this isn't the album of the year,it's the album of the last 20 years.polly is the perfect example of why the uk has and will forever be the greatest singers, songwriters, musicians, film makers and so much more.
A few weeks ago, I visited the Photo museum in Antwerp (Belgium) and in a room they were playing non-stop PJH videos. I took the headphone and sat there for more than an hour, totally mesmerized and forgetting time. There was only one other man in the room and when I finally stood up he asked me: who is this artist? PJ's work is so powerful that even a guy who had never heard of her was not able to leave for more than an hour...
Probably my favorite song on a truly great album. I like how as an artist she continually challenges herself to do something different and whatever she comes up with next, I am sure to love as much as what came before. So glad I read about Polly Jean Harvey in GQ in the 90's!
Adorable - I love the whole Album - but this song is so meditative - it knows that time passes by - and we will not live forerver - and sometimes we are sad for what is left - and for what is not. For what was achieved and what we missed. Dreams that stayed untouched or unlived...
What a haunting, yet wistful song. Clearly Battleship Hill refers to the Gallipoli campaign of WWI and yet there is something timeless and placeless about it too. A very human song full of sorrow and yet there is this realization contained within that leaves me speechless and sad yet manic and hopeful. Hard to explain.True genius here. Probably the best song dealing with war I have ever heard imho.
This whole album is a stunning and jaw-dropping "calm before the storm," the perfect soundtrack as the world prepares to destroy itself with an all but certain World War 3 on the verge of breaking out. More than any other contemporary musical piece, it accurately describes the sordid state of humanity today (not just the West but the entire world) while cleverly disguising itself by using the double meaning of a (relatively) obscure event in British history. Absolutely brilliant, Polly.
This track is pretty powerful stuff with Polly's haunting vocals rising above an English Folk melody, as if you would be standing on the site of where war that raged on in the trenches all those years ago
Brilliant ~ Love the atmospheric tricks in this song (unison voices (set the fire to the third bar) and piano runs down (be here now)) combined with great voice and lyrics ~ and the war drags on.........but surely this is more than 80 years later ?
Deep congratulations, Ms Harvey. Few artists could boast to have such a flawless career, even more difficult nowadays. And it's been from the very begining, and it appears it will be a lasting thing. On my behalf, thank you very much, honestly, thanks.
Stunningly brilliant album which won Polly the Mercury Prize... The only album/music award I care about... Sadly it beat the also brilliant DIAMOND MINE album by KING CREOSOTE and JON HOPKINS.. That was the only other album that could match this brilliance by Polly Jean... An immense release.
Senti Polly Jean io lo so che è volgare però ogni volta che sento questa canzone me la faccio addosso da quanto è bella. Ti prego spiegami da che pianeta vieni perchè vorrei farci un giro anche io......
@NiklasNydahl there should be three more vids...12 altogether for each of the 12 tracks on the album..I'm really looking forward to the vid for All And Everyone.
@Gui07 I think the big event tomorrow answers that question. Related: I wonder why the princes (and princesses) in direct line of ascension don't become firefighters or taxidrivers or similar dangerous and often thankless careers.
We think It's a quite gloomy song. The music is kinda sad. It sounds like the singer is almost crying. The musicvideo fits the lyric, because the video and the lyric both have a kind of weirdness to it.
Being new to PJ Harvey I am unsure about the controversy her work appears to provoke. Letengland shake is no doubt a highly original piece of work and it is good to see the tradition of poetic material in modern music is recognised by her achievement. However, pop music it is not! Much of the praise and criticism seems to miss the point that it may be generated only as a result of questionable categorization leading to misunderstandings as to what this form of art is and is not.
This album is her masterpeice.

PJ's freakin' important to the music industry as a whole! Without artists like her, I'd never press play for any song again.
Me too man. Made me think of my grandfather (an ANZAC) in France in WW1. Couldn't stop crying when I saw her in Melbourne this year
Brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to this.
If this was to be the last song I ever heard I'd be a happy man. Puts the rest of the simpering "record industry" to shame. Bloody genius!
Most depressing song ever. The video accompanies the lyrical themes wonderfully, but god -damn- if it isn't a tearjerker.

The best song of Let England Shake album..Beautiful!!!
Adorable - I love the whole Album - but this song is so meditative - it knows that time passes by - and we will not live forerver - and sometimes we are sad for what is left - and for what is not. For what was achieved and what we missed. Dreams that stayed untouched or unlived...

Absolutely brilliant, Polly.
My favourite song on Let England Shake - powerful and beautiful.
She is just the most beautiful person, she has a truly wonderful soul and it comes out in her music, her words and her voice. You can't fake that.
how do you even write something so good?
this song is cathartic. Thank you. Nina Pi.
the video and the song so perfect it destroys me
This video is so beautifull. all those lonely ladies.. widows.. really touching.
Pj Harvey has won again!
This track is pretty powerful stuff with Polly's haunting vocals rising above an English Folk melody, as if you would be standing on the site of where war that raged on in the trenches all those years ago
Such a beatiful album, such a beautiful song.
How wonderful to have these beautiful, evocative, sensitive films to accompany the songs. Like the album itself, they cast a spell that does not fade.
I am getting goosebumps just by THINKING of this song. Fantastic.
Thanks Polly Jean, hello from Norway
This is just so so beautiful. This is music.
Gorgeous
oh man. this is so good.
Brilliant ~ Love the atmospheric tricks in this song (unison voices (set the fire to the third bar) and piano runs down (be here now)) combined with great voice and lyrics ~ and the war drags on.........but surely this is more than 80 years later ?
haunting
Beautiful and nostalgic.

An immense release.
this song together with Nick Cave...
Senti Polly Jean io lo so che è volgare però ogni volta che sento questa canzone me la faccio addosso da quanto è bella. Ti prego spiegami da che pianeta vieni perchè vorrei farci un giro anche io......
This song is a bit sad. We were a little confused when the happy tune of the song came on.
Dlhe intro, ale potom vymakany song. V oktobri Praha. Long intro, but then gr8 song. October in Prague.
@NiklasNydahl there should be three more vids...12 altogether for each of the 12 tracks on the album..I'm really looking forward to the vid for All And Everyone.
Will England send its glorious fruits to war again?
Clap clap fucking clap. What a woman.
me
too
The boy at 4:33 looks like Sinead O'Connor in the Nothing Compares to You video.
"fuck/kurwa" this song just made me cry....just did.
Me too. And I'm Chuck Norris.
@Gui07 I think the big event tomorrow answers that question. Related: I wonder why the princes (and princesses) in direct line of ascension don't become firefighters or taxidrivers or similar dangerous and often thankless careers.
Is that a picture of a youthful Glenn Gould around 3:30?... scary resemblance if it isn't.
pot !
^^
@WalsallGooner true, is it a real folk song or she made something of her own? is there a place called battleship hill?
the dude in the beginning, is he speaking dutch?
Is the first line sung to the tune of an old song?
il y a une evp (transcommunication en français) de 0.00 à 0.20 , je ne sais pas si cela ai fait consciemment . réecouté : cela est flagrant...
There is a good connection between the video and the lyrics. PJ Harvey sounds like she is crying and screaming. It's a gloomy song.
Didn't really need the subtitles at the begin.Maybe it was an insurance plan thinking our bloke was a li'l pissed.
We think It's a quite gloomy song. The music is kinda sad. It sounds like the singer is almost crying.
The musicvideo fits the lyric, because the video and the lyric both have a kind of weirdness to it.
But you know, its not nature that's so cruel, its humans. But okay. It's tragic in any case...
@mokkshaa Man up (joking)
@304473108 Perhaps... but I think this is more about the loneliness ....

@schmetterlink He's speaking English. Poorly.
my favourite song from the album but i don't really like the video....they could include some live parts
Me prefers 'War on the Terraces' by The Cockney Rejects.
