Beautiful Carole proud of my part native background ( Canadian) native Cree/ Mohawk
The First American Christmas Carol. St. John de Brebeuf (One of the 8 North American Martyrs). He worked for 22 years among the Huron Indians (primarily in the Quebec area) He adapted a French folk song and written a Christmas Carol in the Huron language. Some of the Hurons that escaped the Iroquois preserved the hymn and it continues today...
Canadian, not American.
my favourite choir, my favourite carol... julie from canada
Probably the most powerful arrangement of a carol ever performed.
I had never heard of this carol before. I just listened to a Dan Forrest arrangement of it then clicked on this arrangement. The twoo arrangements are quite different but both are beautiful! Thanks!
The native drumming added immeasurably to the rendition
I am Haudenosaunee and I can tell you what you were hearing was not Indigenous drumming. It was drumming similar to what you would have heard when colonial armies of the day marched.
Maybe I’ll head up to St Marie Amongst the Hurons over the Holidays and go to Martyr’s Shrine again havnt been since childhood
So beautiful.
Omg !!!! Thank-you for sharing this video I am getting goose bumps ❤ very very well done ....this song should be on the radio stations across North America!!! Around Christmas
Surely it has a well known French composer: The Huron Carol is Canada's oldest Christmas song, written around 1642-43
by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Huron Indians in Canada.
Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native Iroquoian language of the Huron/Wendat people. The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song, "Une Jeune Pucelle" (A Young Maid). (source: Wikipedia)
A beautiful recording, indeed! But as you note, sad that they did not attribute such a widely-known writer (St. John de Brébeuf), nor the translator to English, Jesse Edgar Middleton, whose lyrics they are singing.
But Jesse Edgar Middleton didn't translate it. Instead, he created new lyrics.
Yes it was written by the 17th-century Jesuit missionary St Jean de Brébeuf. The Huron Carol, the Christmas story is told using the imagery of the First Nations of Canada: the Christ-child is wrapped in rabbit skins; Chiefs bring gifts of Fox and Beaver-pelt (far more valuable in Canada than Gold, Frankincense, or Myrrh).
@@jamesfunk7614 Yes there is another set of lyrics by Bruce Cockburn of Iesus Ahatonnia (The Huron Carol) as follows:
Ehstehn yayau deh tsaun we yisus ahattonnia

Ehnau sherskwa trivota nonnwa 'ndi yaun rashata

[Translation: "Jesus, He is Born"]
Have courage, you who are human beings: Jesus, he is born
The okie spirit who enslaved us has fled
Don't listen to him for he corrupts the spirits of our thoughts
Jesus, he is born
The okie spirits who live in the sky are coming with a message
They're coming to say, "Rejoice!
Mary has given birth. Rejoice!"
Jesus, he is born
Three men of great authority have left for the place of his birth
Tiscient, the star appearing over the horizon leads them there
That star will walk first on the bath to guide them
Jesus, he is born
The star stopped not far from where Jesus was born
Having found the place it said,
"Come this way"
Jesus, he is born
As they entered and saw Jesus they praised his name
They oiled his scalp many times, anointing his head
With the oil of the sunflower
Jesus, he is born
They say, "Let us place his name in a position of honour
Let us act reverently towards him for he comes to show us mercy
It is the will of the spirits that you love us, Jesus,
And we wish that we may be adopted into your family
Jesus, he is born
@@Paulthepsych Heather Dale has a version where she sings 2 verses in Wendat, 2 in French, and 2 in English.

Magnifique....
Pure awesomeness!!!
Beautiful!
Fantastic.
Does it seem to anyone else that they put the ones that make the funniest faces up front?
LOVE!!!
Wikipedia got it wrong. "Une Jeune Pucelle" and Yesous ahatonnya have nothing to do with each other melodically. Listen to each and try to detect a similarity of more than two successive notes. There aren't any. As far as we know this is de Brébeuf's original composition.
@severian monk “Une Jeune Pucelle” I believe is St Joan of Arc
Everything I’ve read about her says that’s how the French referred to her. Joan was “La Pucelle”, the Maid. And Jeune fits too, since Joan was only 19 when she was martyred.

The only way I'm donating is by buying a Christmas CD
the bible says to donate 10% of all your earnings
Beautiful, but some of the choir look a bit....well, I wouldn't want to meet them on a dark night!
So 'mechanical'
How to « starwarize » something beautiful and make it unrecognizable. Despite the quality of the voices, it is as terrible as making plum pudding with avocado.
Outstanding!
