The original and NATG ones just look like you’re looking up at the night sky. The flux makes you feel like you’re literally in space looking at different galaxies and stars

I have had the Flux for a year now and with the selection of disks you can buy it wins hands down for realism, i particularly like the overlay disk that can be added to the sky disks and shows all the trees round the edges, it really gives a sense of being in a forest clearing at night. PS the "taiga" forest disc can be found at Astrial discs.

Thank you Mark for posting this comparison. Part of my job is tuning star fields at a planetarium. I have a Homestar original at home for family use. Your review intrigues me. You've compared how each looks out of the box but it's difficult to get that across through video. I'm wondering if however, you can compare Apples to Apples getting down to the engineering of the projector themselves. For example, 1) use the same star disc in both the Flux and Homestar. Then we can rule out star fields as a variable. More and Bright discs like the Flux disc are breathtaking but not very realistic and crazy hard to find constellations with. 2) Judge brightness from the same star disc. Does the Flux actually have more lumens or is it just having more (and larger) stars on it's plate? (i.e. brighter) 3) Perhaps the MOST important, is optics and focus quality. I've seen in your video (as at my house) that focus of the Homestar is relegated to a relatively small portion of the viewable area. The stars on the periphery have smears or can't be focused. It would be really neat to set up your tests with same disc, room position and get it be focused best with no rotation. Then zoom camera in on same constellations both near zenith and edges to see if indeed optics are actually better. DOES the Flux have better sky wide focus? Jacob I only have the Flux. It is not as bright as you think. The only clear part is about a foot radius from the center while the rest is blurry. The most blurry, which is appalling, is this the other end of the large gathered stars. If you hold it in your hand to a wall about 2 feet away it is clear excluding that one area that remains blurry. The focus ring also moves on its own. I like the original, but the flux would be good if it wasn't more expensive. Not sure the extra brightness is worth the extra cost. I like the mat finish. The oval for the NG is a deal breaker.
Why don't you show the same view for all 3 units? When you do the side-by-side comparison at 4:45, you've used a bland starfield the Nat Geo and Sega Original, while the Flux has a galaxy. That's kind of weighted, don't you think? Using a more impressive image for the unit you prefer seems to show a little bias, no? Aside from that, why does the Flux's image at 4:45 show far less stars opposite the galaxy than the image at 4:08? The difference is drastic!
Was trying to find out if the sega disappearing content disc or any of the discs could work in the national geographic projector and you answered it for me so thankyou!
After watching this, I just bought a used origional. The flux looks like regular white noise. I won't want to project essentially an old CRT TV onto my ceiling.
Have you reviewed or looked at the Dark Sky DS-1? It seems like a much better product than any of these, but I would love to see a side by side video comparison of the projections between it and the flux or if there is another one closer in the league with the Dark Sky DS-1.
the flux is not so bright, the cameras are more sensible to light than human eyes, in the video will be brigther than you will be seen in the real life
Hey Mark! I was wondering if you can tell me if the original Sega or the flux makes any noise or loud noises. I'm a light sleeper and I would like to have one in my bedroom but in years past other types have been very noisy and just didn't work for me. Thanks so much for your help!💕
They're both great devices, assuming budget is no problem (and that you can get hold of both) it really comes down to which design you prefer and the features on offer. I'd say most people will be very happy with the Flux.
I like the look of these as I have visited the Planetarium in London and it was fantastic experience. Looking at the videos it suggests that the only colours are black and white. Is this the case ? As I would love to see something similar to the multi colours of the cloud Nebula which you see on posters.
Thanks a lot for this video, you saved me from spending money on a home planetarium :) My answer... None of them seem worth paying more than 15 Euros...
Like the flux but I find it a bit overwhelming, personally I like the original but both are beautiful in their own ways☺️ Btw, whatever you get (wether original or flux) you won't be disappointed.
Great review. I've done some extensive research and my preference is the original it appears to display a more realistic UK night sky without the condensed busyness. My problem is i cannot find the original for £70 as you displayed. Any links or advice would be very appreciated. Many thanks.
justin ranger I purchased it here in America on Amazon.I’m not sure if this 70 pounds was referenced in the video? I guess that would make it about 92 American dollars? I paid more than that, but US$119 and I’d say it’s quite worth it.
Mark, what is your favorite under $300 so far? I really want the dark sky's chrome but a bit high for a night light. I'm looking for clarity and accuracy.
Hi Mark!! Thankyou so much for this video :) I just have a quick question - is it the included disc’s make the brightness level different? Or will all the extra discs look brighter also in the flux? We are looking at getting this for our 3 month old as we currently use Christmas laser lights on the ceiling before bed each night, and would love to know if it’s possible to have both the bright and not so bright option on the flux but simply buying the original disc that came with the original version ☺️ Thankyou!
Hi Caroline, first of all congratulations on the new addition to your family! The flux doesn't have any brightness adjustment options and the couple of discs I've tried have all been about the same brightness. If you've not seen it, check out this video where I compare a load of projectors, see if any look like what you're after ruclips.net/video/MgsQXP8M66M/видео.html
Depends what you mean by bright, when you watch the other video you'll see these actually don't give off a lot of light filling the room, but lower cost ones do. But I'll be quiet now, don't want to wake baby! 😴 🤫
@@markjdraper Thankyou so much!! I just watched it 😃 I think I actually like the original better as it didn’t have as definite edge as the flux but it wasn’t as evident in this video above. The Flux is a brighter projector so that is probably causing it to look sharper. I've not tried many of the other discs, they're on my to-do list as I'm sure people would like to see examples of them, once it gets to winter and is dark again I may do a video on them but by that point I'm sure you'll be the expert on which ones are best! Coincidentally the reason I even have the Sega Original was I thought it would be a nice thing for my niece, but turned out she was more interested in thing she could grab hold of, so I was given it back, good job as well considering all the subsequent videos I've done with it.
@@markjdraper haha 😂 well - it’s very lucky for us your niece wasn’t as much into it 🙌🏻 I think we will go for the flux after seeing how much more hi def it looks as you described in another one of your videos with just original vs flux I found ☺️ it’ll be better for the discs I am guessing if it’s brighter ☺️ thanks for all your help and videos Mark they really helped me make a more informed choice 🙌🏻
Is it normal that the picture at the side is out of focus? (Flux) That's a problem that I have. In the middle the stars are clear and at the sides not.
Hi I'm thinking of getting a Homestar Flux for other half for Xmas, but we have an artex ceiling (with the little dimples) - does anyone know if this will ruin the effect? We don't have a completely smooth/flat ceiling in the house and it will be a lot of money if it doesn't work :) Maybe because it's a high quality projection it won't be an issue, but if anyone has experience of projecting onto a non-smooth ceiling I'd love to hear your comments, thanks!
Jessica Neumann I know this doesn’t directly solve your issue, but you can project them on the wall as well. That’s what I would do just because I don’t go to sleep looking straight up
Bravo!!! Only reason I bought the Flux was due to your review. But after this video, i think going with the original or flux doesn't hurt at all. I might actually buy the original too.
I bought the flux for my wife we were both very underwhelmed! We also bought the aurora borealis disk which looks like Picasso has thrown his spare paint on the ceiling complete waste of £170+ we have used this twice and it's back in its box!
The room has to be completely dark...only the flux should be the light in the room. It is underwhelming if there is any other light on in the room...especially during the day and you have light entering through the shades. This is the best during the night. I would play the cosmic meditation album...it is awesome!
I bought the original less than a month ago and it stopped rotating. It also gets warm. I'm sending it back. Does the flux have the same issues or did they correct it?
You mentioned you can buy different discs for the original and flux ... so can you ínstert the disc with a lot of starts on the original or it’s only the for the flux and vice versa ...?
As far as I know the Flux remains the newest model. I checked in with the team last year and they indicated they didn't have any plans to make a new one,, the consider the Flux to be spot on.
Hello. I see you are familliar with those planetariums. Can you tell me please what is the difference between HOME STAR PRO V2 and HOME STAR original/flux i can't find any info in the net ...
Hello, I'm not familiar with the Pro V2, but it sounds like it's part of the Homestar familiar of products. The Flux is the newer version of the original, it has a brighter bulb and is powered by USB but takes the same discs as the original.
Thanks for the fast respod. It is very strange that there is no any info for that V1 and V2 modifications. It is very expencive but i can't understand why... Is there smething more then original and flux...
the sega homestar original looks like your in a more light polluted area same with the astro but I like the flux cause it looks like your in a area without much light pollution
I am a little late to this video, so hopefully someone can see this comment. Will any of these project well on textures ceilings? In addition to my textured ceilings, my room is only 7ft tall. I want to get a clear projector because I love looking at (real) stars more than anything, and I just want to be sure I am finding the best match. Thanks to anyone who can give some input! Edit: Would a projector be a better option for me? I saw his video on the projector being used to recreate planetarium projections, but I still worry about the texture and height of my ceilings.
I noticed the more uneven the ceiling is, you would notice the stars appear to be moving quickly in a different direction...feel like they are alive. Especially on a popcorn ceiling
The Orginal is miles better, kooks more natural and milkyway looks better, the flux us unnatural and milkyway can see all the stars as individual stars, not looking natural at all. Was looking at the flux, but all the videos don't look right, so ended up with the standard, looks miles better, even my astronomy friends think so.
Yup FLUX wins hands down. So good I ordered a second one from Firebox only £150 each. Who cares about the price. Flux is the best. The flux just looks natural.
Rather than redirect to amazon where the description of the products is pretty poor (and you can be missguided between regular and flux version pretty fast), why don't you redirect to the brand website itslef tho? I mean, it's probably better to buy it there, pretty easilly found googling "segatoys space"
Does anyone know any UK supplies for the flux? Its on amazing but when I choose ‘see buying options’ it doesn’t say much. Want to try and avoid custom charges on top of everything 😅
Bought one from powerls recently and all I got sent to me is the two discs, can't contact anybody as they are in Asia and don't provide proper contact details.
My dude, you got scammed. If they offer you something for €30 when it retails for €190 - doesn't that raise suspicion? They ran this scam under a different Shopify store (or at least under a different name) and once they received heavy backlash on review sites, they simply changed the name. You won't get any money back, but let this be a lesson for the future :) If it's too good to be true, then it probably is.

Yes I've reviewed the DS1 and also compared it to the Flux ruclips.net/video/0RPzMIXlGk8/видео.html
Flux all day. That's the one I'm getting. Thanks for the video.
Does it really look like how you get it on camera? The Flux seems too sharp and too busy. I want to buy one but cant decide. Is the original too dark?
the flux is not so bright, the cameras are more sensible to light than human eyes, in the video will be brigther than you will be seen in the real life
Mark, thank you for your wonderful video. I watched with my girlfriend and it made my night. You are the best!
Thank you, I hope you (and she) have subscribed so you never miss a video 😉
Hey Mark! I was wondering if you can tell me if the original Sega or the flux makes any noise or loud noises. I'm a light sleeper and I would like to have one in my bedroom but in years past other types have been very noisy and just didn't work for me. Thanks so much for your help!💕
It makes some noise, see: ruclips.net/video/3y8nx1WVWfY/видео.html
Love your videos. Do you prefer dark skys over sega flux? Is ds1 worth double the cost?
They're both great devices, assuming budget is no problem (and that you can get hold of both) it really comes down to which design you prefer and the features on offer. I'd say most people will be very happy with the Flux.
Just checked the link for the Original the price hike is astronomical! From £70 to now almost £120. 😮
I like the look of these as I have visited the Planetarium in London and it was fantastic experience. Looking at the videos it suggests that the only colours are black and white. Is this the case ? As I would
love to see something similar to the multi colours of the cloud Nebula which you see on posters.
I think they have a disk called Nebula.
The newest flux with the Mate finish
Do the Sega versions have the ability to project still images or are they always rotating?
They can project still images
You can turn the setting off and on for movement
original hands down for me, way more mood in it
thanks for your review, it helps a lot!
Thanks a lot for this video, you saved me from spending money on a home planetarium :) My answer... None of them seem worth paying more than 15 Euros...
Thanks for the review, went with the Flux 👍
happy or too bright?
are there any planetarium that would react to music or sounds?
Like the flux but I find it a bit overwhelming, personally I like the original but both are beautiful in their own ways☺️
Btw, whatever you get (wether original or flux) you won't be disappointed.
Is the original too dark? I would of course use it at night.
I've just purchased a flux thanks to your review. Could you recommend any store I could purchase the discs from? Thanks
The offical online store for the discs is: www.astrial.com/en/index.html Enjoy!
can u actually match the stars , are they to scale, do they have an ability to name the stars on the screen ?
Anyway, which one is the best??
in my opinion, flux is the clearer than others!
DS1 DESTROY THEM ALL.
So cool, I love planetariums.
Is there a projector that shows the sky as per GPS location( much like those phone apps do)?
Mark, what is your favorite under $300 so far? I really want the dark sky's chrome but a bit high for a night light. I'm looking for clarity and accuracy.
I'd say for under 300,the Flux.
Am I right in saying that? 🙂 but would the discs of day time earth etc look as good in the original as the flux as I am keen to get some extra discs 😅 I don’t mind about price, I am just more wanting a beautiful visual experience for my little one ☺️
Thought about the flux but rather wait longer and save up for a ds1
what is a ds1?
hi Mark, wondering what your views are on the Omegon Star Theater Pro Planetarium, amazon selling them for £107, does it use same discs as Flux ?
Do all 3 have the shooting star function?
Is it normal that the picture at the side is out of focus? (Flux) That's a problem that I have. In the middle the stars are clear and at the sides not.
Yes it's nornal. The picture is coming out of a lense, and you're projecting it on a flat wall.
That’s what I would do just because I don’t go to sleep looking straight up
@@mirandabug Thanks :)
@@jessicaneumann6161 argh her answer isnt here anymore, what did she say?? is it a show stopper?
Bravo!!! Only reason I bought the Flux was due to your review. But after this video, i think going with the original or flux doesn't hurt at all. I might actually buy the original too.
Any updates?
Do you believe the flux is worth the price or should I just buy the original?
Which one can you dim the brightness
I bought the flux for my wife we were both very underwhelmed! We also bought the aurora borealis disk which looks like Picasso has thrown his spare paint on the ceiling complete waste of £170+ we have used this twice and it's back in its box!
It’s really not Amazing to see.
I have found an interesting one, but then aggain it cost 600 US dollar
Big Shooter what’s it called??
The room has to be completely dark...only the flux should be the light in the room. It is underwhelming if there is any other light on in the room...especially during the day and you have light entering through the shades. This is the best during the night. I would play the cosmic meditation album...it is awesome!
@@jacquescough3549 lool this guy Bigshooter mentions something and doesnt even say what it is
Stewart Jones sell it to me
Just curious- whould these work put inside a car to have it project on the roof or would it be way to close
Which one is the best?
So if I buy One of them the projector is ready or I have to buy something like what I’m gonna see?
Where can I get them? I’m from Mexico but it seems they are not ship here:/
I bought the original less than a month ago and it stopped rotating. It also gets warm. I'm sending it back. Does the flux have the same issues or did they correct it?
Are all the discs compatible on all of the devices?
Would this look weird on a ceiling with a paint pattern
Thank you for video!
My pleasure!
I like the flux, great video thanks.
Thanks for watching!
You mentioned you can buy different discs for the original and flux ... so can you ínstert the disc with a lot of starts on the original or it’s only the for the flux and vice versa ...?
Both discs are interchangeable between to two.
id say get all three and blend them
Hi Mark, You did this vid 2 years ago. Is there any improvement on the Sega or any others ? Not as much a the DS -1 . I'm looking to buy one.
As far as I know the Flux remains the newest model. I checked in with the team last year and they indicated they didn't have any plans to make a new one,, the consider the Flux to be spot on.
@@markjdraper Thanks for taken time to reply Mate, and for the info. Have a good Christmas 🎄 and take care. Now I have to try find one .😆
What do these do other than to have the stars projected..Can we pause, zoom in a star, locate a star, get some details about it ? Thanks
Can that dc to usb lead from new homestsr flux (at 1:47) be plugged in to power original homestar? Cheers!
Hi I just bought flux but stars appear squared.looks horrible.did anyone face something like that?
I think the Sega Homestar Original is the best.
omg i live in Latin America and idk how get that flux thing but its AMAZING! great video tho,.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 😁
i prefer the original !! much more realistic !
HI does a 360 project come with a custom input like a mobile phone or PC mirror. I want to display my own stuff.
No it's not that sort of projector. You want something like this: ruclips.net/video/4RXQYfGKVkA/видео.html
@@markjdraper I also want it to curve, or dome, or 180 degree curve. to make it immersive.
The national geographic ASTRO is 350$ Canadian I don't see how it can only be 90$ US as you stated our dollar isn't that bad
It's likely a 3rd party seller looking to take advantage of a lack of stock on the site, that's a massively over inflated price for this product.
good job thank you
the sega homestar original looks like your in a more light polluted area same with the astro but I like the flux cause it looks like your in a area without much light pollution
Jak prezentuje się na 10 metrach kwadratowych sufitu?
Which is quietest?

I am a little late to this video, so hopefully someone can see this comment. Will any of these project well on textures ceilings? In addition to my textured ceilings, my room is only 7ft tall. I want to get a clear projector because I love looking at (real) stars more than anything, and I just want to be sure I am finding the best match. Thanks to anyone who can give some input!
Edit: Would a projector be a better option for me? I saw his video on the projector being used to recreate planetarium projections, but I still worry about the texture and height of my ceilings.
Mark Draper Yes it does, thank you! I just purchased the Flux, so I’m excited to get to use it once it comes in.
No colors ??
Mark, where can i Buy It at that price ?? I'm really interested ! Please answer me.🙏
Prices were taken from Amazon at the time I made the video.
I got one off shein for under 50bucks. and for what it is it's pretty damm good. it has 12 slides.
called 12 in 1 galaxy projector.
Do all these (esp the Flux) have to be a maximum of 20 inches from the wall? Can they project on a ceiling with clarity?
I noticed the more uneven the ceiling is, you would notice the stars appear to be moving quickly in a different direction...feel like they are alive. Especially on a popcorn ceiling
Where can I purchase it in india
Stable video👍
Flux looks great
The Orginal is miles better, kooks more natural and milkyway looks better, the flux us unnatural and milkyway can see all the stars as individual stars, not looking natural at all. Was looking at the flux, but all the videos don't look right, so ended up with the standard, looks miles better, even my astronomy friends think so.
link where i can find the other disc?
top of screen on right the arrow either Amazon or ebay
Original looks more realistic to me
Flux i will buy it now.
Yup FLUX wins hands down. So good I ordered a second one from Firebox only £150 each. Who cares about the price. Flux is the best. The flux just looks natural.
Fucking rich
if you don't care about price ds1 is better than flux... ;)
Can you buy one for me? lol
@@eu_o_andy and me lol
Rather than redirect to amazon where the description of the products is pretty poor (and you can be missguided between regular and flux version pretty fast), why don't you redirect to the brand website itslef tho?
I mean, it's probably better to buy it there, pretty easilly found googling "segatoys space"
Does anyone know any UK supplies for the flux? Its on amazing but when I choose ‘see buying options’ it doesn’t say much. Want to try and avoid custom charges on top of everything 😅
Yeah just bought mine from Rother Valley optics Google them
Thanks very much! :)
@@ameliawhitehead3944 don't do it! Mine was very hard to focus and I'm probably giving it back
Ahh thanks for the heads up!
You won't get any money back, but let this be a lesson for the future :)
If it's too good to be true, then it probably is.
Likewise, all I got was two disks.... 😞
@@jussslove7622 Think a little, you too, before buying something that is too good to be true.
@@JunixZzHD Just saw an add on Facebook and thought it would make a good christmas gift for someone. I have never seen one before nor did I have a clue what its worth. Guess i learned the hard way. Only $40 no biggie, I ended up buying the sega flux $200 later lol 🤦♂️
