it didn't hurt her career at all. nene's redesign is what saved her career. prior to the change she had no real identity and was far behind her genmates. her change unleashed her and nene skyrocketed from there
Yup, I didnt watched her when she debuted bc of the vtuber avatar, when she changed it I was more intrigued in her and eventually she became my favorite of her gen.
Nene herself actually stated that her 3D was delayed because of her Chinese inspired outfit. It’s even clipped and I totally saw it before. “Nene expresses frustration over 3d announcement” or something.
I do remember the old design, but as what was happening in JP was a bit foggy to me, when I saw her bear outfit, I just thought "Oh! She's a bear girl", and didn't know the Chinese issue until months later. To this day, I still think of her as a bear. UnBEARably cute!
Nene's mom did a great job with Nene's redesign, but when I look at the changes, outside of the clothes of course, they add so much to Nenechi's design For example, the color and shading of the first model's hair was too flat compared to other Vtubers, and the rigging of some things overlapped and moved weirdly. Still, I'm glad they didn't make a single change to Nenechi's face, Nishizawa 5mm's style is too cute (and she's cute too of course)
That whole Taiwan shenanigans was a horrible time for Coco and Haachama. Especially Haachama who felt that she was the reason Coco left, even though she most definitely wasn't the reason. Understandable that they changed it.
Flare also have a same chinese issue. Because of that, she change her Maskot from "Panda" to "Bird" with her old "Chinese Outfit" to "Elf with White Dress"
I remember it was officially stated Nene had made the decision herself, asking to have all references to China and Chinese culture stripped from her model and backstory, and the rumor was that it was done in solidarity woth Coco.
While not a complete redesign, Shion also discarded one of her outfits, which was a Chinese-style one. It was last seen in one of her backgrounds. Also, it's such a coincidence that both of Lack's HoloPro children both had redesigns because they, IIRC, weren't really satisfied with the old designs.
They got rid of that old design recently though? Or at least recently enough that it was far removed from the China antis drama. Feels a bit weird for that to be the main reason considering however much time later it took to retire her original design.

The PRC fallout will remain one of the most bizarre things I ever witnessed on here - of course it's a sensitive issue, but the amount of fans who just acted entirely in lockstep to demand grovelling apologies for just showing some analytics that included Taiwan just baffled me. I'm just glad Cover saw it for what it was and cut ties, it's hard to do for a young company to shut itself out of a huge market but they really made it work.
They don't see Taiwan as disputed, nobody does. Taiwan is a part of China. You can look it up via a Google search. "How many UN countries acknowledge Taiwan as an independent country?". The reason why the Chinese are mad is because the West has had a history of literally destroying China and pumping it full of drugs and the whole Taiwan narrative is clearly some astroturfing brought on to try to cause a revolution, because China was being aggressive with it's trade policy. 90% of the people bringing up Taiwan as an independent country has no idea what they are talking about. It would be as if China suddenly said the American South never lost the Civil War and started sending ICBMS to the southern states for them to protect their sovereignty. Most of the Hololive fans were not there when the incident happened. The Chinese were initially not that upset. When the stats scandal happened, most of the Chinese just wanted Cover to issue a correction. But what ended up happening was the worst PR move made in modern PR scandals ever Cover issued statements in Chinese indicating they were apologizing for the incident and banned Coco and Haachama. While also issuing a statement in English there was nothing happening here and Coco and Haachama are going on leave for a bit. It completely invalidated their apology and to assume nobody in China would be able to read English and tell the difference is insane. It only escalated from there because Coco felt she already did her time when she came back from her ban and didn't understand why they were still mad so she doubled down on everything, and it forced Cover's hand to back her up and the rest is history. This PR mistake that could have been easily fixed still haunts Cover to this day, not because of the Chinese fans, but because it now attracted the crowd who don't want Cover to have anything to do with China and will cause a ruckus like the Kobo stream.
Communism is a hell of drug. They have to act like that otherwise they could run afoul of the CCP. If you want to understand it read about similar situations from Soviet Russia. The book, The Gulag Archipelago, would be a good place to start.
Her new outfit looks like a dirndl, a traditionally bavarian clothing, and isekai anime often take place in bavaria inspired places, so i think its on purpose. I think Kiara had a proper dirndl outfit once

I think that the fact that she just walked out of a portal wearing Chinese clothes but being Japanese in every other aspect probably wasn't a good look, considering the history of the two countries. I'm sure the Taiwan drama was a tipping point, but Nene's original history and outfit was poorly thought out.
Most of chinese people are taught anti japanese culture, even right now they're blaming the japanese for the cooking oil crisis (it happened just a few days before I wrote this comment) Nene almost gave up back then, everyone had already given a 3D model but Nene was a cardboard cutout because her new model wasn't ready, she played it off as a joke but later confessed that it was really hard for her
I thought it was because she didn't like how it looked, the outfit made her look "cool" so she had to change personality to match the design but with her redesign she could be more "cute"
I think your analysis is a bit off here. Nene was not receiving much in the way off harassment from Chinese Anti's during this era. Her number's were bad during this time compared to other members of her gen and allot of it had to do with the "aru" persona not working for her, as she moved away from having the "aru" vocal tick her onstream personality also changed to more closely resemble the Nene we know today. Nene around the time of her debut is almost an entirely different persona to seal we know today. As her onstream persona changed to be more like current Nene her popularity also skyrocketed and her old design was just no longer a match for her and she got a redesign. loosing the "girl in Chinese clothing" moniker Imo has much more to do with her evolution as a streamer than it does backlash from anti's. after all if the Chinese aesthetic was working for her she would still be saying "Aru" at the end of all of her sentences like she used to.
Don't forget about her, now long abandoned, verbal tic: 'aru'. It's a stereotype of Chinese people speak Japanese. Kagura from Gintama is an example of it.
She couldn't keep it up anyways
Nene was HEAVILY inspired by Gintama as it is her favourite anime.

Verbal tic is a nice way to put gobi

I thought it was because she didn't like how it looked, the outfit made her look "cool" so she had to change personality to match the design but with her redesign she could be more "cute"
@@aemiliaj-score8000 The old outfit did highlight Flare's legs.
im pretty sure flare just changed it because of personal preference.
Winnie the Pooh can Whine and eat Poo
