I'm French and can confirm the "secret track" is indeed French speech synths trying to pronounce Japanese. The word that is repeated is "Daijobu", roughly meaning "it's fine" I believe.
I took French in high school so I know a bit, let me know if it's any good: HON HON BAGUETTE CROISSANT OMELETTE AU FROMAGE S'IL VOUS PLAÎT EHH HON HON LE GRENOUILLE EHH LE BRITANN IS LE ROSBIF HON HON FOUX DU FAFA I also remember learning that proper nouns aren't capitalised in French, so saying "Australia" in the middle of a sentence makes it "australie", and "an Australian" becomes "australien(ne)". It also means "He's an Australian" becomes "Il n'est pas britannique, ne crachez pas dans sa nourriture." Am I correct on the proper noun part?
Katamari is such a fun game for kids, too! Reroll was SO eye opening for the 5 year old I babysat a few years ago. she loved it when they told us things like "your katamari is x number of a specific object". she ran around and measured a bunch of stuff after each level and would find something at that same size to get a better understanding. it was so cute!
Yes!! As a kid, I’d read the encyclopedia of things like it was gospel and just sit and think about stuff-literal stuff-for a long time. Katamari taught me to appreciate a bunch of mundane things ironically enough.
I played soooo much of We Love Katamari when I was a kid, I can absolutely see it having timeless appeal for kids. Just simple fun with an easily understandable premise.
There's one little aspect of the game that I don't think was covered in this video, and that was the Cosmos screen in We Love Katamari. At any time in the Select Meadow, you can walk off into the background and fly off planet into space. This is a way to view the sizes and time records of the different stars and planets you've made, have a shooting star showcase if you've managed to collect all of them, and a way to even view the records of the stars and constellations you can load in from the previous save data. I found this feature out by complete accident, and it was something I won't soon forget. I really liked the sight of just seeing the repaired Great Cosmos all at once, and i liked being able to fly to each planet and star for a closer look at their model even more. It was at that moment where I realized I was playing my favorite video game all those years ago.
Aw, thanks for sharing that. It is true I did not cover it, if I had more time I would have placed it in the "extra mile" section most likely - though I do show it in b-roll a few times (even the KD version, which is cute because it has a mouse cursor). Personally, I always found it really awkward to navigate so I never spent much time in it but it is very cool.
I normally just roll my eyes at the overuse of masterpiece, but on this occasion I've more to say. We Love Katamari lacks the artistic direction of Katamari Damacy, ergo it is not a masterpiece. It is a fun video game, but a demonstration of mastery it is not.
Oh man I already loved Katamari, but the little cousin animations between each "chapter" were so cute and well done. Overall one of the best katamari videos I've seen. Good job!
@@mchaosg incredibly so, I wish they'd hurry and drop Forever Reroll, I LOVE the multiple texture options for each board, made each individual one feel different somehow even if it was the exact same, added to the style and variety, and oddly I miss the plant watering stage, not sure why, I recall it annoying me at times but after not having it for years it just sounds fun, and Robo King was the sh*t 🥹
How in the name of the King does this video only have 1100 views?! Your work is absolutely remarkable, and I am thrilled someone with so much talent is on Team Katamari and helping spread the word. Hope you’re enjoying WLK Reroll!
The Katamari series always makes me feel nostalgic. When I was 13 I remember riding my bike to Gamestop, picking up Me & My Katamari for PSP, riding to this snow cone stand by my house for a Summertime sweet treat, then going home to play that game without a single care in the world.
This past year really has been the rise of the hour long video about Katamari huh? This is the third one I've seen, and I have to say it's the best one. You really capture the finer nuances of the gameplay and level design that alot of people brush over, which I appreciate. I'm really interested in what you'll have to say for some other games in the series, especial Me & My Katamari considering it's ranked so high despite it's poor reception. For me personally M&MK is probably the one I'm most nostalgic for even though Love is still my favorite by far.
Thank you, that's very kind! I enjoyed zinnbuster's video along with Rewind Arcade's retrospective too, assuming we're talking about the same video essays... Something about my personal ranking is that I'm factoring in more than just "quantity", a lot of it also has to do with presentation, how the game makes me feel and how much I've played the game. I love the PSP, it's my favorite handheld and I played MMK an astronomic amount. It's a very ambitious, near console experience that was released portably (in late 2005!) and I don't think a lot of people take that into consideration. Does that mean it's got more to offer than the later entries? No, but it has a lot more heart and personality. It feels like the game that got the WLK vibe "right". Anyways, I'd love to make a video diving into that deeper sometime but I do recognize it's also a personal bias.
@@mchaosg after hearing about this game for a decade and this being my first exposure. A. Im 100% playing the series B. Hearing your love for the series has me praying for a deeper dive into things
The fact We ❤ Katamari was made to be soo good that nothing after it would top it (aside from maybe Forever as a tribiut game), and knowing Keita Takahashi's background as an artist, goes to show this was the true final game.
In many ways, it's true. KF is definitely the better game (content wise), but as an experience I truly believe we peaked at WLK. Future games reach heights in other areas, but fall behind in others.
@@no_fishman9669 They're all good games, just not as great. MMK would benefit from having reworked controls, it's the game's biggest flaw. BK and TMK had their content split up into paid DLC, so it would be nice if they were all worked into the main game instead.
@@mchaosg That is a fair point actually, Touch My Katamari could especially use a reroll. (Cuz holy hell the King there looks like a sleep paralasis demon)
@@no_fishman9669 At the very least I want Katamari Forever getting the Rerolled treatment solely because of the final level where you must roll up the universe. Best Katamari level ever IMO. Plus Robo-King's hilarious.
27:42 YES! This is why the king is one of my favourite characters in any videogame, no actual voices, looks like Freddie Mercury, and talks in dj scratches. Flippin awesome.
The acapella cover of _Katamari on the Rocks_ is still one of my favourite pieces of music of all time. The guy went full ham on it, and the result was a masterpiece that I still regularly play to this day.
Playing we love katamari on switch rn seeing this video talking more about it in detail is nice makes me wanna continue playing it more and more. I loved that katamari damacy reroll is the first official release in europe too so I wasnt able to play it for years when i realised that was the problem. I love this series so much its been with me since the early internet days and thanks to game grumps for playing them in the first place.
I completely forgot about the PS2 demo disc. I play those demo stages so many times and was finally lucky enough to play the game in high school. Terrific video!
When the 1st Katamari game introduced itself to the world, the sequel finalized everything. Even to this day i fondly remember this franchise, especially the said sequel WLK for how unique and wonderful it is
1:42:17!!!! We are moved to tears by the sheer size of this thing. This is so incredible! Happy, happy, so happy. We want to turn it into a star right now!

Similar to most people, my main experience with this series has been playing the first game and watching some gameplay of some of the other games. I love your retrospective on not just the first two games, but on each level, thematics and music. I would love to hear your thoughts on the other games in the series in a similar style to this video
I see a lot of people praising how this video is scripted and narrated, but I think it's also amazing how well-edited this is. Doing all of that keyframing over an hour and forty minute long video is not easy, so hats off to you for making this fantastic video essay engaging! I haven't been able to stop thinking about the Burger King story for the past few days.
Thank you! I try to always match what's on screen to be relevant to what I'm saying, so I appreciate that it goes noticed when it does. That said, I know many people will just throw this on as background noise so sometimes I wonder if I'm just creating more work for myself 😅
We love Katamari is one of my favorite games ever when they announced the remake I couldn’t believe it. I’d love another long form video like this for the other games this was great
This is my favorite review of Katamari, you're an excellent RUclipsr! Please make more content like this. This is your first video I watched and I loved every second of it.
I watched this entire video while cleaning the house and stuff just to realize at the end that you're an independent creator with a considerable small amout of subscribers and views overall and to that I gotta say... I am so impressed and delighted by the quality of every single bit of this video. The structure and narration is on point and easy to follow and track back. The visuals as well as soundwork are impeccable, with a clean microphone quality and well handled levels of volume for all the layers. The sheer amount of polish you out into this video makes it by far probably the best in a Retrospective/ Commentary video I've seen on the 8 years I've been consuming youtube so far, maintaining a super high level of quality all through and while being biased on some parts, you being aware of it and even noting how it may affect the final product, it became a non issue. I want to congratulate you on this Piece of work you pulled out 2 months ago as of posting this comment. Guaranteed Subscription and Like from my part. Outstanding work!
Man, that is easily the nicest comment I've ever received on this channel, I'm honestly taken back by it...thank you so much! I'm glad my hard work went noticed, that really means a lot! When making a video like this, it's a 4+ month slog of trusting yourself. The point when you decide it's "done" is always so stressful, especially at this length as I'll watch each rerender and make notes of small corrections...the time really adds up! So again, thank you.
@@mchaosg Eyy no problem my guy, I really mean it when I say this is the most well produced video I've seen in all departments of it on this genre of videos and, I got too entangled with the technical stuff on the original comment that I forgot to say that, I hope, greatly even, that your channel blows up sooner than later because I want this quality of content to spread more. If a channel like yours can expand and be seen by many, it can really set a precedent and a reference point for aspiring content creators and even youtubers who already have time and recognition. Once again, you have produced a wonderful thing here and I'm here for it!
This video is such a love letter to katamari, it made me redownload damacy, and now I’m gonna get the sequel on switch bc of your high praise, I was going “ooooo ahhhhh” the whole time seeing ur clips from the sequel
I had no idea katamari forever existed till I happened to take a look on the Xbox 360 store a couple months ago, it has to be the greatest katamari experience of my life
Watching this video after finishing we love katamari yesterday was so nice, you dive incredibly deep into what makes each of these games fun experiences, and what makes the sequel such a banger, you did an excellent job exploring these games and it feels criminal that the view count is so low You also have an insane amount of willpower to do the million roses mission lmao
Definitely one of the best videos covering Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari on the whole internet, I can tell you that much. Outstanding work here!
I got my PS3 from my Friend that he didn’t use it anymore. So I Brought both Katamari Forever and Purchased the digital Version of We Love Katamari Reroll on PS5. What a Great month for me and any of you Katamari Fans!
this is my comfort video. i absolutely love how you explain and edit, all while still being lowkey and not being too overstimulating. this is such a good video to watch when i'm feeling like rewatching something i've watched before a few times. cheers dude, keep up the good work!
I really appreciate you saying that, I've watched all kinds of video essays on this platform and whenever I get one that's really loud/trying to be edgy/self defeating I just get turned off. No disrespect to those kinds of content creators because making videos is a lot of work - but it's just not for me. Sometimes I worry I come off as boring, but I don't want to force humor either so it's a relief to know it goes appreciated. Thank you!
i absolutely agree with you on that. there are a few creators that i think do some very over the top editing but it turns out well (polygon donut comes to mind), but i also just really enjoy your style too! your tone of voice and how you read things off is very dynamic too, which i think helps a lot!! your jokes are subtle yet get a chuckle out of me as well. you do a good job man, i'm so glad to have stumbled across your channel!! you are absolutely welcome!!!
I need more videos like this. I loved your aproach and how many details you gave for every aspect of these games. Just had We ♥ Katamari for a few days and I liked it a lot, but didn't know there were so many changes in courses with satelites. Damn, I didn't even know the coop feature! Now I'll have to replay it completely with my bf hehe.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's a perfect couples game too, especially since you have to work together so it typically boils down to bossing each other around lol
This is such a great video, you go over all the elements of the games, aknowledging what makes them special and what makes the games enjoyable... This is jsut a really REALLY good video essay!
this video is so damn good, i cant believe you only have 6k subs! I'm patiently awaiting your videos on the other katamari games (assuming youre going to make more)
For curious nerds like me, during the Sumo level, the Japanese names aren't actually the Sumo wrestlers' names, but rather refer to one of the 4 titles earned at the highest levels of the sport. Komubusi is the #4 ranking, Sekiwake is #3, #2 is called an Ōzeki, and finally, the best Sumo wrestlers in the world are given the rank of Yokozuna. This rank is a lifetime role, remaining titled Yokozuna even after retirement. Also, there can be periods with either multiple Yokozuna at once, or none at all. There have been a mere 73 Yokozuna in the history of the sport, and there are a few Ōzeki hopefuls with Yokozuna in sight. Fantasy Sumo is totally a thing, and it's an awesome way to get your toes wet with your friends when learning the sport!
@@mchaosg Thanks! And if you aren't already working on another one with the Katamari sequels, I would totally upvote the idea!👍🏽 And I subbed to see the other stuff you make, too!🤙🏽 Quality content!!
I really enjoyed this video! I appreciate your in-depth analysis on both games and your passion for We ❤ Katamari is infectious! Admittedly, I still have a bias towards Damacy over We ❤ Katamari. It was the first I played (back in 2017) but beyond that, it just felt more impactful and memorable to me despite We ❤'s greater number of content and refinement of Damacy's ideas; plus, it just felt like Damacy was more.....grounded and focused (and thus easier to engage with) compared to We ❤, if that makes sense? I'll try to clarify: In Damacy, everything you do in game (even though it is the vanilla "fast and large as possible" approach) felt like a natural progression of scale and challenge, right up to your greatest task of creating the moon. Basic? Sure, but it meant that each new challenge organically flowed into the next one up to the end. Meanwhile, in We ❤, there's more to do and each stage is more varied in what you are tasked to, but imo, it comes at a cost, mainly that of losing focus and not having that natural sense of escalation when it feels all over the place. But, all that said, your video has definitely given me some food for thought in appreciating We ❤ more as a sequel that elevates and improves on what Damacy was! Again, your in-depth analysis on its design and your obvious passion for it makes it worth appreciating more. So, thank you for this!
I appreciate you giving the time and sharing your thoughts, your perspective makes sense to me - it all boils down to what you like more and at the end of the day, both games are a lot of fun!
This is the quality of editing I expect from a channel with hundreds of thousands of subscribers, not less than 10k, you absolutely deserve more attention on this platform.
@@mchaosg I mean, looking at your back catalogue of videos it seems like these highly edited essays are more of a new focus for you, and you are really really good at it, so if you just keep plugging away you will get and audience. "If you build it, they will come."
This video is so incredibly well put together, and a very entertaining watch! So much so that seeing how many views it has currently really surprised me... For a video of this quality i expected there would be many, many more! Such an underrated channel. Awesome job!!
We ♥Katamari was one of my favorite childhood games and I still love it to this day, even my mother was enraptured by it back in the day. What an incredible series.
@@mitchellbenbrook2041 It was ahead of it's time, pioneering in a scene that didn't really exist yet so the audience was small. These days it should be doing a lot better. Also, love that your mom liked it! Gamer moms are awesome.
Thanks for watching! Objectively speaking, Katamari Forever IS the better game. However my ranking is not limited to content, but the experience itself and how a game makes me feel.
Such a simple concept for a game but so much fun. I have memories playing the original on my PS2 back in college just hanging out listening to the funky tunes
I remember when I learned We Love Katamari was a sequel (for context, I was a dyslexic 4 year old who didn't read anything in video games when the game came out, and that stuck for a long time) and then realized, most people played the first game and were talking about how much they loved that game, not the one I had played, so I had Katamari Damacy hyped up for like a decade, and then Reroll came out and I'm like "maybe I'm biased, but this game isn't as good" and don't get me wrong, It's a good game. But I was surprised I had literally only heard one person ever talk about We Love Karamari until the remake came out, and it was a youtuber playing a later game in the series, which is pretty much the only person I've heard talk about any of the later games as well... It's crazy that people fell in love with such an clunky version of the game and didn't bother to get the next game
wlk is by far my favorite game in the katamari series, i think its a phenomenal sequel that takes all the rough edges of damacy and smooths them out, refines it, and adds so much more on top of that. my biggest issue with it, however, is when youre going for 100%, specifically getting all the cousins. only one cousin appears per playthrough of a level, so youll end up replaying the same stages up to 4 times, which is a real drag. i will say though, it does make for an unforgettable experience going for 100%. you just sorta zone out for an afternoon, replaying as large as possible 10 four different times, its almost kinda zen, even though it gets a bit monotonous at times. besides that though, this video perfectly expresses my feelings on damacy and wlk, this is really well done :]
Replaying levels never bothered me because I've always enjoyed the mentality of "I can do better this time!", but for those that get their fill after completing it once I can see why it would get stale... Thanks for watching!
this was an EXCELLENT video. i recently played we love katamari reroll and have been hooked, and this video is a great explanation of everything that i adored about the game. praying that we get the reroll treatment for future katamari games, or even better, a brand new entry into the series.
There was something fairly recent where they showed off cousins from MMK/BK/KF in the new art style, which makes me think at the minimum, they're not done with the series. I would love to see them make a new entry, as remastering KF/BK is a little redundant since they're HD already...but I would still buy it anyways lol MMK HD would be a different story, that game would benefit from better controls but it was designed with handheld limitations in mind so I think they would have to do a lot more work than the first two games. Not saying it's impossible, just not sure if it's worth the investment to Namco.
my first time playing a katamari game was actually on my first cell phone! i can't remember what the game was titled, but a demo for it came pre-loaded on my pantech touch. i was in middle school at the time, and i was very intrigued by it. when my sister found the psp game (again, the title slips my mind... it's been a while!) at a gamestop, i finally got the chance to play a full version, and i absolutely fell in love. the series, and in particular the prince, hold a very special place in my heart! this video is so wonderful, i can feel your adoration for the series in every minute, and i love that you touched on every level and every song and every everything! the attention to detail in the series really makes it shine, and you captured it very well!!
There was a lot of mobile Katamari games, surprisingly - but they all feel a little uninspired compared to the main series titles. It's cool it eventually led you to playing Me & My Katamari though, that games is awesome and probably the one I've played the most (portable = car ride gaming). Thanks for watching and I appreciate your attention!
I maintain Cowbear is the hardest stage in the series, if just because of how many troll moves there are. Literally every spawn point has a trap. Yes, more than Fire and Ice in Forever. Also, Que Sera Sera > All other Katamari themes. You will convince me of nothing else.
I just heard that we♡katamari got a remaster and I got your video recommended! That was my first katamari game too! Such a wacky game, I used to play with my friends, we would pass the controller around and see who got a higher score xD
watched most of this video while currently halfway through we love katamari reroll and I have to agree with everything you said. The variety in we love's stages alone makes it surpass any of the constellation stages in damacy
I love this video. Not only is Katamari one of my favorite series, the sequel is my favorite, you even put PBR music in the background. I hope you make more
@@mchaosgI also have to say I really appreciate how many opinions we share about katamari it's really refreshing cause no one knows about most of the games. I've been playing though the PSP one lately
Those reviews at the end drove me insane! Growing up I found the original to be great, but it was lowkey a like eerie with the story 😂 We Love Katamari I’ve always thought to be the greatest entry of the series and I’m really glad lots of people agree. Stage variety is so important, the King’s past is a lot of fun, the dramatic increase in content. Also the sound track I think is also the best in the series! There’s just so much joy in the sequel that the original didn’t have. Thank you for the video! I was so so hyped when We Love Katamari Reroll Royal Reverie got announced.
Thanks for watching! The story is a little creepy in the original, it's not particularly interesting or funny but off-putting to look at. Maybe that resonates with some people, who knows... Did you end up playing WLK Reroll?
We ❤ Katamari is one of my favourite games of all time!!! The entire series is so weird, colourful, and fun! And the soundtracks are amazing!! It’s been over a decade since I first picked up KD and I still casually listen to them lol I was high af the first time I played KD. It blew my mind when the girl said “I feel it! I feel the cosmos!” I was like “BABY GIRL, YOU’RE 8, AND YOU CAN FEEL THE ENTIRE EXISTENCE OF REALITY???” 😂
We Love Katamari was my first too. And almost twenty years later, I still find myself popping it in and playing a bunch of levels from time to time. It's truly a timeless game. Didn't play the first game until about five or six years ago and I felt the same as you in some ways about it. The controls weren't as smooth and the way the levels were designed made for a bit of a rougher experience. Still really enjoy it though. I wasn't sure if I should get We Love Katamari Re-Reroll, but finding out you can get some of the best tracks from the original game as DLC is making me reconsider. Always wanted to have Moon and the Prince playing on one of WLK's levels.
Truly excellent video. Thank you for covering these two games so thoroughly, I've yet to see someone talk about this series in such a comprehensive way. I'm in the same position as you in having played we love way before the first game so almost all of our opinions coincide. Aside from this, your editing style and background music choice is amazing. Hadn't seen any of your videos before this but you've just earned a new fan, would love to see you cover the rest of the katamari series in the future! P.S. disco prince is also my favorite song from the game :)
Thank you for the kind words, this video was definitely something I wanted to make for a long time so I'm glad you enjoyed it! I would love the cover the rest of the series one day, especially Me & My Katamari and Touch My Katamari as I feel there's a lot to unpack for both. (Disco Prince supremacy!!)
I played We Love first and I totally agree -- it's the perfect sequel. All the new ideas are a breath of fresh air. One small thing that isn't in the video: if you fail on the campfire stage, one of the admonishments from the camper is, "Please roll with some common sense!" As if anything in Katamari is in the same universe as common sense!
You don't have to worry about IGN or other reviews during that era for We ❤ Katamari. A lot of reviewers had a brain disease and couldnt appreciate a novel concept wanting to improve on the base game and not immediately throw it all out the window for something different the developers werent interested in doing
I can't believe I found a video made specifically for me. We ♥Katamari always was (and still is) my favorite game growing up. I'm glad it is finally getting it's well-deserved appreciation for the MASTAPEECE that it truly is. Great video!!!!!! (Also, can we talk about how Sunbaked Savanna is just a medley of all the best Katamari Damacy songs made entirely out of animal noises? I love the cows singing Que Sera Sera.)
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'd love to talk about Sunbaked Savanna, like did you know it was the title screen music in the demo? Then it was later retrofitted for the PSP XMB preview.
Good points! I'm looking forward to when I finally play the sequel. At this time, I must say I'm biased towards the original because I've only played reroll and I start to cry every time I hear lonely rolling star. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
A few years ago during lockdowns I picked up Katamari Damacy Reroll because I vaguely remembered a friend from my childhood loving the game. Instantly, I fell in love with the game. Fast forward to November 2023, I picked up We Love Katamari Reroll: Royal Reverie. Not only did I fall in love with Katamari all over again. It became a freaking obsession. Everything I liked about the first game was now even better, and everything that frustrated me was tuned to be more manageable. I guarantee you, the critics who complained about We Love Katamari not being original enough, are the same people who will criticize the Pokémon games for not shaking up the formula enough each generation. And I bet if you asked them what they would do instead, they will either stare blankly without an answer or default to the model of [insert the generation they started with here].
That's awesome, I would love to forget my memory of this series and rediscover it again - but hearing it passively fills me with a similar joy too! Also yeah, I think critics back then just felt like they had to be negative because that was the cool thing to do back then...
This video is amazing, I watched the entire thing not knowing who you were and not knowing how many views it had, so when the video ended I expected at least 100k views. It's a matter of when, not if, you'll become really big
I always thought the sequel was such a massive improvement. The original was good but the sequel added so much. I think we ❤️ katamari was one of the most fun PS2 games
I'm a late Gen z and a little sheltered so I didn't grow up with any of the original katamaris but I've recently been playing both rerolls and I definitely enjoy we love katamari a lot more
Went looking for we love katamari reroll videos because the game released two days ago, and found this instead. Great work on the video, but it’s disappointing to see how everyone just forgot about the new game. There’s like 5 videos.
Katamari has always been small potatoes, I was hoping to aid with that but it's rough spreading the word. I did see some memes getting passed around on Twitter than had far more engagement than the actual official tweets from Namco, so that's something. Anyways, thanks for watching!
I played them in the order they released, so I have a bias toward the first game as my favorite. A big reason for that is the soundtrack; I liked the songs in We Love Katamari as well, but the lack of the old songs actually hurt the experience for me. With that said, if I'm fair, I do have to acknowledge that We Love Katamari is a knowing and brilliant realization of what was established in the original - it is the superior game. I make that statement purely as an intellectual acknowledgement...it's amazing how much nostalgia can do to sway our feelings. Great video. I look forward to seeing more from you!
I appreciate you saying that, I do think KD was more iconic in regards to it's music and it's cultural impact outside of Japan can't be understated! Truly amazing stuff.
I found your channel a few months ago through your Patapon retrospective. I assumed the channel was dead, but I subscribed anyway. Glad I did. This was a great vid for someone like me who knew nothing about the franchise outside of the original game, despite having absolutely adored the og for almost 2 decades. And now I'm going to have to get WLK Reroll when it comes out.
That's exactly the kind of response I was hoping to elicit, so I'm happy to hear! Anyways, no not a dead channel, feature length video essays are like a 4 month affair minimum. Any time I invest into RUclips is my own free time which I already juggle with my own life and full time job. Maybe making smaller videos would be healthier...
You'd be so much better off playing the original WLK (emulator w/ controller). The visuals in Reroll are _completely_ butchered, it really fucks up the entire vibe of the game.
playing the first katamari game on the ps2 or 3 (can’t remember) at like 10 was literally one of my oldest memories and i’ve been a die hard fan ever since. i didn’t even know about the second game being remastered!!! fucking loved this video
I like how in the first game, the king is portrayed as a mysterious, imposing, all powerful, likely ancient, space God that knows jack about earth, and in the second game he also acts ignorant of earth, but is more laid back, and its revealed that he grew up on earth. Like, he was a just kid that grew up. On earth. I feel like showing that a powerful, and now world famous, character, is actually a relatively normal person, like how the celebrities and famous creative we idolize are ultimately just people, fits the game's larger themes of fame and the effects of suddenly getting famous.
This was a great video! I got introduced to the first katamari game by a friend of mine who was playing it on twitch. I really liked what I was seeing but couldn't get a ps2 so I forgot about it. Until reroll was announced and I was so excited because I could finally play it. I really enjoyed it, and it was such a magical experience realizing that this is a new all-time favorite. I got we
We love Katamari was one of the first games I ever LOVED as a kid!! It remember that it was the one game my brother, sis, & I could all equally enjoy which makes it super dear to my heart 🥰 I still remember how fun and delicious the sweets level is and I still listen to the Katamari OSTs to this day!! Thanks so much for well researched vid, now I wanna get the game on switch and replay it all hehe
i'm also someone who had the experience of playing we love katamari first as a child, mostly because when i went to buy the first game at the store they only had the sequel available. happy accident though because to this day WLK is one of my favourite games of all time! really lovely video btw! i really liked how the transitions for each stage are gifs of the cousins you can roll up in that stage. super cute touch!!
Thank you for the kind words! Those gifs used to be featured on the official website at some point, thankfully people preserved them over the years! During the release of Touch My Katamari, they actually brought the gifs back and made new ones for the cousins featured in the game.
Fantastic video! To anyone with a Steam Deck, I cannot stress enough how AMAZING the trackpads are for this game. They legit make me a better player. I've messed up more than a few dashes in my time with sticks, either not executing them or sending myself way off course, but on the trackpads they're so simple to pull off. Set them to Joystick, not As Joystick, and I personally made it so that you do the quick 180 (Prince turn?) just by taking both thumbs off the pads for a moment. Feels perfect. I even set one of the back buttons to act as a turbo A button, to skip the King's blathering as I play 😜
i played katamari damacy reroll a few weeks after the direct that announced we love katamari reroll, it was on sale and i thought it looked cool. needless to say i immediately fell in love with the series and i bought we love katamari reroll as soon as i had the money to do so i have a soft spot for weird and interesting japanese ps2 games, and i totally agree that we love katamari took everything that makes the original great and improved upon it massively. theres SO much to do in that game and even though ive seen the credits, i can say for sure that i havent gotten everything its got to offer. theyre incredibly impressive little games, especially for the time they were originally released. unfortunately i am british and the first game didnt release on ps2 here, but i plan on getting a ps2 copy of we love katamari in time too.
That's awesome, glad to hear you fell in love with the series too! Europe definitely got the short end of the stick, but in these modern times that's less a problem with imports.
Wow, not only did we encounter this game series the same way, but I've encountered another upstate New Yorker!!! I'm not from Buffalo, but I am all too familiar with Mighty Taco. And Loganberry. Excellent video!
i still remember when i first played katamari, i was probably about 3 or 4 at the time and my neighbor from down the street let us borrow her copy of we love katamari. my sister and i were playing super monkey ball deluxe, and when i left the room, my sister swapped the disks. i have a hard time remembering things from my childhood, so im not sure why that stuck with me so much, but ive loved the series ever since. eventually my neighbor got an xbox instead so she let us keep her copy. i wish you could check playtime on ps2, its probably unholy lol it may be basic, but the prince has always been my favorite :)
I'm French and can confirm the "secret track" is indeed French speech synths trying to pronounce Japanese. The word that is repeated is "Daijobu", roughly meaning "it's fine" I believe.
Fascinating, thank you for sharing your insight!
Can confirm. It might also be saying “daijoubu desu” right before the “flashbang”, which means something like“I’m doing fine”
大丈夫、大丈夫。
I took French in high school so I know a bit, let me know if it's any good:
HON HON BAGUETTE CROISSANT OMELETTE AU FROMAGE S'IL VOUS PLAÎT EHH HON HON LE GRENOUILLE EHH LE BRITANN IS LE ROSBIF HON HON FOUX DU FAFA
I also remember learning that proper nouns aren't capitalised in French, so saying "Australia" in the middle of a sentence makes it "australie", and "an Australian" becomes "australien(ne)". It also means "He's an Australian" becomes "Il n'est pas britannique, ne crachez pas dans sa nourriture."
Am I correct on the proper noun part?

Katamari is such a fun game for kids, too! Reroll was SO eye opening for the 5 year old I babysat a few years ago. she loved it when they told us things like "your katamari is x number of a specific object". she ran around and measured a bunch of stuff after each level and would find something at that same size to get a better understanding. it was so cute!
That's adorable! I'm glad kids still can appreciate the smaller details the game has.
@@mchaosg😮
We Love Katamari IS a perfect sequel. A straight up masterpiece, I fear.
Could not agree more, it's in my top 5 games!
But do we love Katamari?
I normally just roll my eyes at the overuse of masterpiece, but on this occasion I've more to say. We Love Katamari lacks the artistic direction of Katamari Damacy, ergo it is not a masterpiece. It is a fun video game, but a demonstration of mastery it is not.
Katamari is just like a boss character for the pikmin series.

I’m so glad I have both series in my life

Oh man I already loved Katamari, but the little cousin animations between each "chapter" were so cute and well done. Overall one of the best katamari videos I've seen. Good job!
Thank you! To clarify I didn't make them, they're from the old Japanese website but they're very cute so I had to use them!

That is very flattering, thank you for the kind words. I'm currently rolling up a million roses, I should be done today!
The Katamari series always makes me feel nostalgic. When I was 13 I remember riding my bike to Gamestop, picking up Me & My Katamari for PSP, riding to this snow cone stand by my house for a Summertime sweet treat, then going home to play that game without a single care in the world.
I'm nostalgic just reading this!
Why the hell does this video not have more views? This is quality content!
It's getting there, this bombed hard when it premiered but it's really gaining momentum now...just like the Katamari!
A. Im 100% playing the series

@@mchaosg
Made me question if its even worth Rerolling the other games and not just make a lil level pack of all the best levels from the sequels.
@@no_fishman9669 They're all good games, just not as great. MMK would benefit from having reworked controls, it's the game's biggest flaw. BK and TMK had their content split up into paid DLC, so it would be nice if they were all worked into the main game instead.
@@mchaosg
That is a fair point actually, Touch My Katamari could especially use a reroll. (Cuz holy hell the King there looks like a sleep paralasis demon)

YES!

Oh cool, I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing, that's good trivia.

@@BoyProdigyX I appreciate that! I hope to deliver in the future.

@@mchaosg Nothing wrong with that, I was just putting in my two cents! :)
Thanks for watching!
the return of the tucker
this was an EXCELLENT video. i recently played we love katamari reroll and have been hooked, and this video is a great explanation of everything that i adored about the game. praying that we get the reroll treatment for future katamari games, or even better, a brand new entry into the series.
There was something fairly recent where they showed off cousins from MMK/BK/KF in the new art style, which makes me think at the minimum, they're not done with the series. I would love to see them make a new entry, as remastering KF/BK is a little redundant since they're HD already...but I would still buy it anyways lol
MMK HD would be a different story, that game would benefit from better controls but it was designed with handheld limitations in mind so I think they would have to do a lot more work than the first two games.
Cowbear is like a "I want to be the guy" experience, it's deliberately frustrating...
I just heard that we♡katamari got a remaster and I got your video recommended!
That was my first katamari game too!
Such a wacky game, I used to play with my friends, we would pass the controller around and see who got a higher score xD
Awesome, the algorithm is blessing me! Anyways, thanks for watching...that sounds like a good time to me!
watched most of this video while currently halfway through we love katamari reroll and I have to agree with everything you said. The variety in we love's stages alone makes it surpass any of the constellation stages in damacy
I love the Munchables music in the background. I haven't heard it in years now. Great video!
Fantastic soundtrack, I'm glad my friend recommended the OST to me...I keep listening to it!
I played We
I definitely play this game every other year too, it's too good not to!
I love this video. Not only is Katamari one of my favorite series, the sequel is my favorite, you even put PBR music in the background. I hope you make more
Tsukasa Tawada is an incredible composer, the soundtrack to Pokemon Colosseum, XD and Battle Revolution are some of my favorites out there!
@@mchaosgI also have to say I really appreciate how many opinions we share about katamari it's really refreshing cause no one knows about most of the games. I've been playing though the PSP one lately
@@mqtakk I speak the truth! Eventually I would like to cover Me & My Katamari, hopefully we share similar sentiments.
@@mchaosg I'm going to be recording gameplay of every game in the series here soon so if you need certain gameplay of anything let me know!
also sakurai should've added the prince of all cosmos to ultimate as a bonus dlc character for those who own a copy of reroll
The Prince does appear in Pac-Man's taunt, I actually wish I had mentioned it!
Lone Rolling Star is the best part of the soundtrack
Those reviews at the end drove me insane! Growing up I found the original to be great, but it was lowkey a like eerie with the story 😂
We Love Katamari I’ve always thought to be the greatest entry of the series and I’m really glad lots of people agree.
It’s been over a decade since I first picked up KD and I still casually listen to them lol
I was high af the first time I played KD. It blew my mind when the girl said “I feel it! I feel the cosmos!” I was like “BABY GIRL, YOU’RE 8, AND YOU CAN FEEL THE ENTIRE EXISTENCE OF REALITY???” 😂
awesome video dude! now i just have to pick up we love katamari reroll, great job!
Hope you enjoy it!
Did you end up buying WLK Reroll? Curious what you thought.
I feel like the camper boy is the most brutal of the bunch.
This video is insanely well made, as I'm watching there is only 400 views which is just absurd, great job!
Thank you for the kind words, perhaps next week with the actual release of WLK Reroll the algorithm will bless me.
excellent video, Katamari is such an underrated series
You don't have to worry about IGN or other reviews during that era for We ❤ Katamari. A lot of reviewers had a brain disease and couldnt appreciate a novel concept wanting to improve on the base game and not immediately throw it all out the window for something different the developers werent interested in doing
So true, I feel like it was just "cool" to be overly critical for no reason other than it was what everyone else was doing at the time.
@@mchaosg I didn't know that. I love trivia about these games so that's pretty interesting.
the sequel was my favorite game as a kid, I didn't even know there were others until a couple years ago
Beautiful katamari is my favorite, grew up playing it with my mom just started playing again yesterday.
26:27 I literally shouted "No, Cherry Tree times is dope" 😂
I liked this look back, I'll have to keep an eye out for your stuff
I respect you if you do like it, it's just not my jam!
Good points! I'm looking forward to when I finally play the sequel. At this time, I must say I'm biased towards the original because I've only played reroll and I start to cry every time I hear lonely rolling star. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
It's a heck of a tune!
My parents loved We love Katamari a lot and when I was 6 I tried it on our PS2 and I fell in love. I still play it
This video is amazing, I watched the entire thing not knowing who you were and not knowing how many views it had, so when the video ended I expected at least 100k views. It's a matter of when, not if, you'll become really big
Thank you for saying that, I'm flattered. Maybe some day!
I played Katamari Damacy for the first time in 2017 or so, then went right onto We
It's vindicating to hear that, so thank you for sharing that with me!
Awesome, glad I could make you aware! Thanks for watching, also!
I got we
I love Shikao too! I'm glad Reroll made the series so much more accessible for people.
Mate, I'm gonna need more essay videoes like this. Please and ty
I'll try my best! 😁Thanks for watching.
i'm also someone who had the experience of playing we love katamari first as a child, mostly because when i went to buy the first game at the store they only had the sequel available. happy accident though because to this day WLK is one of my favourite games of all time!
really lovely video btw! i really liked how the transitions for each stage are gifs of the cousins you can roll up in that stage. super cute touch!!
Thank you for the kind words! Those gifs used to be featured on the official website at some point, thankfully people preserved them over the years! During the release of Touch My Katamari, they actually brought the gifs back and made new ones for the cousins featured in the game.
Thanks to Ratatan I found your Patapon retrospectives, now I'm going to buy both Katamari games thanks to you 💪
Whoa!! Amazing, thanks for watching and I hope you have fun!
What a great love letter to a wonderful series, Thank you!
Happy to do it! Appreciate the viewership :)
We love katamari still stands as one of if not my favourite game ever next to portal 2
Both are incredibly fun games, no doubt! Thanks for watching.
@@mchaosg np, will def keep an eye out for new content
i can't believe i watched nearly 2 hours of this it flew right by
I can't believe it either, thank you!
Watching this video made me wanna go back and listen to the OST again.
can't go wrong with that
Fantastic video!
I'll have to try that, but I agree the haptic feedback from the steam deck's track pads are really satisfying.
"Katamari on the Swing" is the absolute perfect title for the We ❤'s main title song.
i played katamari damacy reroll a few weeks after the direct that announced we love katamari reroll, it was on sale and i thought it looked cool. needless to say i immediately fell in love with the series and i bought we love katamari reroll as soon as i had the money to do so
i have a soft spot for weird and interesting japanese ps2 games, and i totally agree that we love katamari took everything that makes the original great and improved upon it massively. theres SO much to do in that game and even though ive seen the credits, i can say for sure that i havent gotten everything its got to offer. theyre incredibly impressive little games, especially for the time they were originally released. unfortunately i am british and the first game didnt release on ps2 here, but i plan on getting a ps2 copy of we love katamari in time too.
That's awesome, glad to hear you fell in love with the series too! Europe definitely got the short end of the stick, but in these modern times that's less a problem with imports.
I really enjoyed this. I just recently finished playing katamari reroll on my switch
Awesome, will you be picking up the sequel?
Wow, not only did we encounter this game series the same way, but I've encountered another upstate New Yorker!!! I'm not from Buffalo, but I am all too familiar with Mighty Taco. And Loganberry. Excellent video!
Whoa, that's crazy! I was worried nobody would know what I was talking about too, but here we go! Thanks for watching 😃
i still remember when i first played katamari, i was probably about 3 or 4 at the time and my neighbor from down the street let us borrow her copy of we love katamari. my sister and i were playing super monkey ball deluxe, and when i left the room, my sister swapped the disks. i have a hard time remembering things from my childhood, so im not sure why that stuck with me so much, but ive loved the series ever since. eventually my neighbor got an xbox instead so she let us keep her copy. i wish you could check playtime on ps2, its probably unholy lol
it may be basic, but the prince has always been my favorite :)
The Prince is an excellent pick any day.
