    Recently purchased the Sega Homestar Original as a tool for relaxation and potential sleep aid while listening to whatever I can find here in RUclips. The projection on the ceiling is very clear and detailed, especially thanks to the focus-adjustment ring on the top so you can tinker with the image until even the smallest details are visible. This thing is QUIET, very little noise, none if you are wearing headphones. In a very dark room, it will create a faint glow around everything, but not enough to keep you awake (Also less chance of bumping into something when you need to get up). Definitely use the 60 minute timer function because, more often than not, I tend to nod off to sleep before getting that far and its comforting to know it won't be running longer than it needs to. I don't know how it compares to the "Flux" but I believe $160 was a better value for what I was getting as opposed to about $250, especially on a product I'd never tried before. Very happy with the Original, and I don't really want anything brighter so probably won't invest in the Flux.

    I'm sorry but the fact that there is more stars crowding the view doesn't mean it's better. The original looks more realistic as would be visible to the naked eye. The flux makes it look like a grid of stars crowding the circle, much harder to imagine they are actually stars. Not to mention, you don't watch stars in a lit room, so comparing them in a lit space is absurd.

    Very very useful. Great presentation. Thank you. Will buy the flux. Maybe the heating up of original unit is due to the electric plug vs. the USB cable that perhaps prevents heating up the electric box connected to wall which then connects to unit. I never thought about that before but that seems to be a technological built in wiring of all USB connecting devices, the phones and lamps and fans that you can connect with USB these days don't get warmed. Perhaps that's a great advantage to USB designed devices and appliances. Lol.. oooh maybe I'm smarter than I thought on this Sunday morning after holidays. I'm not a techy girl. At all. But a musician who is always plugging things in. I'm so not technical that I bought the planetarium discs online and then when they arrived I realized I had no way to play these discs and directions said it's for use on Sega homestar. Flux, etc. So now I need to get that ... but need the stars on my ceiling, so must expand my "stuff" collection. Excited to get the flux now and keep it permanently set in a great corner of our home for starry nights. Nice box for a shelf too, the flux.

      I have a ds1 for my older son and an Uncle Milton Star theater pro for my second son. Don’t purchase the ds1. The clarity is not worth the crazy price tag, imo. The stars still blur around the edges and within a few months I had to ship it back to have them fix a grinding sound with the rotation. I had to pay $42 to ship it and now it’s been a few months and it’s again making that awful sound. Also, they put the power cord jack on the front of it so the cord gets bent, I had to replace it. I just purchased an Uncle Milton Star theater pro for my third son. If I upgrade them, I’ll probably get the flux. The only thing the ds1 has over the Uncle Milton is a shooting star.

    • @tysontuki1410
      @tysontuki1410 2 года назад

      Distance and focus. The further the projector is from the surface its projecting to the more spread out the stars are, the softer the light and sharpness. The closer it is, the sharper the image, density and brightness. Dial the adjustment ring to focus on the centre of the image. Completely dark rooms project better light which means better image quality, ceiling colour also plays a part, supposedly favouring lighter toned surfaces.
      I haven't seen the flux projected onto a black surface nor do I have one.
      Camera tricks! Cameras and videos used on night mode will pick up alot more light than what your eye will see and actually make the light pop alot more on video and camera than what you actually see. I experimented with this and it looked 10x better than what I was actually looking at. Showed the image to my friends and they went out and ordered a flux before I could even explain...

    Hello, thanks for your review here. Very useful information. But I am wondering if you have any idea about the homestar lite product. It surely has a more affordable price. I wonder what's the difference between the original one. Thanks.

      As far as I'm aware they only make one type of disc for use across the entire range.

    Is it possible to change the brightness settings on the flux?
    The real stars aren't so bright.
    The original is more realistic.

    Hello, I have seen other models in which you can choose the projection date, in this one it is not possible. I would like to know how you do it to know it, and some tips to know how you do the set-up to observe constellations.
    Thank you!

    • @markjdraper
      @markjdraper  2 года назад

      These models project discs, they don't allow you to set a date or time. To view constellations you put the projection disc that includes constellations into the projector.

    Does the flux have adjustable lighting? I dont want something too bright, thank you for the review too :)

      No, but it also doesn't leak much light either, see this comparison video I did recently: ruclips.net/video/MgsQXP8M66M/видео.html

    Have you seen the very inexpensive Flux copies out there? They sell for under $30 with two disks and was wondering how they compare to the original.

    Thanks for the review, I will probably order the flux,i did have the original a year ago but sent it back due to its lack of brightness and focus at the edges. For people who think the flux has to many stars, when you can see the night sky from somewhere like the Mojave desert you wouldn't say that.....Its unbelievable how many stars you can see with the naked eye...

    • @673497
      @673497 4 года назад

      Yep. That's the same view I had in countryside... The amount of stars just like in the Flux...

    The older model looked more like the night sky we see with the naked eye. The Flux may be nice and bright but way too many stars to be realistic - is this because of updated discs perhaps? I would prefer a brighter ( 5Watt ) model of the older one. Before I buy, I'm wondering if anyone can also tell me what power Wattage the older model is, and maybe if it is upgradable??

    I own both
    The home star is not as bright, kind of looks like watching galaxy in the wild, with city light
    The new flux is much more better
    Feels so close to it
    Brighter, much brighter than before
    of course also can run by USB
    Can travel with you if you want

    Are there any projector s with a recorded planetarium narration?

    • @markjdraper

      Could be, but I've not come across any. Perhaps a better bet is planetarium software and run it through a projector.

    Now I'm in contradiction. I like the realistic look on the original but i don't quite like the blurriness and that shutting star looks weird. On the other hand, i like the clarity of the flux. But again, there are to manny stars.. And I'm not sure were to get the discs from. Any recommendations, Mark Draper?
    Also, thank you for the review!

    I want one of these for my home theater. Higher quality is generally better yet I’m worried that the flux will light up my room too much while viewing films. Would the flux disrupt or enhance your film viewing experience? Which would you buy in my case?

      Check out ruclips.net/video/MgsQXP8M66M/видео.html to see the light leakage, both Sega units are very good at keeping the room dark.

    Thanks for the video man. I was looking for one on the internet, the flux seem much clearer, but the density of the the stars feels too much. The density in the original seems more realistic. Noticed in the video there is to much noise in the colors of the original, is it from the camera? The original costs around 100$ which is quite comfortable price for the pocket. And the flux costs around 300$, a little bit expensive. I wanna buy one of these, but I don't want to spend money on the original and not being satisfied. Should I buy the original? Or should I save a little bit more money for the flux? Is there any other planetarium projectors?

    The flux might look more packed making it more unrealistic but i feel they should have views for northern and southern hemispheres as separate discs.

    Hey Mark, could I use a smart plug to run the Flux with Alexa? If the power of the Flux is left on and the same plug shuts off, when the smart plug gets turned back on again, does the Flux automatically come back on?

      I think it would come on, but I don't think it would rotate as you have to press a button to turn that feature on.

    i want one that looks more realistic. I believe the flux might be the one. This is for my son's room so we can both look and talk about the stars at night before his bed time. Does anyone recommend a specific one? I wish a shooting star would shoot across the sky every now and then, that would be great!!
