I did a lot of research on the internet between the Flux and the DS-1. As most people have probably figured out, I know that the DS-1 is clearly superior, but the question is whether it justifies the extra money for it. I spent a bit of time communicating back and forth with Chris Miller, the owner and creator of DS-1, and he really impressed me as someone knowledgeable and a no-BS kind of guy. I eventually went with the DS-1, as I really wanted something that can last me for a long time. Together with the projector, I also bought the chrome disc, as well as 5 other star discs. Very happy with my choice. The projector is of a very high quality, and the images it cast on my room's ceiling are amazing. I never get to test out the Flux, so I can't give a honest comparison. But I'm a very happy customer of the DS-1, and if you have a somewhat decent interest in astronomy, I would definitely recommend the DS-1
Would you recommend getting one of these projectors if my ceiling isn't smooth? I have a popcorn, uneven type of finish. That's just the way my apartment did my ceiling to hide imperfections.

It looks good. The only issue I see is the AC adapter plug location. In some cases you will end up having the cord hanging off the front. They should have put it on the same side as the controls since you are unlikely to face the controls forward. With how nice the night light looks I imagine you would want the controls facing away from you until you are going to project. It would also be nice to set the brightness for the control buttons so they are off or very dim. Maybe they should dim when the night light dims.
Thank you for your review! The chrome discs look awesome and I think these are the main reason to buy this planetarium. I would love to see that in real.

I love your reviews! I have a silly question. What I was looking for is a projector that will show a realistic image of how the night sky is supposed to look with the naked eye. I have read that one can see between 4,000 and 10,000 stars even under best conditions. My question is, the products you review display many more stars, from 60,000 to 4 million. Does it mean they are really not showing a realistic view of the sky seen with the naked eye and are somehow magnifiying the night sky? Thank you
They are showing you an accurate representation of the sky. It will show you more than you would see in real life with your eyes. The photos of the night sky people take that look really impressive have very long exposures to bring in more light.

It's a novelty product, so you are going to pay a little more. If you can't afford it, than go with the flux but don't bash the price.
Hi Mark thanks for creating this type of content :) my question is : according to what you were able to see during your testing, does the DS1 allow to stop the rotation at a certain point? (for example if i use a disc with 5/6 galaxies and I want it to stop it when the rotation arrives to the galaxy which i like the most? Thanks in advance
@@IUJacob No... The entire disc is not projected, just like on a planisphere. So Orion, for example, dips below the edge, and later rises again. So I can view, stop rotation to study or search, then press button to restart rotation. Is that clearer? Thanks.
Since you mention the darkness problem... If I leave it on while watching Netflix in a big screen... will the light be too much? How would that compare to a Flux? I'm looking for something I can also use with friends over and not only in my bedroom.
i wish these education devices were affordable. I mean every child should have one to study every night. I dont know a single person who can afford one of these.
Thanks for the great review, Mark! You've inspired me to get the DS-1. The music you're playing in th background really adds a lot to the experience. Could you tell me the name so I can try and track down a copy? Thanks!
The power adaptor for this has stopped working for me. Miller Engineering replaced the adaptor for me once already, but it has stopped working again. Does anyone know how I can get a repkCement
Finally 🙌 I already bought flux. Could have bought this one... But fine, Fulx is indeed very good.He will use Miller's engineering disc for DS1 and Sega disc for flux, obviously Miller's engineering disc have more stars. Just difference is 5 watt and 10 watt😑 There are Miller's discs engineered for flux as well, that they will never review. Now it's time to compare the master legend Homestar extra 3000 $ vs Master class DS1 500$.
Two questions: Does anyone know why the nightlight feature was discontinued? Also, is there a customer service phone number? I never received a response to my email. Thank you in advance!
Great review and I TY for it. I have 1 question and TY in advance for your response back. The music playing in the backround...was that within the projector or your own music on a separate speaker? If your own, what is the song title? It was so relaxing. Again thanks for the thorough and well explained review. 👍🏽
Hello, thanks for the lovely feedback. I added the track while editing the video, the DS1 doesn't play music. I take a lot of time trying to find the perfect track for a video like this, so I'm glad you agree it fit. The track is called A Quiet Thought by Wayne Jones and is available to download for FREE from the RUclips audio library. Go to: ruclips.net/user/audiolibrarymusic and type the track name into the search box and it will pop up for you to download.
Hey Thanks Mark! Yes, you do an amazing job and you can see you spend hours perfecting your reviews. I sincerely thank you for them and that song is just an amazing add to the vid review. Totally fits. Awesome pick by you and thanks for letting me know the song. I'm definitely going to play it for my daughter after I finally choose one of these projectors I just can't seem to find the perfect 1. I'm looking for one with a speaker in it that slowly rotates the scene around and also lets you change colors if you want. Also want it to have all the different slides so you can change up the scenery for different effects but also has random lighting flashes you can add in. This combined with the speaker would allow you to softly hear the thunder rumbles along with the lightning flashes. I know that's a ton of features, but so what? Lol I bet if someone had all those features in a quality made machine for $150 bucks or so, they'd fly off the shelves. 😊
Yes that does sound like a great product...I don't think it exists at the moment. I have seen them with speakers built in but they're not very good quality. If you want a range of discs I would check out the Flulx (comparison vid if you've not seen it: ruclips.net/video/0RPzMIXlGk8/видео.html) as that's closer to your budget. Get a separate portable speaker (e.g. this one ruclips.net/video/ex0Ctf_IfuU/видео.html or this one ruclips.net/video/9abZQTdc804/видео.html) as that has the benefit of giving you decent sound quality plus you can take it with you when you travel.
@@markjdraper I saw your review of the old flux / new updated flux review. The new one is very nice. I'll watch the vids you attached now and let the ads play so you get paid. I did so with this review already. 😉 Have a great day and TY again. 😊
@@markjdraper Wow! Lol I actually have the exact Tribet speaker you reviewed. It's an awesome speaker that I got for $20 and has amazing bass for its size. I'd give that a full 5 stars myself.
Woah. The nightlight alone looks spectacular. Now I know what David Bowman meant when he said "My God, it's full of stars" in Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: A Space Odyssey". I wouldn't be surprised if it was inspired by this. Did anyone order it from Germany? Looks like they're not shipping internationally, at least not in the official store :-(
I love this but wonder if a cheap nano or micro projector playing a night sky video can achieve a similar effect? My son wants a planetarium for Christmas and I'm prepared to pay for something like this so I can enjoy it too :-) You mentioned Elite Dangerous. He has an xbox in his bedroom but I dont want screens on. Would love a space journey projected as clear as this
Hy. I want to buy a Home Planetarium but I do not know which is the best, with a good quality and to include as much of the surface of the rooms. What product do you recommend? Thank you!
Hi! I saw that your purchased the ds1 planetarium. I'm probably gonna get one myself. However I have an ear condition and I really don't do well with fan noises. Was wondering if this device makes any noticeable noise at all? Thank you so much. Regards.
I'm so jealous of the people who already ordered. Having this on while on my death bed is a wish of mine. I've been obsessed with stuff like this since I visited my first planetarium as a kid. The main feature I want is the shooting stars but the cheap ones don't have that option. I have a progressive lung disease and when my time comes I can't think of a easier way to go then to be gazing at the stars with my kitty by my side. Wish it wasn't so expensive. I'd save up for it but I don't have enough time. I bought a cheap one on Amazon and it's joke. Very poorly made. Stuff like this you really get what you pay for.
Hi there this is what I've been after for a while now I've seen cheaper ones on eBay and Amazon through they've all got mixed reviews..this looks like it would fit the bill..Where can I buy this in the UK? Thanks....
@@markjdraper hi mark thanks.....yeah seen one amazon lastnight tried to purchase it through it was us and didn't ship to UK....I contacted him to see if he would and why he wouldn't he said it would be to expensive witch is disappointing so my search continues..was almost considering them other options through they have got so bad reviews on amazon just put me off..so I guess I'll just have to wait and see if the ds1 will ship to UK further down the line or wait for something else..
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there is any way to purchase this outside of the US right now... I was looking to try and purchase a Chrome DS1 for me here in the UK, but it's simply impossible to purchase one other than directly from Miller, and they will only ship to US addresses...they say it's because of any potential warranty issues, so I can't see them selling in the UK/EU until they get themselves a UK/EU distributor...and they way things are right now, I imagine that is some way off... Shame...:(
Definitely the DS-1, if you think it looks good in the video just wait until you see those stars in person!! I am very happy I decided on this one. If you want a long lasting premium quality home planetarium go with the DS-1
After watching this review I really like this planetarium. Would definitely consider getting on in the future . For now think I will get a homestar flux or original as its way cheaper . I really appreciate quality and this really is high quality. Think I can get use to laying in bed with this high quality planetarium . I also believe in buying a quality telescope as I own a 1000mm focal length by 90mm aperture Meade refractor with multi coated eye pieces . I also have a 1950mm by 205mm cassigrain. Really enjoyed this video
Dear Mark, thank you very much for this review, the DS1 is amazing! But, what about a comparison with the DS1 or the Flux and the Uncle Milton Star Theater Pro? Many people prefer this last also respect the flux. There is also a russian version with 5W led like the Sega Flux, I was told that has better lenses than the Sega. I really don't know why UM doesn't mention about their 5W version for Russian Federation. Thank you for all!

Hi Lisa, I don't work for the company so I'm unsure what they plan to do about worldwide orders. Last time I heard from them they had planned to ship outside America early 2020, but given the crazy year we've had I suspect they may have held off from that until things settle down. I'd have suggested contacting them directly but as you've already done that the only thing I can suggest it wait and see if they get back to you, or ping me a message (@markjdraper on Twitter/Insta) and I will let you know if I hear anything from them.
Can anyone help me out. This is basically a 3D projected planisphere. It is amazing, quality excellent and I have NO regrets on the purchase. So the disc rotates with Polaris off-center, just like with a planisphere. So Orion passes off screen and then reappears later. What is unclear to me is which cycle does a full rotation represent - a 24 day or a 365 day year? I am wrapping my head around this and can not come to an answer. Thanks for any thoughts. @@IUJacob No... The entire disc is not projected, just like on a planisphere. So Orion, for example, dips below the edge, and later rises again. So I can view, stop rotation to study or search, then press button to restart rotation. Is that clearer? Thanks.
@@mitchbryant8166 I’m literally looking up at one of the discs right now and the whole thing is projected on the ceiling.
Thanks for the good video. That's exactly what I was looking for.
Since you mention the darkness problem... If I leave it on while watching Netflix in a big screen... will the light be too much? How would that compare to a Flux? I'm looking for something I can also use with friends over and not only in my bedroom.
I'm curious with these projectors - if you have a ceiling fan or light fixture in the room, would it completely mess up the illusion?
I have the same question, also wondering if popcorn ceilings or any textured ceiling effect the illusion too.
i wish these education devices were affordable. I mean every child should have one to study every night. I dont know a single person who can afford one of these.
Saved up my money. Anyone can afford one if they really want one
Thanks for the great review, Mark! You've inspired me to get the DS-1. The music you're playing in th background really adds a lot to the experience. Could you tell me the name so I can try and track down a copy? Thanks!
The music track used is A Quiet Thought by Wayne Jones and it's available for free from the RUclips Audio Library.
@@markjdraper Thanks!
the website doesn't have an option to choose to ship to UK, could you please advise, I've contacted the company, hopefully I can purchase one soon.
definitely getting this for myself!
Digistar 5 at the Adler. Several hundred thousand dollars but it will fly you around the galaxy.
Is the homestar extra really $3000?

I wonder, too. Between the beauty of the stars and the poignancy of the music, I was practically in tears....
Wow I'm crying.. this is so beautiful 😪
Thank you, so nice to hear you enjoyed it so much ☺
@@markjdraper it's amazing!!!😨
I would love to own one....is there still no way to buy it from Europe?
would it be an issue if there is a ceiling fan In the middle of a room?
Two questions: Does anyone know why the nightlight feature was discontinued? Also, is there a customer service phone number? I never received a response to my email. Thank you in advance!
Absolutely stunning
Have a great day and TY again.
Looks like they're not shipping internationally, at least not in the official store :-(
Any idea when they be able to be shipped to Canada🤟? Love your content!
I love this but wonder if a cheap nano or micro projector playing a night sky video can achieve a similar effect? My son wants a planetarium for Christmas and I'm prepared to pay for something like this so I can enjoy it too :-)
You mentioned Elite Dangerous. He has an xbox in his bedroom but I dont want screens on. Would love a space journey projected as clear as this
Check out ruclips.net/video/wTcuOtCk22w/видео.html as that might be something to consider, but instead of a laptop you'd plug in the xbox.
Hy.
I want to buy a Home Planetarium but I do not know which is the best, with a good quality and to include as much of the surface of the rooms. What product do you recommend? Thank you!
Have you tried the new Dark Skys "Pocket Planetarium" that just came out for $34.99 on their site? Just curious to see if it's worth it.
Am trying it at the moment, video out soon!

@@markjdraper Thank you!! Love all your reviews!
Which one is worth buying this or the Sega Toys Homestar Flux (Satin Black) Home Planetarium Star Projector since it’s way cheaper???
Hi! I saw that your purchased the ds1 planetarium. I'm probably gonna get one myself. However I have an ear condition and I really don't do well with fan noises.
Was wondering if this device makes any noticeable noise at all? Thank you so much. Regards.
Insane noise
Cricket sounds would be a great feature
I may have to get one of these
I'm so jealous of the people who already ordered.
They've released a lower cost model you might be interested in: ruclips.net/video/p6zIl4Z949E/видео.html
I just ordered. I can't wait!!!
How is it?
its almost perfect other than the wheezing fan sound everytime you turn it on, i wish they make a new one without it
For the disc, does it matter which side face up?
Yes. Read the directions. They are very clear.
is the chrome disc the one with 4.1 million? and standard is with 1.4?
Ordered mine yesterday thanks !!!
I am searching for it, can`t buy it anywhere, so sad... any idea?
Do they ship internationally? Cuz in the website it doesn’t show other than Unitedstate !!!
Hi there this is what I've been after for a while now I've seen cheaper ones on eBay and Amazon through they've all got mixed reviews..this looks like it would fit the bill..Where can I buy this in the UK? Thanks....
As far as I'm aware you can't buy this in the UK, it can only be purchased directly from the manufacturer.
Shame...:(
For $600 it had better be fantastic.
Very helpful. Thank you!
Can you run this one as long as you want, rather than having it auto shut off after an hour or whatever? Does it save the last settings used?
auto shuts off after 2 hours. Safety feature
Is it also wireless or do it always have to be plugged up
Must be plugged in
What if you have like a fan on your ceiling...?
step 1: remove the fan
Step 2: rethink decision
Your fan will have out of focus stars projected on it. What do you think would happen?!?
Would you recommend the Flux or the DS-1
Both are good, just for more stars brightness go to DS1.
Definitely the DS-1, if you think it looks good in the video just wait until you see those stars in person!! I am very happy I decided on this one. If you want a long lasting premium quality home planetarium go with the DS-1
@@chm000001 Homestar extra, which seriously needed to be think about
@@chm000001 Guys confirmed with Miller's, that only drawback with DS1 is maximum projection distance is just 20 inches, fk it, flux is 3 meters
Not true, the minimum distance is 20”
how high is your ceiling? thanks.
You can project up to 20 feet. Mine are 8 feet.
I have a black ceiling would this be a problem absorbing the light?
I've not tried it on a black ceiling, but others have commented that it does make a difference and doesn't look as good as on a light ceiling.
How do u get them not look blurry on the first Sega Projector
After watching this review I really like this planetarium. Would definitely consider getting on in the future . For now think I will get a homestar flux or original as its way cheaper . I really appreciate quality and this really is high quality. Think I can get use to laying in bed with this high quality planetarium . I also believe in buying a quality telescope as I own a 1000mm focal length by 90mm aperture Meade refractor with multi coated eye pieces . I also have a 1950mm by 205mm cassigrain. Really enjoyed this video
Glad you enjoyed it. Agree with your decision, save the cash and get the Sega, perhaps with some extra discs using the money saved.
Do I need a white ceiling fpr this?
It’s turned on at 5:46
Dear Mark, thank you very much for this review, the DS1 is amazing!

Hi mark. Is there any way I can get this delivered to Australia ? I have tried contacting the company with no response. Thanks a lot
Does this work with 220V out of the box?
yes
I have one homestar extra how does it compare to the ds1?
The ds1 will project at least 10x more stars with a star disk, and 34x more with a chrome disk, compared to a homestar extra.
OMG I NEED THIS
Gracias!!
where can i buy it. i try over several websites. i am in germany located. thanks alex
At the moment I'm being told its impossible to get.
Hi! I saw you had the ds1 . Was thinking of buying it. However I have a hearing condition and I usually get pretty bad pain with fan noise. Is the fan noise audible at all? If so, how loud is it? Thank you.
Hi William ... Have used it nightly for two weeks and forgot the fan until your question. I live alone in silent rural Vermont, and I have NEVER heard it. I have no association with Miller, I am just a seriously trained astronomer. I love mine. I think you will too. Enjoy the night sky.
