Music video by D'Angelo, The Vanguard performing Betray My Heart. (C) 2014 RCA Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment - Видеоклипы
This arrangement is from a musical galaxy still yet undiscovered. The level of genius and skill exhibited here from the vocal to the musicality, to the timing and background harmonies are utterly incomprehensible. To say this is mind blowing is a massive understatement.
Bro...
Its Wes Montgomery in 3D Imax
Those bass lines are truly a killer
Word!
Heart Filling ❤️
Everytime I listen to D'Angelo it's a spiritual experience. The bridge is heavenly.
Amazing. We have lost touch w real instruments. No shade to the levels of production these days, but sonething other worldly comes thru the real vibrations of string instruments.. the banging of the snare. Beautiful
i'll bang your snare.......
True indeed!

This album is very sophisticated. Not for everyone. He literally raised my musical IQ.
Definitely not for everyone. And everyone doesn’t deserve good music like this lol
sameness
Ich liebe den Groove, und die Vocal-Performance!!!
You are correct

This song is a movie, a painting, a poem a movement. When something is a real as this......it's more than physical, more than spiritual, it's a peek into other dimension we can't comprehend the energies at force here
The Whole Album A movie 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This.
Hear hear!
People sleeping on the depth of this masterpiece. The Charade is my fave, for reasons, but this one is a musical gem of the rarest quality. It's overflowing with artful, tasteful excellence. Just lovely. 💙
this is the best response ever
This is so spiritual, this song talk to the spirit ✨
I still don't think D'Angelo realizes how big of an impact he is, dude is an icon....... and I'm from Virginia lol so we were all excited for him when he first stepped on the scene..... wish another album was on the way.......
Boy, I live in Europe and D'Angelo was a legend for me ( us) in the 90's already. I love his music, I love his amazing timing.. I don't know if more success would do him a favor, although he deserves it in every way..I mean, I like the life instruments and the realness that he could maintain in his music over the years. A huge label would maybe screw up his sensitive and unique sound, you know what I mean? Just guessing.
@Wilson Moody and @Abena Awiti Dikeledi both of you have expressed yourselves well. I pray that D’Angelo reads both of your comments ❤😊
Damn. Pino is so deep in this pocket ... he has to look up through binoculars to see lint.
Paddy Daddy-O truly underrated comment
Does anybody else understand that he is talking from the perspective of Jesus in this song?
i been under a rock for 5 years and you won grammys for this album toooooooo.wth fireeeeeee
my (late) brother got me onto this . He looooooved this album! RIP Bro Kal! 5/20/16
🎼🎤🙏🏽
I refuse to steal this....I'm going to the store to cop this.
Yes!
I'm sure D'Angelo will appreciate whatever is left over after the record label picks the bones clean.
"Through the storm, through the rain
I'll come running to ease your pain
Like the rails that cross the trains
Like the blood in your veins"
-D'Angelo
Beautiful lines
I have never listened out his music. This is beautiful.

Lovely name
This album is making me feel grown...I'm in my 40's and I have not felt this way in a very long time about music...yasss..D'Angelo is giving me life right now.. can't wait to rock this for my hubby!
This generation of "artists" seriously need to take notes. The smoothest song I've heard in YEARS.
This explodes my brain. Such a masterpiece of a song. Can't stop listening...
Matthew Phipps a masterpiece right?!!!
3:53 - 4:46 is my favorite part of the song, ESPECIALLY 4:28 - 4:46...I find myself crying tears of joy...listening to the music climax just FEELS so damn good to my soul.
What an ear orgasm...I literally listened to the song on repeat ALL day! D'angelo is a music god.
"Betray My Heart" LYRICS
As the day must have it's sun
And the night must have it's moon
Sure as both must rise and fall
I'll be there to see you through
Just as long as there is time
I will never leave your side
And if ever that you feel
That my love is not sincere
[Chorus:]
I will never betray my heart
I will never betray my heart
I will never betray my heart
Like the breeze that blows in June
I will steady keep you cool
This I swear with all that's true
I'll take nothing in place of you
When you're feeling down, down, down
You, my soul, can depend on me
You don't ever have to fear
That my love is not sincere
[Chorus:]
I will never betray my heart
I will never betray my heart
I will never betray my heart
[Bridge:]
Through the storm, through the rain
I'll come running to ease your pain
Like the rails that cross the trains
Like the blood in your veins
[Chorus:]
I will never betray my heart
I will never betray my heart
I will never betray my heart
Thank you for the lyrics....reminds me of Stevie Wonder "As".....instant vintage....LONG LIVE THE FUNK.
That song is the truth
My God....the lyrics are so beautiful!!
+Laddy Gibbons How in the world did you come up with this? However you did it, good job.
Thank you.☮1⃣💜
I'm gonna need present day artists to take note.
The next time I hear someone say "today's music sucks", I'm going to have an answer. A very positive answer.
Evan Redmon That's an interesting concept because technically, this is not quite today's music in a sense because D'Angelo is an established artist who busted on the scene about 20 years ago so he really wouldn't quite be "today's music". I would like to see music of this caliber come from the actual new artists who are truly architects of "today's music". There is no new artist even close to D'Angelo's musical standard, which is sad actually.
Well the mainstream music industry is certainly not interested in this. The traditions from which D'Angelo emerged are going extinct like a species of fish swimming in a sea of toxic waste. Apprenticeship and creative genius has given way to The Voice and video game musicians. The powers that be like it that way. Makes people easier to control. Why waste all that effort being clever when you can just make millions by regurgitating the same robotic pop slop every year?
D'Angelo just bought real music back. The man is a hero as far as I am concerned.
It's far too complex and introspective, and the lyrical themes are too controversial and nuanced, for most people. The industry's favorite puppets - white teenage girls - wouldn't even begin to comprehend what this is (the vast majority anyway - imagine a 17 year old Snooki clone, adrift in the emptiness of One Direction and Taylor Swift, and this hits her? Please.) Yes, it's based in the R&B traditions going way back, but this is a explosive layer cake of creative genre bending. Heck I'm 45, and a musician, and I'm just coming to terms with I have heard.
I hear as much Parliament as I do Prince here, but then Spanish guitar drops? Why the heck not. And accessible pop sensibilities? Just because he can. And Marvin Gaye, and Hendrix, and bebop, and acid jazz, and progressive rock...give me a few days and I'm sure more will be revealed. I mean, just listen to "Prayer". Do you hear those subtle off-time signatures? I don't even know what to call that.
Plus there's a very intentional, spiritually-based response to the cesspool of gratuitous occult shock pop out there. It's also a firm, confident bitch slap across the face of our culture's hypocritical morals and industrialized lies. This EXACTLY what the industry does not want, and EXACTLY what we all need.
It's new alright.
Evan Redmon Well said!!
Evan Redmon Yes please go in
3:50 and beyond...all other musicians take a seat.
For real!
Man O'Neal Oh....I just get goosebumps listening to this part...especially as it builds in intensity....
5 years later, and I’m still bumping this joint like it just came out.
I heard it for the first time around five days ago.

Same here.......................
Its amazing how Motown and Black Soul still sounds good in this era..if anything, Black Soul is a breath of fresh air with all this new music coming out!
This sounds so good, I may have to buy my first album in 10 years

it's really dope
So glad they were awarded the grammy
One of those songs that need to be recognized for generations
D' and The Vanguard killed this track, that baseline is intoxicating.
VERY VERY 'WICKED' BASSLINE!!!, UNIQUE!!!!!
It's sad, that a lot of people have been forced to listen to garbage music for so long, that they're not going to appreciate this album. This album is on another level. And some people, just haven't reached that level yet.
so, say... they can only get to enjoy it in *another life*?... ;)

Hands down my favorite song on the album!! I have already made it my ringtone. Yes I am that corny! If I could make it my theme music as I walk into a room -- I would do it too! God I love this song!!!
It's about to be really sad for some of these "producers" out here who thought they could ride that ratchet @** music forever! Real music is like real love, and it always wins. So happy to see D'Angelo back.
Absolutely! I think D's music is right on time too. It really fits into the current social climate. I am so happy to have him back!
Agreed.
I certainly don't have a problem waiting for the follow-up to "Voodoo" for 14 years if D' Angelo continues to produce quality music like this.
Nate Jacobs exactly lol
Yes!!!
Pure jazz all the way through....all the way down to the walking bass!
I challenge you to figure out exactly how you want bop your head to this. You might find 2 or 3 different ways and guess what...they're all correct! Stupid sick arrangement. Welcome back bruh! #GodBlessRealMusic
This is reminiscent of 70's soul music. You can even visualize the bell bottom slacks and afro hair style. Hopefully its a trend back to good music by real talented musicians.
Como el día debe tener su sol
As the day must have its sun
Y la noche debe tener su luna
And the night must have its moon
Claro que ambos deben subir y bajar
Sure as both must rise and fall
Estaré allí para verte
I'll be there to see you through

Como la brisa que sopla en junio
Like the breeze that blows in June
Te mantendré estable
I will steady keep you cool
Esto lo juro con todo lo que es verdad
This I swear with all that's true
No tomaré nada en tu lugar
I'll take nothing in place of you
Cuando te sientes deprimido, deprimido, deprimido
When you're feeling down, down, down
Tú, alma mía, puedes depender de mí
You, my soul, can depend on me
Nunca tienes que temer
You don't ever have to fear
Que mi amor no es sincero
That my love is not sincere
Nunca traicionaré mi corazón
I will never betray my heart
A través de la tormenta, a través de la lluvia
Through the storm, through the rain
Vendré corriendo para aliviar tu dolor
I'll come running to ease your pain
Como los rieles que cruzan los trenes
Like the rails that cross the trains
Como la sangre en tus venas
Like the blood in your veins
Nunca traicionaré mi corazón
I will never betray my heart
One of the best songs I ever heard in my life!
A beautiful record and a beautiful album, D'Angelo. Congrats on the release and thank you for sharing it with us all.
Whwn he says "stay right there" that's exactly how I feel when this track escalates..shit is crazy. Can't wait for the tour.
This is so reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's "As". It's not an easy task to come close to that level of poetry yet here we are with this art!!!
I never thought of that but I hear it now!
I think Prince, Stevie, and Marvin had a baby.
Ha! 😃
😆😆 Good one
nice one ahaha
Corey McCraw oh yeah. D'Angelo been "makin" babies in this world for a minute too. Hehehe.
.....And his name is D'Angelo......
dis make me wanna slap the hell outta somebody. So goddamn good.
hahahaha brehhhh don't hurt nobody thooo!
Funny thing is i can actually relate. This album is so damn good that i don't know what to do with myself lol
This may be best comment I've real for a song in forever. Thank you😃
A TRUE MUSICIAN!
Oh....my.....WOW! D'ANGELO please do not keep me waiting for you and your musical genius this long EVER again!!! I need this music therapy in my life like I need water.
This gift is what God gave to you to move through you & keep the world spinning.
Thank you for this!
Wow! I was sleepy but then I listened to this and now I feel like I have at least another two hours left in me!
Got to be the best track on what is a flawless album for me. Wish it was three time as long
OMG! I bout to loose it! the slight tempo change WOWSERS!!! things I like!
D'Angelo just....gets...it
Masego, put me on. Giving a real musician his flowers! Underrated for sure….shoutout to r&b money pod cast. ❤
Always been a fan every since I first heard him in 1995;) so glad he is back and bringing great music! ! Love me some D'angelo
Dare I say this is one of the best tracks I've ever heard in any genre! I'm high AF but this song (first time hearing it) hit special.
😂😂😂❤❤
This is such a wonderful song. Exactly how D'Agelo had to sound for us real D'Angelo fans to know that he really is back. MAGIC!!!
Oh, how we've missed you, sir! I want this released on vinyl ASAP, pleaseandthankyou.
FAVORITE song on the album. Haven't stopped listening or singing since yesterday. The world NEEDS this!!!!
The bass guitar and them horns are just sick.
What I love about the horns is how sensitive and softly stated they are... Just adds that extra bit of tenderness and love
We needed this...its been too long. The musical arrangement is high quality...he picked up where he left off. Nice.
Well this what heaven sounds like
The lyric "I would never betray my heart", along with the melody, is one that sticks with you. D'Angelo hit a monster home run with this new "Black Messiah" LP & this track is one of many highlights.
oh my god when this hits 2:53 it does something to me.
Yeah, man!! Exactly 1 min later, the song goes another level....Jesus!
I'm not PASSING the weed BECAUSE this song is fire🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶
Just came over to listen to this classic after Masego mentioned it in his interview on R&B Money.
I had this whole album on while I was on my laptop working. Caught myself smiling HARD as this track played. Lord I miss this man's music. I don't know what this nonsense is they play on the radio these days.
Dangelo is KING!
Sure is!
I love rnb but will never neglect jazz and soul like this

Cannot stop listening to this album. Thank God for D.
I’m loving this.Yeah!
Simple the man a is genius in his own right. no need for comparisons to any one. He is awesome, awesome, awesome. Did I say Awesome God Damn awesome. I love you Michael Eugene Archer.
Everytime I hear this, I think of Spanish Joint. Instant classic
sick sick groove
The groove is crazy! Pino is the man!!
The best way to listen to this album is through stereo headphones. Even if cheap ones are used... to get the full effect of this genius, use stereo headphones!
this song right here my nigga.. this song right heere!!
I have to get the liner notes to see who is playing on this. I swear, the guitar has to be Philly's own, the late great "Spanky" Alford. If you don't know Spanky's work, look him up on RUclips.
I'm almost sure it is. That man was my favorite guitarist ever. absolutely great.
Jim Lee
About twenty years ago, I used to participate in the Historically Black College and University equivalent of College Bowl. The event was sponsored by Honda and every year, they would have a musical guest. One year, the guest artist was Eric Benet. Imagine Eric Benet, two background singers and just Spanky on guitar. Phenomenal show. Afterwards, while everyone is talking to Eric Benet, I go up to Spanky and I tell him how much I loved what he did. We talked. Chalmers was from Philly and I am from Camden, NJ which is connected to Center City Philly. I told him I played guitar, he invited me back to his room and gave me a private guitar lesson. Really down to earth brother.
That's a great story. He was real humble. I hate to name drop and sound pretentious, but I had an unlikely opportunity to meet Spanky. When I heard the Voodoo album I wanted to learn to play guitar like the man who played on "Send It On" (I love the whole album btw). I read the liner notes and it said guitars C. Edward Alford.
Fast forward a year later to the summer of 2001 and I'm playing keys with a guitarist who I went to school with in Alabama. I wanted to take lessons with him but he couldn't and instead referred me to "this guy who plays for D'angelo." As soon as I got back to school, I went to the music store where he taught and introduced myself and I was surprised to find one of the most down to earth individuals I've ever encountered. I took lessons from him for about a year and he would show me anything I wanted to know. His main advice for playing this type of music was to listen to jazz and mostly gospel quartet.
Great man R.I.P. Spanky.
It's either Isiash Sharkey or Spanky Alford. This album took a long time to make and Alford passed while it was being made. Isaiah Sharkey is a young prodigy guitarist who took Alford's place in D'Angelo's band. He's been heavily inspired by Spanky, here's a video of him talking about him m.ruclips.net/video/iGrDXibO2uY/видео.html. I'm not sure which one of them we're hearing on this recording.
I think the most likely scenario is that Alford played this part or something similar on an earlier version of the song, but Sharkey replaced it when they tracked the final version.
This track actually sounds like it was meant for Voodoo
you are correct. recorded in 1997. Great ear
That small soft cut at 0:30 just blows my head off. Awesome tune!!!
This is greater than great piece of soulful song .Thank you Mr. DÁngelo .
bought it immediately, instant classic!

This is classic right here, I think this album is a combination of everthing we've come to love about D'angelo.
This album got a 9.5 out of 10 from Pitchfork, a rating that is rarely seen. Take a seat current artists.
they should take several. . . .they need to take SEVERAL seats. . .
Puerisha pphunkwephunk@yahoo.com Amen!
Kanye had 10 tho ....Thoughts about that lol?
Buurgucci Your point?
Buurgucci D'Angelo and Kanye are both great artists. They're also in two completely different genres of music so........ Shutty.
DOPE.
The horns, the base, the guitar, the percussion, and the voice... 👌🏾
Love this man's music, can't get enough of it. True Artist. Writes and produces his own music, they don't come like this anymore.
Speaks
This here has made music expand its own thought through strokes of beautiful noise and undecided feelings. .. his music travels long distances and thee old brown sugar and voodoo album tells this album to bring more soul and speak to the listening with truth and understanding .....tell these artist to reconstruct their thoughts with true feelings and emotion. .. expand what we call an musical ear. .any one can be fed this music but which ones will continue eat the same meal
Eish wow, this song nje kills me. The old funk in it like wow.
Zama Mlomo such a banger!
