    Great video, thanks James!
The reason I got into Triathlon in the first place, and now religiously watch all of the GTN content, was to improve my health, and specifically my gut health.
When I got diagnosed with IBS, it was a long, arduous and lonely journey to figure out what foods were triggering the symptoms - approaching from the FODMAP perspective definitely helped and keeping a food diary was the only real effective way to figure this out.
The trifecta for getting a grip and managing my IBS really was Nutrition (figuring out and avoiding trigger foods; as described in the video), Mental Health (you'd be surprised at how much of the symptoms were down to anxiety, nerves, etc) and Activity (and a lot of it, found that it makes me and my body a lot more resilient and quicker to recover).
However, with nutrition, especially gels - I find Fructose to be a commonplace ingredient (one of my trigger foods in higher quantities). Do you or anyone else have any recommendations for nutrition without Fructose?
This is a topic that still carries with it a lot of stigma and people rarely open up about these issues, so it really is great to see this video pop up.

For women and especially older women, I suggest reading or listening to Dr Stacy Sims books and interviews. I find the books a bit too technical for me but I've followed some of her advice, like increasing proteine intake before and after exercising, reducing carb intake in evening and feeling much better. Also delighted to get off the foodmap diet.

Great video!!! Many thanks for all your insights, it’s a really interesting topic. Nutrition is indeed a very big contributor to the success of race. I think I need to do a lot of testing to improve my nutrition strategy 😅

Future GTN Video Idea - GTN enter 2024/2025 race season for a mixed team really series getting a guest female athlete to sub in for each race. The audience follow the training the race prep, the kit optimisation, specific mix team really sessions and joint intervals. Then videos are made on the races and there results and the prep for the next race with results.

sorbitol is well known for causing diarrhea as it is an osmotic diuretic. it happens to people who use too much sorbitol chewing gum as well.

Hi James, can I guess that this would be the PH tablets versus the PH sachets? As I feel I have the same issue with the tablets, yet I appear at the moment to be fine with the sachets of PH1000. Do you have any links to any guides on where to start with looking for FODMAP issues like the one you were talking about? Many Thanks

Oof. I already have the most diva stomach at the best of times (I won't bore you with the list of things I cannot eat), it didn't occur to me that there could be race-only issues to contend with too. I guess until I start training and testing out nutrition, I won't know. Fingers crossed.

It only took me 4 years of running to realize I'm probably very mildly lactose intolerant and it fires up in runs.
Started to cut out lactose in the day before a run and so far so good.

Hello i am facing in the last 3 years gut problems using during endurance races… marathons and Ironman races even Olympic distance… after an amount of 3 hours and using powder carbs or sodium i start to experience HIPCUT uncontrolled and gas forcing me to stop to drink or eat or speak… even after the event i still not be able to speak, eat or drink the rest of the day. The last week end i finished Laguna Phuket Triathlon and same problems happened but at the end of the race i took a protein drink with more density texture and it stop my pain … i was surprised and i start to be confused about the reason of this intolerance… could you help? Thank you… i am facing in february 2024 Ironman Bangsaen .

I always forget when signing up for an Ironman that time in the race after 34K and 5 gels when every time you land on your feet the gravitational force makes you fart, matching your running and your farting cadence…

If you refer to celiac I would argue that it is binary. It's an autoimmune disease not rely intolerant to gluten similar to lactose

They do not refer to celiac. I'm also intolerant to gluten (to other lectins as well) and I don't have celiac.
