At last! A video that explains this project in terms I understand, and at a pace that lets me see exactly what's involved. I'm 83 and determined to lay flagstone from the back gate to the back door, only about 10 feet. I've dug a 35" trench out of the grass-covered gravel; now it looks like I need borders, stakes and crushed stone. Thanks for the help!
I really enjoyed your video and your tips. I'm just a homeowner who is planning on doing a small walkway from my porch to the driveway and I have never done anything like this before so it was a big help thank you
And there it is..... My complaint has nothing to do with your video. RUclips is officially hiding dislikes. I can no longer look to see a ratio and determine if this is an effective technique and project based on dislikes and likes. That being said. Looks great!! Thanks for the the upload! :)
Beutiful job , I have thinner pieces of flagstone that I want to surround w rocks in a small ( 8×15) area any suggestions on how to minimize shifting .Thank you
Спасибо большое, смотрю вас в России. (Thank you very much, I'm watching you in Russia.) Хорошая идея, у меня есть рядом карьер с таким камнем. (It's a good idea, I have a quarry with such a stone nearby.)
We just set our perma sand today. We noticed that we have a few flawed areas that can use some more sand. It has hardened by now. Not yet 24 hours. Can I reapply more perma sand and water it again? Or are we stuck with the imperfections?
One year later, but maybe you can help. I have a river rock walkway. How do I stabilize it. I want to put in a flagstone path. Do I need to remove the river stone?
Hey Tamara. Unfortunately yes. If it’s sinking and shifting now it will continue to do so. Dig it out, put a good 2-4” base in and pack with a tamp then lay new flagstone path. The thicker the base and better the packing, the longer it will stay just how you build it. Now go kick that job in the teeth!! Blessings!
Please don’t use Round up. Glyphosate is incredibly toxic. There are cancer lawsuits being paid out because of that stuff. Get the weeds early. Hand pull them, it doesn’t take much more effort.
Hey Joseph. Yes it’s the same process for a patio. However. Make sure you do your research if you have consistently colder weather than our climate in East Texas. Some of the materials and thicknesses may need to be adjusted.
@@lawnandlight okay awesome I’m over here in Bossier so I know what you’re talking about. Thanks I really appreciate it. I was worried that I would have to put like a 4in gravel base after the geotech fabric. But that makes it easier.
@@skags81 10 4. I would just say that the more base you put in and the more you compact the dirt, the longer that the patio will stay where you installed it. If we were doing a patio, we would rent a compactor to get the dirt good and tight before laying base and then also compact the base material. With the walkway that we installed in this video, it wasn't imperative to be perfect. Therefor, some shifting over time was not a big deal to the client. Sorry I didn't answer your question correctly the first time. I thought you had watched the other video where we talk about building on concrete. If you are doing this for a customer, I would definitely install more base and use a compactor. If you are doing it for yourself and are ok with some shifting over time, then this method would be fine. Hope that helps.
Hey Wes. Hope your having a fantastic day and pointing people towards the Lord. It’s been a while since we did this job but I think we charged around $1800. Materials were around $550 and we had about 18 man hours in the project.
@@lawnandlight I can see from your comments your not at all interested in others opinions. I'm going to anyway. Your idea of building dirt up there on the outside of that plastic wall is a really bad idea. You should of sunk everything deeper leaving a more level lawn/stone. Your instruction how to do this was fine but the end result is what I'm talking about.
Or the base thickness should be in inches? This is my first project and I’m doing it for my mother. I love the art of it , just nervous on messing it up.
If it were my project at my house, I would want the walkway to follow the grade. This will prevent the walkway from impeding drainage away from the side of the house. Just make sure the stones edges do not create a trip hazzard.
very nice , thanks for share
Yes mam. Thanks for watching
The rocks look beautiful but how do you avoid seeing the border? I am not a fan of being able to see the border...
You can do it without border. You just need really good sod

Beautifully done. I'm currently making a walking pathway through my garden. Thanks for the inspiration.❤
Thanks Susan. Good luck on your project

I know. I agree. Everybody gets a trophy nowadays. Thanks for watching.
I've watched several videos about building a flagstone pathway and this was by far the most helpful, thank you. Wish you were in the Fort Worth Area!
Hey Griffin. Thanks for watching and the compliment. Good luck n your project
Very helpful and I like the simplicity. Will use this info for my next job!
Awesome!! Glad it helped

From one landscape business owner to another..great video man!
I appreciate you encouragement and thank you for supporting the channel. Best of luck this year in your company
Hi, great job! What type of stakes and screws did you use with the bender board? Thanks!
Hey there. Thanks. I think this one we used regular wood stakes with a star bit screws
We just set our perma sand today. We noticed that we have a few flawed areas that can use some more sand. It has hardened by now. Not yet 24 hours. Can I reapply more perma sand and water it again? Or are we stuck with the imperfections?
It shouldn’t be a problem to reapply. The holes are just where it settled. Do a quick Google search to confirm that though.
The one you did where there is a mortar base is so much nicer IMO. I don’t know if I could do that on my own without screwing it up though!
It is a lot of work but you can do it.
I suspect it was done to budget restrictions of homeowner. Maybe homeowners couldn't afford to have pavers set in concrete. I like the natural look.
Very neat! quick quesiton, which method would you say is best? Mortar method or this one? why would people prefer DC method and not Mortar?
Less work

What thank you
Thank you, very helpful!
Our pleasure. Thank you for being here
Can I mortar the joints when laying it in DG?
That’s a good question that I don’t know the answer to
Thanks so much for the video! It’s very informative and I can’t wait to get to work on my yard 🙏🏼🔥.
Our pleasure. Good luck on your project!
Is the edge absolutely necessary? What would happen if I don’t use one?
No. If you are on flat ground it’s fine
Thank you! I’m looking to do something very similar, this was very helpful
Thanks for watching. Good luck on your project.
Very nice / clean / detailed job❗👍
Thanks Leticia. Have a fantastic Saturday!

Thanks so much Chantelly. We appreciate you watching.
Great video-thank you!
Thanks for watching
Great info! Proud of you guys.
Thanks brother. Appreciate you tuning in!!!
Would pea gravel work instead of decomposed granite?
It would be ok but not as good. Pea gravel doesn’t lock into place well
I’m thinking of doing something like this. Did you tamp the DG down after you placed the flagstone pavers on top?
Hey Camila. Yes mam. Tamp it down good. The ticker and more packed the base, the better the path will hold its original position
How deep did you dig below grade ? For foundation
On this one, it’s been a while so I don’t exactly remember. Best bet is to go 4” and compact after every inch or so of base
I have this, but I have grass and weeds coming up between my river rock. I went with pea stone sized river rock.
Awesome. Just spray with round up
Please don’t use Round up. Glyphosate is incredibly toxic. There are cancer lawsuits being paid out because of that stuff. Get the weeds early. Hand pull them, it doesn’t take much more effort.
What is that type of boarder called ??
That job was actually closer to $2k. I was thinking of a different one. Border is called bend-a-board. Or bender board. It’s composite
How deep did you dig the trench? Would 7” be ok?
Should be
What did you used on the side?
Bend a board or bender board. I can’t remember what it’s called. It’s composite
Would this work for a large area as well like connecting an existing patio to a pool decking ?
Hey Joseph. Yes it’s the same process for a patio. However. Make sure you do your research if you have consistently colder weather than our climate in East Texas. Some of the materials and thicknesses may need to be adjusted.

Do you use 6 inch or 4 inch bender board?
Typically 4” but 6” will work too
Excellent, Thanks so much. Is there a reason, other than cost, that you use bender board instead of metal edging?
We like the way bend-a-board holds up better in the long run. The metal will rust and degrade over 5-10 years and fall apart.
Clean job site is a happy job site 💯
Amen to that
The “little bit extra” is damn right!
lol.
Hey brethren in christ... can u tell me what a job like that would cost? Or an idea of how u charged?? Thank u

Quit a bit less than it would be now. I think we charged around $3500 for it but can’t remember exactly.
Beautiful ❣️
Thanks Cindy
It would have been nice to see the sod border when finished.
😀
Is that dg pretty good at keeping out the weeds?
If you put weed mat down and pack the dg really good it does. The thicker you lay it, the better it will prevent weeds.
Thanks, I know I need to talk to contractors so they don't leave a mess as bad as yours. wow.

How deep did you dig the trench ?
Go however deep you would like your base to be plus the thickness of your rock
So guide me on this, I have a 2 inch thick stepping stone. What do you recommend the path depth should be ?

Good comment. It works in hotter climates
