Imagine what these people could’ve made if their sets weren’t limited to paintball arenas. This was made a while ago, yet the CGI and props still hold up today
I was gonna bring up some bad CGI parts, but you know what. This thing is 10 fricking years old and I felt more Halo from rewatching this, than watching Master chief action scenes in the new Halo show. I feel so robbed that we didn't get a show with this quality.
@@sados6497CGI would've been better, the same guy who made Lord of the Rings was directing this too, this was the only edited section they got somewhat finished
considering they'd been fighting the covenant for over two weeks on earth i'd say orbital resources were minimal if any. The UNSC fleet by the time of halo 2 wan't even a hundred strong (not counting prowlers and corvettes seeing as they don't even field MACs). Less than ten cruisers, under 80 frigates and destroyers, and some unknown number of prowlers (do field nuclear mines). The 300 orbital platforms might as well been dead in the water after a cluster goes dark or just cant get coverage over that part of africa.
Joseph Dundee it’s a story that happens to involve extra story in interesting military tactics, let people nerd out over it, and stop being killjoy. Also, why are you here bitching?
This footage was actually the test footage that Neill Blomkamp and Peter Jackson where using in order to try and prove to the studios that a live action Halo film could be made. It’s a shame we never got to see the finished product.
you actually have better than that today, but you terminated morons can't stop crying about it not being like you want it to be. At least I can enjoy how butthurt you are you salty kids
The best part is that I believe that this was part of District 9's development, and that is how District 9 was made. I may be wrong, so don't crucify me. But, this was wild for the era. The CGI is on point. What gets me is the Spiker being shot semi-auto, because the brutes knew humans were practically soft-body targets.
Yeah, it really does a good job of showing how humanity was losing during the Human Covenant war. People are used to seeing guys get hit by plasma but as soon as that ODST got hit with a spiker round it really makes you go “oh shit”
@Kagamine Rin loves oceania part of indonesia uwu:3 Spartans are seem to be considered as if they're the last resort, humanity's only hope for survival.
Why can't real Halo fans appreciate the lack of effort and lots money spent to show CHEEKS by paramount Halo show. When Kim Kardashian shows her Cheeks it's ok but when Master CHEEKS shows his everyone hates it. Hypocrites. Let's hope 343s new wide audience likes ASS.
the main reason isn't lack of skill, talent or funds to make a good show. the main reason is they have to shove (THE MESSAGE) whenever possible, and the bigger the franchise, the bigger the target for distortion and make it a sick parody. And they love to destroy anything that inspires and stirs the imagination. They don't bow to (THE MESSAGE) they get cut off.and a person's got to eat. so yes, they're getting payed to destroy beloved franchises. "Go woke,go broke" it's a myth.if it were true, people like Kathleen Kennedy would have been kicked along time ago by the shareholders, because the ONLY bottomline,is and always has been, making money. it's more like "You HAVE to go woke,or you REALLY go broke.and homeless.and possibly beaten by a screeching mob with serious mental ilnesses."
@Sedition Case Right, real weird seeing people saying a decade in the comments. This came out around the time of Halo 3. (obviously) Fifteen years ago. We're getting old.

Everyone is talking about the guy who stuck a banshee mid flight but can we talk about the absolute mad lad that had multiple spikes through his arm pinning him to a wall yet still manage to kill some brutes with his battle rifle in one hand
@@deltadude7417 Also that one marine who managed to get onto the warthog's turret and kill a few brutes before taking a spike to.. i'd wanna say the shoulder, would be the only thing that made him just... flop the way he did.
What really makes this hit so hard is the whole composition. Real and well done props and sets, the way it is filmed more like a war documentary than an actual action scene, and the effects that feel very real and violent. No eyesearing colors, everthing is as dirty as you would expect on a battlefield, no bombastic explosions of fire, but violent spouts of dirt and srapnel, no fancy coregraphys but just people scrambling about trying to survive, no super high esotheric stakes but a simple mission goal. It all works so well together and makes the whole thing have a feeling of realness that only the ODST trailer matched. And thats where the new show is faling in all categories. Really should have done a down to earth human perspective, more an Fullmetal Jacket than Power Rangers.
Sorry I'm 10 months late, but I wanted to disagree with you. Making Halo feel realistic shouldn't be the goal per see. I think what we all enjoy about this short video, is the effort gone into making live action adaptation of a game we've grown up with, and played for thousands of hours. The creators of the new show, didn't. You really hit the hammer on the head by calling it a passion project. This was a group of dedicated people who wanted to make something cool. With, in all honesty, basic physical/ practical effects, as well as superb computer graphical ones. I fully believe a dedicated team with the same passion can create something like this, to the same degree. It should require lots of money, but for a motivated teams, cheaper alternative can be found. This should not be a one off thing, something like this can be created again.
SinDawg030 i believe the director of these shorts dropped this project to develop district 9, the same guy who did chappie, i believe. it's on the Halo wiki how a movie was set in production back on 07, but so on and so on, then district 9. thus the same gritty style action present in both Halo Landfall and District 9. because of the director
Something I appreciate more about this and ODST now as an adult that I didn't really notice when I was much younger was how this really contextualizes why the Spartans are held in such high regard. These soldiers are trying their fucking _best;_ they're not lazing around and letting chief do all the work, they genuinely need his help and are putting up the best fight they can possibly muster until he can arrive. It adds a more gritty look at the stakes, makes you appreciate more what you're actually fighting for in game.
@@Pinewellgaze I was confused until I realized that "they" meant the space marines and not the covenant. No, it's hard enough keeping those suicidal idiots alive without adding on by killing them yourself. Similar though tactics for when your generally out of ammo: goad a covenant into attacking melee, play toro, kill said covenant with a back attack and you're done. Also, never underestimate the lowly plasma pistol. Near limitless supply, and you can either lay out fire all day or blow through them with charged shots.
@@TheBurningWarrior oh shit lol I thought he meant the Marines I'm always against killing the Marines, and I go to great lengths to try and keep them alive in game... So I got slightly triggered and didn't read into it enough lol
I wish there was a game made about unsc’s marines and the struggles they must overcome and the process of ranking up to be better respected among the marines. I feel like that would be a perfect side story for Halo lore kinda like Halo 3: ODST
They'll ruin it and then it'll get panned hard by critics and audience alike and get cancelled. Since when has Hollywood respected original video games story and characters. Heck they even found thier way into video games and Ruined Halo 5. They always try doing it their own way and it always ends up being sub-par. Let's see how the story evolves after the shitshow that was Halo 5. Waiting for Halo Infinite...
10 years later, I still can't believe how good a depiction of Sci-Fi warfare this is. Most depictions of "Fodder" type nameless characters just die to the silliest things. Here we see the armor doing its job. Marines and ODSTS are getting wounded, but not killed outright and it is so much more engaging to us the viewer as a result. If this was any lesser production, that marine at 6:21 would have just died from the blast. Instead, we see him get up again and finish off a reckless Brute Chieftain drunk on blood with the iconic Rocket Launcher. Stellar piece of media.
Though in lore he definitely would have died because plasma just straight up boils everything around it, especially a relatively big one like a fuel rod.
The folks who made that trailer were veteran filmmakers cultured enough to know proper science-fiction references from literature and realistic depictions of warfare from documentary footage and films outside of pop-culture. The same cannot be said of random management executives.
@@wolftamer5463 not necessarily. plenty of marines in lore will survive indirect plasma hits or at least a single direct hit from small arms, it just doesn't look pretty.
I'm still impressed by this, for this level of editing and cgi, this was way ahead of it's time and should've been thrown all of the funds for this type of style to be made into a movie.
Even now I still watch this from time to time to remember the hype and fun. Lol I am excited for halo infinite but it's just not the same as it was for halo 3

Because it is realistic, unpolished, and these are actual human beings fighting, and not some poorly written filler characters blabbing their mouths and telling you what is going on instead of showing. There are so many small details, like the robotic voice warning of the banshees like it is the war time radio that would announce air threat warnings. There is the marine medic running around doing her job in that hell trying to save people. People get hurt, they show emotion, pain, fear, and heroism. The explosions are actual explosions that grenades and rpgs make and not some hollywood fuel canister explosions. This feels so real to an actual battlefield that it is insane.
@@s0ulshot it definitely gives the desperation that halo should have for the marines. I mean we have all this without any Spartans at all. It would be a great intro to how difficult the force is to fight. Then once we see the Spartans things feel a tad less desperate until the eventual flood reveal and everything is hopeless again and terrifying again
Because there was heart and care put into this and it was for the fans. Not for 40yo Jane and here 3 kids who think the show is based off the Foo Fighters song (no hate to them)
LynxenX correct ... what was suppose to be the halo movie became “district 9“ and the team still kept a lot of the props for halo ... aesthetically you can see how similar guns a ships are in district 9 to the halo universe
This. This is what changed my actions when I play a Halo game as Master Chief. Ever since I was a little kid and I saw this trailer there was such a build-up of guilt and pity that every time I play a game like Halo or others like Call of Duty I try my hardest to make sure every trooper makes it out alive. The number of times I've loaded the last checkpoint because that one marine got obliterated by a grenade from an enemy I could've killed in time.
That's why I couldn't rest until I got that achievement in Halo 1 anniversary, The Silent Cartographer... Every Marine on that beach survived and I'm proud of that.
Props to the medic marine, poor girl was running all over the place trying her best to tend everyone while risking the chance of getting spiked herself.

The amount of time that went into this short film is beyond amazing. From the acting, costume, CGI, production design is just amazing. Still always amazed on how beautiful this was.
I've figured out why this short is so good. It's believable. All the body cam footage makes you feel like you're right there with them. That on top of very good acting and radio chatter just really makes it feel technically correct.

To give you guys some context. This stuff was filmed as camera tests with Neill Blomkamp who was at some point considered to do the HALO MOVIE. All you see here are basically just CAMERA TESTS he did during his trial runs. This stuff is so good Bungie decided to use it as Trailer material for the third game. Which is incredible because you can see the stuff published which isn't happening too often. Anyway what basically happens is that the ODST "Search and Rescue Team" is trying to acquire the data on where the MASTER CHIEF is gonna land. This whole operation just for the LOCATION on where he is gonna land so they can be by his side before the covenant .. Man this is so good it's surreal the only missing thing is him actually making the movie but what can you do maybe some day in the future ...
United Potatoes Peter Jackson was also going to direct a Halo film, imagine how good it would be since he did Lord of the Rings, it would’ve been a masterpiece.
Still waiting for it. Forward Unto Dawn is neither a bad movie nor the one we want. Just look at this trailer. Dark, dirty and bloody. That's how a war with Covenant would be. Damn. I want it so bad. 14 years for Incredibles 2, hope not for HALO movie :D
This goes so hard. The intense atmosphere, the shaky camera and the lack of a hero and victory (besides locating MC) this AD of all things depicts war super well and also shows what halo would be like as a marine in live action, bungie was truly ahead of their time not just for making games but for advertisement aswell.
It's weird that nobody can come anywhere near to as good as this, even with the technology we have today. Actually, I suppose it makes sense. It's not about the tech. It's about the passion, and the want and drive to make something memorable, and unrealistically fantastical. Nobody who handles Halo seems to have that anymore, and the ones that do aren't allowed to do it.
The props, the sound effects, the costumes are all too great. The only thing that could improve is the cgi. But for the time it's still very good when mixed in the gritty tone.
Yes, it's not about the effects. Props, real locations, real sized sets and etc makes for a better movie overall. And when you add passion into it, then we get this result, instead of that half baked crap we got with the series. Even the writing is bad.
Halo Landfall shows what we would get if the person in charge of the movie/show would actually know the feel, the look, the mood of Halo. This was made by someone who actually cared and was passionate about Halo. That is why this test footage has been important to Halo fans since it released. It is a symbol of something we will never get. Because the people in charge of Halo now, just don't care about it as they used to. This footage and what we get now is perfect proof.
it's a shame they couldn't get him to do a movie - my friends and i were so geeked out at the idea when this came out. still holds up so well so many years later
Detail I never noticed before; the medic uses her own body to shield the marine pinned to the wall after she warns them about the incoming plasma, and only after the round hits does she move to cut him free. Love that.
That's what Halo is imo, the struggle of Humanity for survival, brothers and sisters in arms setting aside any differences and any dispute to fight for a greater good, knowing that in the face of extinction, every human life is precious as we are all one family. I can just imagine the bonds you'd create with people from very different cultures if we were to fight an alien invasion together.
Medic’s are the most scarred in the battlefield. I mean, infantry watch their brethren collapse and fall and you juat gotta keep on pushing. Medic’s watch as a suffering soldier gasps his last wishes as if they could do anything about it, wishing they could have done more. Its just really sad
That’s war. Medics are the fucking shit. Watch saving private Ryan where they’re trying to just save a guys life and the nazis were such shit bags that they shot the barely alive soldier in the head. Just to fuck with the medics. They seen too much.
That corpsman is definitely one of the MVPs here. Poor girl running around while being under fire trying to save as many Marines as she can. The scene of that Marine spiked to the wall screaming in pain from the vibration of her saw no doubt forever replaying in her mind.
I mean... the vibrations "could" have made it worse, but I think the main problem was the giant hole the spike round left in his arm. Also medics never get the props they deserve, they always risk it to help the troops.
The best part about this is that it makes the soldiers look capable. You could imagine them combating insurrectionists but also see them as sensible soldiers instead of mindless NPCs.
I think a big statement across halo media was that while the UNSC was super far behind the covenant in energy technology and space travel, they had retained superior ground warfare tactics and strategy whereas if the covenant couldn't just take something or convince a race to join them, they just glassed them. So when humans are holding something they want enough that they can't laser it from space, they really start to lose. The strength and jealousy of the elites and brutes and raw waves of grunts only worked out against colonial security forces and pockets of grunts literally exhausted of ammo.
the scene of the guy feeling a lot of pain because of the thorn the guy taking the grenade from the Brute and throwing it at the banshhe The guy shooting even though he was injured And the tcdo shooting sniper, and blowing up the Brute It makes you respect them, and have more empathy too.
As dated as the VFX look, this still has some of the hardest Halo action I’ve ever seen. It really captures just how fucked the human race was before the Spartans came to be. Yeah it takes place moments before Halo 3’s opening, but I remember reading one of the books and it was just loss after loss after loss. The humans were hopeless to stop the Covenant. I really wish Neil got a chance to make his Halo movie, but if it weren’t for the cancellation, we wouldn’t have gotten District 9.

This trailer all in all - even if it didn't really represent the feel of what Halo 3 was actually like, was still so cinematic and gritty that it was almost realistic. And that is what makes this trailer better than any promotional material since Reach. The trailers on their own good at building up hype, but they never build on anything, never set the tone in the same way that Landfall or Believe did.
I though it caught the feel just right. Your just seeing the perspective of a normal marine instead of an unstoppable war machine like Chief. Normal marines have it rough.
this and the "believe" ad campaign make me so nostalgic. Honestly, the feel and atmosphere of the Halo universe was so good in the Halo 3 days, and now everything's just so shiny and futuristic and generic that it's just uninteresting. I fell in love with what Bungie had made like with no other game before or since, and to have lost that is really upsetting. Just waiting on Halo 3 anniversary
New Halo just lacks the same stakes as original trilogy. Instead of a genocidal conglomeration of (mostly) mislead aliens trying to eradicate humanity in a one-sided war, it's giant robots lead by evil Cortana who want to enslave organic life. Cristopher Burch, it's more like dedicated fans doing Halo better than 343i doing Halo; go figure.
You're not alone on that one. Its sad to think I cared about NO OTHER game when Halo 3 was in its prime and I had gotten on Xbox live for the first time to play this with old friends. Now its even easy to forget the good old days if it wasn't for me stumbling on a video like this.. Nothing stays the same in anything in life I suppose, for better or worse. The utterly badass memories still remain though haha
Ya!! I got on live only for halo 3 too. It was pure magic experiencing all the live content after playing the campaign obsessively, and that atmosphere took over my whole life for awhile. I had a pretty interesting/active life growing up, but to say halo 2 and 3 are actually by far the happiest and most magical memories of my childhood.... It really says something
God I love this short, it's such an engaging fight to watch, you can feel the desparation, the CG is straight out of 2007 but that literally doesn't matter because the actors played their parts so well it made it believable that they were absolutely terrified, fighting for their life, and carrying on knowing they probably weren't going to survive, but completing their mission meant that the world had a chance. I love this short and We are ODST, they're works of art. I can see Marty and Michael were conceptualizing the music for Reach here already with the driving drum beats.
What gets me is I wish they showed more of the brutes, more covenant vehicles, even knowing the CGI may not have “held up” it was still good enough for me to want more
Yeah, I can't tell what parts are supposed to be 'bad CG'. The tables of marine helmets, and the partially built warthog? Are those CG, or are they props? The worst part of this is we know what the marines and ODSTs were doing whilst the Master Chief was on Delta Halo for months: HIDING IN THEIR BUNKERS.
Such a shame this is so much better than the Paramount show...why couldn't we get this instead? This clip is over a decade old and still holds up, imagine what could've been if they had the go-ahead to make a movie. Amazing to see this battle scene line up with the opening of the Halo 3 game too....instead we get this non-canon shit from Paramount
*sigh* it's sad that they stated it's non-canon so they'd be able to use the Halo influence, without making it a show about halo. Just some weird fanfiction sci-fi shit with a Halo skin.
Are we not going to talk about the one marine that got shot by a SPIKER and got stuck to a wall just to lift his battle rifle and kill the brute that shot him into the wall AND continued to shoot even as the medic is cutting him out? Give that guy a purple heart man!
This has that realistic feel that I wanted the show to have so bad. It felt like Generation Kill in the halo universe. Hate this wasn’t what we got in a show…
I remember the day I saw this for the first time like it was yesterday. Realizing that we could have an entire movie or show like that to enjoy and cherish. Constantly checking back in on RUclips to see if there was any more made. Years went by and then we finally got word of a halo series, one with a huge budget, one with endless possibility. Our dreams were finally gonna come true, and the writers didn’t even bother playing the games. Have finally accepted that this 7 minutes is as good as it was ever gonna get and I will forever appreciate the people who poured themselves into making this masterpiece.
Nah writers just think they can make a better story so they make it up using halo set pieces. There is literally endless material between the games and books (which are canon as well).

These guys are heros, but at the same time the chief had a neural implant, the most expensive implant actually, and his implant has a tracker that he can activate, so I don't know why these men had to die when he could have just turned on his tracker. I love this trailer, but the chief got at least 2 people killed.
+goldenhedgehog9 No one really gives a shit. As far as I'm concerned, they didn't even have names. They are in no way important to the series. They serve as meat shields for the Chief most of the time.
Dragon Knight 56 No, they serve as meat shields for YOU when you play the games. In the lore, the chief tries his best to keep the men he fights with alive, and doesn't hide behind them while they get torn to pieces.
To this day I still think this the best piece of live action halo media we've had. Nothing else really sells the weight and power of these characters and weapons. And the way it ties into the start of Halo 3's campaign is just great.
This short film, less than 10 minutes long, has MUCH better graphics than many Hollywood action and sci-fi films in the last 10 years. You are drawn into this because it feels so vivid like you're watching found footage, that you could've been there in person. I can't remember ever being this impressed by an action or sci-fi movie. Every single person who worked on the film needs to create their own company because if they make movies like this, you know I'll be watching every one of them.
The CGI work is abysmal but that isn't rhe point. Everything else: the tone, sounds, the acting, the intensity, the gritty realism, is by far and away generationally superior to every moment in the Halo show.
Not just Blomkamp. The original writer who wrote the script was Alex Garland, or also wrote 28 Days Later. He is also a hardcore Halo fan so it is even better
Coming back to this video after watching the pilot of the Halo TV show has put the final nail in the coffin for modern Halo for me. The budget for Landfall must have been a fraction of the TV show, yet you can tell it was made by people who actually cared for the franchise and wanted it to be as authentic as possible. After the immense disappointment of Infinite and now one of the worst TV shows I have ever seen in my life I am left with no doubt that 343 must be replaced, and the franchise must be placed in competent, caring hands.
Has to be a tough job considering plasma can inflict some serious burns, needles also leave tons of shrapnel after they explode, and spikers are a nightmare. Covenant weaponry overall is terrifying, I'd hate to be a med in that situation.

@The Watcher Dunno mate, Alien invasions tend to cause Abit of internet troubles.
considering they'd been fighting the covenant for over two weeks on earth i'd say orbital resources were minimal if any. The UNSC fleet by the time of halo 2 wan't even a hundred strong (not counting prowlers and corvettes seeing as they don't even field MACs). Less than ten cruisers, under 80 frigates and destroyers, and some unknown number of prowlers (do field nuclear mines). But, this was wild for the era. The CGI is on point. What gets me is the Spiker being shot semi-auto, because the brutes knew humans were practically soft-body targets.
I like how they portrayed the brutality of the Spiker here, looks horrible getting hit by one.

Very well said

From what I hear, this style was highly influential to District 9. I imagine from the glowing review that you would like it.
👏
If they ever make a Halo movie, then the combat scenes should be as gritty and dark as this was.

Every human fought a Heroic fight that day and became Legendary...
Though in lore he definitely would have died because plasma just straight up boils everything around it, especially a relatively big one like a fuel rod.

Nobody who handles Halo seems to have that anymore, and the ones that do aren't allowed to do it.

To be totally honest, while I love D9...
I would trade it and all memory of it for a halo movie of the caliber this short delivers.

I can't stop watching this it's sooooo good. Even how the drills screw in the Sniper Rifle barrels, how the weapons shake slightly when the rack they are opening up on stops. Man. NEIL PLEASE COME BACK!!!
I really wish the paramount series would have gone with a faithful plot, it could have been really well done but of course, they had to mess it up
If they do adapt New Mombasa and the ODST, Neil has to be the one to do it. No one does gritty war scifi like Blomkamp.
Just watched the new episode and then watched this. Although the Paramount show has an exponentially higher budget, just compare this to the opening of episode 1. It’s insane how this scene is more memorable despite the discrepancy in budgets.

The reach trailer was the best one
What about the halo infinite trailers ? What your opinion on them ? Seriously asking.

Foehammer not gonna be a halo 3 anniversary lol
The Remember Reach trailer is a tear jerker too
God I love this short, it's such an engaging fight to watch, you can feel the desparation, the CG is straight out of 2007 but that literally doesn't matter because the actors played their parts so well it made it believable that they were absolutely terrified, fighting for their life, and carrying on knowing they probably weren't going to survive, but completing their mission meant that the world had a chance. I love this short and We are ODST, they're works of art.
I can see Marty and Michael were conceptualizing the music for Reach here already with the driving drum beats.
No replies.... unacceptable
@@proudfathervince6835 I think that just means everyone agrees right?
What gets me is I wish they showed more of the brutes, more covenant vehicles, even knowing the CGI may not have “held up” it was still good enough for me to want more
Yeah, I can't tell what parts are supposed to be 'bad CG'. The tables of marine helmets, and the partially built warthog? Are those CG, or are they props?
The worst part of this is we know what the marines and ODSTs were doing whilst the Master Chief was on Delta Halo for months: HIDING IN THEIR BUNKERS.

Just some weird fanfiction sci-fi shit with a Halo skin.
they were made with different purpose, this one is just a short and the paramount one is a full tv show.

Anyone still get goose bumps from this 11 years later? This could have been such an amazing intro to a Halo TV series or movie.
Exactly. This puts you in their shoes, you feel what they feel. It's not just a movie, it's an emotional experience.
The CGI work is abysmal but that isn't rhe point. Everything else: the tone, sounds, the acting, the intensity, the gritty realism, is by far and away generationally superior to every moment in the Halo show.
We desperately need Neil Blomkamp back! Why didn't he get the Halo show?! He's been open to it for years now!
Not just Blomkamp. The original writer who wrote the script was Alex Garland, or also wrote 28 Days Later. He is also a hardcore Halo fan so it is even better
@@PolymurExcel but I heard the last one working on it was DB Weiss, Alex was first but they changed writter a couple of times after him.

Coming back to this video after watching the pilot of the Halo TV show has put the final nail in the coffin for modern Halo for me. The budget for Landfall must have been a fraction of the TV show, yet you can tell it was made by people who actually cared for the franchise and wanted it to be as authentic as possible.
