So, the deal was that Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat 2 were released almost at the same time for the Saturn in 1996 (different development teams porting them). All of the real development went into UMK3, with MK2 already being a 3 year old game with minimal demand. If I remember right, PROBE / Aklaim didn't go with redbook audio for MK2 because it was taking too long for the legal department to get approval for it, so they just used the assets for the floppy DOS version. Had they waited any longer, it would have been cancelled. Using the DOS assets also made it easier to program and cut down on load times. At least that is what I remember reading in the forums about 20 years ago.
If there were any rights issues, they wouldn't be able to use Dan Forden's compositions at all. What most likely happened here is that they either didn't have the time to polish the port or didn't want to mess with the code, so they ported the existing PC version to 32-bit consoles with only minimal tweaks. The PS1 port isn't as good as it could have been either.
I remember when this game came out and my personal opinion was having MK2 on the Saturn made the platform look so bad. PlayStation already had MK3 and the Saturn was getting the older version? MK2 wasn't nearly as celebrated then as it is now. Especially not with the various versions of MK3 out.
From what I read before, the reason this port was rushed is because Acclaim’s license to port Mortal Kombat and MK2 was about to expire. The first MK was supposed to be ported too, but it never came to fruition. Yes I remember seeing ads for it in a gaming magazine.
Probe really didn’t care, they ruined the Genesis version they did okay with the 32x and completely destroyed The Saturn and PlayStation versions. Sculptured Software should’ve done all versions of MK2.
@@grgmj1980Genesis MK2 was an Excellent port. It was missing speech samples and that's about it. The later ports were welcome but, the Genesis version already nailed it.
Hahhaha when you see Acclaim and Probe attached, you already freaking know it’s gonna be trash. I don’t understand how Nintendo got a good developer of MK2. It’s also what went wrong with the PS1 version too.
I never imagined that this acclaimed Saturn version would have these audio and loading problems, without announcing the names, strange music and longer loading times, I was disappointed. I really like the SNES version, without belittling the others
Graphically it looks identical to the arcade but there are some weird spots where it loads ,too bad that there are sound fx missing but i have to admit i kinda dig the music!!!nice to see all these different versions!!! keep it up bro 🎉🎉🎉!!!
@KoolKeithProductions well i have to agree that the snes version is very impressive for a port that came out before this,on cartridge media and on a less powerful system, having almost all the sound fx there, music intact and carbon copy backgrounds, can't argue with that!!!
Visually, it’s a bit lower resolution. It’s not super obvious on a CRT but when compared side by side you’ll notice some things. It seems like their use of system generated music was to have it so it could somewhat stream data as it goes. But they think it through all the way on either PS1 or Saturn and both turned out way worse than they should have.
We gotta remember that this was very early in the cd era. Tho it makes me wonder if they had wanted to try a Sega CD version but couldn't and had to resort to Sega 32x
Thanks Tas, it’s pretty good I believe the pros outweigh the cons, mind you I’m biased when it comes to all things MK2 so I dunno lol appreciate the comment 👊🏼
I grew up playing the Super Nintendo version with my childhood friend who happened to own it. Then 2 years later I got the game on Sega Saturn and immediately noticed the sound effects were different and always thought they didn't sound nearly as cool as the SNES sound effects. (Sub Zero's freeze in particular) But overall I was still happy with this version. But when I watch you play it over 24 years later.... This port has loading times that I never even noticed a child.
We were more patient back in the day, with everything available at our disposal with the Internet and smart phones etc we want everything instantly now, so no loading never bothered us back in the day lol we are spoiled now. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
Ah, Probe. They couldn't do MK2 justice on anything. The Genesis version lost so many voice samples, sound effects, animation and whatnot, and it even lost the damn ending pictures. The 32X version got a lot put back in, but it too was missing voices, SFX and the ending images. The Saturn version should have basically been arcade perfect, but it had a load of issues with nonsensical load pauses, plenty of missing voices and SFX, and glitchy issues (like how Scorpion's fire fatality doesn't have a debris explosion if you're on the left side of the arena, but it does if you're on the right side). I didn't have much of an issue with their redoing the music, as it was still decent, even if it was Euro-ified. The closest Probe came to porting MK2 properly was with the PC port. They still messed with the music (why was there no CD audio like with their port of MK1?), but most of the graphics, voices, SFX, and the damn ending screens, were in there. Thank God Scultured Software was brought in for the Genesis port of MK3. God only knows what Probe would have done to that game.
@@shadowopsairman1583 I think it depends on the format they use. With cartridges, they sucked with memory management. They put so much into one area, and then completely neglected other areas, instead of trying to balance it out (like what Sculptured Software did with MK3). But when they didn't have memory constraints, Probe could do good work. MK2 on PC is a really good port (though they handled the music in an odd way). Same thing with MK1.
Umm, no. Different ports usually had different companies porting them. Depending on the console, different things needed to be changed to suit the respective platform they were being ported to. I don't know why this is so hard for people to understand.
I have all 3 versions, and in my opinion the 64 version is the "worst" the no loading is real nice and you don't have to worry about Shang Tsung loading every time he morphs. If it wasn't for the controller on the 64 when my friends and I do retro night, we would probably play that version
Acclaim really did the MK series dirty with a lot of their ports. A lot of missed opportunities. I was really disappointed when I got MK II on the Saturn in '97 but it did grow on me and I do appreciate the pros over the cons with this version. I do remind myself that I do finally have a arcade perfect port at home with my MK II Deluxe A1Up so that helps.
Saw this at EB Games and bought it immediately. Came home and played and was never more disappointed in a game in my life. Took it back the next day and got 30 store credit. The lag, the wrong music, the lack of voices, it was an absolute mess.
As I understand it was difficult to program specifically a 2D engine in the Saturn because instructions and manuals were in Japanese only. Ports of arcade or PC games were not their best. Another example is the Saturn port of Doom which was terrible. This same situation happened to early Playstation 1 games were development teams were not able to optimize their code due to lack of documentation in English. It was a different time unlike today that we have the internet.
Are you aware that the MS-DOS Version supports external Midi? You can as such, set Mortal Kombat II for DOS to Roland SC-55 and emulate connecting it to something with the Sound Fonts of a Yamaha XG system via Timidity++ and get absolutely awesome sound.
You’re a smart man by far. Mortal Kombat two is the best Mortal Kombat entry of all time. The gameplay smooth. And the characters in the game is balance and a banging soundtrack.
Great Video man. If I'm right and you get the Saroo for the saturn and put MKII on it the load times are next to 0. I might be wrong on that, but it does play better for me.

I rememeber getting this at the time, coming off the back of the fantastic SNES version and i remember the little loading pauses for fatalities, morphs etc. absolutely killed this verison for me. UMK3 beat it hands down on Saturn, even though, like you, number 2 is THE GAME!!!

The Sega Saturn was in good working condition then later the CD drive started having problems like freezing the game, distorted sound, black screen, and glitching out. You said it Darryl…while the other games are enjoyable , no doubt…I think MK 2 is the peak of the series…the way GTA 3 and Vice City was to that series..it took over pop culture
The Saturn had very low system memory. I'm pretty sure that had something to do with the fact that you had to go to the options menu to enable the announcement of the characters' names at the end of matches. Whenever there are cuts made to console ports, it's almost ALWAYS because of memory and/or storage constraints.
I’m not sure if you saw on the other video but can you play MK Gold. And if possible can you use Sektor? There’s a funny thing that happens when fire a homing missile then immediately do his flamethrower fatality.
I actually played MK Gold in a video a month or so ago on the CRT from a different angle using Sektor lol I never did see that glitch though. I will be revisiting it again soon 👊🏼
I remember playing this game on Saturn and umk3 all suffered from extreme loading times even had to load the voice announcements as all voice anything where cd tracks and had to be played as such not as voice samples
It's wild to think a single hobbyist could create 3DO MKII in his spare time, yet a team of commercial developers with a huge budget manage could only manage this turd. With a mega-blockbuster title this big, I don't see how someone could look and say "Yep, looks good. Ship it"
It is hardly a turd, but it was not without flaws. You have to understand that by the time they released it in 1996, MK2 was "old", so it was rushed through development using audio assets from the floppy version on MS-DOS. While it was missing the sound of the arcade, it DID load fast and DID have most of the graphics of the arcade version. Controls were also spot-on. I can't remember, but I recall there being a reason they did not use the redbook audio at the time. Possibly a legal issue.
Should’ve picked it up for collections sake. I find just looking at the package or game itself brings a sense of nostalgia back. Thanks for the comment 🙏🏽
@austinwillcut4919 when did it come out? I don't remember ever seeing this version. Was it released outside of the USA? Because when Trilogy dropped I only remember the ps1/n64 versions. I thought Saturn just got Ultimate. Damn I was wrong
With your power, can you convince midway/wb to do an official og mortal kombat komplete. Love the mugan but wish it was based on the arcade code. It was pc based I believe
Nah SNES is quite a bit better. MS Dos version is arguably better than SNES and finally there is Playstation...and Saturn. All of them are easily better than the ugly 32X version that's barely better than the Genesis version and still missing crucial content.
There really should've been no reason this version couldn't have been a direct arcade port. The SNES version was one of the best & that was running on hardware that was 4 years older than the Sega Saturn.
Ram is tight and CD seek time would leave noticeable gaps between tracks. Would have made it even more annoying with even longer pauses between transitions.
There's a lot missing from this game, main thing is the sound and the announcer not saying round one and there names, mortal kombat to me is the sound effects and the names and saying all the wonderful things mortal kombat says, mortal kombat will always be my favorite game for the rest of my life too, mortal kombat and killer instinct best fighting games ever
I don't remember the reason, but I was kind of disappointed with this version. It was cheap and since MK2 was a game that I played a lot, I thought it would be a great acquisition for my Saturn. I wanted to learn all characters that I was not good with and beat the game with everyone that see all endings, but I only played a few times
Probe was absolutely lazy with both this and the Playstation port. All they did was port the already existing MS-DOS version of the game. They also didn't change its MIDI composition from the PC, instead of using Red Book Audio ripped from the arcade version. Glad Williams took over with porting the IP with Mortal Kombat 3 and UMK3 later. The Saturn as more than capable of handling the arcade version of Mortal Kombat 2.
I’ve probably bought and played every mk2 except for saturn version. The visuals are arcade but that sound quality yikes! Totally unexpected cause games like x men COTA was so good on the Saturn but terrible on ps1.

I’ve been playing a TON of MK2 lately bro. Can’t get enough of MK2 Remix. So I know how you feel lol. Hard to get sick of MK2
Absolutely bro, I haven’t got sick of it in 30 years I doubt I ever will lol 👊🏼
Watched your video and tried this version myself, thinking it can't be this choppy, but it is lol
Great video! Playing on OG hardware? Looks great
Hey hope you had a great holiday 😊 have you ever managed to fight hornbuckle looks extremely tuff to pull off
Why is Jade white in this version? Looks like Caitlin Clark
MK II is m fav game ever
I obtained ultimate MK for the saturn and enjoyed it.
SEGA Saturn Mortal Kombat Trilogy?
Doesn't exist
@@MPK112233 Actually it does but it's harder to get.
@austinwillcut4919 when did it come out? I don't remember ever seeing this version. Was it released outside of the USA? Because when Trilogy dropped I only remember the ps1/n64 versions. I thought Saturn just got Ultimate. Damn I was wrong
@@MPK112233 It came out in August of 1997 and was a US release. I've seen copies of it on Ebay.
@@MPK112233It does. It's basically the PSX version.
i can’t wait for them ti go further in the NES version of mortal kombat
YOUR A HUGE MK2 FAN THAT NEW TO ME UMK3 MAYBE YEAH BUT MK2 COOL
Nice going to watch this after watching sonic 3
With your power, can you convince midway/wb to do an official og mortal kombat komplete. Love the mugan but wish it was based on the arcade code. It was pc based I believe
Anyone else just listen to these videos while working out?
It is strange how addictive this is
This version or MK2 in general? I understand addiction BECAUSE of MK2 lol thanks for the comment 👊🏼
MK2 is your favourite but what would you say is your 2nd favourite? MK1 or MK3?
The Sega 32X version is the best version outside of the arcade version
Nah SNES is quite a bit better. MS Dos version is arguably better than SNES and finally there is Playstation...and Saturn. All of them are easily better than the ugly 32X version that's barely better than the Genesis version and still missing crucial content.
There really should've been no reason this version couldn't have been a direct arcade port. The SNES version was one of the best & that was running on hardware that was 4 years older than the Sega Saturn.
So odd that a cd based version is lacking music, voices and effects
Ram is tight and CD seek time would leave noticeable gaps between tracks. Would have made it even more annoying with even longer pauses between transitions.
6:14 reptile getting torn apart 😂
Wut
@reptile without reptile
Saturn MKII played on Saroo really negates the loading times, give it a try
There's a lot missing from this game, main thing is the sound and the announcer not saying round one and there names, mortal kombat to me is the sound effects and the names and saying all the wonderful things mortal kombat says, mortal kombat will always be my favorite game for the rest of my life too, mortal kombat and killer instinct best fighting games ever
Do you own a Saroo ?
World record for pc MK Trilogy was broken 3 days ago. It was insane.
The mini-loads during the fights kill this for me. I was so disappointed.
Regarding all the ports, who the heck changes Raiden to Rayden?
Can u play killer instinct gold on n64 please
ARE YOU GOING TO DO MKX AND MK11 GAMEPLAYS
Why are you yelling at me lol it’s a possibility 👊🏼
I didn't think this actually released. Goddamn, I woulda been kinda pissed actually. if only they coulda made the 32X sprites just a little bigger
It was sold in stores. I worked in electronics during the time it released and our store had it for sale.
28:14 Nice!
Nice and then BOOM, I lose lol
I Haven't Played a Sega Saturn Since 1998 😢
This is the version I played when it came out. LFG!
HOLY nice save at the end! Well done!
you won the game with the last credit in round 3 on shao khan 😅
😮 I remember renting this as a kid and being so disappointed just was way off very underwhelming experience 🤦🏾♂️
Is this emulation? I just rather play the SNES version or maybe 32X. The sounds on this version kill me.
This should've been an easy home run, Shame as the Saturn was a 2D powerhouse.
They had the best ports of most 2D fighters
Plz play Spider-Man 3 on PS3, Xbox 360 or PC
Saturn gets MK2 so wrong but got UMK3 pretty right 🤷♂️
Probe Software lost the licence, luckily.
👍👏
I don't remember the reason, but I was kind of disappointed with this version. It was cheap and since MK2 was a game that I played a lot, I thought it would be a great acquisition for my Saturn. I wanted to learn all characters that I was not good with and beat the game with everyone that see all endings, but I only played a few times
The sega saturn in PS1 was 32bit power houses. It Should ben better back than.
I NOTICE THE GAME PAUSE SLIGHTLY DURING FATILITYS 🤔
Probe "whitened" Jade as they did on Genesis.😅
6:13
Fromt what I am seeing in this video it seems this version is a decent port, I do like it alittle better then the PS1 version but not alot.
The Saturn as more than capable of handling the arcade version of Mortal Kombat 2.
sega saturn controller was good 💯
Can’t wait for you to try mk for the amiga 😆
play Saturn umk3
@17:42 lol!
I’ve probably bought and played every mk2 except for saturn version. The visuals are arcade but that sound quality yikes! Totally unexpected cause games like x men COTA was so good on the Saturn but terrible on ps1.
New Version Of Mortal Kombat II for Sega Saturn same as Virtua Fighter 1993
