Dave Baksh and Tom Thacker are the guitar team behind SUM 41-a band that has made a career out of fusing urgent pop punk with thrashy metal riffs and making music that embraces Slayer and NOFX in equal measure. In this APTV exclusive, Baksh and Thacker talk all things guitar and why the Joe Strummer quote "if you can't dance to it, I don't want to play it" is the driving mantra behind their approach to the instrument. Baksh and Thacker also play through some of the first riffs they ever learned, explain the early unorthodox ways Baksh tried to play his instrument and shred some Iron Maiden through a MacBook Pro. This is why Sum 41 were always one step ahead of every other 2000s punk band. The influence from Iron Maiden was there from the start. Even on the first two "lighter" albums, the harmonies were always present. And they perfected their style of metal on Infected and Chuck! Out For Blood sounds so heavy and badass, which means the album is gonna be among the best they've done

they couldn"t be more right. i started playing guitar after sum 41 came out, then got into gob and a hole bunch of other bands. i started playing just by finding tabs for sum 41 songs, putting on there cd and just playing along with them.

anthony morales It was a logistics issue. Their amps were being set up on stage and they didn’t have practice amps. We had too much production gear to fit a practice amp in with us and we made the best of it. Regardless, the takeaway here is that Tom and Dave can still play the shit out of a MacBook.

Meh, things are versatile and its probably personal taste. With a few tweaks to pots and pickups you can make that guitar your dream.

I can fully understand it! I had my Strat and i wasn‘t happy with it. Put a SD Hot Rail in and slammed some Chrom covers on the Singlecoils and now i love it!
