Im not trying to glorify Layne’s passing in any way shape or form. at the end of the day im just a huge fan of Layne & Alice in Chains and wanted to create this for myself and his legion of fans. Layne was described as a sweet man with an amazing sense of humour. Layne’s music saved my life in a time of great despair and im forever grateful for that.

Thanks for doing so it’s much appreciated. I was actually at the concert in 96 in Louisville Ky when they opened for kiss and he OD the next concert in Kansas. $18,000,000 in his checking account when he passed away. I’m sorry but I would have hired security24/7 to keep drug dealers away from him.

Chris Cornell talked about seeing Layne at the mother love bone front man's funeral. Chris said Layne was sobbing uncontrollable and everyone in the room just looked at him and stood there, not knowing what to do. Chris said he always regretted not walking up to Layne and hugging him, telling him it's ok, and helping this broken man...

    • @jjayp1
      @jjayp1 Год назад +17

It's crazy I relatively recently found out that my mom had Chris's exwife and AIC's manager as a client in the mid 2010s. She got to know the lady pretty well actually and had nothing but kind things to say about her and she said their daughter was a sweet kid.
Typical mom thing to do. She asked me out of the blue have you heard of this band something Chains? As if she was thinking this band played the Tractor Tavern for tips every Tuesday or something lol.
I was like you mean Alice in chains? 'yeah, that's it! Were they ever popular?' 🤨
I had no idea what she was getting at. Like she knew her ex husband lived in LA, was in some sort of band and thought nothing more of it. I had to say mom, her daughter you met a few times... Well when her dad died, I watched her sing a tribute to him on Good Morning America and that scene had to have been viewed tens if not hundreds of millions of times, especially Chris' passing being so close to Chester's.
At that point she kinda got the hint that yes, CC and AIC were bigger than she could even imagine.
Unfortunately Layne passed right before my time of diving into music, as I think I was 9. I def remember the day Cobain died; we were driving to a wedding in Bellingham. And every subsequent trip to Ocean Shores passing through Aberdeen and Hoquiam was kind of a downer.
At least now we have Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan) to carry that torch. It was always sad town tho bc I could tell the lumber mills shutting down absolutely destroyed the fabric of the place.
Which is part of the storyline for the early 2000s remake of Walking Tall, they shut down the lumber mill there and turned it into a casino town (which is pretty accurate, I know they were building a huge ass casino between OC and Ab/Hoq) and The Rock was forced to rid corruption via 2x4.

I was at the unplugged show...no one had to prop him up. He wasn't sliding off the chair. He messed up sludge factory a few times. They had to stop recording it and try again at the end of the show which is the one you see. U can tell it was recorded later from the lava lamps. The first fuck up the lamps were stiff. The last one u see it more gooey or however u want to put it. There's ur evidence for that. They didn't really mess up any other songs terribly. I remember frogs the microphone at the end of the song didn't work right and they had to do that again. Other than that most of it went off without a hitch. Fuck, layne.. I wish you were still here...

And I don't believe he was fucked up and that's why he didn't remember the words. At the time it was a new song they never played live. He kept messing up around the same part... prob just forgot the words.. even in the final take of it he still missed the word "even" but it was good enough he kept going and that was the one they used..
He and Jerry were playful throughout the show. I remember I was yelling wahoooo like Homer Simpson through the show. There were some longer breaks between songs. I would yell wahoo during the breaks. Finally Jerry yelled it back and everyone laughed... Metallica wasn't in the front row. They were somewhere in the middle because my friend and his sister were sitting behind them.... and u can hear one of my wahoos at the beginning of would around 9 or 10 seconds in..

Proud to say I got to speak to Layne during the Rockline session. I was cheffing in San Diego at a resort where we had a radio in the kitchen. While listening to the questions people were calling in and asking, I decided to jump into the office and call in. Lo and behold, they took my call. It was regarding Laynes work with the band Second Coming as he was on the last track "It's Coming After". They all sounded so excited and Layne joked about not getting paid for it. Still have the original recording on a cassett tape somewhere in all of my boxes.

I was embarrassed about the way I looked and how far I'd fallen into addiction. Pretty soon people just stop coming to the house. That's what happened with Layne I'd imagine, although I obviously wasn't there and don't know what his situation was with his friends. But I do know that it's typical of someone who is struggling badly with drugs to gradually build a wall that keeps everyone out except for people involved with the drugs.

I was taking courses at the local community college, found out about the show that day, and my girlfriend and I left school early to drive an hour to get there in time. We were in the front row standing in front of Jerry for the whole show. The last song was Would?, which they were just starting to try in front of audiences. It was a small venue, with their bus parked out front, so it was common to meet and talk to the artists after a show. We stood for about 40 minutes talking to Mike, spoke with Layne and Jerry for several minutes, and briefly met Sean before he went on the bus for the night. All of them were great guys who had a true interest in their fans. They made that one of my most memorable nights ever!

Tomorrow is the anniversary of my younger brother’s death. We were a very close family and we always had music playing. He and I overdosed on heroin together. I survived. My brother’s and I were deeply affected by our father’s suicide by hanging. I was helping him after I graduated college He was deep in OxyContin addiction and I soon followed.
Alice In Chains was a big part of our lives. My favorite band since I was a kid. I finally got to see them for my birthday last year.
My father and I bonded over the music. He bought me my first guitar and Alice In Chains song book. My brother and I would play “Would?” “Rooster” “Angry Chair” “Dam That River” “Down in a Hole” and “Nutshell” often, including our high school concert.
I cried when my friends told me about Layne’s death in music class. We were sitting by the radio listening to the news.
Layne, Jerry, Sean and Mike’s music was always there for emotional support through the hard times. Divorce, depression, military service, fighting, addiction, loneliness, suicide love and death.
    Thank you for making this.

I've have been in recovery since 2010 and this sealed the cap for me. I am so grateful for what is left behind in terms of this documentary and the GREAT music Layne left behind which to me is art to the highest degree, an forever art! His songs makes up a huge part of my 'redemption songs. I salute you brother and anybody/everybody who might have assisted you. All love blessings peace and salutations be upon you, his family, and fans! (Intelect, talent, money... it is just fuel to a fire, it doesn't help nothing i fact it will kill you much faster. 12 years is an incredible accomplishment.
When I was first getting clean, I met a man who told me that making it to 30 days was an accomplishment. 12 years is incredible.
I'm just shy of two years sober now, and I can't imagine where my life will be in a decade. Things are so different already. Gained 13lbs, rebuilt my lost muscle, rebuilt my doctor's trust in me, finally getting mental health treatment and the right diagnoses and getting my life back together again.
      Kicking cigarettes is next.
All my best and much love and respect to you, brother.
To anyone else out there living with the struggle, I send the same love and respect, whether you're sober or not.
Believe it or not, you are worth more than you know, you are loved (even if it's by strangers on the internet), and you do matter in this world.

I got high with Layne in NYC in '93. I was 19 going on 20 and just moved from Freeport out on Long Island to Alphabet city. My Brother's (half) Dad got some sweet deal cuz he did 17 yrs in prison for something he didn't do. And part of all that was a first floor, street facing apartment on St.Marks between first and A. Lol. I mean it was perfect. Both of us living there at that age in 1993.......Timed perfectly. Anyway, i knew a guy who made and sold those funky hats and the dudes next door who sold weed. So in walks this guy with short hair and sunglasses. He strikes up a conversation with me. I found out later it's because no one else would talk to him. They were starstruck. Lol. I didn't even know who he was. I mean, i knew the singer of "Man in a box" had blond dreds. So i get him some weed but we did;t smoke it. Was only a dime anyway. He then asks if i can get him dope, heroin and/or coke. And i had literally just did my first bag of dope the week prior. So i copped for him, we went back to the apartment, got high. He smoked a cigarette and left. We talked about dope experiences and not much else. Later i go back to the store and got ambushed with questions. Finally it comes out who he was. I just laughed my ass off. I had no clue. And i am so glad it went down that way. Had i known it was him i might have asked him questions about the band or talked about it too much. I was a kid ya know. So I'm glad i thought he was just another guy looking to get off. I got clean in 2001. I was 27. I wish so much that he had done the same. He was cool, man. We spoke about dope, but he was so chill and had the coolest laid back attitude. Coulda been the drugs, idk, but he seemed cool to me. RIP.

Alice helps people at their lowest point. What a great fucking service to the world. Layne's story is so tragic, such a beautiful soul. And his mom reminds me so much of my mom, who passed away just last year. My mom used to jam mad season because I loved it so much. Wake up and river of decieit were on her every day playlist. The legacy of Layne Staley lives through people like me, and like all of us here who relate to his music so much. I've never heard more emotion in a singers voice, than in Layne's voice. You could feel the pain and isolation in his vocals. His mother Nancy said he knew he had this gift and the fact he was squandering his talent tortured him. If you can listen to a song like Nutshell and not feel it, you don't have a Soul. Let his decline serve as a warning about the horrors of substance abuse. I love that man and his music.

She and I had a therapeutic discussion, she had been offered a line to snort at a party it was heroin she got hooked from that moment on. She never wanted to be a heroin addict, then of course she started shooting.
I was used to frank discussions that went something like this.
“Heroin will ruin your life ruin your health destroy your relationships and then you will suffer and die young”. This would be followed by an offer to arrange medically assisted treatment if they were ready for rehab 👩‍⚕️

Great documentary. I really liked the ending giving all the compliments to Layne. I also heard a pretty interesting new piece of information from Daniel Sarkissian’s interview with Toby Wright, who produced a lot of AIC. Toby said that he was actually driving up to Seattle to record Layne’s vocals for the Taproot song when he got a phone call telling him that Layne passed away. I found that interesting, because it certainly paints a different picture about Layne’s last few months; particularly, that he genuinely was going to record the song, and that it wasn’t just some vague idea that was kicked around.

I cannot say that I knew Demri, (I can't even spell her name properly) however in late 1995 I was in the throes of my heroin addiction, I hung out at a chicks apartment up the block from the mini Mart malstroms (anyone that lived in Seattle in the 80's+90's knows EXACTLY where I am talking about, the apartment building was up Bellvue Ave south from the corner of Bellvue and Denny. Anyway one day a tiny chick with short short hair that actually looked like a little boy showed up needing some dope & coke, she told me her name was Demri and she used to date Layne Staley, I didn't doubt her because the gal whose apartment it was knew her and verified it, anyway we got some drugs and I got her high, she cried because I hit a tiny vien for her on the inside of the wrist (you junkies know the sad one I am talking about, we laid around and talked, she was very kind and sweet, she showed me her scar from her open heart surgery to install a pig heart valve from her having bacterial endocarditis, she was SOOOO FRAIL, this is a very sad, yet VERY TRUE STORY, sadly it is aside frome seeing Kurt hanging around on Broadway and Denny by the payphone trying to score the closest I ever came to the SCENE as we called it, I feel guilty sharing this very intimate interaction with a kind, sick fellow addict ner the end of her life (she died within the year) WOW I can't believe that was 27 years ago, happily I survived and am currently clean, living North of Seattle in Everett, this movie brought it all back, life is so strange, anyway hope that was an interesting insite into the co star of the documentary, which was pretty fucking cool dude, thanks for reading my ramble, APM....

Gen X, here (1975). Was into the Grunge scene in a big way back then. The '80s-'90s were a hell of a time to be alive and young. If we were to read the roll call of the musicians of that era that are no longer with us, it makes one wonder if any of our Alt icons are going to live to see old age. Of course, that, itself is one of the characteristics that make the music and larger than life personalities so representative of the times. Grunge burned so brightly that it was impossible to sustain that level of intensity for any substantial amount of time. But, MY GOD!! WHAT A TIME!!

Even still to this day I can’t get enough of Laynes voice 🎤🗣️🎶. Along with Cantrells 🎸 & rhythm. Just their vibe ☺️ when they’re on point ✔️And I also realized that Nirvana was just lots of put-together words ,sounds and music🥁🎸 🎤I think it was more about the feeling you get from their songs rather than their message or meanings ,unless it was a specific song with a specific message. ! And you that’s why they were so unique,as well.. in the way their music made us Feel at that time… Not that Cobain was a prolific lyricist or anything but with AIC , we got the full package.!! LAYNE’s Vocal PROWESS🤴🏼..theirMusic 🎶,the lyrics and meanings of their songs, unison it was just perfect 🤩 when they were all on point! !! It was different type of vibe 🤘🏽.. yet, As a young adult and having lived a little more& not a pubescent teenager , AIC resonants with me WAY more today and actually for some time now. (years)! I put AIC in my personal tier with Led Zeppelin, Cream, Black Sabbath, and Journey, when it comes to vocalists ! I love AIC. Flaws and all !! 58:52 Damn, that's so crazy. I was a freshman in college in 02 when Layne died. I know exactly where that apartment is, we used to walk to that Kinko's a lot (that was back when only spoiled kids had laptops and digital copies of anything weren't an option so presentations had to be binded and all that.
Haha I actually took these sub shop coupons they dropped off at our house and thanks to Kinko's I had a free 6" sub every day for almost 2 quarters.
I'm almost positive at the time the Rainbow Tavern was completely blacked out with no windows so I wonder if that factored in to why Layne chose it. Because Blue Moon was a dive but it could get fairly busy.
And just a couple blocks past the old Petco there was a Taco Time we hit up a lot. And across the street there was this REALLY sketchy rent a hottub by the hour place that I could only assume was used by readers of the classified ads on Seattle Weekly.
It's eerie to me that he was in such a fragile state and I walked right past his condo many times. Looking back, I was under the impression that he had passed much earlier than 2002, probably due to his 5yr hibernation effectively rendering him as such.
I actually found out shortly after Cornell passed that my mom knew Susan Silver pretty well...except all she knew was she managed a local band. It wasn't until she told me that her ex husband passed away and was 'I think kinda well known'.
Haha at that point I said 'yeah, kinda. I only just watched their daughter sing at his memorial on TV that had to have been seen by hundreds of millions of people at least.' To which my mom replied, 'yeah, she's such a polite kid. Very quiet and respectful.'
She still didn't quite grasp that her client and family were mega celebrities. But my grandpa died in Vietnam while my mom was in HS so I made her watch the video for Rooster.
But man even hearing Layne do interviews is uncomfortable. It's apparent that he wasn't comfortable in his skin and thus awkward as well as just sounding like a gentle soul. And btw I already have held onto my grudge against Metallica for shilling for the greedy record labels and ruining Napster. But g'damn my blood was near boiling when I saw those pricks treating Laynes health like some cheap joke. F them, especially that Lars stiff.
Thanks for the video, very informative.

My next door neighbor from West Seattle (we went to Disneyland as kids) played in a band and the last time I saw him in 2014 he told me he just got his pilots license and his band recently opened for Andrew WK and The Cure (?). Less than a year later his parents (who were essentially my 2nd parents) found him in his apartment on Capitol Hill with a needle in his arm.
At that moment I swore off of every 'drug' that was not officially prescribed. I've had to kick tramadol, lithium and paxal which were all a nightmare; I've also lived with anxiety and depression so I feel like I can empathize with these guys in a way. But anyone who's successfully kicked heroin is a true badass.
Hell, we see these docs about the pill mills in Florida in the late 2000s. And I don't condone that approach but almost anything is worth trying when you're losing 100k addicts a year and state run media tells you 'stop complaining, everything's wonderful' as Bill Maher basically said. Stop bitching, you have $100TVs and free porn on your phone. Real empathic character, that Bill Maher

I used to live a block away, I was in my 20s. I walked by his place every day as well. So sad. So weird. So tragic.

This is so tragic. I've loved so many AIC songs, but knew nothing of this decline until recently. Having been born in the same decade as Layne, I see parallels between his life and many I've known, broken family, drugs, early death. Coming up in the late 60s, early 70s was somehow very unguided in my experience. No one I know had his talent though. Truly a gift and I'm glad he succeeded in making the world notice him.. people are still reacting to him, even Tribals from the middle east (they call themselves Trybals.)
I quit drinking and drugs at age 15, with a 12 step program..so lucky, blessed. Lost numerous family members to addiction. It's an ugly condition that sucks the life from the addict, and kills all relationships.
    RIP, beautiful being. So sorry.

Thank you for this beautiful tribute to a terrific individual. Layne was full of talent and was obviously highly intelligent and sensitive. I don't think he ever really wanted all of the fame and fortune. He just wanted to create beautiful things. Just think of all of the other stuff he could have done if he had learned to deal with his pain in a different way.

Between 1997 and 2002, I played dozens of gigs with 3 or 4 different obscure bands in the Rainbow and the Blue Moon taverns which were about 150 feet from Layne's U-district condo, which I was unaware at that time. It's weird to think he was within earshot of my bass amp, a man with such a monster talent, doing nothing.
