It's quite possible that SUM 41 are the first band to find success from going 'viral.' Long before the days of RUclips, SUM 41 turned a video of their teenage hijinks into a career that has bent genres and earned Grammy nominations.
In this APTV exclusive, Frontman Deryck Whibley provides the complete oral history of SUM 41-from the writing process of their breakthrough song, "Fat Lip," to how they created the iconic cover for "All Killer, No Filler," Whibley discusses every SUM album from 2000's "Half Hour of Power" to 2019's "Order In Decline." This is a must watch for every SUM 41 fan!

What’s YOUR favorite SUM 41 album?
Fat lip. I think.
CHUCKKKKKKK.
Chuck
Screaming Bloody Murder!
Does This Look Infected👌💚
“I’m not that much different than I was in high school.”
So he IS the one you thought you knew back in high school :P
He was never going, but ever showing up when he had to!
And the attention that they crave don’t tell them to behave there sic of always hearing act your age!
Still... he doesn't wanna waste his time and become another casualty of society.
he also doesn't wanna waste his time and become another victim of your conformity
You may be different but I'm still the same
Sum 41 went heavier by each album, as opposed to all the other punk bands, that went pop. That's why Sum 41 are ahead still
@@JDelvaMusic nope
Well i mean the reason blink is going so pop is Tom leaving
That’s not quite true
I would like to see another underclass hero type album, or all killer no filler.
Me too but i’m pretty sure it wouldn’t work out as well today. Pop/punk had it’s peak in the early 2000’s.
Said no one ever
I agree they are the best 2 albums
With Heaven/Hell, you'll half get your wish :)
@@sorrenspall It's supposed to be a double record, so I guess his wish can be considered fully granted
One of the greatest bands of our time, they havent let me down yet
And they are breaking up😢
Really enjoyed this, but the making of "13 Voices" was skipped and so was Stevo's departure
Yeah! Probably the most important album since we almost lost Deryck.... seems like he didn't want to talk about it ?
I think its because he's spoken about it at length enough
And spider man
Why did Stevo leave? I never found out.
@@mikewranich same, i've even looked into it. :( wish they had him still.
Can't help but notice he completely glazed over Stevo's departure and 13 Voices...
I never gave a damn about Stevo but I wonder how exactly he left the band, what happened. And also the 13 Voices thing, there are a lot of interviews of him talking about almost dying and the recovery, probably he doesn´t like talking about that now that he got better.
@@GianlucaBaccino I think Stevo works in real estate now. That's not a joke.
@@GianlucaBaccino I'm fairly certain he was tired of always being gone from his family and wanted to be with them more, so left the band. I follow him on Instagram still and he does real estate now in Southern California.
A Murder Of Crows is about him. Enough said.
@@Tauva No, it's not.
What a well guided descripton of the band's history. I'm liking all this promo for the album, and the songs sound great.
CVM181 Thanks so much for watching!! We got a preview of the new record and as a personal massive fan of SUM, I can confidently say it’s incredible.
that was awesome. i'm a huge sum 41 fan but learned some new things. can't wait to hear order in decline.
Benji 41 🤘🤘🤘The new album is incredible. As a massive SUM fan, I can personally assure you that it’s really special.
Fuck, imagining seeing them back in the day performing Half Hour of Power before they blew up!!
I love it, that they are putting out so much content on AP and Loudwire to promote their new Album!
Jonas I. Just wait until you hear the new record. It’s SO SO SO good.
Nobody:
Rockstars: "I need to wear sunglasses indoors!"
Its call permanent hangover
rho gantier Not in Derycks case
I love listening to musicians talk about how much they love just being musicians.
Proud fan since 2002 when i was 7 years old and i know that im a proud fan to the day i take my last breath 🤘 deryck u are the best!
I was 5
Chuck was their best album in my opinion. 👍
Minus pieces and that other softer than baby shit song
I don't get why Deryck doesn't like Underclass Hero that much, sure it has some lyrics to Lavigne, and it has the most poppy moments but that record is such a standout in my opinion. The harmonies were done so well. The chord progressions may be the same on lots of songs, its still a more interesting listen than many other records. Speak Of The Devil / Dear Father / MOTD & The Jester / Pull The Curtain. I like these songs more than most other songs. They never sounded like this again, you could kinda hear it on the 2008 single ''Always'', but then they went full SBM
I think its the most disliked album of them, in my opinion its not bad at all, Walking Disaster, Count Your Last Blessings, Pull The Curtain, With Me, Underclass Hero and other few songs are a perfect example. The album also has some songs very forgettable songs that even some of them sound very similar and that probably was the thing that most of the people dislike.
I dont care about what most of the fans like, I just think that this band has evolved in a way that no other band did and they keep getting better and better.
Yeah I think its their best album. Only downfall was lack of killer solos. But the melodies were so good and the lyrics really hit home. Walking Disaster might still be my favorite song by them
@@Ltjrevival Hmm i don't think lack of killer solos was a downfall. Underclass Hero screams for simple but melodic poppunk solos, Dave's playing wouldn't have worked on that record i guess
It's a break up album and I think it shows. The themes are sort of repetitive and the music kinda blurs into one in my memory. There are some great songs like Count Your Last Blessings and With Me, but for me, Screaming Bloody Murder was the right change from punk, not Underclass Hero.
I can not agree. The album is the most harmonious and harmonious in sound. Definitely my favorite album. Like some more songs from Chuck, but Underclass Hero - favourite.
This guy is born on the exact day as me. Relevance? None! Incredible? Yes! 😁👍
Nothing about steveo leaving?
Wow, thank you so much for this. I love the entire history. I didn’t know all of this was going on while enjoying all these great songs and albums from Sum41
THIS WAS SWEET! thanks!
Vapez Thanks so much! We appreciate it!
This was such a good video. I love how Deryck talks about the focus being on playing live. Some cool effects can be done in the recording studio, but if you can't do it live what's the point.
This video brought life to my day
Wow this will be interesting! I love when he talks about his music!!
I love this kind of videos!
Great video, can´t wait for the new album to come out.
Gianluca Baccino 🤘🤘💀 thank you!!
You made that comment with many replies on 45!
@@jakubchaaban2189 oh yeah lol, cosmo is evil haha
Does this look infected is still they're best ever imo (but there all so good )
They're**
Agree
@@eliyafethsoto1309 *their
@@cloudbloom No, the other dude was right.
Think of it as "They Are all so good" that's what he's saying and they are is shortened into They're.
Their, what you said, is more like if someone came up to you, showed you an item and said "who's is this?" and you point to someone and say "It's their's"
Or If you say something along the lines of "My friend rang and asked if I could go to their house"
Pretty much, their is used when you're talking about something belonging to someone.
The guitars on DTLI? sound so thick and chunky. Always loved that album.
NOFX and Pennywise hotdamn just when I think I can't love this man more he comes up with more reasons to adore him!
Beautiful.
Love this band
All of their songs are my favs songs
would love to hear more music from you guys..
This was so good but skipping over a whole album and Steve-o's departure made the end very awkward
I remember hearing my first Sum 41 song back in 2009. I was only five at the time and it was We're All To Blame
New songs and new hard sound are more lovely then old one's
The Beatles behind Deryck is cool!
Was the Fatlip video filmed in Sunnyvale Trailer Park
Love hearing a bands history from the horses mouth
A great band
All hail Sum 41
7:45 HAHHAHAHAHHAA I LOVE that story 😂😂😂
I remember watching the whole thing in the Congo on much music
*Lov you guys so much known **#Sum41** for like 2 Months*
I almost forgot they're a Canadian band.
As a Canadian myself, it's often hard for me to believe that a country like Canada has produced rock music this good. But, here they are.
Man, the background music from Half Hour of Power to AKNF sounds so good! Does anyone know what it is?
There's a reason people were sunglasses it makes you look cool 😂😂
Someone got shot. 3:45
You Got Lucky! God Love Ya!
nice.
Infected the lyrics really related to me as a 16/17 yr old in 2002
Blink 182 oral history next please!
All The Good ****
What's the name of the song playing in the background?
It's Julian Assange in the middle 16:22
Why do they never address the reason stevo left?
Dtli? and Chuck are my favorite albums from them.
I rly love how he hasn't rly changed :')
The story of how they first got signed to a label is so funny and inspiring hahahh
the vibe of dtli does sth to me
Whaooo.... no mention of 13 Voices... okay
WHY STEVO LEFT THE BAND?
Screaming Bloody Murder is definitely their best record, period.
Hahaha no
@@mississippijones5204 agree to disagree, sir ;)
IT IS!
@@mississippijones5204 Hahaha yes
What about Stevo32 ? Why did he leave the band ?
Forreal its always been so vague why he left . I wanna hear the real reason
I thought it was Quentin Tarantino in the thumbnail?
Is it just me or does it look like he’s wearing those sunglasses with the fake nose attached?? Haha
2:34 played right as I saw your comment and profile picture lol
pennywise247 MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY. Maybe had surgery?
looks like drunk nose, which I hope isn't the case.
Alan's Beer and Gaming totally is the case. He had a crazy alcohol problem. Nearly died if I’m not mistaken
Damn, it does look like Drinker’s Nose!
Who's seeing them in Toronto on August 8th?
Vip section for no reason lol
Korn and Alice in chains Aug 14th!
What about Frank Zummo joining?! Man, drummers get no love
he is a great drummer
Saw them in London Ontario once, was at western fair.... They cancelled the show after the opening bands because sum band members of sum41 didn't show up.
That's my memory of sum 41
Deryck was banging Paris Hilton that night Did you go back the 2nd night?
When you dont even realize one your favorite bands is Canadian even after all these years but you dont care because you grow up with the music.
Wouldn’t matter
This is random but does anyone know what you would call the type of hst he's wearing lol
He didn't discuss Steve-o's departure........
He never does :(
I’m so fucking sad they’re splitting up
Nice glasses.. what are you hiding...?
Am I the only one who thinks Derick can barely open his mouth to talk?
One of my fav bands. His nose is annoying.
So, in short: most things that happened in the early days of their career happened because they wanted to make someone laugh.
Looks are artificial and I’m not trying to be mean but I can’t look away from his nose. Never seen one like it.
y is his nose so huge now
It's just music. Not a big deal here.
people dont call this punk rock do they???
Hot take: Sum 41 is the next Metallica 4️⃣🖕
A proper Documentary wouldn't be bad
