This was exactly what we’ve been looking for. Everyone is talking about nutrition however, this is the first time somebody’s actually mapped it out. Looking forward to several others!
I always enjoy the videos with Leon Chevalier. He is thoughtful, articulate and, of course, a talented triathlete. Plus, Snickers is also one of my favorites.
It should be noted that Leon's bike time in South Africa was 4:11 and that many age groupers spend almost this much time doing the bike leg during a 70.3.
Yeah… so I definitely made fueling mistakes in my race today which resulted in cramping in both my thighs during the run. First duathlon done and dusted, though. And I’ll definitely do another.
Claim to fame!!! My first Ironman was Bolton, and I lost both my bottles coming out of T1!!! Tbf, that’s about the only thing I have in common with Leon, but I’ll take it!
@gtn would be good to understand the pros and cons of carrying all your nutrition (including fluids) vs picking up on the course. there are plenty of videos on nutrition quantities (grams per hours etc), but no good video on the logistics for a full IM. A race breakdown of how, when and what pro athletes fuelled; or a race simulation video would be very helpful. could you please do another one of these for a full Ironman?
Best hack someone gave me was to have the two cage bottles with 3 hours worth of electrolytes each for my 6ish hour ride. Rather than thinking of it as oz per hour of a mix and having to stop and pick up more electrolyte bottles I get it all without stopping and know I need to do one in the first half and the other the second half. I also have a small aerobar tank where I’ve got water to drink to thirst as needed and can top up on the course. Clearly I’m out there longer than the pros!! I also had two 5 gel packs in my tri suit from Gu where I put in the gels from their large 15 gel size container. No fussing with individual gels, twist and go is so much better and no trash. Same as the electrolyte bottles - one first half and one the second half I did this during training and it worked flawlessly in my race. Snack in the middle - uncrustable just for fun - also in my tri suit.
Very helpful seeing this setup and given some ideas for fueling and storage. Im doing my first ironman this year in Bolton and will defo make use of the bands to make sure i dont lose any bottles.
I'm surprised Mark wasn't keen of the elastics (rubber bands) solution to preventing bottles launching. My coach gave me the same advice, although he suggested hair ties (more durable than a rubber band). It's an effective, lost cost and easy solution to a common problem; what's not to like?
Might be a stupid question as I’m not too familiar with the bands; do you not struggle hooking the bottle back into the band as you’re riding? Or do you stretch it really far and drink with the band still attached? Thanks
Don’t get me wrong, super informative. But he is a world class Triathlete with a much shorter time to fuel for. What do us mortals do when we need to fuel for 14 hours for an Ironman instead of 7 hours like these pros. Seriously question if anyone can help please?
This is a great question and as you say individual sodium / electrolyte losses can vary vastly. If you would like us to dive into this further with you drop us a message. We are always here to help answer your questions
Great video. So this setup is for 70.3 - and he is able to carry everyting on the bike. What does he do when it's a full dustance? He must refuel at some point and get new bottels along the way. That is my challange with full distance.
@@markthrelfall3577 right right … i missed that even after the second time i Saw the video ✌️. Special needs are great. But seems like when the pro field is not in the race the special needs are “downgraded” by the organizer. The special needs for the run in Copenhagen im last year was on the street concrete not on a table like i would have hoped. I kind of missed the special need on the run since there was no table and no nothing. I had to ask where is was hahha. But normally the special need is a table not laying on the street. It would be a nightmare If the special needs was laying on the street for the bike. Not very fast pickup. I hope they do it another way this year… 👍
I love Brits and the total acceptance of any and all weather. I'm pretty sure it rained, hailed, and then sunshine over this video. Zero cares or notice given! Awesome and so funny!
Very impressive that you two can squat like that for 13 minutes!
Lmfao. This is exactly what I was thinking 😂
😂
❤
Presumably even longer, considering the raw film material is longer 😮

Wow he really knows his numbers! I love these deeper dive videos for subjects that are really hard to cover succinctly - super informative video.
That was a great video and really informative! Made me consider a few places I may be going wrong. Will watch again before my 70.3 later in the year!
If you would like us to support you in your build up to your next 70.3 just give us a shout 🤙

That's helpful, doing my first half in September, never gone beyond an Olympic before where fueling is less an issue

Sounds like a great set up Lizzo! Keep smashing it!
GTN is best love it❤
Very informative video you guys gave us .. keep the good work 👍
Super helpful video. Wish I’d watched this before my first Ironman last month 😂
Elastics bands are prefect. Possibly tape on the bottom of the bottle so it can’t slip out.
Amazing video.. learned a lot from this.
Outstanding training 👍

Great video…..does Leon use some sort of straw on his BTA bottle or just take it out and drink it?

I have been wondering if 'over electrolyting' was possible. I guess like all things, it is highly variable.

@@precisionfandh I had planned on that, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

What about hydration? Surely the small amount of water he adds to the bottles on the bike won't suffice?
Great video. So this setup is for 70.3 - and he is able to carry everyting on the bike. What does he do when it's a full dustance? He must refuel at some point and get new bottels along the way. That is my challange with full distance.
This was his setup for a full distance. He takes an extra water bottle or two at the aid stations

Why is the water bottle on the handlebar turned that way instead of the opposite way?
