    As a female part of our homestead team, this whole thing was touching. How Joel spoke about his wife, her role, what she has done for him, young women, the home, the farm, etc...I feel more women need this affirmation that farming, being a helpmate, a homemaker, a mother, mentor, teaching the ways, a canner, etc...I felt convicted on so many levels including rest❤️ I would love to be in all groups like these, to encourage, to share, to be community.

    His advice around the 40 min mark when he is talking about self care is something many of us need. We fill our life with distractions we think is giving us rest but really isn’t. That is why we feel so anxious about everything. We need to find a way to enjoy what we do so that we don’t face burnout.

    It still amazes me that there are people in the USA who are upset that you can be a farmer or homesteader and not be poor. I don't know how to properly state this, but it's like they think you must be stupid or poor or both to live on a farm or homestead. It's like they can't see a lifestyle that doesn't revolve around owning more than the "Jone's". The joy I get from working in my garden to grow my own food is such a deep peace that I never found in any of my regular jobs. Yes, it is work and no, I don't have to do it to have food. They just don't get that I do all of this work because it make me feel good, at peace and fulfilled.

    • @Ladygreencrochet
      @Ladygreencrochet 2 года назад +3

      People who believe farmers are poor are behind the times. But maybe all they’ve known are people who haven’t got enough vision to dream big and actually are poor.

    • @LedgemereHeritageFarm
      @LedgemereHeritageFarm 2 года назад +6

      Worse than that, the number of people who look down their noses at farmers. To succeed, a farmer has to be a business person, vet, breeder, mechanic, carpenter, plumber, electrician, weather man… you can’t be a moron and be a successful farmer. Farmers are no have more savvy than a lot of those turning up their noses…

    • @Ladygreencrochet

      Yes, I love watching Henry. I think he was so tuned in because he is so involved in the farm life. He gets attention from his family in a very nurturing way. I think involving a baby the way he’s been involved helps the baby to be all he can, rather than sitting him in front of tv with little human involvement.

    I think teaching your craft is a great resource for others and a person should receive compensation whether they teach through a book or a lecture or through hands on experience. Joel is a great teacher and I appreciate being able to learn from his experience. Kids miss it when they forget “old people” are living books of knowledge and experience. Many thanks…

    Thanks Ben for bringing up a really important question. I felt it was too lightly answered. It would be good to see a deep discussion on burnout with farming/homesteading/permaculture community worldwide. What are the common causes, and what support systems can be put in place.

    • @nctplarry
      @nctplarry 5 месяцев назад

      I agree 100% with what I THINK you were pointing out. There is no doubt that Joel is a highly respected person. However, from the blessing I have had of speaking to audiences, both small and large, around the world...I have learned that when somebody asks a question like Ben asked, I don't need to respond IMMEDIATELY with telling MY story! Rather, I would love for Joel to have asked Ben to expand upon what he meant by that question of burnout, how he would describe burnout, and maybe to give a few examples of how Ben has felt the sting of burnout and how he might have witnessed it in the lives of other homesteaders. THEN--and ONLY THEN--Joel could have responded with his story.
      I suppose I am too critical of speakers who are accustomed ot having throngs of people crowding around them, just waiting for some perceived crumb of wisdom to fall from the speaker's lips. Rather, I like to think about how Jesus responded to people who posed questions or situations to Him. I can't recall any recorded instance of when Jesus responded by making himself look like the final authority.
      My prayer has always been that God would remind me to become and remain humble. I have spoken to crowds of 28,000 in a faraway land, yet I tried very hard to not appear as the final authority. Rather, I would like to think that I have COACHED others into finding solutions--or paths to solutions--by some kind of beneficial interchange with others.
      So, in summation, I think Joel gave some stellar information/advice right at the end...but I wonder if Ben went home thinking that Joel had really answered his question.
      Overall, this was a good video...and I am confident that thousands who view it will take something wonderful or beneficial away from having watched the video. That's good!

    Husband says he loves the Farm as there is always something to do. It's also something that has so many different facets that he doesn't bore with it. From plowing snow and tending to the animals working getting firewood . To planning seeds and on to plowing the soil planting then haying and harvest . And the animals always need care but things pop up from babies to breeding to moving in paddocks. Add some woodworking fencing welding it's never ending and repetitive but changing and challenging all in minutes thru any given day.

We usually combined going sightseeing with traveling for a wedding or other family event, or to visit family in AZ once. I never did get to see the grand canyon, it had snowed 11 inches over night and the roads to it were closed, but I got to sit on petrified logs in the petrified forest, and some other things. I live in nw WI ( nearly same latitude as the Twin Cities ) and in recent years my husband and I have gone to some different parks and hikes to see waterfalls in WI, and the Superior shore since I love, love, love the sea-side feel. BTW anyone out there : I highly recommend the Morgan Falls waterfall as best one for a tall one ( you can actually see the whole thing, unlike the other, technically taller ones ) and the hike to it is pretty easy.. .

    Thanks for airing this to the general public. Joel Salatin, who is such a decent guy, has lots to offer about managing our lives as well as our chosen work life & also farming.
    I noticed young Henry was locked into watching Joe for quite a while there, as he was speaking. That degree of focus seems advanced for that age. I think maybe since Joe is so sincere, Henry could feel his emotions.
    Henry - and all those kids have been born into a very loving & sharing community, with an extended virtual community. They all seem to be smart, caring & well adjusted. There's nothing like being a part of such a group of hard working, decent & caring people. To see their support of each other - in very real ways is admirable.

    Nobody is speaking about anything new or ground breaking. Joel, and his dad went to the library and read the same books I did. LOL. BUT I love Joel, and he runs a viable, successful portfolio of enterprises. It’s great that he can combine his knowledge with amazing people skills and educate the public.
    I can relate a bit more to Gabe Brown and Rick Clark because they are farming regeneratively at scale like I am, but Joel is an amazing guy.

    We need to stop housing development's and start farming development's. And lurn to live off grid using Solar System's and other natural energy system's . You will save money and find out the power company increase there price each year, Solar System's are getting cheaper each year. So invest your money wisely.

      Keep your vision. Do a little more each day towards your dream. Since we can’t see the future, we can’t say that a situation will never happen. I’m living in a city. Loads of rules about doing things a certain way, including no farm animals. I choose to garden. We grow a lot of food and have flowers up front and mixed in with our produce. Even when I had no yard I used containers on my balcony. Some day I’d like to move to the country on a few acres and start a homestead. Please don’t give up. If you don’t maintain and grow your vision, you are correct, that’s that.

      @@Ladygreencrochet , thank you for your encouragement but my husband doesn’t even want me growing anything because he wants to do stuff during the summer like boating and camping and feels that a garden would get in the way. Long story.

    Joel is the best. Visited Polyface Farm twice during pandemic. Warm, charismatic, loves people, gift of gab, engaging storyteller, super approachable. If y’all have the chance to go on a tour, highly recommend it.
