/letter-roger-cook
Teach this lady to hammer properly lol.
How much would just the stone cost for this?
this lady had a chance to open with "oh hi, Mark" and didn't do it.
How much does something like this cost
How do I mix concrete as seen at 2:27? What materials and what's the ratio between them and water?
Its a low strength setting mortar ...Stone dust, 7-8 parts and one part portand cement mix in wheelbarrow
Mix it with water to the consistency of peanut butter.
I think he did a great instructional video, however safety first. What's up with the safety goggles on top of his head instead of covering his eyes. They both should be wearing safety goggles if he was chipping away the stone edges.
Rip Roger. 😭
Where's Raja? I'm sure this guy is great and all, but surely TOH should say something. People care about these old farts. They've been helping us bust knuckles and learn new curse words for decades.
Hope you're well, Roger.
Watch all the way to the end! He's there and looks a lot better.
He sure put that woman to work.
Stone Dust? What is that?
What is stone dust?
Nice work but next time wear your safety glass next time
