One of the top 10 best movies of all time in my book. I have no idea how this could lose Best Picture and Best Actor to Forrest Gump. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins gave two of the best performances ever. Amazing story of friendship and perseverance. The other great prison movie is Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman.
imdb's greatest movies list has shawahank first place all time. while i agree that it is as great as almost any other film, i sure cant agree that it deserves first place, or even a top 10 spot. my own list would start with "silence of the lambs".

The movie was shot in Ohio State Reformatory a real life historical prison build from 1886 to 1910. That why it looks like a castle. Sadly they dont build building like they used to. Its in Mansfield, Ohio and you can visit it.

This prison is located in my hometown, Mansfield Ohio. It is absolutely beautiful on the outside and spooky as hell on the inside. They use it as a haunted house now. Have some rock concerts there as well.
You are always so funny when a movie makes you wait to find out something. "What is fishing???" "What are they betting on???" "What's under the damn rock??????" All a movie has to do to make you lose your mind is create a mystery then make you wait a few minutes to find out the answer. Sometimes, it's my favorite part of your reactions.
I recommend the 1988 Italian film "New Cinema Paradise." Nostalgic images, a soundtrack that makes you think that God dwells, and a final scene dedicated to the art of ``cinema'' itself. It's an old work, but it's sure to touch your heart.
Other good movies with the same kind of feel, L.A. Confidential, and Animal Factory, starring Edward Furlong, who played John Connor in Terminator 2. And it also has Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, Steve Buscemi and Danny Trejo. And Eddie Bunker, who wrote the script. And he also was Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs.

The prison is still there. Its in mansfield ohio. They have a big music festival there every year called inkcarceration. I walked through the prison. They have shawshank props still in there
The best part to what happens to the warden, it's when he opens the Bible, the hammer it's inside of the book of Exodus, the great scape of the slaves 😀. Ironic and deep.

Two guns of the same caliber do not have matching marks on the bullets that are fired from them. Each gun makes a distinctive pattern on the bullets that are fired from it. The ballistic experts needs to fire the gun in question to test it, not merely another gun with the same caliber.

When this movie came out in Finland Shawshank Redemption was translated to Finnish as Rita Hayworth - Key to Freedom. A huge spoiler !!! I saw this movie for the first time few years ago and loved it, despite I knew the Finnish title.
I've watched a couple other reactions to this movie, and usually the reaction to the trial at the beginning is something like "wait, did he do it?" or "I don't think he did it". I love that this reaction was basically "GUILTY AS HELL! STRING 'IM UP!".

If you want to watch similar films, I highly recommend Life is Beautiful/La Vita è Bella (1997), or La Grande Vadrouille (1966) which is a lot more fun. Escape from Alcatraz (1979) is also really good, especially considering that it's based on real life events.

IMHO it's more down to Darabont and co than King in this case given the amount of material to adapt from.
The Green Mile has more meat in it.
