- Jose Carreras performs "Kyrie" from "Misa Criolla" by Ariel Ramírez. The Misa, a mass for tenor, chorus and orchestra, is based on folk genres such as chacarera, carnavalito and estilo pampeano, with Andean influences and instruments. It is also one of the first masses to be celebrated in a modern language. Ramírez wrote the piece in 1963-1964.

I was driving in the dark in freezing, snowy London when I first heard this. I had to pull over and stop. I cried a little bit. I was absolutely transfixed. Hypnotised.
Beside the lyrics, José Carreras' voice is really touching.

The Misa Criolla with Jose Carreras is for me the most beautiful one I ever heard. I do have the cd for more than 20 years and stll enjoy every note of it.

I know that life is not always easy. Though an agnostic, I know that many hymns
and parts of the mass speak of the human existence, not only in words, but also in music.
Who has never thought - in words or emotions - "Lord, have mercy on me!"?
I believe we need rites in our lives. The mass with its stages invites us to think
about time, aging, and death as well as illness, grief and misfortune.
Saying grace before meals (something I have only experienced for a short while
in another country) reminds us - whether we thank God or only reflect inwardly -
that food has not always and everywhere been a given.
The original was recorded in 1964 by Los Fronterizos, one of the greatest Argentinean folkloric groups, and that was with no doubts the best version of La Misa Criolla, because nobody like them has ever been able to capture the authentic popular spirit of this music, the true mining of the word “criolla”. Besides, of course, the fact that it was the result of the musical direction and harpsichord performance from Ariel Ramirez

I have got the honor and the luck to listen to it live, with maestro Carreras, chorus and the Andean players. It was an amazing evening, that I will remember forever. For me there is no other version of Misa Criolla that I can listen to, after that.

I fully agree with you and will never forget this amazing evening! Josep Carreras is one of the best tenors of our times. His beautiful voice and vocal expression are outstanding.

So sad but king of interesting too. Could you explain why this mass (misa) was prohibited in Hungary? I supouse it was because of the lack of religious liberty, but that prohibition was with this specific mass or with any kind of mass? or any kind of sacred music? Thanks for your comments!

It was wrote in Argentina for spanish speakers, after the text of written in castellano (spanish), after Catholic Church change celebrating mass in latin to celebrate it in the language of the place where celebrated. I dont understand where is the "forbidden" part.

I love Carrera, but the version of Mercedes Sosa is better for me.
Maybe because to the being Argentine as Ariel Ramirez, the creator of the piece of art, she understands it otherwise, and as Latin Americans could transmit together more, because the Misa Criolla already is a Heritage of the Humanity.
Have you heard the version with Patricia Sosa singing? I have never heard such a beautiful female voice, I wonder if she is related to Mercedes.
Surely - his voice is simply unbelievable beautiful.
But normally the Misa Criolla is conceptioned for two solo voices not only for one.
And after all the tempo is, for my feeling/opinion, too slowly.
I don´t know why people think that music become more intensity,
espacially if a star like Carreras is involved, when they make such a strong Ritandando.
