Music video by D'Angelo, The Vanguard performing 1000 Deaths. (C) 2014 RCA Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment
It takes a special kind of artist to make such chaos sound so awesome.
Man O'Neal it’s chaotically beautiful
Amen....
Another example I can think of this is the song "Map" by The Microphones
I've come to the conclusion that D'Angelo fans have good taste in music.
Good conclusion. It's right! :)
amazing taste
I'm a metalhead that heard this for the first time yesterday and now I can't stop listening.
Yeah you're totally right lmao
👀
Facts on facts.
I'm just happy Prince lived long enough to hear this.
and phife
verdean613 We still got George tho
And that's a mighty good thing.
다행히 프린스가 흑예수를 듣고 죽어 다행이다
Man I thought of the same thing 🔥
Deep sigh... For Nicole and all the Illuminati baiters, here are D'Angelo's words on the album's title: "Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can easily be misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah," he noted. "For me, the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah." "It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen," D'Angelo explained. "It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them … Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader."
Messiah
/mɪˈsaɪə/
noun
1.
(Judaism) the awaited redeemer of the Jews, to be sent by God to free them
2.
Jesus Christ, when regarded in this role
3.
an exceptional or hoped for liberator of a country or people
If you take the definition from dictionary.com, the third explanation would encompass what D'Angelo was really trying to say. Sometimes we have to look at all the definitions of a word in order to appreciate it. Many of us just go for the usual stuff we know without looking further. So I am still #TeamDAngelo!
calisouthqueen I think he meant the second definition judging from the intro to this amazing song. Or, he could have meant all three...
Nietzsche
J. Edgar Hoover was
concerned of the rise of a Black Messiah.
" Prevent the rise of a messiah who could unify and electrify the militant black nationalist movement. Malcom X might have been such a messiah. Martin Luther King could be a very real contender for this position."
Read the Interview D'Angelo /Bobby Seale.
Once we all understand we are the living word! A piece of our creator is within everyone with the light any mention of race will not be recieved with rejection, but with praise! Because he is I and I am him and what we are born as onto this earthly plane and who we recognize! Is it not a rejection of others but an embrace of self.... and eventually it will all fall away and we will be self! Good over evil! Music is medicine 💜
Omg... I have never liked _every single song_ on any album until I listened to Black Messiah. This is magic.
Aja Johns Brown Sugar a classic also. To be honest he is like 3 for 3 in my book,
Maurice Townsend I just listened to that album a few days ago. I'm in love with "Cruisin' " lol
Aja Johns Yeah that and "When we get by" was my favorite two cuts off that album.
Aja Johns So what you mean is; you haven't listened to very many albums and aren't much of a fan of music.
Air Zeus You are actually 100% incorrect. I can't even fathom how you came to that conclusion
Anderson .Paak took so much inspiration from this. He knows..
Especially at 1:42, forward. You can hear the influences with the vocal layering and drums
black people invented rock and roll btw.
Blacks invented Rhythm and Blues. Whites invented Rock and Roll. The two are very different in style and soul, and a lot of Rock and Roll came from the European Classical tradition.
@@EgoShredder Chuck Berry would like a word with you.
@@maxvendome8662 Please tell me that you are wise enough to not use Google or Wikipedia for your research....
Blacks invented rock n roll that is true. And not many people know this but - the godmother of grunge is a black woman. Tina Bell. She was before Nirvana. So yes rock is very much black which whites took and ran with as they do.
"Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be easily misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decided to make change happen... Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album ‘Black Messiah' creates a landscape where those songs can live to the fullest."-D'angelo
AGREED bruh
Even in this song specifically he says Yahweh Yahshuah. The original hebrew names the slaves spoke of before the europeans whitewashed his name and commandments, D'Angelo even continues to speak about how he's witness so much evil (which i assume is higher ups in the industry) and that he can't wait to be a soldier for his lord and be sent over the hill for war.
@@okari9855 Europeans didn’t whitewash Yahweh, the name wasn’t commonly used by anyone by the mid-to-late second temple period, as the ancient Jews began to think the name was too powerful to use anywhere outside of the temple in Jerusalem. Then when the Romans destroyed the temple, the name was almost never used again and the original pronunciation of the name was forgotten by the 5th century CE. Europeans never even had a chance to whitewash it basically
Those drums, those drums, those drums, those drums.
Hwhehehe
🥁👍🏾👍🏾
Yes indeed :-) Swung 1/16 notes underneath a seriously swung 1/4 note pulse...hits hard AF. 4:23 is where he "brings out the Moses staff" and parts the Red Sea! Lol We talkin' 70's P-Funk...turned up to 11 :-)
@@bourgeoisbrats pure hammer time

the preacher set the Track on fire and the rest was carnage , what an artist .
This album is perfect..this brother has Soul and is an Absolute Genius
The genius about this album, is that it was seemingly engineered to be heard with headphones. This provides an intimate setting where nearly EVERY chord, strum, beat, horn, key, rift, squall and audio experience can be enjoyed. I must admit, when I was in the car, I was like "What in the world is up with this audio," but when I plugged my headphones in......................................CLEAN UP ON ISLE FIVE!!!!
Ridiculous...simply amazing. Especially on the slower songs...he KILLED IT!!! Wonderful album.
You're exactly right. When I first put the cd in and "Ain't That Easy" came on, I was like, "What in the actual hell?" @ the mix. Then I put on the phones and was like, "Oh, ok. There we go." I haven't yet heard it in the car, but I'm sure it won't be the same experience (especially since I'm deaf in one ear).
Mr. Joekzalott
Uhhh well then of course it sounded better with headphones.. you're only getting one side of the mix without the other side interfering like it would in your car. But that's not an accurate take on the music...
No, it's a dj phone with both channels combined.
Ok. My bad. But still not the same : / would think it would be better with 2 speakers and you sitting between them at a distance
@Kenneth YOU ARE EXACTLY RIGHT. If you bought the physical album it actually states that on the back, that is, that the best way to listen to this album is with the volume all the way up! It also states that the entire album was recorded with no plug-ins and with analog instrumentation... real piano, not keyboard, guitar, etc....
many comments about unable to understand lyrics, notice how even not understanding exactly what hes saying, ''you know'' exactly what he's saying??? That's the real deal soul baby!!! Hes speakin to the soul in you, groove with it!!!
I made the mistake of listening to this song while driving. I WASN'T READY! I had to pull over and just let loose. My goodness! 4:45 and beyond.. I blacked out..So.. much.. FUNK!
I feel you! : ) the fonk is just too intense
crazeegirl4life I'm trying to tell ya! I'm sure people passing me thought I caught the holy ghost on the highway!
MyNameIsUnknown89
idk if people saw this live, they gon be ready for the FLOOD of funk they'd get!
Brian Bryant THEY AIN'T GON' BE READY!!! lol
MyNameIsUnknown89 exactly! I doubt it they gon be ready for such a flood...lol

Man, I really take my hat off to
D’Angelo. This whole album is phenomenal. He is actually #3 on my top 5 R&B singers, (Prince and Michael 1&2). But damn, from Brown Sugar, to Voodoo, Messiah, you can see how his mentality and his music got so wiser. The man is incredible. Mad respect.
Agreed. Cee-Lo Green is in this category as well
Exactly
I definitely see the growth and I. Black messiah he feels so free
YOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! These hip hop artist today don't know the definition of hard!!!!!! This shit right here.....GOES HARD!!!?
Funny how a couple months after this dropped, To Pimp a Butterfly dropped.
this album is a masterpiece
absolutely
one of the most overlooked albums of all time
It won a Grammy. Would hardly say it was overlooked.
+Sam Ashley it at least should have been nominated for Album of the year at the grammys
+Sam Ashley it was snubbed of the recognition that it TRULY deserves
Verse 1]
I can't believe I can't get over my fear
They're gonna send me over the hill
Ah, the moment of truth is near
They're gonna send me over the hill
[Verse 2]
I can't believe I'm so caught up in the thrill
Ain't nothin' (And nothing's) gonna change my will
Locked and loaded up, and I know the drill
(say know what I'm saying)
They're gonna send me over the hill
[Pre-Chorus]
I been a witness to this game for ages
And if I stare death in face, no time to waste
But oh!
[Chorus]
And if I charge it to the game before
Every time I slip into the unknown
Well that's only when the spot gets blown
It's war
That is the Lord!
I won't nut up when we up thick in the crunch
Because a coward dies a thousand times
But a soldier only dies just once
Once, once
[Verse 3]
Yahweh, Yehushua
He don't want no coward soldier
Aaah stick it in the golden sand
Musta didna hearda ma prayer
I receive everything that it means
And wield it victoriously
Aha, and cast out all the wickedness
(When they) send me over the hill
I was born to kill
Send me over the hill
[Pre-Chorus]
I been a witness to this game for ages
And if I stare death in face, no time to waste
But oh!
[Chorus]
And if I charge it to the game before

Some of us are TOO SLOW to comprehend the brilliance of this.
To understand this album you have to read Deuteronomy 28.
Same with DAMN.
I can’t believe this album is almost 10 years old! One of my favorites of all time🖤
Hands down. My favorite track on the album. I picked this up as soon as it came out. Currently making a collection of all inspirational black music for my three beautiful black boys to grow up with. Love it!
Any good recommendations?
The first time you hear the chorus kick in, holy shit
The Chorus GOES IN
21st century "There's a Riot Goin' On"! I'm blown away by this
and to this day..
Perfect comparison
Rip Khalid Muhammad... Good work on the introduction, true true so damn true
Bruh....listen to D at 4:46.....that old-school gospel squall....sent shivers all throughout my body....instant eargasm....Jesus!!!
Rage Against the Machine meets Prince...
Where is Dre?
Probably beating up a woman somewhere
D'Angelo is making everyone eat their hat, as always. Just to throw this out to all the RUclipsr's of the world... Does any one insult Tom Waits' incomprehensibility?
truth
Prince is listening to this thinking 'fuck'!What just happened!?
His Godson has arrived.
+andrew moonbeam Funny bc the first thing I thought of when I heard this is Prince. And damn this is good.
prince wouldn't think the word "fuck"
Prince was actually one of his mentors... he called him for advice about the direction of a lot of this project.. and past projects... that's why when Prince passed he was unable to do the tribute...
L Moody Interesting, thanks.
Revolutionary music..channeling the times and sentiments of those before us and reminding us of those days, so we dare not repeat the past but continue to move forward. In an age where everything is moved by SEX, he used a witty idea...Were all with you all colors all creeds we understand the music... D'Angelo is not a cop-out... he remained true to himself and put this out at the right time! Remember the "Devils Pie"???/Sheesh... chill people.
8 years later.. I’m just hearing this song a like 2 weeks ago. I really love this track. D’Angelo trying something new is a good thing. The frenetic pace of the beats sets this off lovely. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I have chills listening to this song...so much energy, so much funk, so much emotion...LOVE IT!!! 4:51...MY SPOT! Damn guitar player rocking my world!
I really wanna hear and see this live... is that Questlove on the drums
Agreed, & yessir!
OMG I WAS DEFINITELY SAYING THE VERY SAME THING!
No 2015 U.S. tour dates so far :/
I'm sure he'll come around
So proud, going to see the show in zurich, two weeks left👍

+David Levy Where did you purchase yours?
+Arnelia Waters my girlfriend got it for my birthday
I just bought a ticket to go see D'Angelo in March here in The Netherlands. I couldnt imagine not hearing something new from him ever again. His music has been such a big part of my life ever since the release of Brown Sugar. I am so happy he is back and still brilliant, now back to listening to another masterpiece of D'angelo..
lucky. he puts on an AMAZING live show....and this song is gonna be fucking incredible live. have a good time!
Thank u , i cant wait.
Unh. GodDAMN that soul-scream at 4:45! You know that shit was just right in the moment and uncontrolled, and when they got it on tape everyone lost their goddamn minds.
My favorite song on this album!!! The whole album is fiyah!
I've had a bootleg of this for years, but this sounds so much fierce on the final product.
A cross between Sly's most pyschedelic funkiest from "There's a Riot..." and Hendrix's most eclectic from "Electric Ladyland".
THIS IS A MESSAGE FOR THE TRUE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL!
The drumming is insane!
I would love for him to do this shit live at the MTV adwards. Like he did with devils pie, back in 2000. The crowd was fucking stunned lol
Man if he did this live on an awards show I would lose my mind. This song is so intense....especially with the intro
Word up bro. He's trying to spark a revolution with this song

D'angelo ... My Brother ! you just went revolutionary! Dr khalid muhammed and Fred hampton?! Great Job ! Great Album !
wha you mean just went revolutionary? he been open... afrika...
Sly Stone "Luv 'N Haight" influence is heavy on this one.
This is a classic album. Thank you Dangelo and the Vangaurds for putting together everything that black musicians laid out for us in music. This is truly a huge nod to all of the artists in the past. Experimental, well recorded (the feel is insane and is all about about the vibe and mood on the production.), 2 inch tape, no plugins. I am trully getting bored with music and this is exactlly what I needed. Ohh and make sure this gets listened to on good speakers, the mixes are all about the lower registers and crap speakers will sound muddy.... you will not be doing it justice be listening on small speakers.
Fuck me, I've waited 15 years for this to drop. It's everything I wanted the followup to Voodoo to be, and more.
Damn we in that time again every 40 years the black fist gets raised rip brother KHALID
Does anybody hear PRINCE??????? Or is it just me? He totally could have done this song!
Jaye P. prince could have did this up until around 1995. after that Year his creativity kinda was off and on. prince last album of brilliance was 2001 the rainbow children imo
CRACKA CHRIST!!
Luv that, makes me chuckle every time

Holy shit!! This makes a 100x dope song 100x doper!!! He's talking revolution!
ima have to listen to this several times for my brain to catch up with my soul.
Ikr!
WE BLACK FOLK ARE THE MESSIAH RISING!!!
I hear prince but also listen hard you’ll hear the OutKast/ Andre 3000 vibes also
This the music the aliens will be playing when the Mothership lands.
Listen. Everyone is trying to compare Prince and D'Angelo...STOP IT!! I love D but dig it.... artists world wide would love to have a forth of the talent of Prince. Keep in mind people Prince has been doing this for just about 40 years! Hes written HUNDREDS of songs. He plays what, 15 or 20 instruments proficiently? He has more hits under his belt than you can shake a stick at. When you listen to this song you hear nothing but Princes influence ALL OVER this. And thats ok...but lets not get it twisted. Now lets get back to listening to this monster track.
And Prince missed the whole strung out on drugs part if I'm not mistaken....
VIRGINIA! pharrell Williams Betta get this nigga in the "something in the water" festival for 2020? its a virginia thing you wouldnt understand #virginia
204 people don’t get it
R.I.P. Dr Khalid Muhummad a true warrior.
All religion came from Africa 5000-10000 years ago we we were visited by beings from outer space.
This whole album though🔥
The use of Dr. Khalid Muhammad & Fred Hampton in the beginning >>>
Funk ain't the word... Hey people don't forget Van Hunt👊
stop comparing the student and teacher. Van Hunt is nowhere near D. chill
Track 3 on Black Messiah sounds a lot like Van Hunt, no doubt.
D'Angelo succeeded where Prince failed, soulfully speaking! This piece is my favourite!
WHAT....!!!!???? Quest and D are good friends and LOOK UP TO PRINCE....AND Prince speaks from the soul OFTEN. Listen to his FULL length album with cinnamon girl and I think the last track is from the soul and a PROTEST song. PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU speak. Prince has so many releases in the past decade that you may not of heard all of the SOUL
Prince never failed.
Oh so prince failed did he,what the hell you smoking, what's the fuss you act like there is no room for more than one brother they are both dope.Prince is still dope and so wealthy that he only works when he wants to does that sound like failure to you, just enjoy the music!smh
Listen to Prince's last album guys! I'm a big fan of Prince but let us be honest, I was expecting the unexpected and his album is déjà vu!
dean ivan nice comment!!
Would LOVE to see D'Angelo and Adrian Younge do something together!
THE FUNK IS ALIVE!!!!!!
It sounds like (a young firebrand) Louis Farrakhan is preaching at the beginning.
It's Dr Khalid Muhammad no mistaken that voice :-D pbuh
This is truly amazing! Def hear the Prince influence. Saw the interview on Tavis Smiley. Glad to be turned on to your work! Thank you so much!
RIP To Khalid Muhammad. May God bless your soul
OUT OF THE STRATOSPHERE!!!!!!!!!!
SOUL TRANSFORMATIVE!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Khalid Muhammad, Peace and Blessings
I've always loved D'Angelo. He is definitely a musical genius like Prince. I can't get enough of "Sugah Daddy" what an awesome, funky song, love it!
Hi. I'm korean with not-good english listening skill. I love D'angleo and many artists. i found interpretation of this song, but before 1:21 not written. could you help me for giving speech subtitle or short summary
Does he purposely mumble through the song in order to force us to look up the lyrics and better understand the message?
It has to be done on purpose. All of songs are mumbled. Only the chorus is understandable. He forces you to look up lyrics. It is annoying. Enunciate!!!!
I can barely fucking hear him
u probably listening on shitty lapstop speakers
Xavier Leeds apparently I'm not the only one that thinks this... I have the album dumb fuck
Why would anyone buy an album that he don't like
Daniel P who says I didn't like like the album? Dumb ass, also just cause you don't like the first 3 songs doesn't mean a bad album moron.
***** man easy, maybe i misunderstood english isn't my main language, sorry if you felt offended but chill a little bit
Jay Electronica on the remix
Mixing and the underlying brilliance behind the mix are two totally different things. If you have learned anything by being a D'Angelo follower, then one would know that there will always be a hint of mystery behind his music.
My thoughts for the mix stems from the love of the art form and it's appeal to lovers of great music.
Imagine being at a Snarky Puppy live performance. There are those who sit in the crowd and those with the headphones that hear the culmination of everything flooding the eardrums, molesting each hair in the inner ear as they lay in sweet submission to the melody. Who do you think just had the best interpretation of the music? Crowd or headphones...
Love the album...I hear Prince, I hear Al Green, I hear Fishbone and I hear the Stylistics.....but not sure it warranted a 14 year wait...D'Angelo is kinda lucky some people are willing to going back to 2000 and pick up where he left off (kinda wish Prince would do the same) ..quality is forever I guess....
This is what Prince's "return to form" should have sounded like, and i'm loosing patience waiting for him to do just that. Meanwhile if there's anyone who literally is the saviour of the black music by giving it back it's guts, sweat, tears, (dare i say ; spunk). in one word HUMANITY. than that someone is D'Angelo. You can keep your Frank Oceans, your Miguels, your Kanyes, your Wknds and what have yous. Because by comparison their collective output is limp, anaemic, frothy, sterile. I'll make one exception, FKA Twigs
wait we can keep Miguel but you are accepting FKA twigs who is far from what Prince and D'Angelo has ever done? If anyone is following in form with Black music its a person like Miguel.
Also I don't agree with putting the new guys down to uplift legends. There is talent everywhere. Did you even listen to Kaleidoscope Dream? It's a fantastic record.
have you heard blonde...
D'Angelo is on a different level....
1000 Deaths is beyond banging....
Too much....Too much and much too much....
Thank you very much Brother D'Angelo.....
Go and see D'Angelo live to get a taste of precious memorable memories to behold....
7 D'Angelo concerts deep over here and still looking forward to many more....Yeah.....worth every penny and YOLO time ....
Yeah Yeah....
i want to watch.
Coming to japan again please!
This joint goes hard!! 2023 and ain't nothing changed🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Khalid Muhammad on the intro.
Don't remember this from his show last year. Wow, great groove. Is that Pino on bass? Maybe not, as it's pretty hard to slap those thick flat strings.
I read that it's D'Angelo on bass and Questlove on drums.
Read the same thing...Questo recently confirmed that it's fricken' D on ALL instruments but the drums :O !
YEEEESSSS!!!!! That pulsating, driving, trippy energy. damn did he make up for lost time!
This song is so good it can’t be put into words. Pretty amazing that dangelo wrote a lot of these songs 10 years before the album came out. And they sound so fresh and modern.
This song is so funky. I've never played air guitar until I heard this song
Are you listening Prince ?
its been 4 years since this album released. don't make us wait another 10 like last time!
Did D'Angelo predict the police shooting in Dallas? WOW!!!
This maybe the greatest song of all time
Dont never forget the Questlove genius poured onto this and all other Soulquarian related artists and musicians 🏆
Black Messiah..awesome!! love every song! thank you D Angelo
they said overcooked, they said too much, too little too late... thing is it's a buyer's market with live streaming in place. D'Angelo can tour his name and make his chops back on produced product, while his fans can appreciate what they like about the artistry. He doesn't have to focus on producing material that has to go Gold, ...or he would. He has a Brand in Brown Sugar and Voodoo... Fortunate thing about today's market if you are an established artist ( even after being dormant) is this simple and really easy concept.
Why is nobody talking about the lyrics … think
Same as Tupac's If I Die 2Nite
@@edm5378 good taste 🤝🏾
