Is there anything Rhiannon cant sing? Death metal maybe? I've heard every song she's ever released, every collaboration. Here's what makes her among the greats - she never, ever shows off. No pointless gymnastic melisma. She inhabits the song fully and tells the story as it should be sung. She's really a devoted musicologist who can sing as well as anyone on the planet & play a variety of instruments at the highest level. My respect for her is boundless.
Considering she went to Oberlin and studied opera there it makes sense that she knows her stuff! But to your point, I’m now adding her to my list of favorites along with Audra McDonald whose voice is exquisite! You know what would be amazing is to have Audra McDonald and Rhiannon sing while Misty Copeland dances!!! That would be epic!!!!!
I have been listening to her since the Chocolate Drops. For the past three years, she is a part of every day. Often when she begins to sing, I begin to weep. I'm not sad. It doesn't have to do with the words. It seems to be an involuntary response on the sensory level to the actual tones she produces. Whatever it is, I am grateful every day for her gifts.
Oh-my-god I have that reaction at times too! Recently I had the same reaction from a young singer named Laura Bretan (sp) but not from the moment she starts singing it happens when she uses the upper register of her voice, it’s sooooo beautiful but it also makes me cry. I have mixed feelings about listening to her because on the one hand her voice is so unbelievable but on the other hand I don’t want to start crying. But I know exactly what you mean! Ya know when something is beautiful it touches the core of my soul!
The beautiful tone of Rhiannon's voice weaves it's magic here together with Francesco in this subtle yet powerful performance. So easy to love music when your ears are treated to delights like this.
I AM overwhelmed with this stunning performance - Rhiannon this is simply sublime - you took my breath away and opened my heart even further - what a journey 🪽
I wouldn’t believe something like that might be possible if someone just told me. A country singer (sorry for that sheer simplification, may you kindly excuse me as I am from central Europe) accompanied on banjo not only could sing a renaissance Italian song but to keep its soul and nature untouched and moreover to express it so deeply and truly! This is only to be admired, profoundly admired. Thanks for your music madam.
Yup, classically trained and an ex opera singer. One thing you need to realize is that the music she is into isn't just country. It comes from a history of Black American music where having a wide range in one's voice is a norm. With all due respect, but many singers in this tradition could easily hold their own against the finest European singers. Oh and BTW, She also can belt out a mean Jazz tune, so if this surprises you about her, you ain't see nothin' yet! 😂😅😂😅
@@raymondabella4684 meanwhile, I naturally learnt everything about her and her music becoming a real fan of hers. To call American folk music in general just country is, of course, just a horrible simplification as perceived from Europe. At first I just accidentally came across her, knowing nothing. Funny thing is, I heard one of her songs here in the Czech Republic in the national radio broadcast. So the name was the only thing I caught.
Rhiannon, you just continue to astonish, while the message is that no one should be astonished. Of course you can do all these things because you’re a consummate artist and sensitive and courageous historian. No one should be astonished, apart from the sheer beauty and power of the performances themselves. Except for where we are in our reckoning with history as a nation in the US, and global society. Three months ago it was published only the audio! It's a nice video. Rhiannon remembers the words and pronounces the difficult archaic Italian language very well✨😀✨
Heavenly singing from Rhiannon who I've loved since her days w/ Carolina Chocolate Drops since she inspires me as a musician and this masterclass performance shows why.
One of the best interpretations i've ever heard in regards to this old piece of baroque music. Rhiannons gorgeous vocals puts an earthy, folky twist to this aria establishing a common ground while capturing the nuance. Turrisis' intricate playing is an absolute delight in this revamped version. I think what makes this piece so compelling is the simplicity and artistry put into it. Precious. Thank you both for sharing. Bravo.
