I went to Thailand for an one month holiday in 2003 & stayed. One of thing that I noticed was almost all the trouble that farangs got into involved alcohol. Thus I decided that if I stayed in Thailand I wouldn’t drink. Best decision I ever made. 21 years now without a drink!

I came on the podcast to speak with Pete to address my mistakes , in no way am I gaining anything from putting myself out there for the world to see . I had some very amazing experiences and lived a happy life up until what I said . Hopefully someone can learn from my mistakes and not suffer the consequences I received.

This my 24th year living in los & no shit every day feels like my 1st preety much, am very blessed & thankful. I remember after a cpl yr asking immigration how long can i stay/ update visas etc. They said behave yourself & can stay forever, its up to you. Good policy imo but yep 💩 happens. I used to go into prisons to help out folk who were struggling & got plenty sad as stories but bottom line is stick to the law & all will be good. Our detention centers in America are the Hyatt Regency compared to Thialand and Japan. Once in Japan I underwent a 2 hour interrogation with a Japanese investor so close to my face I felt his spital spraying on me. Then at the end he tells me, "You can leave now would you like a ride" I said no thank you I'll walk.
Try China. My husband, son and I were on a bus going between 2 rural cities. At a police stop in the middle of nowhere, my husband was taken off by the police into a small room where by way of charades he was " interogated" about our intentions. They kept him for about 25 minutes before letting him back on the bus. We never did know what they actually wanted but if he had got bolsjie, it could very well have ended differently.

For some reason, this video reminded me of another incident involving two visitors from the US. I don't remember the RUclipsr's name, but he said two US guys were arrested at the Bangkok airport because a single bullet was in one of their luggage. It was a strange case. Suspicion arose after their arrest and the US guys demanded an investigation. They believed someone from the Thai airport planted that bullet in their luggage. The US Government got involved and did an investigation. Strangely enough, no other US traveler had this problem again in Thailand. It's as if the investigation scared off whoever was doing this to visitors from the US.

A hard life lesson learned due to lack of wisdom. This young man was very brave to share his story publically in the hope that others will watch this and not make the same silly mistakes.
I do drink and drive too since years in Thailand but i won't deny that it is really WRONG. I have been stopped and breathalyzed 4 times, only paid a bribe of 1700 THB once because I'm not dumb enough to do anything else than accepting it's an offense and be overly friendly and showing remorse to the police.

I spent 10 days there on my way home after a short 6 month imprisonment in Chiang Mai for weed before it was legal, it's fucked in there, it would take half an hour to type what I saw in just ten days, it was June 2015.

There is no story here ... drunk driving is a serious matter and while most of the year the authorities will turn a blind eye to this, especially if suitably palmed off, at Songkran they are hyper-vigilant in view of the annual carnage on the roads . Well done to the Thai authorities. Glad the system worked in this instance.

Resisting life as it shows up is a lesson in itself- it will teach you respect regardless. Young and walking right into life situations on life’s terms. I felt compassion for him and watch him now owning his shortcomings. Good on him. I made similar errors as a young woman yet caught on quick consequences do occur and pain is an astute teacher. @@clivebaxter6354 Everyone being deported stages @ IDC. If you 'cannot' pay the fare, meaning is multiplied per circumstance, the stay @ IDC is magnified. Plain and simple version is if you have the money, you can get out.

Cheers man , Josh here from the interview. The main purpose was to shed light on the lost souls within those walls . I still have nightmares to this day and it's something I'll probably never be able to erase from my memory sadly ..as I said In the interview I learnt my lesson the hard way and hopefully this could help others so they don't end up locked up and deported.
So let me get this right, he was working illegally and also caught drunk driving and has overstayed his visa, he then most likely made the Thai police lose face, when he was talking to them in Thai. I can understand why they arrested him and deported him. I hope his fiancée waits for him, 5 years is a long time, I did 2 years not seeing my Thai misses and that was hard enough. As someone who works in a Aussie prison, the strip search is pretty much the same all over, the difference is we’re not allowed to make them squat and cough to look up their anus, it’s against their human rights. Noodles is a commodity/currency in prisons all the over the world. At least he realised that he needed a degree and started doing one, I hope he finishes it.

Texas Prisons do the same, one long chain with prison bound guys attached. The inmates in local jails call it "catching the chain" getting a number and riding the bluebird express(prison bus)
For the people that is stuck in there you need to contact Thailand UNCHR to help them because they are stateless their country hasn't accepted them because no proof of who they are theres no passport to verify their country thats why they haven't been sent back.
The guys inside , when eventually (maybe 2/3 weeks after writing a request to contact the embassy ) are allowed to use their phones and contact the embassy and only then their family will find out their whereabouts.. it's a shame

I have known a few farangs caught DUI, none got deported. Seems Josh was very unlucky, he never mentioned a lawyer, but that would be my priority in a situation like this. Seems his reaction at arrest caused his problems. It's a warning to anyone living in Thailand, show respect at times like this
25 minutes in.... No matter how much of the local language you think you might know, always insist on an interpreter and documents in your language. Never sign anything you don't understand 100%. First call should always be the embassy or consulate. As soon as they get involved, the likelihood of being overly punished should be reduced, but also, they'll know the system, it's what they do every single week. Agreeing to everything and confessing, I know of the Thai culture, but without knowing the consequences of what you're agreeing to.... not wise.

Having been involved (professionally)with Consulates/Embassy’s and as an American, those facilities are for diplomacy and data mining. @@jonmarchilgers384 having worked all over the world, and been in many a British Consulate and Embassy, I can 100% guarantee that one of the main roles they undertake is indeed as a Crown representative and to look after and provide support and assistance to visiting nationals, particularly those that find themselves in trouble. Case in point, a colleague found himself stranded, he went to the Embassy who ensured he had a place to sleep for the night, a meal and money for fuel the following day. If the US isn't doing the same, then that's US citizen's loss.
Something's not ringing true here: if he was a foreigner, teaching English, earning small money in Bangkok, how could he afford "taking a drive 2 hours to Kanchanaburi" every now and then? It's not cheap to buy a car and pay for the upkeep on a measly teacher's salary. I don't buy this fancy story...😏

I know nearly all bar owners in expat area (Infact my wife’s family run one of the main ones) and majority of bar owners in “Thai area”. Down near the skywalk. So then: When he was stopped at the roadblock, at that time, how many days had he overstayed? And, what was the nature of his overstay? Was it just a failure to do the 90-day report? Or, had he actually overstayed the date on his visa? Meaning that he should have left at some date before he was stopped at the roadblock? This can be made clearer next time he relates this story. (Very unfortunate. And, this is a reminder to always remain vigilant about visa/reporting requirements when in Thailand.)
Why didnt he bribe the police? My wife who is Thai, told me that her friend drives in Bangkok really drunk all the time, and just bribe the police if she is stopped.
Not all police accept a bribe anywhere and certainly not from a foreigner.. It is an insult and a further criminal penalty if they are honest and have pride.
Being sensible with backup bribe money is essential in that country. However, whilst drinking this discapline can be hard to maintain. Also, as they're such insufferable thieves, no matter where your vehicular hiding place, it is hard to check that it's still there as well as that someone hasn't seen you checking in any occasion where others will be travelling with you. He should have made the call immediately to get it sorted out, then he'd've never had to go to court. The problem only usually occurs if there's some problem with your phone in the cells and you can't access anyone's number to call them for that reason. Another one is that they won't let you out to get money, so if you land in court you can't get out in order to use the ATM. You need to get it all sorted out ASAP. The issue with immigration is that they're much more corrupt than the police as they sell double-priced plane tickets via their own agency run by the boss of the IDC. The people running the rooms are in their pockets, so anyone buying an actual ticket can be killed in the cell.
A few contridications. He said because he was in jail he could not do 90-day report, which caused him to go on overstay, which intself makes no sense, then later at 43.00 alluded to the fact that he was already on overstay when he was pulled over. Regardless, horrible experience and I am glad he is out with s story to tell.
Taking a three hour drive, inebriated, loaded with beer, as a farang in Thailand? Dumb move. Too many young guys come here and act recklessly. I have lived here seven years, no problems. I never forget I am a foreigner here, and never confront Thai authorities, whether they be the police, immigration officers, etc. That is a sure way to find yourself in trouble.

Thailand is my home away from home . My Thai family , friends ,job ,car and beautiful fiance all had to deal with this and as of now I've lost all of that while I'm bummed . I came clean about my mistakes and wore my heart on my sleeve

Some of it has to do with them being annoyed by legitimate things, like you and your age group generally not caring about anyone but yourselves. These are the same people who tell everyone how awful Thailand is, and yet they're the first ones calling for the head of anyone who makes a mistake in their beloved Thailand. These are not healthy people. You told your story, it will help a few people, you realize you made mistakes. You're f'n good bro; you're fine! You have the rest of your life to look forward to. And you don't have to lose your connection to SE Asia at all, and not to Thailand forever. You're fine.
He received exactly the punishment that was appropriate for his actions. Worked in Thailand for years without appropriate qualifications, without a valid visa or work permit. Illegal work. Driving without a valid driving license - the international driving license is only valid for a maximum of 3 months - driving under the influence of alcohol.
So was this guy deported for the drink driving, the working illegally in Bkk, working illegally in Kanchanaburi or the overstay ? I think his hopes of return are somewhat optimistic......

I don’t mean to scare you, but in case you don’t think it can get any worse, think again - you’ll never be able to get a work permit for life in Thailand now bcos of your criminal record. It’s permanent. So you’ll have to work at a hellhole school on awful wages on another visa, but it will never be attached to a work permit so you’ll be illegal. And if ur caught, because u already have a history, ur going to be in 20 times more hurt than the few days of prison you just had. Try Japan or Korea instead

If you drink and drive and you are caught just apologise, smile and shut your mouth up! Pay if you are given the opportunity, don’t even bargain and everything will be sorted out smoothly in less than 5 minutes.
He said he's visa ran out when he was in custody. They kept him long because of holidays , every thing was close, allso said he had a illegal work visa...
It is Amnesty International, who must become involved there imideately. It is an anti international and human rights atrossity to hold innocent persons without any procedure and legal trial for 8, 16 or even 20 years. Somebody must refere this to the UN-International Court in Den-Haag.
all of my friends and co workers have been arrested for drunk driving at least once. 5k on site fixies things. if you don't have the $ in your pocket, and the police will not drive you to an ATM, then you get in the system ... price goes up big from there and you are looking at a night in jail.
The time I was stopped in 2018, the breath test was a fixed number and they followed me to the ATM, the girl that was following me hone didn't have a drink and she got the same number as me, 20,000 baht for me, 2,000 baht for her...
I had 12 days overstay last time and reportet myself in the airport .Paid 500 bath for each day fine. Did i get ban? I dont think they mentioned anything.
We can all make errors of judgment, but the consequences can be harsh. Think Josh got off lightly. Saddening how people can get lost in a system, friends and family don’t know where they are, just presumed missing and they’re living a life in limbo. Suppose the one positive of Josh’s story is getting the other person out and home.

Nice story and pity for you ending up in that situation, however I'm a bit confused, you were stopped and arrested for drink-driving? How did they know you were working illegally? Why were you unable to pay Immigration a fine for a few days overstay especially given the fact that you were unable to extend your visa? South African nationals are entitled to a 60 day visa free stay with an option to extend for a further 30 days at the discretion of the Immigration Bureau - How long had you been in Thailand on the day of your arrest?

Interesting. Kinda sorta sounded like he admitted at the end that he was on overstay when they pulled him over, which would explain everything he went through. You didn't follow up so I'm not sure. Some comments are a bit get off ya soapbox mate, most of us made mistakes when we were young which could have gone a different direction. To me this lad has done this interview to own up to his mistakes and warn others to not do the same or there maybe similar consequences. Having a car load of beer may have helped expedite the arrest, a nice confiscation before the holidays. He is young and can bounce back, good luck to him. Is he still with his Thai fiancée?
5 years ban but can you go back after that? I dont advise anyone coming to Thailand or any south asian country especially Vietnam or china to break the law, these are full military countries the law isnt the same for foreigners, you need to respect the law at all times dont follow the locals cause you are not local and will get in trouble in the long run.
We welcome all tourists to Thailand regardless of the country you're from, and we would appreciate that you adhere to our culture while you're here and leave as soon as your visa expires without renewing it because we don't appreciate farangs who come to work or for long stay.

This my 24th year living in los & no shit every day feels like my 1st preety much, am very blessed & thankful. I remember after a cpl yr asking immigration how long can i stay/ update visas etc. They said behave yourself & can stay forever, its up to you. Good policy imo but yep 💩 happens. I used to go into prisons to help out folk who were struggling & got plenty sad as stories but bottom line is stick to the law & all will be good.

Our detention centers in America are the Hyatt Regency compared to Thialand and Japan. Once in Japan I underwent a 2 hour interrogation with a Japanese investor so close to my face I felt his spital spraying on me. Then at the end he tells me, "You can leave now would you like a ride" I said no thank you I'll walk.
Investing sounds like serious business in Japan.

Try China. My husband, son and I were on a bus going between 2 rural cities. At a police stop in the middle of nowhere, my husband was taken off by the police into a small room where by way of charades he was " interogated" about our intentions. They kept him for about 25 minutes before letting him back on the bus. We never did know what they actually wanted but if he had got bolsjie, it could very well have ended differently.

For some reason, this video reminded me of another incident involving two visitors from the US. I don't remember the RUclipsr's name, but he said two US guys were arrested at the Bangkok airport because a single bullet was in one of their luggage. It was a strange case. Suspicion arose after their arrest and the US guys demanded an investigation. They believed someone from the Thai airport planted that bullet in their luggage. The US Government got involved and did an investigation. Strangely enough, no other US traveler had this problem again in Thailand. It's as if the investigation scared off whoever was doing this to visitors from the US.

I do drink and drive too since years in Thailand but i won't deny that it is really WRONG. I have been stopped and breathalyzed 4 times, only paid a bribe of 1700 THB once because I'm not dumb enough to do anything else than accepting it's an offense and be overly friendly and showing remorse to the police.
The UN should get on Thailand’s case for the legal limbo it has put people in in its prisons!

I spent 10 days there on my way home after a short 6 month imprisonment in Chiang Mai for weed before it was legal, it's fucked in there, it would take half an hour to type what I saw in just ten days, it was June 2015.

There is no story here ... drunk driving is a serious matter and while most of the year the authorities will turn a blind eye to this, especially if suitably palmed off, at Songkran they are hyper-vigilant in view of the annual carnage on the roads . Well done to the Thai authorities. Glad the system worked in this instance.

Resisting life as it shows up is a lesson in itself- it will teach you respect regardless. Young and walking right into life situations on life’s terms. I felt compassion for him and watch him now owning his shortcomings. Good on him. I made similar errors as a young woman yet caught on quick consequences do occur and pain is an astute teacher. I feel sorry he lost access to Thailand. Great coverage, 🙏🏻

Quite a story. Terrible luck in the beginning and fortunate in the end. But hearing about some of those guys being in IDC for decades is brutal.

Cheers man , Josh here from the interview. The main purpose was to shed light on the lost souls within those walls . I still have nightmares to this day and it's something I'll probably never be able to erase from my memory sadly ..as I said In the interview I learnt my lesson the hard way and hopefully this could help others so they don't end up locked up and deported.

So let me get this right, he was working illegally and also caught drunk driving and has overstayed his visa, he then most likely made the Thai police lose face, when he was talking to them in Thai. I can understand why they arrested him and deported him. I hope his fiancée waits for him, 5 years is a long time, I did 2 years not seeing my Thai misses and that was hard enough. As someone who works in a Aussie prison, the strip search is pretty much the same all over, the difference is we’re not allowed to make them squat and cough to look up their anus, it’s against their human rights. Noodles is a commodity/currency in prisons all the over the world. At least he realised that he needed a degree and started doing one, I hope he finishes it.
I also think that by the way he pronounces certain things, he doesn't speak Thai nearly as well as he thinks he does, I can almost guarantee that.
He was deported for visa situation. DUI is not a big deal in Thailand

Texas Prisons do the same, one long chain with prison bound guys attached. The inmates in local jails call it "catching the chain" getting a number and riding the bluebird express(prison bus)
For the people that is stuck in there you need to contact Thailand UNCHR to help them because they are stateless their country hasn't accepted them because no proof of who they are theres no passport to verify their country thats why they haven't been sent back.

No matter how much of the local language you think you might know, always insist on an interpreter and documents in your language. Never sign anything you don't understand 100%.
First call should always be the embassy or consulate. As soon as they get involved, the likelihood of being overly punished should be reduced, but also, they'll know the system, it's what they do every single week.
Agreeing to everything and confessing, I know of the Thai culture, but without knowing the consequences of what you're agreeing to.... not wise.

Having been involved (professionally)with Consulates/Embassy’s and as an American, those facilities are for diplomacy and data mining. Certainly call them;however, don’t hold your breath for the Calvary. Thank you for sharing your story. It’s clearly visible that the experience had a profound impact on your life.
@@jonmarchilgers384 having worked all over the world, and been in many a British Consulate and Embassy, I can 100% guarantee that one of the main roles they undertake is indeed as a Crown representative and to look after and provide support and assistance to visiting nationals, particularly those that find themselves in trouble.
Case in point, a colleague found himself stranded, he went to the Embassy who ensured he had a place to sleep for the night, a meal and money for fuel the following day.
If the US isn't doing the same, then that's US citizen's loss.
Something's not ringing true here: if he was a foreigner, teaching English, earning small money in Bangkok, how could he afford "taking a drive 2 hours to Kanchanaburi" every now and then?
It's not cheap to buy a car and pay for the upkeep on a measly teacher's salary.

So then: When he was stopped at the roadblock, at that time, how many days had he overstayed? And, what was the nature of his overstay? Was it just a failure to do the 90-day report? Or, had he actually overstayed the date on his visa? Meaning that he should have left at some date before he was stopped at the roadblock? This can be made clearer next time he relates this story. (Very unfortunate. And, this is a reminder to always remain vigilant about visa/reporting requirements when in Thailand.)

Why didnt he bribe the police? My wife who is Thai, told me that her friend drives in Bangkok really drunk all the time, and just bribe the police if she is stopped.
Not all police accept a bribe anywhere and certainly not from a foreigner.. It is an insult and a further criminal penalty if they are honest and have pride.

Too risky alone.
Being sensible with backup bribe money is essential in that country.
However, whilst drinking this discapline can be hard to maintain. Also, as they're such insufferable thieves, no matter where your vehicular hiding place, it is hard to check that it's still there as well as that someone hasn't seen you checking in any occasion where others will be travelling with you.
He should have made the call immediately to get it sorted out, then he'd've never had to go to court. The problem only usually occurs if there's some problem with your phone in the cells and you can't access anyone's number to call them for that reason.
Another one is that they won't let you out to get money, so if you land in court you can't get out in order to use the ATM.
You need to get it all sorted out ASAP.
The issue with immigration is that they're much more corrupt than the police as they sell double-priced plane tickets via their own agency run by the boss of the IDC.
The people running the rooms are in their pockets, so anyone buying an actual ticket can be killed in the cell.
A few contridications. He said because he was in jail he could not do 90-day report, which caused him to go on overstay, which intself makes no sense, then later at 43.00 alluded to the fact that he was already on overstay when he was pulled over. Regardless, horrible experience and I am glad he is out with s story to tell.

Taking a three hour drive, inebriated, loaded with beer, as a farang in Thailand? Dumb move. Too many young guys come here and act recklessly. I have lived here seven years, no problems. I never forget I am a foreigner here, and never confront Thai authorities, whether they be the police, immigration officers, etc. That is a sure way to find yourself in trouble.

.. Thailand is my home away from home . My Thai family , friends ,job ,car and beautiful fiance all had to deal with this and as of now I've lost all of that while I'm bummed . I came clean about my mistakes and wore my heart on my sleeve

And most of them have done long distance relationships at some point as well, though to mixed results. What I'm saying is, don't listen to any of the haters on here. For a couple of decades the older expats have been incredibly harsh when judging younger expatss or vacationers online. Some of it has to do with them being annoyed by legitimate things, like you and your age group generally not caring about anyone but yourselves. But most of it comes from a place of deep resentment; they wish they were in Thailand when they were your age instead of having a relatively awful 20 years of their life pre/post divorce to their ex-Western-wives. These are the same people who tell everyone how awful Thailand is, and yet they're the first ones calling for the head of anyone who makes a mistake in their beloved Thailand. These are not healthy people. You told your story, it will help a few people, you realize you made mistakes. You're f'n good bro; you're fine! You have the rest of your life to look forward to. And you don't have to lose your connection to SE Asia at all, and not to Thailand forever. You're fine.
He received exactly the punishment that was appropriate for his actions. Worked in Thailand for years without appropriate qualifications, without a valid visa or work permit. Illegal work. Driving without a valid driving license - the international driving license is only valid for a maximum of 3 months - driving under the influence of alcohol.
My internationell driving license is valid for three years, u dont know shit!

You purchased a one year valid idp , the laws of that license are you can only use it for 3 months in any one country , you can leave the country then go back in and have another 3 months , hope this helps with the confusion

I don’t mean to scare you, but in case you don’t think it can get any worse, think again - you’ll never be able to get a work permit for life in Thailand now bcos of your criminal record. It’s permanent. So you’ll have to work at a hellhole school on awful wages on another visa, but it will never be attached to a work permit so you’ll be illegal. And if ur caught, because u already have a history, ur going to be in 20 times more hurt than the few days of prison you just had. Try Japan or Korea instead

all of my friends and co workers have been arrested for drunk driving at least once. 5k on site fixies things. if you don't have the $ in your pocket, and the police will not drive you to an ATM, then you get in the system ... price goes up big from there and you are looking at a night in jail.

The time I was stopped in 2018, the breath test was a fixed number and they followed me to the ATM, the girl that was following me hone didn't have a drink and she got the same number as me, 20,000 baht for me, 2,000 baht for her...
I had 12 days overstay last time and reportet myself in the airport .Paid 500 bath for each day fine. Did i get ban? I dont think they mentioned anything.

Nice story and pity for you ending up in that situation, however I'm a bit confused, you were stopped and arrested for drink-driving? How did they know you were working illegally? Why were you unable to pay Immigration a fine for a few days overstay especially given the fact that you were unable to extend your visa? South African nationals are entitled to a 60 day visa free stay with an option to extend for a further 30 days at the discretion of the Immigration Bureau - How long had you been in Thailand on the day of your arrest?
They didn't know about my work situation,however I was over the limit and my passport couldn't get extended while I was locked up 😢

Interesting. Kinda sorta sounded like he admitted at the end that he was on overstay when they pulled him over, which would explain everything he went through. You didn't follow up so I'm not sure. That’s fucked what they’re doing to those poor guys in detainment.
Some comments are a bit get off ya soapbox mate, most of us made mistakes when we were young which could have gone a different direction.
To me this lad has done this interview to own up to his mistakes and warn others to not do the same or there maybe similar consequences.
Having a car load of beer may have helped expedite the arrest, a nice confiscation before the holidays.

I dont advise anyone coming to Thailand or any south asian country especially Vietnam or china to break the law, these are full military countries the law isnt the same for foreigners, you need to respect the law at all times dont follow the locals cause you are not local and will get in trouble in the long run.
