I worked at many of these rides as an employee of Six Flags. Working at the Free Fall in the 90s, one could easily collect twenty to thirty dollars in change every night after closing.
I lived up the street from Six Flags in '84, I and my friends would sneak in all the time. We would go in through the woods by the Mind bender or one friend that had a pass would go in then come right back out and get stamped with UV ink so they could go back in. We would meet him in the restroom at the entrance and he would transfer the ink from his wrist to ours so we could go in at the entrance. We had a lot of friends that worked there too. We always got our food and drinks free! We had one friend that worked at the gift shop, we would go in and load up on anything we wanted! At the time I was young and it was the 80s so I didn't think about if it was right or wrong then. I saw the Go Gos there, Red Rocker, and best of all, Night Ranger. I met a lot of girls there too, a lot! Well, I was cute then. Pretty good memories at Six flags.
Lucky! As a kid we would drive up to Atlanta from my hometown of Macon and have a blast at SFOG. I graduated hs in 1986 and still remember seeing Mister Mister in concert there
Thank you for posting this. These were my best years as a kid. I remeber every nuance and feel of all those rides. Slushies, pizza, running from one ride to another and chasing girls with puppy love. My absolute best times in life.
My mom is from Atlanta and all of her family lives there. I remember my aunt’s and my mom taking me to six flags OG every summer in the 80’s when I was a kid. I rode Free Fall the first year it was put in, scared the shit outta me. Had to be talked into it. I remember the mind bender when it was brown and riding the Georgia Cyclone when it was the new ride. That park might as well have been Disney World to me and I had some great times there.
Remember when the splash from Splashwater Falls went much farther and would completely soak everyone on the bridge. Now it barely gets to it and barely gets you wet. I don't know why there has been a change with this.
Christ Follower they reduced water level cause of drought conditions after the park flooded. had to keep as much water in the ride pool as could for conservation efforts.
Continued: Other rides no longer at SFOG... The Great Gasp (it and Looping Starship were replaced by Goliath), The Great Six Flags Air Racer (replaced by Acrophobia), and Flying Dutchman (replaced by Batman: The Ride). Ninja later replaced Z-Force... just like Dare Devil Dive later replaced Free Fall...and Superman: Ultimate Flight replaced Viper. Log Jamboree, Thunder River, Monster Mansion (former Monster Plantaiton), and Mine Train are still there too. This bring back memories.
Awesome video, thanks for uploading it. My first visit to SFOG was in 87, and we went annually for years afterward. I was too chicken to ride the Z-Force, but I miss the Starship and even the FreeFall.
Wow, I see rides like The Wheelie (now removed to make way for SkyScreamer) the Looping Starship, the FreeFall, and Splash Water Falls (now standing but not operating)
lol, wasn't the looping starship and super chevy show in that area too? That McD's was ridiculous, pricier than today's fast food outside of a theme park and that was in the 80's and 90's, lol, think they were on par with Five Guys prices today!!
That flipping spaceship can eat one. Tried that ride in my mid teens and the upper body harness didn't lock and my remaining support was a bar that went between my legs with a cushion that was holding my waist and upper legs in place. Needless to say I had to wrap my legs around the bar and curl my arms under it to hold on. Loathe that ride.
The best part of my teen years were spent here in the 80's. My girlfriend (now wife) would get a seasons pass and come when the park opened and stay for the fireworks at midnight. Tried going back a few times recently but just doesn't have the same appeal.
Scream Machine is a historical roller coaster and likely can't be knocked down. Splash water falls will be replaced by a nother rollercoaster. Probably an S&S free spin. Mind bender will probably be there forever. The same with the Mine Train.
Just go to Six Flags Saint Louis and ride the Screaming Eagle, Ninja, Log Flume, Mine Train, and Thunder River. Was just there yesterday and aside from the ppl on their phones, those ride were just like it used to be in the 80's.
The z force was an awesome coaster but I think they had some complaints of neck injuries. I think that's why they retired it so early. The viper was also a great ride. I think the Ninja is now standing where the z force was in the 80's.
Andy Ballard that's correct! Z-Force was my first coaster and when Ninja replaced it I wasn't happy about it. As long as they keep the Monster Plantation!
@Matt Beeman "Only" one child died on that ride in 1989. He was 11 years old and the autopsy was inconclusive b/c I don't think there was an apparent injury. People heard about it and the legend grew that a few people had died on the Z-Force. I do remember people would say the ride made there neck hurt (just like the Ninja). They ended up removing it not even a year later after that kids passing giving it only a two year run.
Jahmal Drummond I remember Z Force and walking by it and saying, nope. Only ride in the park I wouldn’t ride. I just didn’t have a desire to get on it. Ninja is cool though. I rode it when it was new
I remember all those rides and even the rides before the 80's. Just say I first visited six flags a couple yrs after they opened and the tickets were $5.50 for kids and $6.50 for adults...🤣
Correction: The Viper (which you say was Greased Lightning) was actually the Tidal Wave from Six Flags Great America. It came to SFOG in 1994 the year after I visited SFGA because they were breaking ground for the first Batman coaster. I participated in the work to create the Viper experience.
So you worked for Time Warner at one point? What were some Six Flags experiences that never got off the ground? I heard GAdv was gonna get a ride based on the movie Contact... that probably ended up being Cyborg Cyber Spin!

Also brb, Goliath is better than scream machine and kind of better than mindbender.
Oh ye of little brains (and a backbone) FreeFall has Acrophobia beat hands down. Looping Starship was the shit. Haven't rode the Skyscreamer yet but the Wheelie was great. And the ride in THIS video IS GREASED LIGHTNING, those who know The Viper know that it is not in this video.

i hate the wheelie
Good riddance to the Looping Starship
Awwwww..... was it too much for you little man ?? 😆😆😆 lol
hi
The Z-Force Sucked!
Rides aren’t that good at six flags over Georgia now
Acrophobia is a lot better than free fall, skyscreamer is a lot better than wheelie, the joker superloop is a lot better than the starship, splash water falls is broken, it’s not greezed lightning it’s called viper, mindbender is dope at night, z-force was completely trash, if they mentioned the cyclone, the twisted (no pun attended) is better. Also brb, Goliath is better than scream machine and kind of better than mindbender.
Oh ye of little brains (and a backbone)
FreeFall has Acrophobia beat hands down.
Looping Starship was the shit.
Haven't rode the Skyscreamer yet but the Wheelie was great.
And the ride in THIS video IS GREASED LIGHTNING, those who know The Viper know that it is not in this video.
