You are overthinking it. Cast Heat Metal on yourself, you take no damage and anything that touches you takes that damage. Or allow yourself to be swallowed up and burn that Huge monster from within.
One thing that I think is important to keep in mind with Clerics is that every Cleric has everything it will ever need to be effective from the base class. The domain features can be completely ignored, and you're still a strong member of the party. This is wonderfully liberating, because that means you can choose your domain entirely on what sounds cool to play. Even if a feature adds no mechanical strength, if it's fun then it's still a viable option on a Cleric. All that said, the stingier your DM is with being able to buy gear, the more Forge shines. With the exception of some armors, just about all nonmagical adventuring gear (that includes at least some metal) falls under 100g. The fact that you can turn junk treasure items into useful equipment INSIDE the dungeon is pretty solid.
Great use for the Channel Divinity: Escaping a cell. Convert the metal bars or lock and hinges into anything else (like a weapon) and off you go. As long as you have an hour, you're never without a weapon!
Just last night, I started my first session with a lvl 3 forge cleric, and could've done exactly that The dm gave me a buddy to rescue me immediately, but still
the immunity to fire is so bad ass, just imagine standing in the middle of a fire ball/wall of fire or ambushing someone from a lava flow or a burning pyre, places no logical person would expect anyone to be hiding in. :P
The group I am currently running for has a Forge Domain cleric . From what I have seen it is a very strong build. With plenty of options. He is obsessed with making items with his channel power though. For the love of all that is holy..he tortured me as a DM by making a wagon...a small one. He used this early on to gather anything metal he found while travelling . Of course it slowed the group down, made a lot of noise and attracted unwanted attention from monsters!
Reminds me of a Neutral Evil Goliath Forge Cleric counterfeiter I built for an organized crime game. Especially considering how Artisan's Blessing can manipulate the local economy by converting large sums of metal from one to another or even to a large portion of non metal material, or even altering the fluidity of currencies by converting coins to coins of a higher or lower value, or foreign currency if you have coins to copy. Though my favorite little trick is that you can convert 100gp of scrap metal, including up to 1000lbs of iron, into 0.25³ in. of platinum (about the size of a bullion cube) that weighs 3.2 oz. A Bag of Holding can hold 2500 of said cubes without breaking.
My favorite class. I played a 2 year campaign as one. Even with 14 wisdom I still had fun. Suggestions: 1. Dwarf covers 2 martial weapons plus this sub class is definitely Morodin 🔥 . 2. Every time I leveled I wanted to multi class. I was always happy I never did. Do not multi class for meta reasons. Slowing down your spell level progression is not worth it. 3. I took heavy armor master at 4. If I rolled better initial stats I would suggest warcaster AND resilient CON. Every thing I casted was concentration. Nothing was more fun than front line tanking and as a bonus action rolling a 2d6 (aura of vitality) healing like a legit Frontline paladin. 4. Then your final form making a mech warrior with animate object and piloting was always my goal never got to do it though ended up casting dawn or what ever the 4d10 spell per round is called in the final game
I’m about to play as a forge cleric but instead of being a blacksmith I’m gonna be a chef all the fire stuff and the creating things matches cooking so ya know chef cleric also great video it’s gonna help a lot
Love my Forge Cleric. In our campaign trips to the one and only city are rare so being able to make any mundane weapon, studded leather, scale mail, and chain mail is pretty handy. We picked up a guide and he had on hide armor, an hour later he was wearing some scale mail I made. Will be starting off next session Fabricating some Plate Armor for myself.
Im playing it for a few sessions. Our DM is using the Witcher as a base for crafting. So: you kill a monster, you loot some kind of parts of it, and you can make it into a weapon/armor. For example. We killed a Mimic, pulled out al 40 teeth, and I made daggers and arrows from it, dealing acid damage. We killed a horror Pinocchio, took some premium wood material, his wires. With some extra iron, I made a crossbow from him, what hits +1 for the hit. Unfortunatelly my dice doesnt like me, but I love the beefy crafter role.
My character is a Half Giant (fire). His hometown was caught in the crosshairs of a terrible war, leading everyone to evacuate while he was on a trip away from the village. He is looking for his refugee pregnant wife, who he considers the world's greatest forge for creating his unborn child. I hope he finds her.
I love your videos so much! I'm horrendously curious about your decor behind you now. Also insanely curious about your recording/audio setup because it's very crisp, clear, and clean all around.
I'm very fond of Forge Cleric but ultimately I don't think it offers enough interesting - the spell list is concentration heavy, with even heat metal and animate objects (which I personally hate but again personal choice) not really worth using over the cleric standbys of bless or spiritual weapon. Add onto the fact that you basically have no channel divinity and you end up with Just Another Cleric, except this one has +2 AC. Oh and no martial weapons on a melee cleric.
Really enjoyed the video. For the life of me I cannot figure out how you propose to double dip at level 3. Everything I read on Heat Metal does damage to those in contact with what you are heating up. How do you actually do what you suggest at level 3? Sorry for the newb question
Play a Grappler Forge Cleric and drag enemies back and forth through you Wall of Fire while laughing maniacally, lol.

Warhammer makes perfect sense for the domain but sadly there's no Martial Weapon proficiency with the Forge cleric.

As weapons, my Forge Priest, a Firbolg, uses his Forge Hammer and Smithing Peen ( a reskinned Warhammer and Light Hammer respectively ).
