    I just want to break this down for you guys because I think it needs to be said.
    The man Del Rio trying, and failing, to stare down is a seven foot tall, one thousand pound mass of muscle, bone, cybernetics, and seething fury wrapped up in humanity's finest assortment of tank-grade armor, electronics, combat systems, and ballistic weave that gives him the combat capability equal to that of an entire armored division. He is only one of a handful of individuals identified by the UNSC as a "hyper-lethal" vector, and by all accounts may be the last one left standing at this point. To the Covenant, he was a force of absolute destruction, not just *a* demon, but *the* Demon, with a capital D, who has arguably personally killed more of their forces than the rest of Humanity combined and taught the Prophets what true fear feels like. His achievements include blowing up an ancient structure seen as sacred to the Covies, taking a Covenant nuke and shoving it back up the ass it came out of, saving Earth TWICE (possibly three times), killing at least one Prophet himself and assisting in the deaths of the other two, going to an even BIGGER ancient alien structure outside the Milky Way, blowing THAT ONE up, defeating an even MORE ancient eldritch horror, returning to the Milky Way and crashing on an alien death planet, and killing his way out of that and back onto the Infinity. He is, arguably, the MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN THE ENTIRE GALAXY, and the only individuals who are even *remotely* capable of killing him are smart enough to know that they shouldn't if they value their own wellbeing. And this doesn't even count the mental scars he's struggled with along the way or the fact that despite it all, he's STILL keeping it together.
    And Del Rio had the gall, the absolute egotistical *A U D A C I T Y* , to demand he hand over the one companion that has been with him since the beginning, to which he responds by more or less saying, "over my dead fucking body, sir."
    Del Rio would have been safer yelling down the barrel of a SuperMAC.

    • @J0J0Reference
      @J0J0Reference 4 года назад +708

      Fucking beautifully put. Honestly Del Rio deserves a Medal of Honor for even thinking about doing that, let alone ATTEMPTING it. If I had to take a guess, Del Rio probably served a more comfy job even during the human covenant war, he was probably in charge of some low tier space ship that almost never saw combat, he probably never even seen reports on the rings or the flood up until the end, and more than likely is going crazy himself because he is dealing with a force outside of covie fanatics with even better gear, while he is falling back on basic tactics, has no tactics of his own, and relies HEAVILY on only spartans to get important jobs done.
      The man is the OPPOSITE of a good leader. Both Keys knew what they were doing, knew who could do it, knew what was on the line, and knew they could not always rely on their big green killing machine, and knew they had to take risks even if it meant risking their lives to save everyone, Captain Keys falling to the flood as he thought he could find a upper hand on them and lacked information on the flood, and Miranda Keys dying in a attempt to save Johnson and the galaxy as a whole, but they both went down fighting for what was right, then Del Rio is just fucking pissing his pants because the war hero who pretty much out ranks him in merit 100 times over is not taking his orders, Del Rio is a joke.

    Technically, since the Chief is part of a Spec Ops outfit attached to a combat zone, That gives him higher rank in a combat zone than Del Rio. Chief has the authority to have him court marshaled. Easily the most badass two words ever spoken in the Halo franchise so far. A military sci-fi story about a supersoldier who does the impossible in service to his planet, his species, the galaxy... And when the bureaucracy fails and he can no longer do the right thing and still follow his orders, he doesn't do it with uncharacteristic disrespect or bravado. He calmly, respectfully, but firmly says, "No, sir."
    Those two words encapsulate so much of Chief's character in the games and the books. Existing in a rigid military structure that abducted him as a child, turned him into a killing machine, and yet his entire life is now devoted to combating the greatest threats humanity has ever faced. He follows orders but he does it HIS way, and that's why he's such a compelling character. Lord Hood never would have even thought to "give the Covenant back their bomb." That was a wild, insane, borderline suicidal idea Chief had, so he asked for permission and got it.
    "No, sir." The first time we ever see Chief disobey a direct order. But he still does it within the confines of the hierarchy in which he was raised, in which he'll probably die.

    I feel like the story really gave Del Rio the short end of the stick. Here we have a man who's trying to do what's best for his ship, his crew, and he believes they would lose and likely get *destroyed* if they fought the Didact and Covenant together like that again. Then in comes Chief with what is likely the most batshit insane story Del Rio's ever heard thanks to the Librarian (granted, a LIVING FORERUNNER is out and about, but still), and Chief says they *have* to go after the Didact. Del Rio believes it would be a fruitless effort, and would leave the entire crew of the Infinity, and Chief, stranded or dead. If they instead retreat, however, they could amass an even greater force and fight against the Didact's forces with much better odds of winning. But Chief insists that they can't let him leave Requiem. He's not going for it. Then in comes Cortana, who short-circuits and likely fries some of the equipment around her just from getting angry. Of course Del Rio is going to think she's defective and a threat to the ship. In my opinion, while not being 100% reasonable, Del Rio's decisions in this cutscene make sense.
    It's a shame that the story otherwise made him as unlikeable as possible. First in his interactions with the Chief before AND after this cutscene, as well as the fact that he left Chief on Requiem, and did very little to help besides sending in Lasky to stop him. At the very least, he could've left Chief with a ship capable of leaving the planet, if they had one. The game basically shoves him to the side, and it's a shame because we could've had an actually interesting story dynamic with him, since he could've been someone that opposes Chief in some ways, but with good reasons.

    *groan* Having just watched this scene out of curiosity on seeing meme screenshot of "I am ordering you to X", it surprises me how much the officers delivery ruins the scene at 0:52. For any captain wouldn't petulantly scream it, like he's an NPC from GTA. He's a fully commissioned captain aboard a military warship. He would calmly issue said order with all the authority and might of the UNSC backing him. Picture how much more impact this would have if the captain had acted with the power of his station, rather than a cartoon villain.
    Imagine for a moment, someone like Captain Keyes ordering the chief to give him the chip, and then seeing him walk away. How much extra gravitas and threat it would add. The fear of the line just crossed.

      Del Rio is meant to be seen as someone already off their hinges I feel, since you just looked at this scene you might not know but over the course of a couple missions we get more and more hints that he’s got something against Chief and ultimately culminates in this scene. Dude’s an egomaniac with a control fetish, and is dishonorably discharged for leaving the Master Chief (who’s been adrift in space for 4 years like WHAT LMAO) on Requiem. Hence why Lasky, the best boy, becomes Captain of Infinity

      I agree. In his first cutscene he's an actual Captain, considering his ship's safety and UNSC procedures. He's hinted as being mildly authoritarian but it's too undercooked to make this tantrum work. His reasoning prior to it is actually valid. The ship has to warn the UNSC and Cortana just fried the command deck, so leaving Requiem and decommissioning her is the protocol. The writing doesn't do nearly enough to make him an actual antagonist here, other than needing to be for "dramatic" purposes. His dismissal of the Chief doesn't make any real sense either, since as a senior officer he'd be more likely to take the Chief's warning seriously. Del Rio is just there to facilitate the moment for Cortana's dramatic tantrum, then he's removed from the plot off screen. Wack. Also the animation doesn't quite line up well enough to sell his delivery :P

    I saw someone else mention it, but DAMN how powerful this scene is when you know that Chief was trained as a soldier from the age of 6-7. It is INGRAINED in him to follow orders without question. For god-knows how long disobeying an order would have been unthinkable for him
    Really shows how much he cares about her, probably as much (maybe more) as he does his own Spartan 2's

    • @Solais1019
      @Solais1019 19 дней назад

      Well, part of his training was also to consider his highest priority - the safety of humankind as a whole. If he thinks an order threatens that, he is at full right to disobey it, as it contradicts the highest authority.
      In this case he judged that this order would compromise him and the rest of the human race. He knew it was a race against time and falling back was not an option, and without an AI he can work well with, he can't go into the situation blind.

His hesitation to remove it, his attempt to dissuade Del Rio as he demands Chief's arrest and the scene that follows where he gives them a way off the Infinity pretty much seals it for me. He couldn't disobey orders because it would affect his service record. Letting Del Rio make the mistake of leaving Chief and Cortana behind when returning to Earth gives Lasky the opportunity to take over as Captain of Infinity.
