I was once told by a very wise lady to never say , “stay strong” to someone going through grief. She explained that the person going through grief should not “stay strong” but instead should be as fragile and vulnerable as they need to be. Instead it is the other people that should “stay strong” for them . Stay strong is not for you, it’s for Brian to stay strong for you and allow you to be whatever you need to be.

I wouldn’t say, stay strong, to the grieving person, although, myself, as the grieving person I feel I’d have to stay strong for the kids, the mokos and close whanau.

Thank you Liz & Brian, my Granddaughter past away 9/5/2019 my Eldest Granddaughter she was 12ys old, she had a heart ❤️ transplant aged 11ys old after a year of normality in three day's her body shutdown & left us...i couldn't understand why she passed away b4 me i was 55yrs old then im 60 now she would be 17 now, i never got the chance to say goodbye...i was leaving in Huntly not far from Hamilton at the time i got a phone call from one of my daughter's saying that she pastaway 😢...it hit my whole family hard she was our princess 👸, i prayed 🙏 everyday that the Lord grant me one time with my moko(Granddaughter) then one night 🌙 I had a dream that i was sitting down looking out this window but it had no glass it was open clear view of nature it was beautiful to look at, as if i was looking into heaven it was so beautiful, and then out of the blue my Granddaughter stood up behind this window with no glass, i stood up ran to her hugged kissed her all over her face, i was crying at the same time she was smiling, she said to me that it's "Allright im ok" 👍, then i woke up and i remembered when i woke up i was crying 😢 i cried some more because the Lord granted me just one time with my princess 👸, it was only a short dream but i was thankful, i told my family about my dream especially her mum my daughter, we both cried it was happy tears, because we know that she is ok 👍 👌 .

Thank you Liz for sharing your grief at the loss of your mother, and thanks to Brian for his sensitive, caring response. It is indeed a beautiful song, written by Don McGlashan (a dear friend of mine) who was the lead singer for the Mutton Birds. Maybe you’ll get to meet him one day, although he spends much of his time in Vancouver these days having married a Canadian woman, but does return home for periods every year.

Just go with your grief - its a natural life event to grieve the loss of those you love.
Eventually it becomes easier and you will have overcome this - but until then grieve the way you need to grieve.
You are soul-tied to your mum and this is why it hurts. Embrace your mums love coz its a huge part of you. Give your mum a big hug and tell her you love her - visualise it and feel it whenever you need to.
    God bless you

When my Father and Grandmother died, being the strongest in the family, strength was zapped from my very soul at those losses. Strength was what i needed in those moments, being reminded of it,is what i needed. I am a clone of my father, and i was my nans favourite, i can understand how some people look it as a kind of betrayal from within, but it's never a betrayal, greif comes and goes, and it's taken in a different context from one person to the next. I know you are strong Liz, as am i,for me,i lose focus of that at times, much love.

I just watched yr vid and started crying, because I get it. I’m Maori so I had a heap of support, and I had prepared myself for it, but it is something else. I lost my mom coming up 2 yrs ago, I still think of her every day and tear up at random times, but to describe how it impacted me, early on it felt like I was lost in a forest without a map or compass, or adrift on a boat without oars. It literally felt like a part of me had been severed. I would take forever to dress, and shower. I would walk around forgetting what I was supposed to be doing. I was always a planner but for 2 months I couldn’t think more than a day ahead. My great husband got me through. My dad and I got closer, I visit him every day now. It’s still a struggle. But I try to focus on the future as the past makes me sad. The priest at my mothers funeral said something profound to me that gave me comfort, he said she’s taken up her place as ‘tupuna’, and as Maori we hold our ancestors as esteemed, he said women are whakapapa and without women there is no whakapapa so her place as tupuna will resonate through her whakapapa, Kia kaha

😢😢❤Thank you for sharing your heart. We buried our 85yr old mother two weeks ago. She had stage 4 lung cancer 😭. I miss her very much. My sister and I cared for mum right up til she peacefully passed away. Im not ready to be around lots of people. Depending on who u r Kia Kaha can make u cringe or it can bring strength as u grieve. I love the song Anchor ❤i cldnt stop crying😭😭😭 the words r so powerful n uplifting. For me my Anchor is knowing I have God holding me in my loss, my husband, and my whānau who surround me. They are my Kia Kaha! An anchor that holds me, grounds me as I cry, without that, grief can lead us to a dark place.

I love this discussion. As a Londoner who came to New Zealand in 1953 (I'm 85) I liked the saying Kia Kaha early on but could never put an exact translation on it. I think there's more than just "stay strong", I've always felt there is also a strong feeling of warmth and genuine understanding. I"m glad you have got such a sensitive answer to this, and we do all feel things in different ways. I've had to learn not to expect to feel the way that others do, like using the term "mindfulness" doesn't do anything for me, I think from hearing so many people using it. I understand the concept, but am glad we have so much language and music to benefit us all.

Kia Kaha ~ The battle is within your mind, your mind will look outside in your environment and say do this and do that but looking for answers outside of yourself has never worked however staying strong standing your ground where you are inside and relaxing letting go changes the inside - Everyone suffers because they have a way they want it to be.” If you have to be doing anything about it to try and be OK, it means you’re suffering - we need to stop doing that first so that we can be okay

Kia Kaha is the most beautiful of phrases....as you said it is not telling you to be strong. You are staying strong to be functioning at all. First of all, belated Birthday wishes for you Bri. Hope you enjoyed your day. Liz, you have the most natural and captivating way of relating a story. I could have sworn you were talking to just me... You are, by far, the best story teller I have ever heard. Your first book is a very positive example of your craft. You should write a book of bedtime stories for adults. I would love to hear you relate a story that was total bs and listen to you, where the facts are totally untrue. I bet you could spin it just the same because you are skilled at story telling. Also loved Bri expressing to you how your new understanding of Kia Kaha affected him and what it means to him. He was so proud of you Liz. I have an idea . How about recording some stories for adults. The content could be anything you choose but spoken in the true Liz style , so, on that note... Well that was just beautiful! Queen Elizabeth 2 described Prince Phillip as her strength and stay. As a person who used to sail stays hold the mart up. Stays are very important in boating and in life. I loved the Mutton Birds song. I’ll need to look more up. Stay strong had a completely different meaning to be strong. BRIAN WATCH THE EQUIPMENT!! Otherwise, "Technical Difficulty, Please Stand By!". Happy Belated Birthday Mate!! By the way, Yes, free advertising is in Tucson! I did have a IT'S A DRAMA T-Shirt mide that I wear in Tucson!! I think I felt Marks sentiments where, I didn't want to overcomplicate things! But so long as Liz knew where my heart was that's all that mattered!! Despite saying this in the comment section of youtube, please keep me anonymous as much as possible for what I'm about to say. I had to rewatch this episode over a few times with a lump in my throat! especially what Brian was saying around the 10:30 mark!! 18 months ago I was nearly killed in a wreck which PD determined wasn't my fault. I called a couple of former coworkers, that I've always been in contact with, more importantly former bosses who hired me, & telling them I was ready to end things. It's been a long road to recovery!! Without any finger pointing or shame, the only thing they both said was what can I do to help? Mental health they check in every morning no matter how busy their schedules are & even with their kids! This past 4th of July, with Dr.'s clearance, they got me up to Lake Tahoe so I could spend it with them & their families!! Wanted to share that with you! That's what keeps me going, & now they understand why I say Kia Kaha!! I do miss home, but they obviously make the U.S. home for me! Great Movie 2008 Forever Strong. Sorry for the novel! Not only your words on your shows, but can tell just how genuine you both are!! Kia Kaha, Kiwi Kindness, & sincere greetings from Tucson, AZ! Cheers!!

In the boomer generation we as men were all taught to protect calm and push on. We grieve differently as men need to analyse, women need to be emotional its just how we are wired.
Dosent mean men dont have emotions they process emotional difficulties in a different fashion.
I was once told by Maori elders i was a warrior.
In there culture its not only a position of being the protector but one of educator providers and overall guide to his whole community.

I loved the 'spreading your imaginary skunk tail, and spraying him!' I used kia kaha to you, also but I think 'kia kaha has more to it than 'stay strong' - it's not a direct translation (nothing ever will be in Maori/English anyway). I am so sorry for any Maori listening if I'm wrong, but I think it means "the outside world may be falling to bits, but hold onto who you are emotionally and spiritually. Maori people have a lot to teach us about the mourning process - and that's what it is - a proces. That they understand the 'getting out of emotions" - there is wailing and grief at a tangi - and it's healthy. They let their enotions out, and they own them. Not like our Western 'stiff upper lip' culture. Sorry tangent there! Love to you both ❤
