      Growing up in Bowie's era, we had 'pirate' radio stations in UK - Radio Caroline, Radio Luxembourg. They were ships, moored just outside the 12 mile limit, and so didn't have to follow broadcasting regulations. They played great music like Bowie's, the banned "Je T'aime" (look it up) and also Bohemian Rhapsody in full. Wore these old headphones and listened at night on my battery transistor, under the bedcovers so mum couldn't hear me!

      It wasn't on the day he died for me. It was a few months later, but the same. I can't get enough and it's been 3 years. I've known about him my whole life but I lost touch with him if you will after the 1980s cause I thought he was gone and wasn't any good to listen to. I had no idea what he was doing. Then I found out after he died. I didn't go look him up right away. I didn't care at first. but I looked him up anyway a few months later to see what all the fuss was about. Now I know. I was looking at "mainstream" comments and looking at the "mainstream" side of things when I should have been looking underground. You'll find someone true...a crystal moon. It's only forever...not long at all.

    RIP sir. More humans like that, please.
    I feel this interview really highlighted how he was truly "an artist" just doing as the universe wanted him to. Love the part about Dylan - That's what it is! Bowie clearly the same sort of creature. When you're an artist making something pure, even if it's ugly or not 'classical' it will still fly and be its own unique bird. Don't be caged into following the trend, create a trend nobody imagined was there.
    Beautiful advice throughout, but the big takeaway: Want money? Be mainstream/plain. Want to birth the thing in your soul? Be 'you' with pride and thank god if it pays the bills. That's 'da struggle' classic of the artist's life, even back in the castle-days.
    What a fascinating moment it would have been, to sit down and have a chat with that human. But thanks to interviews like these, it allows one to at least imagine what kind of things he might say, if you got to talk to him. :)

    • @sheilaboston7051

      Not really only a 70's figurehead. Bowie was a figurehead in just about every decade because he was always re-inventing himself and his music. Starman was brilliant, as was Let's Dance (around 20 years apart) right up to Blackstar in 2016.

    Weirdly, he's confused "This Is Not America," which he wrote and performed with the Pat Metheny Group, with "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)," which he wrote and performed with Giorgio Moroda. The entirety of his response is discussing "Cat People," up until he segues into talking about the movie ("The Falcon and the Snowman"), which *did* feature "This Is Not America."
    His reaction to hearing that Queen was playing on the Metropolis soundtrack is interesting, too. I can't tell if he's disappointed/jealous that he didn't get the same opportunity ("You picked them instead of me?!"), or if he was disgusted that *their* music would be played over his beloved movie. Queen and Bowie are two of my favorite artists (perhaps the top two), so I'm fascinated by that dynamic here, particularly since they actually recorded together. Hell, Bowie even performed at the Freddie Mercury's Tribute Concert.

    • @Dehzee
      @Dehzee 6 лет назад

      he had a bitchy, control freak issue with freddy. both were bitchy control freaks, i don't think david could let himself appreciate freddy, because as much as he thinks he has no competition, they were in competition for that movie, and he lost! :)

      It's not like he would only remember Sean Penn, he obviously knows he wore a song with Pat Metheny But what really happened? Don't you think he was avoiding answering the question about working with Metheny? To me he was "acting" his answer because he didn't want to recognize Metheny or working on the movie for whatever reason. Having been around Pat some he can be a musical bigot so perhaps Bowie just flat out doesn't like him, didn't like the project and doesn't want to promote it.

    Being a Metheny fan I've always wondered what David Bowie thought about working on falcon and the snowman and here he completely snubbs Pat Metheny and never even addresses the question. I wonder what happened between them that would drive Bowie to avoid talking about the actual song and working with him. In the 80s I heard Pat dis Bowie when someone asked how he liked working with him saying "here's a pop guy" recently after Bowie's death Pat had changed his story saying how amazing it was. But I still wonder what really happened. It's at 9:00

    • @truefunksoul8638
      @truefunksoul8638 2 года назад

      He seems to get mixed up thinking of Cat People (Putting Out The Fire) because he did that song with Moroder, so I think he inadvertently recalled the wrong soundtrack song and the Moroder connection popped into his head. I don't think it was a snub of Metheny at all, This Is Not America was a far better song anyway. No other reason for him to jump to the Moroder anecdote unless he just got his wires crossed with the song names being thrown at him randomly asking for his thoughts all those years later.

    Il était un Dieu de la musique ; il en avait la grandeur, la puissance, la créativité, la séduction, l'outrance. Il allait au fond des choses, au bout de ses recherches musicales ; il avait l'oreille pour dénicher LA note, LA phrase musicale, LE rythme novateur. Humain jusqu'à l'excès, il n'a jamais reculé devant les expériences et s'en est nourri pour ouvrir la musique à de nouveaux sons. Il était beau, intelligent, empathique, curieux, et profondément ARTISTE : il a offert au public un Elephant Man plus vrai que nature SANS MAQUILLAGE ! Et des films dans lesquels ses personnages étaient toujours particuliers et hypnotiques. Un homme hors du commun, un artiste hors norme, un musicien de génie : un Dieu sans aucun doute. Une véritable Étoile. 😖

      I think he was a little jealous but mostly a little bummed, he and Freddie were friends after all and they wrote Under Pressure together.

      If you don’t have David Bowie doing it then Queen is the only other alternative!

      Totally envious that he didn't get to do it (with Eno or Moroder or both) not "grossed out" come on even if he felt that way he would not blurt out his displeasure in such a crass way.

    And he thought things were bad in the early nineties. His description of the direction music was going in was prophetic, it's now become so slanted towards wanting fame and riches, as opposed to creating art, that finding good music amongst the dross is very challenging,

      He was punched by his good friend George Underwood a Brilliant Artist, who got into a row with David over a girl. He went for treatment I believe at Moorefields Eye Hospital having a few operations but he developed Anisocoria, which is the why his pupil stayed dilated, it also gives the illusion of different coloured eyes. I saw an interview with George who is a lovely guy, he said he had felt awful about what had happened in the heat of the moment. He and David stayed great friends and made a song together, David forgave him and said it did wonders for Ziggys other worldly look.George designed the Hunky Dory cover, he and David stayed lifelong friends and he was so shocked at the news his best friend had died.Check out his artworks they are Amazing. He did a lot of album covers in the 60's/70's he is so talented, and just like David so humble.
