The most beautiful video of the set? Just brilliant. I have no words to describe the beauty of the new face of England as conceived by Polly Jean Harvey.
PJ Harvey really manages to bring the darkness of war very close with this album. Amazing how she revived the history of the battle of Gallipoli and creates beautiful insightful comments about the wars today.
Some amazing artistry in these clips. I like the story here of Seamus Murphy talking to the folks in the belfry, and one of those happened to be the carpenter who'd just done PJ's kitchen. Great work on posting these short films, can't wait to see the final two...
1:34 Joe Strummer Subway. Did not know there was such a place. This is a great album and a great song. The videos by war photographer Seamus Murphy are excellent.
Enjoy being a kid now and see where practice takes you. Don't expect to be a pop-star but never give in wanting to be one and work hard to be the best you can. You never know, when you are 16-18, all your hard work could see your name up in lights. As I keep saying (sorry, I'm a boring old fart!:-), just enjoy yourself and play your music because you love it and it makes you happy. That's what all the very best did! Good luck, Tia! I'll look out for you in a few more years! ;-)
I've seen so many Americans recently who seem to think there is no music outside the US, or what is is worthless in comparison. I've seen many Americans completely convinced that great Brit bands like Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Sabbath, etc, are American, as though no country but the USA could ever produce great music. I have honestly even seen, more than once, The Beatles claimed as American, which I'm sure you agree is extremely frustrating and arrogant... [cont...]
How poignant to discover that this new video has been uploaded in the week when Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington were killed in Misrata. The ability to "reveal the secrets" comes at a price, and it helps if you carry a camera or a guitar, and not a gun. Polly Jean, you have a rare gift for telling the truth.
P.s. I do hope you understand where I'm coming from. I don't think I've explained myself well and I'd hate to give the impression I was being anti-US. That couldn't be further from the truth. I love USA and the American people and really believe there isn't much between UK and US music. In fact, my top 3 bands ever are of 2 American bands and 1 Australian. My top ten are pretty much 50/50 US/UK but I do think overall, the UK has done it that bit better, even when the US did it first.
Dont take it too seriously. The problem with these X-Factor and Brit Got Talent and everything is that it's told kids everywhere that anyone can simply decide to be an artist, immediately make a CD and become a millionaire and live a famous lifestyle. It really isn't that easy and it is actually quite dangerous because when it doesn't happen to somebody, they get depressed and stop trying. It takes a long time of practice and hard work.
@TiaMusique Be careful putting your age up online. I had a quick look at your version of Little Help From My Friends and to be honest, though I couldn't do that at your age, I don't think you should be concentrating on a career in music just yet. Just enjoy playing and keep learning and give it a few years to see where you are. Kids your age who make it are extremely naturally gifted, others have to work hard and earn it. Enjoy your life and your music and see where it takes you.
@lucasboden Erm... and? What does that have to do with anything? It wouldn't work so well with South African, Russian or Scouse accents, neither. What does American accents have to do with anything? Please excuse me if I'm being touchy and/or precious here (and please don't think I'm being aggressive, I know it will read that way but I'm honestly not). Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point but there is a reason why I might do so when seeing an American post as you have... [cont..]
I hope you can understand why. The reason I might have taken offence to your post is that it looks like you're treating US music as a barometer to measure the music of other countries, as though the USA is automatically perched atop the tree and other countries are to look up to it and try to come close to its greatness and be judged kindly by it. There just doesn't seem to be a reason to mention US accents but I'm sure you did so innocently and I apologise if I'm wrongly offended.
Especially when, like myself, you believe Britain to have created the best bands of all time and - although I don't think the US is very far behind at all - British music to the best in the World (we make much of the worst in the World, too!). I know many other people, even Americans feel exactly the same and I'm sure if this thread were polled the results UK Vs US would be extremely close with the UK maybe slightly ahead. As I said, maybe I'm being over sensitive here... [cont...]
Let England shake is, so far, the best album of 2011.
The most beautiful video of the set? Just brilliant. I have no words to describe the beauty of the new face of England as conceived by Polly Jean Harvey.
the music is perfect but Seamus Murphy's images take it onto another level
haunting and beautiful, this woman has such a great spirit..
PJ Harvey really manages to bring the darkness of war very close with this album. Amazing how she revived the history of the battle of Gallipoli and creates beautiful insightful comments about the wars today.
PJ is and always will be one of the greatest artists of her generation
PJ is the greatest female musician and songwriter ever... she is a goddess
A very WW1-2 feel, the lyrics are some of the most touching ever recorded- arousing so many emotions it's not even real!
the best song in this album, IMHO...love you polly!
This woman is pure talent :)
Passed through
The damned mountains,
Went hellwards,
And some of us returned,
And some of us did not.
Pasada de canción!
artista sublime, PJ.

The best man won.
Batman In the Dark Places brought me here.

This wouldn't work so well with American Accents.
The chords in the verse have been stolen from There is a light... by The Smiths. Prefer that but this is ok. Not the best song on the album.
The worst song in the album
