Released exclusively for Sega Genesis, the third and final game in the Golden Axe trilogy sticks rigidly to the template laid out by its arcade forbear. Curiously, the game never received a physical release outside of Japan, which is all the more strange when you consider the entire dialogue is in English.
If you've played either of the other games, you'll know exactly what to expect - choose a hero and beat up enemies, blast them with magic, and generally have a good time whilst doing it. The roster of characters has been expanded to four, and the developers implemented a sort-of special move system, allowing players to execute character-specific moves via a combination of D-pad and button presses. It's also possible to parry enemy blows by pushing away and attack buttons simultaneously, although this won't protect you against every assault, and you'll find it has a nasty habit of activating when what you really wanted to do was change direction and attack.
As with previous games, the magic system makes a return. Collect the blue phials from the scurrying thieves, with more potions unleashing increasingly powerful spells. It's now also possible to increase your maximum health by collecting a heart power-up from one of the thieves, but there's likely to be some heated debate in multiplayer over who gets the item, for they're limited in number.
While visuals aren't the game's strong suit, it does feature some rather excellent music. The thumping drums evoke the Conan-esque grandeur the series has always tried to replicate, and it helps carry the action along at pace.
Disappointingly, the mountable beasts, a staple for any Golden Axe game, are next to useless in this iteration. Enemies can avoid their attacks far too easily, so they play a much more limited role here. In fact, it's more advantageous to leave the saddle vacant, luring the AI into trying to mount the beast and landing some solid blows while they're unable to fight back.
If you're a fan of the series then Golden Axe III is worth playing. It's entertaining enough in single player, but coop is where it shines. Branching paths give the game a degree of replayability, so there's at least an incentive go come back to the game, even if you manage to beat it.

3 has the best soundtrack among them, not only for series, it's one of my favorite soundtracks of all time
Sega had no idea what a good thing they had going. If they played their cards right and listen to the consumers, they could have been big like Sony.

They chose not to continue making consoles because of low sales in Japan not the US. They were selling very well in the US. It was an honor thing. They chose to stop.

This is my favorite Golden Axe game, and overall one of my favorite Hack and Slash games.
Golden Axe 2 is the best feeling to play control-wise, but Golden Axe 1 & 3 have my favorite sprites & soundtracks.
To ne GA3 gas the best gameplay feeling.
In my opinion is the most complete and beautiful of all GA. More characters, alternative paths, blocking moves, lot of attack moves, personal magic attacks ( without these magic jars I mean ), coop attacks, and coop magic powers!
And good and bad ending.
By the way, the soundtracks are amazing too!! I had this jewel and means a lot of the best days of my life.

Yeah I really don't understand all the hate it gets when it has the most complex combat. Supposedly it's because the graphics are ugly, but they don't even look bad. It's just the enemy designs that look like crap but I'm fine with that. Who cares if the generic pawns look like losers? They're pawns. The Knights, monsters & the bosses still look badass.

This is better than the first 2 games because the A-i was much smarter. It was harder to lure enemies off cliffs or have them fall into attack patterns. The magic is weaker in this game but it's more challenging. I'm surprised this wasn't released in North America at the Genesis peak in 1993. Golden Axe 3 is one of my favorite games on the console.

The music composition of this game is totally underrated. I hope LizardCube makes the Golden Axe games the next beat 'em up series to revive after the success of Streets of Rage 4 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge!
Yoooo I keep saying the same thing, Lizard Cube might be the best devs for bringing back GA in 2D like they did SOR. Sometimes I wonder why there’s so many complications to remake a game
@@patrickvalmont Complications arise from the IP holders and publishers refusing to greenlight projects from indie developers willing to work hard to bring a dormant franchise back to life. Nowadays publishers don't want to finance any projects that won't be triple A titles.

She has the most powerful attack in the game (a quick kick, pressing forward + attack and jump together). You can dispatch enemies and bosses easily with that (not sure if it was intended to be such a high damage move).

The variety in this game is its locations are strong and the music has more of a SoR feel to it. They make you fight your companions like Rushing Beat Ran/Brawl Brothers. If this game had a tighter game approach like Knights of the Round or Dungeons & Dragons. Boi!!!

This version and characters are the best I like most. If you can play two players, it will be better. I remember two characters can make better fighting and power if you have face to face each other. 😁 Every plots is interesting!

Love this game. Mediocre visuals but one of the deepest movesets in any beat em up ever. Great music and gameplay and the best enemy a.i. in the series.
Also the variant lizard mount with the extra long tongue is actually OP. So to say all the mounts are worthless isn't accurate. The other one's can be useful aswell but I prefer using the expanded movesets of the fighters anyways.
And of course you are comparing actual graphics with all graphics, Also may u mentioned that not all the games with fabulous graphics have actually a nice story/plot to tell...

It does not have a deeper moveset than Capcom's AvP and Super Double Dragon or Final Vendetta.

I like and enjoyed GA3 and I think if Sega got Yu Zo and his team who work on SOR2 with same cartridge size memory who knows they could have done something special but still GA3 is fine for what it is

Enemies increase in strength as you move further in the levels...the boss could simply send some of his strongest minions to deal with you right at the start. :)
Meu favorito é o Golden Axe 3 depois do 2 e tenho uma dica de combate pra ganhar muito ponto cada fase que passa, matar inimigos ou chefes fora da tela usando ela, ele de espada ou bárbaro sem os inimigos e chefes gritar após ou antes de morrer ganha pontos multiplicados podendo também usar magias sem carregar tudo para expulsar matando sem escutar o grito deles morrendo que também os pontos são múltiplos e eu fiz com ela 2139 pontos Level SA e ele com espada 1558 pontos level AA no Hard, alguns chefes que são Heróis possuidos ou a Águia tem que matar na raça sem poder jogar fora da tela, e eu espero que essa dica ajude a fazer múltiplos pontos como eu fiz na época do Mega Drive 3 Brasil.
The sprite work is excellent, but most of the backdrops look like I made them (I'm something of an amateur pixel artist).

Golden Axe 3 looked great and I loved the variety of moves and special attacks that the game offered, but the music and SFX took a step back compared to Golden Axe 1 and 2. The music in the first 2 games felt like Conan the Barbarian, while this one felt like The Golden Child.

How do you evade the ultimate attack of the final boss?
I don't think you can - if he casts it, you'll be hit. The only thing you do is make sure you stay close and keep him busy with melee attacks to minimise the chance he'll cast it.

Only shadows flicker because a lack of transparency effects.
Sega Genesis one looks pretty average but I must be in minority though because I really prefer the first Golden Axe aesthetic (ARCADE) . I was never fan of those big sprites in later games. It felt clunkier. I would love if later games looked like first one on arcade, for me that one was perfect. Maybe it is just nostalgia.

Your assessment is correct. Golden Axe seems to be the only Sega series that has suffered with worse growing sequels during this era. While Shinobi and Sonic got some really good ones. Golden Axe 2 and 3 are just bad games.

Gameplay seems smoother and controls more responsive. And it has cool character like the jaguar man… I’m liking it playing it now.
