    The devs are actually being smart in terms of their marketing. Not only is it more moral to not charge customers more than once for a completed product, it's what fans have WANTED; therefore, filling that niche of desire is within their best interest too to gain the trust of their customer base and establish themselves at a higher tier in the market. In short, other game developers are being whiney simply because they did not have the balls to take the loss and revitalize their relationship with their players.

    • @tommerker8063

    • @TheEphemeralEternity
      @TheEphemeralEternity 11 месяцев назад +1

      @tommerker8063 small microtransaction games a long a singular title to be very fruitful, not arguine with that; however, it does not instill the trust of players to continue to support the products a developer may produce in the future. While this may not sound like a big deal to us as consumers, game development is extremely costly in terms of time and resources; if your target demographic doesn't buy it, that is a massive hit.
      A good example of this phenomenon is Forspoken, while square enix doesn't have major microtransactions issues normally, the game simply was very badly received and they were forced to drop the price multiple times within the first few weeks because they were desperate to raise sales. If giant companies like Square Enix can feel the burn after a new IP has failed, you can easily imagine that developers of any size will feel it when they have a failure on their hands.
      The only exceptions that can get away with this are the ones that have a very widely established IP and few original titles. Riot games and League of Legends come to mind. Some accounts are worth thousands based in microtransactions for in-game content; however, the game is so large, and they have made so few new titles that they don't really need to worry. Moreover, the few new projects they have created in recent years are built off of their single successful IP; while failed projects will still hurt them, you can still see that the development and care for lower budget/low-risk projects (such as Mageseeker and Ruined King) are advertised less than the higher budget (such as Arcane and the upcoming Project L).
      Tldr: Heavy use of microtransactions to milk players is not a sustainable business model if a developer wants to expand the IPs under them in the future.

      Goes to show how disconnected those people are.
      Besides, I think most of the devs who have been vocal about BG3 in this way fail to realise that by them stating all those things, they indirectly imply that they not only know their own game and BG3 are leagues apart. But also that they seem to think that, even with a good team of people around them, they wouldn't be ablo to do this. With or without stakeholder quota's to meet.
      Either that... Or that they've given up on the dream they had starting out as devs.
      Though it saddens me to think alot of them possibly have simply accepted that making a game this way, with this intent, is simply never going to happen because of the way all of their earlier development experiences never would have cause an event like this. From this angle it almost sounds like they simply lost that fire because of how all earlier projects were managed.

      You may remember from your introduction to business or economics classes that the sole purpose of a business is to maximize profits. That is their function. Those that fail to do so do not survive. How could your biggest issue with corporations be that they are fulfilling their core function?
      In a market economy, when a consumer is not pleased with a product, they should not purchase the product. The market will correct itself if Endymion's concerns are valid and resonate with the majority of consumers. It is not something you need to agitate about. The invisible hand will take care of the issue.
      Unless, of course, your concerns do not encompass the majority of consumers. In which case you are crying in the rain.

    • @Roccondil
      @Roccondil 11 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, it's annoying that instead of settling for just being profitable, shareholders are greedy enough to demand that profits go up. They want their wealth *now*, instead of their investment being a long-term thing. And thus companies go from being long-term stable to being volatile if they cannot produce more money than they did last year.

    • @Ollybollyk
      @Ollybollyk 11 месяцев назад +4

      @@user-et2fx5ju7p You're wrong. A company doesn't exist just to make money, money is the lifeblood of a company. *Companies exist* , because there is a demand for a product, and either that product does not exist or the supply is not meeting the demand. Simple example being the food industry.
      What you said is the equivalent to saying "A human being only exists to produce blood". Which is the dumbest possible way to interpret human biology classes.
      To add on to this, gaming is a form of entertainment and that should be the first and foremost priority. When a developer cares more about getting a bigger paycheck than producing a desired form of entertainment, it doesn't matter anymore how profitable that company is, because it has failed the only true purpose it had to exist at all. The same way a human being is not succesful in life, just because they eat unhealthy and unneeded amounts of food every day and can somehow still walk.
      Resources are spent to create, not to acquire more of itself.

    • @Ollybollyk
      @Ollybollyk 11 месяцев назад

      @@user-et2fx5ju7p Moreover, anyone that rubs their 2 braincells together on how supply and demand functions knows that it is not as simple as "if the product is bad, it won't be sold". That entirely depends on how much of said product is needed, how much supply there is relative to demand, what can the consumer actually afford to pay in terms of both quantity and quality, is there any reason at all a consumer would settle for a lower quality product in the face of lack of supply, and so much more
      For the same reason you will buy a basket of apples with half of them being rotten if it's all you the food you can find in a timespan of days, a videogame enthusiast will buy a catalogue of bad and good games because they simply can't entertain themselves forever by playing the same 10 great games and will eventually want to move on.
      In this day and age, many corporate gaming giants go out of their way to either make you forget about older games by making them harder to obtain and hiding info on them so you'd buy their new ones (yes, this is actually happening), making older games completely obsolete so you are forced to buy their new game, or to just bloat a game with hundreds of subtle psychological tricks and gags to drain as much money as possible out of the *individual consumer* as cheap as possible.
      And that, I don't call that a company anymore. That's just a monstrosity disguised under logos, acquistions, brands and legal structures, with a bunch of delusional egomaniacs tugging the reins as violently as possible.

    as a developer (not in the games industry) I'm a bit more understanding of the devs from triple A studios pushing back on this becoming a standard. The main reason is that in software development, most of the time the developers actually writing the code and making the games often aren't the ones getting to decide what they work on. It's usually someone much further up making decisions in regards to share holders and profits and those decisions get forced down the chain to devs themselves who likely get the bare minimum amount of time to get critical game features working, but likely have as much time as they need to microtransactions and other storefront features working. Often times these devs are not happy that they literally are not allowed to work on the things that would actually improve the gameplay.
    That being said these devs who are scared of having to re-create what BG3 has done should be pushing back on their management and the C-suite of their studios, and not be pushing back on the expectations of the players (who are the actual source of income for these studios at the end of the day). We as players primarily want 3 things: 1. a completed game on launch (no massive bugs, game actually playable and no day 1 DLC), 2. to have our time as players respected. Games progressions shouldn't be intentionally slowed with the sole intent of increases micro-transaction profits (lookin at you EA with BF2 and their "sense of pride and accomplishment" for locking vader behind 60+ hours minimum of playtime) and 3. to not have every single new title be live service, if you can play the game solo, you shouldn't need an internet connection to play it and god forbid shouldn't be kicked off the server if lose connection.

      Wouldn't say 100% healthy, but I agree that it is needed.
      Balder's Gate 3 was a perfect storm of "everything going right" AND the company choosing to favor the players over their bottom line.
      I agree with Jim Sterling's point that it can't be expected for games to be made to this scale constantly. This game is the "gold standard", not the "standard everyone should aim for".
      That said, I do strongly believe that MANY of the practices adopted by this game SHOULD become the industry standard. Basicly, the pro-consumer practices and focus on making their game properly instead of cutting corners for whatever reason. If a company can't afford to make a game to this scale, then they should just scale it down to something they can manage and make that a polished product.

      Fable was a decent game, good even.
      But if you followed "project ego" in development, you would never say it was good at all. I'm sure you can find the interviews and dev behind the scenes clips that they put out for years somewhere. Most of it was magazine articles tho, Fable was right as the internet was on the rise and youtube wasn't really a thing yet so most, nearly all, of the people who got Fable never saw a peep of project ego as it was developed.
      The sheer scope of broken promises across Fable 1&2 makes the launch of no man's sky look like baldurs gate 3.
      The ability for the developer and publisher to lie and admit they lied with a weak apology, then do it again 2 more times, and STILL not face severe backlash absolutely is the original stage for game development to become what it has.

      @Wustenfuchs109 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@skyMcWeeds You completely morphed their complaints about BG3. It is not about the game being complete or not, or having MTS or not. They specifically stated that BG3 should not be taken as a new benchmark because the franchise and the system is not something that just came out of nowhere.
      D&D, as a system and a collection of stories and mechanics is something that has been developing for over 40 years now. Any developer that takes it up has half of the job already done for them - it then becomes a job of translating what is already there into a good game in technical sense. So the developers are indeed right - you should not expect every single game to use BG3 as a benchmark because not every IP comes with the baggage that BG3 does.
      First of all, the main thing that made BG3 good is its broadness and multitude of choices and stories. That right there is almost exclusively the luxury of RPG games, meaning that the only games that would fight even in the same wight class are other RPG games. You cannot expect anything on that level from an RTS of a FPS game.
      And second, if we talk about RPGs, there is simply no bigger daddy than D&D setting. So tell me, how exactly do you expect some other studio to come along, be it AAA devs or what ever, with a new IP, and be judged with the same criteria?
      It's like expecting from a new fantasy film IP to compete with Lord of the Rings trilogy. Yes, LotR did set a high standard for fantasy epic films. The highest standard to date. But it had the benefit of the most famous fantasy writer as a base and one of the best directors and casts in its time. How can you expect a new IP to compete with that?
      And that was the point of developers - BG3 is great, but don't expect all of us to all of a sudden start churning BG3-level games because it is a "new standard". You COULD say and expect something like Dragon Age:Origins level of creation (which is in fact what Larian copied with their Origin mechanics - though I think it was done better in DA:O) because it was a fresh IP, new setting, and done by an established studio.
      DA:O does not come close in the scope of BG3, yet it is an awesome game. It could not come close to that, because it is NEW.
      I play a lot of RPGs, be it on my PC be it tabletop. And for me, both Pathfinder games (Kingmaker and WotR) are better than BG3. I even had more fun in Pillars of Eternity 2. In story, in characters, in setting, in game and level design... but all those games lacked production quality. There wasn't a voiced narrator and every dialogue being a cut-scene. But all of them told a better story, with better characters, using better game mechanics. D&D is notorious for having the worst RPG mechanic in the business. BG3 has some of the most irritating characters I have seen, OK-ish story, and level design where 70% of the level is empty space. You like it? Enjoy it! I wasn't.
      So in more ways than one, developers who are saying "don't take BG3 as a new benchmark" are right. I guess there are some who are bitching about it simply because it is popular - but the ones I saw, and arguments they made - make perfect sense.
      Just like when Witcher 3 came out, we didn't set it as a standard for RPG genre or any genre really. So I don't know what the fuss is all about. It was an awesome game and everyone just went on with their life. Developers did not bitch about it, because there wasn't yet a toxic audience like there is today, just a few years later. And while I'd agree that there are some 10% butthurt and jelly developers out there, 90% have a perfectly valid point.
      If you had it your way, no indie game or new IP would ever see the light of day because neither of those things can ever hope to compete with BG3 and reach the new benchmark. And that was the whole point of criticism of you fanboys.

      I hope it will bring about a turn based game renaissance. Like don't get me wrong I think BG3 is way over rated. But I love turn based games and Larian does the mechanics of them very well, even if i dislike their characters and story writing. And its success may bring more turn based games to life. Heck maybe some old turn based games will return to their roots, dragon age(turnish), final fantasy(yeah yeah ATB) and I'd love to see that. I'm happy with the no micro transactions complete game angle but I guess the games i normally buy haven't been that heavy into that so its never been a huge issue for me. Like sure mass effect had some but outside the multi player in 3(which was awesome and im not big into multiplayer) it wasn't that big of a deal, I don't remember any in FF7 remake but im sure they had pre-order stuff at least, did elden ring have any? maybe, probably but it was unintrusive enough that if it existed i never felt any desire to even look at their store if it existed.
      so yeah it existed but was it wasn't a thing for me to be worried about, the single player RPG space was and so far is pretty light in that regard. Sure eventually they may come out with a gear dlc pack or something, but the game was and is complete without it.

      Hey thanks for sharing this. Interesting that your opinions got so much back lash. There's plenty of role model games: Zelda TotK / BotW, God of War -/Ragnarok, RDR2, DOOM -/Eternal, Elden Ring, It Takes Two, Ori and The Will of The Wisps, Hades, etc - all of these are pushing their corresponding genres forward just as BG3 is pushing cRPG.

      Devs are being forced to crunch more and more by these big corporate entities. I guarantee you they are not happy with this arrangement either. You are being tricked into letting your attention stray from the real culprits, the executives and shareholders that continue to make record profits. They get money from sales and micro transactions, their goal is to spend as little money as possible on a game and then milk it for all they can. Given no organized resistance from the devs, their economic incentive is to force as much work as possible on the devs for as little pay as they can without killing them. Only way to break this cycle is organized resistance from the devs, aka, unionization, threat of strikes.
