We as a society need to do better and give Patapon the recognition it deserves. These silly little eyeballs have been the catalyst for forming so many friendships and fun memories, and I cant wait to support the shit out of Project Jabberwocky when it comes out
@@Arcyguana it's the problem on other project but yet would still affect the company reputation, nevertheless it's the fault of the artist and the people managing that project since they didn't asked the artist permission when the very early character Design still on the process finding some references and inspiration to take upon(Which some pose of the characters are literally exact copy and had some designs that are on other works that wasn't removed) so yeah it's the both party fault and this is me as an artist.
yeah it is, its also where most people would drop the game because of it while the sequel toned down the grinding, its still grindy, but not as much as the first one
Playing the same hard mission where one mistake loses the run over and over for that one rare drop, so you can play that INSAINLY hard minigame and hope that it will roll a good item (i dont remember how exactly the rewarding from forging worked)
@@pandarieus maybe they aren't, but despite never having problem with normal gameplay rythym and always getting and staying at fever asap, i remember that i dreaded the difficulty of the minigames
I was genuinely surprised when I found out this retrosepective is recent, when I was young I would always remember my mom playing patapon with me. last month I managed to work ppsspp just to finish the series once and for all. You did all of us patapon fans a favor :)
I've played and been a Patapon Fan ever since i was 7, but growing up in a poor family i could never afford to play these games as a child, so i would stick to what little gameplay there was on youtube to watch, sometimes just putting videos and re-watching them so much to the point of me memorizing what actions the person took and pretend to play the game myself! All i had access too were those flash games you'd find on websites where after defeating the 3rd level, you'd unlock a wallpaper creator, and that was the most fun i'd had! Even without having access to the game, i learned everything about it, strategies, bosses, music, characters, lore etc. And it always was devastating to not be able to share or talk about this game with people my age because of most of them being into more serious or edgy games, so they would instantly say "That's a dumb game" or "Un-fun 2D Game." Years later, when i learned that i could emulate the psp on mobile and on computer, i was in awe, and lost my mind about finally being able to play the game i had followed for so many years. The hours i've spent in Patapon 2 & 3 are insane, over 1000 hours on my current P3 Gamefile and well over 3k on my Patapon 2 game, i sincerely hold this franchise close to my heart and always will, and i'm glad to have seen someone make such a well edited and dedicated video about this awesome title. And i'm glad to see some more people become interested in the game as time goes by (And i did just like you said in the video, i too recommend people trying the 2nd game to get them into the game back in the day lol). I will never NOT stop saying this is the best game of all time. A Patapon Fan for life!
That's amazing. I remember when I first discovered emulation too, the floodgates really opened for me. I was finally able to play all these games I could only read about on fan sites. I think it's interesting you were so invested in Patapon before actually playing the game, that just goes to show how incredible this series is overall.
I play patapon 3 on my phone, help me cuz i need help on making multiplayer,me and my friend want to vs each other but we're both not well in coding,so pls help
Dude I had a similar experience with PaRappa! Easily one of my favorite game series ever, such a huge impact on my life. I used to watch the gameplay videos over and over and over, and sometimes I would boot up RUclips on my PS3 and use a dead controller and just match the buttons and pretend like I was playing lol. My cousin got me a PlayStation 4 for my birthday one year and I immediately bought, downloaded, and beat PaRappa 1 and later 2, so amazing to finally play it
I find it pretty humorous that the first half of all the patapon unit names are just taken from japanese. Hata - flag/banner, Yari - spear, Tate - shield, Yumi - bow, Deka(i) - huge, kiba - cavalry, (mega is a pun on megaphone) Robo - robot (obviously), Tori - bird, Maho - magic
I've always loved their use of the self fulfilling prophecy motif with zigotons. Their prophecy says patapons will cause destruction when they reach earthend, and so they try to stop them, which causes patapons to cause the destruction. Had they not tried to stop them, patapons wouldn't cause any destruction to zigotons. I think that's quite neat :>
@@dizzyheads then go bro! I've been playing Patapon 3 for months now and I've been enjoying it ever since. There's mods for it that are relatively easy to install. I play it on my phone so it really does feel like I'm playing on my psp again
This trilogy was very addicting. Especially the second game. I miss these games. Patapon 2 on its own easily took exaggerated amounts of hours from me back then. Good times.
Thank god for emulation. I've been playing single player for the entire Patapon 3 back then bc I didn't know how multiplayer works (I was 11). Then after replaying 2 and 3 on emulator revived my love for the franchise. I was surprised that there's still an active community, and I have made great memories playing multi w peeps in discord. God bless that Depths of Infinity mod, it actually gave me incentive to continue on the dlc quests, and I've beaten some of em w/ just me and a friend. It was the most fun I ever had during the pandemic. Oh ye I've watched this entire thing in one sitting. I'm just glad that this game is not forgotten even after a decade of its release.
Hey I’ve been trying to play patapon 3 on multiplayer with the emulator but I’m no computer engineer I don’t know how to set it up. Is there anyway you could help me, or do you know of any discord servers I could join that could provide assistance?
it's been a pleasure to watch, thank you for making this video! i loved everything about it and the fantastic montage and narration makes it so enjoyable, there are some things that even I didnt know! a very well put retrospective and you can see a lot of work went into the research and script. love to see it and also thanks for the shoutout :)
Patapon 2 and the Loco Rocos were a huge part of my childhood. Both beautiful games with fun mechanics and great music. But while I’ve beaten loco roco a hundred times. I haven’t gotten to the end of patapon 2 once, and I’ve tried many times. That’s game steps up
I know I am a bit late to the party, but next year we are getting the new game, Ratatan. After more than a decade of waiting we are finally getting another banger of a game, looking forward for it. Also great video of one of my favourite franchise, great job!!
I can't describe the joy I felt hearing that there is a spiritual successor to one of my favorite series that I thought would just die out Great video, actually didn't know some of the background stuff on the creation of the game :O!
Patapon was the first game I ever played, it was my uncle who introduced it to me. I still play it every now and then but I would never forget the memories I had with it.
My childhood. Patapon 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time. A unique concept for a game that is perfect for a person like me who likes both RTS and rhythm games.
32:02 I feel like Patapon and old world monster hunter games (example: MH 3/3U and 4/4U) have a very charming tribalistic style that I just love😊 makes me wish I could see the style more often. I also get that they are trying new things when it comes to the art style of newer monster hunter games... But the older style is just so charming
This was such a great video to watch! I hold all 3 Patapon games very dear to my heart and I've met so many good friends through it from its online multiplier and from my short time on deviantart. I still own all 3 of my copies of the games, the same ones I bought when I was younger. Patapon is one of my favorite games of all time, sad to see we'll most likely never get a 4th game. You also forgot a Patapon easter egg in Playstation All-Stars. When using Big Daddy's level 3 attack on the God of War Stage, he will cause the whole stage to become underwater. If the Patapons are out when this happens, Gekoronpa rarepons (The Frog ones) can be seen swimming in the background until Big Daddy's level 3 ends. Thanks for making such a great video! We need more Patapon!
That's super interesting, I'm sure they were just taking creative liberties but I feel like the Patapons cannot swim (opening to P2, Shookle) but that's still a cool easter egg! Thanks for sharing, were you in the Patapon-Club on DA?
So excited to watch this! Patapon 2 remains one of my all time favourites. I'm surprised to learn that a French artist was so instrumental to the series - I thought for sure Patapon was idiosyncratically Japanese. He's still posting art to his instagram too!
As a Frenchie, I actually thought of the opposite ! Was always intrigued as to why would a Japanese game use a French childish name ^^ "Patapon" is a French expression for the sound of a drum, a military march or beat in a childish, cute manner.
@@herrcrazi7495 I have read in the past that Kotani-san mentioned "patapon" means something along the lines of children in french, but it's good to have a more accurate explanation! Thank you for sharing.
Man, this game was my jam in primary school. I have more than 500h between three games. I agreed on almost every point you made, you went through everything. You brought me back so many good times, just as im finishing Patapon 2 remaster. Thank you
Man patapon 2 was such an important game for me back then, it alongside MHFU shaped how i play and choose games nowadays, i am a huge fan of RPGs, bonus points for unlocable gear and equipment, its also one of those games that has that nintendo polish and charm to it like zelda, pikmin, etf
The game Ratatan came on my radar as I am a fan of some of the character designers working on the project, and heard it was a spiritual successor to Patapon. I had never heard of patapon before, so this video was a super great way to see what the series was. Thank you for making this retrospective, will definitely have to try to emulate the games (or if I can find a hard copy) soon ^-^
BROOOO Im actually still playing this. I had a stroke of nostalgia a while back and went online and got all 3 games again and relived my childhood. I love this game and learning more about it is super cool! Glad im not the only one that enjoy this really enjoyable Gem of a game :) Thanks for bringing it to light again.
This video brings back a lot of good memories for me, I have so much nostalgia for the PSP and Patapon in particular. I was never really a console player, never had a playstation or xbox, but I saw an advertisement for Patapon when my parents took me on vacation in Paris. I could not read french, I didn't know what the game was about, and I had never seen a PSP in my life, but I spent the next year begging them so that I could get a PSP on my birthday to play it with. Patapon 1 and 2 were my favourites but I also had the Loco Roco games, me and my younger brother have so many hours in Patapon and I can't imagine what my life would have been without the appreciation for music and rhythm that it gave me (not to mention how great the games themselves were). Thank you for this retrospective
That's really interesting, it makes sense considering France is Rolito's homeland - I would of loved to see what kind of advertising efforts were made for Patapon there, do you remember any specifics?
It was over a decade ago so the memory is fuzzy sadly, all I can remember is that it was a flyer glued to a pillar that had a lot of advertisements on it
God, isn't this a blast from the past. I remember when I first got into Patapon back in middle school because my best friend at the time was obsessed with it and would never stop talking about it. He eventually got me to get the series and I was hooked for years; even had my username for most sites referencing my main, Cannogabang. We were always playing 3 together with others through a now-dead chatroom called Pataponzoo. Even participated in challenge runs like Gheek Dongora with 4 Oohoroc's or Craggy Monsters with 4 Destrobo's. Good times.
This video popped up on my suggests after finding out about Ratatan, absolutely teared up throughout the early part of the video, thank you for this lovely love letter to such a lovely game series!
It always felt like there was a connection between Loco Roco and Patapon! I played these games nonstop growing up. I always put one earbud in when I was playing around other people
There's definitely some overlap, like the composer and Japan Studio being involved, but they are ultimately two different things. I was always too embarrassed to play these games without headphones on...
Probably the most in-depth and informative retrospective I've seen on the series so far! Thanks for making it, it was nice to revisit one of my favorite games and learn quite a lot I wasn't even aware about!
Watched in full, glad to see they're continuing the spirit of the game somehow and a PC release? I'm excited beyond words. Great video, thanks for the memories!
I’ve never actually heard of Patapon before this video, I never had a PSP growing up. These seem like really fun rythym games, I was tapping my foot to the music tracks! I really do hope that the jabberwocky project turns out great :))
It fills my heart having been recommended this video by youtube and seeing someone else be passionate about this series. Unfortunately at least from my point of view the series never got a lot of attention by people overall since it has been such a big influence on me during my childhood and it is still one of my most fondly remembered games of all time. Thanks for making this video for all of us who are also fond of this game. Keep it up!
Bro! This game is a banger, I remember repeatedly attacking the steel door just to upgrade their skill tree to solo the last multiplayer dungeon and man I really raid it solo after days of hours of grinding. Those memories are really the best and thank you for creating this video man now I know the other series bec Patapon 3 is the only game I played.Great work
One thing I noticed between watching clips of 1+2 and 3 was the unbelievable amount of power creep. You were lucky to deal a few hundred damage per hit in the first two games, even with the best equipment. By the post-game of 3, you could deal damage in the mid SIX digits, and high-level bosses could be taken out in seconds once you get Fever mode.
The scale is ridiculous and makes replaying earlier content almost pointless, at least in P2 it would eventually catch up with you since stages level up after each clear (and thus become harder)...
This is a bright enough future for me, a video about it this detailed was something i wouldn't have though possible, thanks a lot for saying things i would've never even known about
Patapon was a big part of my early gaming years. After watching the Ratatan trailer, your video was suggested to me; and boy what a wonderful trip of nostalgia this was. I think why your video touched me because it came from a place of love, as you laid out the sentiments of a true fan perfectly. Great job! And can't wait for Ratatan!
YO I MADE IT INTO THE VIDEO AS EVOSOL IN THE ART ROLE LIST AT 1:14:39 :oofa: On a more serious note, this video is nice to see (especially to those not familiar to this gem of a trioligy) and gives those who've been in the series for a while a nice feeling of content with these games. Im glad the community still lives to this day. :D
Wow, I didn't even knew this video was released 1 day ago, but this is my first rhythm game since I was a kid when my uncle bought it way back in 2012 and the series is really good. Damn, what a nostalgia.
I absolutely loved this video. I didn't mind the lengthy duration; it felt like a treat, to be honest. Thank you for making this! What a nostalgic ride. 🔥😍🤙
@@mchaosg I'm currently replaying Patapon 3 for nth time, and I think I'll replay Patapon 2. So many customizations in that game that it can literally drive someone crazy, and the battles are tough too. But it was fun, and the mini games too! Thanks for keeping the Patapon fire burning, Tucker! 🤌
Patapon will always be my #1 game ever. I found the game by complete accident as a young kid. My step brother had found a PSP while on a construction site but it was to badly damaged and didnt work. it still had a game inside and he knew I had a PSP myself. So next time i visited him he gave me the game. That game being Patapon. I never heard of it and it didnt really look that interesting but i gave it a shot. The music was the first thing that got me hooked. I would play dancing to the beats as I played in my room with headphones and sing along to keep rhythm. It became the only game i really played on my PSP, and then i found out it had 2 other games and i went straight to GameStop to pick them. I still listen to the soundtrack when i workout since it always fills me up with motivation and good memories
This video just reignited some core memories from my childhood. I remember playing the demo of Patapon 2 with my brother for upwards of 20 hours being enamored by just the fight against the Dodonga and the few hunting quests. Blows my mind that we'll all be able to play the spiritual successor in just a few years from now. How thrilling!
I searched for a video like this like 3 years ago, didn't find ANY and I was a little disappointed because it was strange that a game like this hadn't any good review, retrospective or generally a good video. Bless u for making me relive a memory so deep in me! Locoroco next that's a fantastic game too :)
@@mchaosg that's nice to hear! Take your time! Also the story why I was stuck playing Locoroco 2 and not other games on my PSP back in the day was the left d-pad was drifting (I guess that's foreshadowing that the following console I'll own gets drift too) and I think it was a coincidence that Locoroco has a control scheme that mostly used the shoulder buttons. I still wonder why how I 100% the game before.
You just unlocked a core memory when i saw this video in my recommended feed. There's basically only 2 series I never stopped playing on my PSP back then, Monster Hunter and Patapon. I'm sure Patapon was probably also what leaned me more to my preference of rhythm games and love for music. This Retrospective was amazing and I felt nostalgic just seeing someone as passionate as me talk about this beloved trilogy. I also learned something new today, I can't wait for the day Project JabberWocky releases, no matter how long it takes. Again thanks for the wonderful video mate.
Man, these patapon songs live rent free in my head since my childhood. It was a pleasure to relive my best gaming memories captured in your video! Thank you for this and keep up the good work ❤
Ratatan just got it's official trailer released. It is the spiritual successor to the Patapon games (FINALLY, WOOOOO!!!) and will be out on Steam, PS4, PS5 and Xbox. Super exited for this. Yay, Patapon is back.
1:28:48 Oh (just finsihed the video), you mention Project JabberWocky. The official name of this is the "Ratatan" game mentioned before. Yay. I instantly recognized the bunny heropon at 1:29:22 right away from the new official trailer (along with the enemies as well).
This was an awesome video essay. On par with Joseph Anderson and Matthewmatosis. Would love to see more of these videos from your channel in the future!
Really loved this video, i started the series from 3 and went back to play the others, got the platinum trophy on the 1 remaster just as a token to myself of how much i love this wonderful goofy series. And now, your information about the potential spiritual successor has me almost in tears. Thank you so much for sharing the news and for this wonderful jump in the past!
Thank you for this video, man. I love it. Specially the breakdown on the musical aspect and sound details, there aren't many videos going as in depth as you did with the diferences in the vocals. This series is very special to me.
I really wanted to break it down because it adds so much to the game feel, a lot of times people will just describe something as "good" but I want to show exactly why.
Patapon and its sequels are some of those extremely immersive rhythm games. Even on the small PSP screen I was so enveloped in what my little army was doing, panicking when they were attacked, celebrating their victories, getting hype when they were charging up. The music truly made the action of that game perfect. One of the few games where the art direction, gameplay, audio, and everything else really blended together in one, clearly-defined and memorable experience. And I still put the music on and drum out the beats as they sing.
I just found this video and felt super happy seeing so many people liked these games too. I had played all 3 of these games. Patapon 2 was my favorite one, the minigames, the levels, the new rarepons, the added classes and the heropon masks was super cool and I remember building a powerful army with divine/demon weapons to take on the harder versions of the bosses. I did like the cooler looking Uberhero’s and them having different cries of battle when you activate the hero mode in 3 but I really wish they kept having an army of patapon as yeah, the 3 patapon were pretty weak and I had to rely on my Uberhero alone and when they went down it was basically over. Eventually I powered my default Yaripon enough to to throw three spears and strike lightning to hit crits to just hit max damage and kill most these things in a couple hero mode throws. It was satisfying but took a LONG time compared to patapon 2.
Thanks for watching! It's a shame, because P3 does everything better from a visual/audio/game "feel" perspective, it just falls flat on the difficulty. If the game respected the players time, I think a lot of us would be singing a different story.
Loco Rocco and Patapon were by far my favourite PSP games, even more than Monster Hunter. I would love if Patapon and Loco Rocco got new games or some skin of spiritual successor. Light hearted, funky music and lovely art all around. Also, Elite Beat Agent, that would be great. Edit: GOOD NEWS! RATATAN HAS BEEN FULLY FUNDED ON KICKSTARTER IS ON ITS WAY TO RELEASE
I always wanted to play these games as a kid but I only ever caught the very end of the demo release at Walmart where you could play it on those overhead screens. I loved it and wanted to ask my mom to buy it for me for Christmas or something but I've never been able to remember the name and the demo station at our Walmart stopped playing Patapon after that first time I tried it. Spent like 15+ years thinking about that cool game with the spear-throwing shape-people and you've finally given me a name and breakdown of ehat the game actually was like. Thank you so much!
Thank You Tucker for the Video, I Love the Patapon series as well. A HUGE Fan here! I remember I’d drawn Patapons in my Middle School to my High School days. And Even after Japan Studio Shut Down. I’ve Thanked the Former Sony CEO Shawn Layden for making games like Patapon to be on the spotlight. Even Replied me with a Patapon Gif. And Would it be awesome in an Alternate Universe that Patapon 4 might happen with a Mario Maker with a bang? Maybe Before Shutting down Japan Studio? That will be Great? But truth was it didn’t happen and it’s reality still 😞 So Thank you! And to Kotani-San, Rolito-San! Sony and their Producers for this Great Series to love and enjoy 😊
I think I remember seeing your tweet to Shawn! From what I understand, Patafour is going to add a Mario Maker-esque feature. It's good to know the community will be continuing the legacy when Sony no longer wants to.
bro I am blown by this marvelous work. I am working on a Spanish review of this game, but and being so proud that I was near done I came to see your video out of inspiration. I am with my mouth wide open because my thing is nowhere near as good as this. much love!
Thank you for the kind words, however do not feel like you need to compare yourself! Anyone talking about this series at all is the best thing that can happen for Patapon. So please spread the love!
Had this game when i was less than 10 years old. Mannnn watching this gives so much nostalgia & happiness to see a game i live be loved by other people too. Awesome video
Oh boy i remember being just a small kid without access to internet or any other guys with psp trying to beat coop dungeons by myself. You actually cant enter them alone, but i found the exploit that let me and i was beyond proud and happy, what a game what a times. Nice video ! Oh and the bosses too and late game dungeon , i remember just screaming in frustration from their unfairness. Two words: ice golems
I was sooo self conscious about people hearing the music in this game at home or even school, I think I would have died from embarrassment had anyone known. I would exclusively play with headphones until I was older.
I didn't need to imagine, it is clear in their faces back when I was in high school, and I didn't own a pair of headphones. (Heck even still now, I love the ost way too much)
I'm in my patapon phase after hearing the Ratatan announcement, and I got to tell you this video was just what I needed right now. Also no matter my age I still enjoy the patapon series. The first time I got into patapon was when I was in 3rd grade, then a couple of years later I was addicted again, I think I was in middle school, and now I'm after uni, and I still feel the childlike excitement while playing these games. Thank you for this video, it really hit the spot.
Finally, a video of people covering the game! Love the Second game because it's literally the best story and gameplay-wise. Patapon 3 then kinda ruined that with the annoying difficulty, especially those giant enemies. Also upgrading weapons in that game is just annoying
Good lord what a great video this is, I also grew up attached to the patapon games, and still find myself pleasantly surprised every time I meet someone who knows the franchise; I had no idea about project Jabberwocky! I've been itching for some new patapon-esque adventure for a while. Thanks for making such a great video on the series and everything around it!
Thanks for watching! It's always great to know people are becoming informed about Jabberwocky through my efforts, it was definitely important to me to spread the word so I'm glad it's paying off!
Thank you so much for making this video, Patapon was not my childhood but my way to make friends during a time. I didn't have any friends in middle school. so it was kinda hard at the beginning until I met some other guys who had a PSP, and then we played patapon 2 together, it's been almost 12 years and I still have the best friend in the world thanks to this awesome game. Thank you so so much for making this video.
I was so addicted to Patapon 2, it's my favorite rhythm game, the music, the boss fights, the army building, just an amazing game. I was really underwhelmed by Patapon 3 tho, it just didn't fit my taste I suppose, felt too different
I'm surprised you didn't mention the awful grinds for class skills or grass grinding in patapon 3. Especially class skills, since grass grinding can at least be avoided with multiplayer. Maxing Taterazay's shield skill for example, requires you to do 7667 perfect defense commands while running the class. That is, at bare minimum, almost nine hours of chaka chaka song. Not the fastest or slowest grind in the game - fastest goes to Kibadda while slowest is either Grenburr or Oohoroc - but that's still way waaaay too much.
I lightly grazed the topic during the explanation of the other two weapon classes starting at level 1 when unlocked - but in my eyes they aren't mandatory for progression through the main story. Grass grinding is clearly not an intended strat by the devs, it's just a happy accident. There's no real sense in grinding past level 32 unless you're playing competitively. But yes, they are insane lol
For the most part, I'd happily agree that class skills aren't necessary, honestly. Yarida's multi-spears will be unlocked anyway by playing, and so on and so forth. The issues come from two things. First and foremost, when you decide to try out new classes. Sure, if you've been levelling purely on Yarida for most of the game, you'll have the multi-spears skill levelled pretty good - but switch to Oohoroc, and even once it's levelled it'll be completely useless because it relies on its class skills to do anything. Vice versa if you switch to Yarida. Second is classes that rely on another class's class skill. Nobody will ever play the game through on Charibassa, as an extreme example. Even as a less extreme one, Cannassault without being boosted 8 levels by Pyokorider's class skill will be rather... limp. No singleplayer playthrough is going to realistically take long enough for someone to actually grind out many of the class skills; nobody is going into the last dungeon with their Grenburr rocking the full set of status immunities while attacking and getting to Zapper 5, let alone maxing it. It's like the class skill system was designed to make people grind for excessively long times, just to stomp pvp
I am happy that once in a while a youtuber would make a retrospective in the series and it really does deserved it as I think this is one of the games that truly wasn't able to meet it's fullest potential due to alot of circumstances both in the game, production, the company(Sony/SIE, Pyramid, and Japan interactive), and it's timing. There's plenty more I wanted to talk about but I am absolutely happy that Adachi and Kotani would return to make a spiritual successor to the series. Yes it may not be the Patapon we all knew and love but the DNA and shared experiences of the devs + more freedom in developing and time, I really think Project Jabborwocky have a high chance becoming a more recognised modern classic and the true successor to Patapon as a whole. I can't wait to see the baton being passed to the next game! I can't express how much excited I am as Patapon have a special place in my heart and the only number one.
Patapon was probably one of the most pivotal games when it came to my formative years. I had initially picked it up and was instantly hooked from when I was merely 6 or 7. Fast forward to the age of 17 and I found myself finally able to replay the 2nd and 3rd Patapon games through a pc emulator, and in doing so helped create a more “mature” perspective of the game that I developed alongside the nostalgia I had for the series. I look forward to its spiritual successor and what it has in store. Heck, I may try and find an emulator of the first game, replay the whole trilogy, then play project jabberwocky to really get the most out of this beloved rhythm series.
I didn't know patapon 3 had a community. But being so restricted on online and the risk of "infection" on progress sounds like a huge nope. (Even with the solution)
I stumbled on this video from some random Patapon stream with around 30 views. Thanks for the video! I never played Patapon 1 on my own PSP, but I did play it on my nephew's console. Patapon 2, though...I played it so much on my PSP and then on my PS4Pro (before I moved into apt with no TV) - I love it very much. Ahh, composer worked on LocoRoco games. I never understood how to play them properly, but it was so fun that I couldn't care less.

I'm hopeful, but it barely took two months for the studio to get caught plagiarising art for one of the other projects.
Came here after the Ratatan announcement!! So excited for the new game and I learned a lot about the development from this video ❤
Awesome, glad to hear that! It always makes me happy knowing people are still learning new things about Patapon.
Also fun fact, a very early prototype of Patapon (same one as in the ign trailer) is now available to the public and can be found on RUclips
I just now saw that Ratatan was even a thing, and I'm so dang hyped. The game looks soooo good!
@@s1nistr433Do you know the person who uploaded it?
Are these the same people who made patapon?
This game is grindy as hell. My 12 yr old ass had no idea but still enjoyed the hell out of the game. Great times
yeah it is, its also where most people would drop the game because of it
while the sequel toned down the grinding, its still grindy, but not as much as the first one
Playing the same hard mission where one mistake loses the run over and over for that one rare drop, so you can play that INSAINLY hard minigame and hope that it will roll a good item (i dont remember how exactly the rewarding from forging worked)
@@SpyroX.I the mini games aren't hard, they're just annoying to do
@@pandarieus maybe they aren't, but despite never having problem with normal gameplay rythym and always getting and staying at fever asap, i remember that i dreaded the difficulty of the minigames
It's weird but...
The Patapon games are the only ones that I actually don't mind grinding in.
It's just that addictive
I was genuinely surprised when I found out this retrosepective is recent, when I was young I would always remember my mom playing patapon with me. last month I managed to work ppsspp just to finish the series once and for all. You did all of us patapon fans a favor :)
From one Patapon fan to another, thank you!
I'm having problems with lag on my PS4 controller, how did you get it to Work?

Hata - flag/banner, Yari - spear, Tate - shield, Yumi - bow, Deka(i) - huge, kiba - cavalry, (mega is a pun on megaphone)
Robo - robot (obviously), Tori - bird, Maho - magic
There's a lot of Japanese in these games, especially in the lyrics and character names...wish I knew more to properly identify them!
They still would have likely opened the vessel, but at least the Zigotons wouldn't have been wiped out prematurely.
A game like this released in modern day would be a hit. It’s a shame people don’t got the eye for quality like this anymore
Hopefully Jabberwocky can capture that kind of audience.
Aha, “eye”
WELL WELL WELL!

Relevant, "Ratatan" was announced recently. I'll be looking forward to that.
1 hour and 35 minutes of my favorite game franchise? Awesome.
Why nobody makes games like this anymore
I'm a firm believer that limitations breathe creativity, so as graphics become more and more realistic..I feel like we lose something.
Man I want to emulate the game again
Patapon was so fun and the music is GREAT
@@dizzyheads then go bro! I've been playing Patapon 3 for months now and I've been enjoying it ever since. There's mods for it that are relatively easy to install. I play it on my phone so it really does feel like I'm playing on my psp again

Patapon 2 on its own easily took exaggerated amounts of hours from me back then. Good times.
I played the shit out of the demo lmao. Even to the point I got almost late game materials
A 1h35min video essay about Patapon in 2022? Well, unexpected, but now I know what I'm gonna watch during dinner.
Patapon was the best way to incorporate music into rpgs of its time .
3 was fun as hell .
I'm just glad that this game is not forgotten even after a decade of its release.
wait there is a mod for it i try it out

Patapon 2 and the Loco Rocos were a huge part of my childhood. Both beautiful games with fun mechanics and great music.
But while I’ve beaten loco roco a hundred times. I haven’t gotten to the end of patapon 2 once, and I’ve tried many times. That’s game steps up
Man, how did you have the same childhood as me holy moly
I know I am a bit late to the party, but next year we are getting the new game, Ratatan. After more than a decade of waiting we are finally getting another banger of a game, looking forward for it. Also great video of one of my favourite franchise, great job!!
I just found out about Ratatan today and I gotta say I’m super hyped! Replaying Patapon 1 2 and 3 on my Legion Go

That's true...shared pain.
Thank you for making this video! You did a massive favour to the whole Patapon community! ♥️
It's the least I could do!
I can't describe the joy I felt hearing that there is a spiritual successor to one of my favorite series that I thought would just die out
Great video, actually didn't know some of the background stuff on the creation of the game :O!
A lot of comments have been saying they didn't know either, so I'm glad I'm making people aware of Project Jabberwocky!
The perfect storm...!
32:02 I feel like Patapon and old world monster hunter games (example: MH 3/3U and 4/4U) have a very charming tribalistic style that I just love😊 makes me wish I could see the style more often. I also get that they are trying new things when it comes to the art style of newer monster hunter games... But the older style is just so charming
god i get that! i played mh tri on the wii so much as a kid and the style is so nostalgic!
@@mchaosg Yes I was! I.. used to draw there and post my own Patapon ocs too. Not sure if you were there when I was around.
So excited to watch this! Patapon 2 remains one of my all time favourites. I'm surprised to learn that a French artist was so instrumental to the series - I thought for sure Patapon was idiosyncratically Japanese. He's still posting art to his instagram too!
Rolito is amazing! Such an incredibly talented artist.
As a Frenchie, I actually thought of the opposite ! Was always intrigued as to why would a Japanese game use a French childish name ^^
"Patapon" is a French expression for the sound of a drum, a military march or beat in a childish, cute manner.
The best game Nintendo never made!

I'm very grateful, thank you!
what?
It was over a decade ago so the memory is fuzzy sadly, all I can remember is that it was a flyer glued to a pillar that had a lot of advertisements on it
I literally just got back into this series. Such a gem. Patafour and patanext have me hype.
Good times.
An hour and a half video about a franchise I have never heard of? Hell yeah
This video popped up on my suggests after finding out about Ratatan, absolutely teared up throughout the early part of the video, thank you for this lovely love letter to such a lovely game series!
Happy to do it my friend!
Happy to do it!
Watched in full, glad to see they're continuing the spirit of the game somehow and a PC release? I'm excited beyond words. Great video, thanks for the memories!
Glad to hear it!
Theres a person even making patapon 3 mods!
I’ve never actually heard of Patapon before this video, I never had a PSP growing up. These seem like really fun rythym games, I was tapping my foot to the music tracks! I really do hope that the jabberwocky project turns out great :))
Hey, that's awesome! I wrote the script with the intent of new people being able to enjoy it, so I'm glad it paid off.
Keep it up!
Happy to do it, thanks for watching!
Bro! This game is a banger, I remember repeatedly attacking the steel door just to upgrade their skill tree to solo the last multiplayer dungeon and man I really raid it solo after days of hours of grinding. Those memories are really the best and thank you for creating this video man now I know the other series bec Patapon 3 is the only game I played.Great work
Good ol' grass grinding lol
One thing I noticed between watching clips of 1+2 and 3 was the unbelievable amount of power creep. You were lucky to deal a few hundred damage per hit in the first two games, even with the best equipment. By the post-game of 3, you could deal damage in the mid SIX digits, and high-level bosses could be taken out in seconds once you get Fever mode.
The scale is ridiculous and makes replaying earlier content almost pointless, at least in P2 it would eventually catch up with you since stages level up after each clear (and thus become harder)...
this video made me get into patapon like around 5 months ago and i dont regret it
Love to hear it!
Aw, that's so sweet - thank you! I can't wait for Ratatan either!

On a more serious note, this video is nice to see (especially to those not familiar to this gem of a trioligy) and gives those who've been in the series for a while a nice feeling of content with these games.
Im glad the community still lives to this day. :D

Wow, I didn't even knew this video was released 1 day ago, but this is my first rhythm game since I was a kid when my uncle bought it way back in 2012 and the series is really good.

I absolutely loved this video. I didn't mind the lengthy duration; it felt like a treat, to be honest. Thank you for making this! What a nostalgic ride. 🔥😍🤙
Thanks for watching! I've been telling myself I made a feature length movie...
That's an awesome story, thank you for sharing.
I know right? It's a dream come true!
I searched for a video like this like 3 years ago, didn't find ANY and I was a little disappointed because it was strange that a game like this hadn't any good review, retrospective or generally a good video. Maybe one day!
Late reply, but that's interesting! The L button on my first 3DS broke, so any game that used it I couldn't play anymore until I got the New 3DS XL.

And now, your information about the potential spiritual successor has me almost in tears. Thank you so much for sharing the news and for this wonderful jump in the past!
I love that this video is making so many people aware of Jabberwocky!
I watched the entire premiere even though I had 1 AM 👍
Really good video
thank you for your sacrifice
Honestly I am very excited for a new Patapon future. Cause this kind of game concept is so unique.
aw man, I missed out on buying the trilogy soundtrack on CD, would've loved that
Patapon and its sequels are some of those extremely immersive rhythm games.
The visual conveyance in this game is incredible, credit where credit is due and the art style only makes it better.
One of my favorite PSP game.
great video, thank you 🔥
i have completed the first, second and third game hundreds of times using different types of patapon, characters and strategy. I miss this game
That's a cool and tragic story, 15 years of not knowing would totally eat me up inside lol
Very nicely edited.
It's nice to see the game still has an active community after all this time.
Patapon will always be in my heart as my favorite music game

But truth was it didn’t happen and it’s reality still 😞
So Thank you!

Has any person played Patapon music when your friends give you their phone, cord, etc. while driving?
Imagine the look they give you
I was sooo self conscious about people hearing the music in this game at home or even school, I think I would have died from embarrassment had anyone known.
I'm glad I was able to deliver, it's cool you were able to grow up with Patapon!
what's really funny is i've watched this video like 2-3 times and now my parents have watched it
truly, the influence of patapon knows no bounds
Whoa, that's crazy - did they like it?
they certainly seemed to! i don't think they watched the whole thing but they looked like they were enjoying watching it
really excited for jabberwocky project
:)
Me too!
Finally, a video of people covering the game! Love the Second game because it's literally the best story and gameplay-wise. Patapon 3 then kinda ruined that with the annoying difficulty, especially those giant enemies. Also upgrading weapons in that game is just annoying
Ratatan here we come.
Thank you for sharing, that's awesome!
I was so addicted to Patapon 2, it's my favorite rhythm game, the music, the boss fights, the army building, just an amazing game.
I was really underwhelmed by Patapon 3 tho, it just didn't fit my taste I suppose, felt too different
That's fair, I feel like they are two pretty different experiences overall.
Came here after the announcement of Ratatan
Stick around, I'll be talking about the Kickstarter once it's live!
Cheers to that!
My PSP has a broken joystick and none of my games are playable without it... none of my games? No, there is Patapon2 wich is fully playable without :D
The joystick is sooo weird on the PSP, the texture especially. The 3DS had the right idea, but it was still fragile unfortunately...
How is project jabberwocky going?
No updates so far, Kotani-san indicated there will be more info this year iirc.
@@mchaosg ho
Hey, remember when you asked about this? Well there's a Kickstarter now... www.kickstarter.com/projects/ratata-arts/ratatan
@@mchaosg i saw the video, so yes
I stumbled on this video from some random Patapon stream with around 30 views. Thanks for the video!
I never played Patapon 1 on my own PSP, but I did play it on my nephew's console.
Patapon 2, though...I played it so much on my PSP and then on my PS4Pro (before I moved into apt with no TV) - I love it very much.
Ahh, composer worked on LocoRoco games. I never understood how to play them properly, but it was so fun that I couldn't care less.
I'm still shocked how nice the algorithm has been to this video. Thanks for watching! Adachi-san is a fantastic composer.
Thank you for this Patapon documentary, it really brought back memories of playing this series for hours on end.
Can't wait for Ratata!
Thanks for watching, can't wait either! Did you back the Kickstarter?
