Back in those days America (and pretty much all the West) was vastly majority white. No wonder it was made for white men, by white men. Its still mostly white, but far less today and the media has a very rose-tinted view of demographics to promote every other ethnicity. The racists are them.

That is all their opinion, an opinion that exists in a book that nobody is going to buy. Besides it only goes to show what kinds of people they really are. I can only imagine what Gary Gygax would say if he saw what Hasbro/WOTC has done to DnD. Also let's never forget Hasbro/WOTC sent The Pinkertons after a fan for having unreleased cards to his house.
Yeah, I've read some of Gary's articles in early Dragon magazines. It seems the guy was very opinionated and definitely wouldn't hold his punches. But in the end I think it's better than he doesn't have to see what has become of his invention (same goes for Dave Arneson).

Great thing about dnd, house rules always win. Internet is also full of PDF's you can get of the books. Just because the manual says that orcs are exactly the same as Elves, or you get a +2 non binary bonus, doesn't mean you as dungeon master have to allow it.
I'm a Messianic Jew, and I play D&D with an Arab guy from Saudi Arabia. We both love the same kinds of stories. Our characters do things like eating pork, even though neither of us eat pork in real life. Neither of us find that offensive, because it's the character living in a fantasy world.
Same for me been playing D&D all my life and it is just fun to have my character do think I would never do in real life. It's pure escapism (something that harder to find now a days)

The only thing that will speak to the company is if we don't buy the game, but 90% of gamers don't care about game politics or never seen it to begin with. So long as the people fighting back against these companies are such a minority they won't change.

Vishnu has a stat block. Zeus has a stat block. Thor has a stat block. Everyone has a stat block in case a dungeon master wants a balanced way of using them in their campaign. Granted, there's a murderhobo saying "if it has a stat block, I can kill it" and that is an individual thing.
But Lord Vishnu is still worshipped by a large number of people, but thor and zeus are not, so even if they want to keep him as a Character, he should have no stat block and be a power akin to Aio Or higher or best of all be a substitute name for the DM.

The great thing about DnD is that it has a large degree of flexibility in the storytelling and gameplay. When we play we don't have to acknowledge any changes that Wizards of the coast make to it and can continue to play it the way we always have. Just don't bother buying any of their new books and use the stuff you like that the fanbase makes and support those individuals. If the woke stuff doesn't sell they won't be able to afford to keep making it and it will go away. This is how companies work. We shackle them with the almighty dollar.
Making d&d inclusive is like saying air isn’t for everyone. It’s an rpg where you make whatever you want. D&D is already the most inclusive thing ever. These people are ridiculous.

I gave up on DnD, and went on to Savage Worlds and Traveller. The only way I can ever give DnD a shot again, is if WoTC goes bankrupt and the IP gets purchased by someone not connected to this mess in any way. Maybe then there will be hope

Which is my main criticism of the new (after 1st ed) rule sets. They try to control your imagination instead of adding to it and letting you grow from there. It's a form of supervision by proxy.

I always smile at fact that DnD is more of framework for stories, so whatever Wizards of the Coast will enforce doesn't really matter... their universum is pretty much out of control of their hands and if they continue... it's not hard to copy DnD and make world of your own. Wizards of the Coast don't hold any rights to races or medieval fantasy genre as it is so I wouldn't worry about it. All franchises clearly need to rot out for fresh and uncorrupt breath to come in.
Funny how I was an original player of the original D&D. I played the game with boys and girls. There was NEVER one single thought that the game was not inclusive or that there weren’t enough girls. Considering the sheer number of layoffs and closures across the industry, it hasn't worked out for them. I’ve done the same for the Lego Bionicle franchise: If that were rebooted today, Gali would be the leader, Tahu would be a woman, Kopaka would be autistic, and Lewa and Pohatu would be gay. Only Onua could stay the way he is - because he’s black. 😂 But there’s one thing making this unlikely: Lego are Danish. The Danes are comparatively based. Even though Lego caved in to the “cultural appropriation” Maōri lawsuit back in the day - but that was in the early 2000s, long before any wokester had even come up with the term “cultural appropriation”.

Like most things, there are multiple reasons why things happen, not just one uber-simple explanation. As an old TTRPG player who played with black people in the late 70s, here are the real reasons why they didn't play much D&D: 1) Less exposure: fantasy movies weren't mainstream, there was almost no anime, no internet, barely any videogames, and the only people interested in playing "fantasy" were people who actively read fantasy novels (which had just started to grow in popularity). While some black men got exposed to gaming in the military, fewer black people were going to college, which was the other place RPGs spread by word of mouth. Black people didn't grow up with fantasy, so they weren't interested in playing a game that simulated fantasy. 2) Smaller demographic: Black people are only 10% of the US population, and in the places the games started (Wisconsin/Minnesota), they are even smaller minorities. They made up even less of the player base. Once the game spread to the coasts, you started to see some people get into it, but it was still a smaller number. Good luck being a black teen looking for other black teens to play the weird "elf" game with... 3) Cultural disinterest: Per #1, black people didn't like Fantasy very much. They liked music, movies, comedy and sports (guys played a lot of sports). If you're a black male teen, you played basketball to socialize with your friends, get fit, and impress girls (being cool was a higher priority culturally, than being a scrawny fantasy nerd). Most hardcore black boardgamers played things like Chess, not esoteric wargames. 4) It wasn't cool: fantasy and nerd chic culture didn't exist. It was stigmatized, and you got bullied for it. Often, people kept their interest secret to avoid this. 5) Religion: black people were much more religious (esp. Baptist or Pentecostal) and there was a Satanic Panic going on -- D&D was considered evil by fundamentalists, and it was harder for black kids to participate without getting discriminated against -- by other black people. 6) Cost: game books cost about the same back then: adjusted for inflation, $150 for 3 game books, extra for dice, and other accessories, plus you had to find other people who were into playing. Black teens from less well off families had a harder time affording the game. If you asked your mom for books for Christmas, she'd shake her head, and give you baseball or basketball equipment, and tell you to go outside and play a big group game with your friends that only required a free playground and one ball. Maybe they'd invest in football equipment, to help get a sports scholarship for college. Not D&D books -- no way. Of course, you could just chalk it all up to Wh*te S*premacy.
No, DnD can’t be saved. I’ve got enough 5e books and they got increasingly woke as they went on. A Dragonlance campaign with no mention of Raislin, Carmen, Tanis, etc? Nope, got to replace them with a diverse group of nobodies riding their coattails then burying their existence. WoC won’t see another dime from me.
When you get down to it, the original creators of D&D are being derided for having a genuine if misguided appreciation of other cultures and mythologies instead of having the money to hire a host of consultancy groups and sensitivity readers. Classism at its finest.
I wouldn't say misguided given the point wasn't to 100% accurate. It was to having interesting things where you go "Hey I know that thing" or "I've seen something about that before" and not to recreate the real world.
@TrackMediaOnly aye, it was difficult to think of which word to use there to describe, like they wouldn't have had first hand knowledge of the cultures they were reflecting in games.
Here's how DnD can be saved... you're the DM, you make rule changes for your table, people who want to play it will play... if you want to institute dnd 5e or 4e or 3e for character creation stats, you can.. you just have to put in the work to do it.
The only silver lining to this book is that its so damn overt in all of this that it helps me feel a bit less like a hermit conspiracy theorist the last few years. The worst part is I dont think WOTC believes in any of what they are doing at all beyond a bottom line and social media interactions. Its not out of genuine concern. Yes they hire fanatics in a valut tech esq way but at the top WOTC is an ultra predatory corporation and has been since they got Magic Money. What has hurt the most is being in communities with Gary's kids, old TSR artists and Dragon staff etc. They are people who I talk with about AD&D weekly along with the rest of our 1st ed community. They are hurting and it's apparent. The heroes of my childhood so to speak, who led me to my career and who made a game that literally saved my life years ago. When I was young, playing AD&D was a thing you kept secret, it was the place where all the misc social group kids found a place. We didn't need to agree politically, we didn't have to be friends really, we didn't even have to really like you. If you played and kept to the table rules you were welcome at the table no questions asked. You were one of us and nothing else mattered. Even if we had nothing to do with each other in real life, we had each others backs at the table or out in the world. Anyone was welcome at the table and it was a bond we all shared that carried through. Its disingenuous of wotc to play this tactic at all, and their point of view is certainly making the community smaller and more polarized by the day, it's not bringing more people to the table. Instead of the old guard passing on the torch to the new generation and finding common ground in the game we all love, they have split the game entirely with the older players keeping to themselves and from this book etc. its now pretty damn clear its because we don't have a place in the modern game at all. They don't want to discuss points of view, they don't want our money, they just want anyone who remembers how this all really was and how WOTC got where they are now. I think saying they want to erase the reality of the history of D&D certainly is true and they want us players to be erased too. They are also cowards and unwilling to allow any counterpoint at all so have set it up that any criticism of mechanics or content will instantly set off Trevor's Axiom of Trolling with B chiming in an inflammatory way to get guy C to defend guy A, which gets guys D-Z to hop on too. There will never be a constructive discussion about the game itself in these situations but it sure does magnify the reach of their marketing. its all just heartbreaking to be honest.
5 years ago I became severely disabled due to an accident I had me being a disabled man I find it extremely offensive that companies try to glorify this condition there's nothing cool about this I understand advocating but there are better places to do it than in video games and in movies

DnD 3.5 was the best edition, Wizards hit gold as soon as they were acquired by Hasbro in 2000 but have been falling off ever since. Also Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms is a legend.

Great thing about dnd, house rules always win. Internet is also full of PDF's you can get of the books. Just because the manual says that orcs are exactly the same as Elves, or you get a +2 non binary bonus, doesn't mean you as dungeon master have to allow it.
I'm a Messianic Jew, and I play D&D with an Arab guy from Saudi Arabia. We both love the same kinds of stories. Our characters do things like eating pork, even though neither of us eat pork in real life. Neither of us find that offensive, because it's the character living in a fantasy world.
Same for me been playing D&D all my life and it is just fun to have my character do think I would never do in real life. It's pure escapism (something that harder to find now a days)

Vishnu has a stat block. Zeus has a stat block. Thor has a stat block. Everyone has a stat block in case a dungeon master wants a balanced way of using them in their campaign. Granted, there's a murderhobo saying "if it has a stat block, I can kill it" and that is an individual thing.
But Lord Vishnu is still worshipped by a large number of people, but thor and zeus are not, so even if they want to keep him as a Character, he should have no stat block and be a power akin to Aio Or higher or best of all be a substitute name for the DM.

The great thing about DnD is that it has a large degree of flexibility in the storytelling and gameplay. When we play we don't have to acknowledge any changes that Wizards of the coast make to it and can continue to play it the way we always have. Just don't bother buying any of their new books and use the stuff you like that the fanbase makes and support those individuals. Your Harry Potter recast theory seems pretty accurate. I’ve done the same for the Lego Bionicle franchise: If that were rebooted today, Gali would be the leader, Tahu would be a woman, Kopaka would be autistic, and Lewa and Pohatu would be gay. But there’s one thing making this unlikely: Lego are Danish. The Danes are comparatively based. Even though Lego caved in to the “cultural appropriation” Maōri lawsuit back in the day - but that was in the early 2000s, long before any wokester had even come up with the term “cultural appropriation”.

Like most things, there are multiple reasons why things happen, not just one uber-simple explanation.
As an old TTRPG player who played with black people in the late 70s, here are the real reasons why they didn't play much D&D:
1) Less exposure: fantasy movies weren't mainstream, there was almost no anime, no internet, barely any videogames, and the only people interested in playing "fantasy" were people who actively read fantasy novels (which had just started to grow in popularity). While some black men got exposed to gaming in the military, fewer black people were going to college, which was the other place RPGs spread by word of mouth. Black people didn't grow up with fantasy, so they weren't interested in playing a game that simulated fantasy.
2) Smaller demographic: Black people are only 10% of the US population, and in the places the games started (Wisconsin/Minnesota), they are even smaller minorities. They made up even less of the player base. Once the game spread to the coasts, you started to see some people get into it, but it was still a smaller number. Good luck being a black teen looking for other black teens to play the weird "elf" game with...
3) Cultural disinterest: Per #1, black people didn't like Fantasy very much. They liked music, movies, comedy and sports (guys played a lot of sports). If you're a black male teen, you played basketball to socialize with your friends, get fit, and impress girls (being cool was a higher priority culturally, than being a scrawny fantasy nerd). Most hardcore black boardgamers played things like Chess, not esoteric wargames.
4) It wasn't cool: fantasy and nerd chic culture didn't exist. It was stigmatized, and you got bullied for it. Often, people kept their interest secret to avoid this.
5) Religion: black people were much more religious (esp. Baptist or Pentecostal) and there was a Satanic Panic going on -- D&D was considered evil by fundamentalists, and it was harder for black kids to participate without getting discriminated against -- by other black people.
6) Cost: game books cost about the same back then: adjusted for inflation, $150 for 3 game books, extra for dice, and other accessories, plus you had to find other people who were into playing. Black teens from less well off families had a harder time affording the game. If you asked your mom for books for Christmas, she'd shake her head, and give you baseball or basketball equipment, and tell you to go outside and play a big group game with your friends that only required a free playground and one ball. Maybe they'd invest in football equipment, to help get a sports scholarship for college. Not D&D books -- no way.
Of course, you could just chalk it all up to Wh*te S*premacy.
No, DnD can’t be saved. I’ve got enough 5e books and they got increasingly woke as they went on. A Dragonlance campaign with no mention of Raislin, Carmen, Tanis, etc? Nope, got to replace them with a diverse group of nobodies riding their coattails then burying their existence. WoC won’t see another dime from me.

When you get down to it, the original creators of D&D are being derided for having a genuine if misguided appreciation of other cultures and mythologies instead of having the money to hire a host of consultancy groups and sensitivity readers. Classism at its finest.
I wouldn't say misguided given the point wasn't to 100% accurate. It was to having interesting things where you go "Hey I know that thing" or "I've seen something about that before" and not to recreate the real world.

Here's how DnD can be saved... you're the DM, you make rule changes for your table, people who want to play it will play... if you want to institute dnd 5e or 4e or 3e for character creation stats, you can.. you just have to put in the work to do it.
The only silver lining to this book is that its so damn overt in all of this that it helps me feel a bit less like a hermit conspiracy theorist the last few years. The worst part is I dont think WOTC believes in any of what they are doing at all beyond a bottom line and social media interactions. Its not out of genuine concern. Yes they hire fanatics in a valut tech esq way but at the top WOTC is an ultra predatory corporation and has been since they got Magic Money. What has hurt the most is being in communities with Gary's kids, old TSR artists and Dragon staff etc. They are people who I talk with about AD&D weekly along with the rest of our 1st ed community. They are hurting and it's apparent. The heroes of my childhood so to speak, who led me to my career and who made a game that literally saved my life years ago. When I was young, playing AD&D was a thing you kept secret, it was the place where all the misc social group kids found a place. We didn't need to agree politically, we didn't have to be friends really, we didn't even have to really like you. If you played and kept to the table rules you were welcome at the table no questions asked. You were one of us and nothing else mattered. Even if we had nothing to do with each other in real life, we had each others backs at the table or out in the world. Anyone was welcome at the table and it was a bond we all shared that carried through. Its disingenuous of wotc to play this tactic at all, and their point of view is certainly making the community smaller and more polarized by the day, it's not bringing more people to the table. Instead of the old guard passing on the torch to the new generation and finding common ground in the game we all love, they have split the game entirely with the older players keeping to themselves and from this book etc. its now pretty damn clear its because we don't have a place in the modern game at all. They don't want to discuss points of view, they don't want our money, they just want anyone who remembers how this all really was and how WOTC got where they are now. I think saying they want to erase the reality of the history of D&D certainly is true and they want us players to be erased too. They are also cowards and unwilling to allow any counterpoint at all so have set it up that any criticism of mechanics or content will instantly set off Trevor's Axiom of Trolling with B chiming in an inflammatory way to get guy C to defend guy A, which gets guys D-Z to hop on too. There will never be a constructive discussion about the game itself in these situations but it sure does magnify the reach of their marketing. its all just heartbreaking to be honest.
5 years ago I became severely disabled due to an accident I had me being a disabled man I find it extremely offensive that companies try to glorify this condition there's nothing cool about this I understand advocating but there are better places to do it than in video games and in movies

DnD 3.5 was the best edition, Wizards hit gold as soon as they were acquired by Hasbro in 2000 but have been falling off ever since. Also Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms is a legend.
Baldur's Gate 3 was an amazing game. Woke Lunatics had to ruin everything.

I felt that the future of DnD was in question when Wizards bought them in the first place. Something about them just never seeemed right.
