Ok so House Of The Dragon Episode 3 is now out and the episode is filled with easter eggs, lots of plot points that pull from the books and an ending that sets up some major things for the future. Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking it all down and as always make sure you're subscribed as we're gonna be covering the show every single week.
Now this episode gives us a time jump of three years that sees a new character coming into the fold who we'll talk about more in just a bit. When we last left them Daemon and Corlys Valerion had just formed a pact in order to stop Crabfeeder and his forces.
This union is symbolised in the opening shot which shows his banner of the seahorse along with the embers of fire representing house targaryen.
We see that one of Corlys' ships is being burned by Crabsfeeder forces and this metaphorically shows how much they are destroying his fleet. Corlys in the book was said to have amassed the biggest navy in the world and his shipping realms allowed him to amass more money than the Lannisters. Though Crabfeeder initially started just ransacking pirates, this eventually moved to the bigger ships and he torturned the crew like what we see here. He hammered nails through their hands similar to a crucifixion and let the crabs feast on his victims before the tide rolled in and they drowned.
This opening is so powerful and we hear Caraxes high pitched whistle before the dragon roles in and destroys the landscape. Poor lad thought he was gonna get saved but the man gets smashed like that like button.
Can't really show most of this as I don't wanna get Daemonetised but Crabfeeder ends up hiding in the caves which forces Daemon to get his hands dirty and go in there later. Now arrows rain down which forces Daemon to flee and it's likely that several attacks like this happened which the dragon having to leave due to the bombardment from the sky.

Viserys acknowledges that Rhaenyra takes after Daemon. And this is paralleled at the end with both of them covered in blood and dragging a dead foe behind them.

Yes! I loved Rhaenyra's outfit she was wearing when sitting under the tree. The details of the leather scales were so cool, and switching her to all black because she's angry/grieving/alone is a great detail.

Can't believe this breakdown didn't mention the scene where Rhaenyra returns the next morning to the feast, all bloody and dragging the dead boar. Seriously bad-ass, and one upping her father's hunting skills.
If Bobby B had been around during this time, when it came to hunting, he would have been fine with Rhaenyra and insulted Viscerys so heavily he would have curled into a ball.

Right you see how slowly people are starting to recognize here inherent strength...which is in stark contrast to her father and uncle both weak men who are incredibly insecure... Daemon chooses to disregard his life and embrace brutality to cope while his brother fights to please everyone...its also interesting how she and Daemon are both bloodied but she saved by her fighting skills and the knight she chose and her uncle is saved by crazy strong plot armor as well as his fighting skills...also she has these great moments naturally come to her, which she handles with class and dignity while simultaneously her uncle plunges himself into chaos embracing brutality and death

Isn't anyone bringing up the fact that Crabfeeder ambush was entirely Laenor's idea? He said they needed to flesh bring out the enemy from the caves. And that was Daemon! The kid is smart one here. He is also a dragon rider ffs. Props to the Sea Snake's kid!
Just it was "the kid" Robb Stark that sacrificed 2,000 troops at the Whispering Wood to split Lannister forces and allowed him to capture Jamie Lannister. That was an even bigger reason why Catelyn's release of him (Jamie) without consultation was such a big deal. Lots of men had to die for that leverage and she let it go, sowing dissent in Robb's ranks.

I may have missed some details here, but I thought everyone believed that only Targaryens could ride dragons, and had to bond with a hatchling from birth. A Velaryon on dragonback would break the myth that only the Targaryens could, and therefore exclusively worthy of the throne... right? 🤔

Well Viserys caught the second option, a normal old brown stag, because he couldnt get across the white one. This is a comparaison of him. As the brown stag, he is not the heir that should have been (Rhaenys was), he is the worse choice, the second that should have been considered. He is also plain and common and should hAve never been king. The capturing of the brown stag meant deception, like the deception of him being king where he lets down the realm and its people. His failure to kill it in the first stab is a reflection if his personality: He makes wrong choices and does not now how to accomplish things on the first time. He is also indecesive and takes time to learn (unfortunatly as seen by him finally helping daemon after 3 years ffs), and hesitates to finally kill the stag on second blow. He is just innefective as a ruler and since the hunt was for aegon, it may apply to him as well.
Rhaenyra seeing the white stag meant that she
is a worthy successor for the throne, the one that should be anyway. As contrary to Viserys, Rhaenery is a decesive ruler. She immediatly without doubting decided to let the stag live, as she saw herself in it: a special and rare creature that men viciously want to tear apArt, instead of letting it live peacefully and see the beauty in it (Rhaenyra’s potential) and how its existence is trivial.

I saw him failing to kill the stag, as him having a kind heart that does not like killing! Agree on everything else, but the reason he is a bad targaryen King, is because they are supposed to be killers! Fire and blood being their words, pointing to this. If this was not a song of ice and fire, he would be a good King.

This episode was awesome! And the hair was something I noticed too! I think they even used a different wig with the hairline pulled backed and they thinned out the hair because it looked like he even had less hair.

It was interesting to see Viserys get almost plastered when he’s without his cupbearer, Rhaenyra. While he could order her to keep serving him wine, she could have cut him off as well.
Really wanted to see daemon vs crabfeeder but the opening and the battle gave a great representation of the battle for the step stones. Gosh, was the hart hunt final scene heartbreaking but seeing the actual 'white hart' saved by rhaenyra helped.

@@Syisulis at the time which, was just a few minutes ago, I was left disappointed when we didn't get to see Daemon and the Crabfeeder duke it out. But like you said he didn't seem like a fighter. Rather he seemed more like the guy who's able to inspire actually good fighters to his side. He's also the face of the enemy and he probably wasn't the real general controlling things but just a monster for people to be scared of.

Alicent's "your Grace" seemed like she is still giving him respect for his kingship and being her best friend's father. She seems to still be holding on to hope for their friendship.
She is in denial that will never be the same she will have to protect her child and herself it's done...Viserys messed it up

I dont buy the doting best friend act as we will see from her actions later on.
Alicent only cares about her duty to her father and house. Perhaps part of her is concerned about Rheanyra but at the end of the day her concern over their friendship is disingenuous. She clearly flexed her Queen role in the God's wood and only goes to speak to Visyres to secure her son in the line of succession as instructed by her father. She doesn't have a backbone. She gets on my nerves as much as Sansa did.

I can see her turning though, following her fathers plan to try and overthrow Rhaenerya. If she stayed good and vouched for Rhaenerya I could almost forgive that she fucked her best friends dad.
Crabfeeder was never shown to be a fighter he seemed more like a brutal tactician that’s why he got a off screen death he was just a stepping stone
In the book he got his head sliced off but was way more brutal getting his torso diced like that

You realize he isn't as scary as what people describe him as, he is deathly scared of the dragons (always looking up), and cowardly in the sense he sends people to fight for him and won't fight in any one-on-one matches. He also probably set traps in caves too

Great vid! I would just correct one single thing I noticed - rhaenyra targaryen wasn't uninterested in traditions and history in the first episode, she was just pretending she didn't care. And then she recited everything out of her head without any mistake into the great details. So her mindstate didn't change. She is just more herself, stopped pretending she is not interested in history.

Wow the battle scene was epic to me. I love Daemon and him dragging half of Crabfeeder was giving me goosebumps.
Not being to hear the dragon makes the battle terrible … they could have just had the dragon fly over head an rush the caves having more men
Daemon is an incredibly captivating character.
You need to seek help for that.
Watching the battle with Daemon at the end, you can tell that he is Jon's ancestor. When both get into real battle mode, badges. Can you imagine if those two were in an actual battle together? Enemies beware. Rhaenyra's story is also reflecting Daenerys's in navigating the politics of court. I kind of hope that Rhaenyra tells her father that she saw the white hart and see his face.
Jon Snow was the greatest TV Hero of the 2010's it's sad how they did him dirty in the end
I was hoping/expecting that when Daemon was pinned down with arrows in him, Caraxes would sense him or otherwise see him being mortally wounded and come to his aid. But, unless I missed it, Caraxes didn't even show up. I found that odd but maybe there's a simple explanation I'm not aware of.
Enemies beware? Allies be ware. Those two get more allies killed than any pair in fantasy.

Just finished … Master of Complaints made me laugh. Don’t know why, but I liked seeing the Sea Snakes forces. A diverse crew that looks bonded. Those two guys sharing that flask of water or whatever was cool. Obviously the last scene with Daemon and company was even cooler lol

love the different designs of the dragons. Ceraxes with his long body and legs as compared to Seasmoke. I really like how they are giving us lots of dragon action scenes for sure.
I think that the scene with laenor on sea smoke grabbing soldiers and throwinng them while cheering was the best scene of this episode

Seasmoke looked more like the new line of dragons, like Drogon etc... I can't wait to see what the rest look like. I am DYING to see Sheepstealer and hopefully the other two wild dragons. I currently hold the theory that the cuts from the throne on the king’s body symbolize the state of the family. Really the story of the show is going to be how a civil war is taken to the brink so many times, but the love between Viserys and Daemon keep it from breaking out time and again. External forces are always seeking to sow discord between the two brothers and when Viserys allows those forces a victory, the throne takes a toll. He cut himself when he disinherited his brother and lost a small part of himself when they became estranged.

i expected him to be a stupid one dimensional character , but well im suprised, he is much more complex
I like how Paddy portrays the burden of being King. He seems to just want the simple things in life, but is constantly being pulled in different directions by the vultures around him. He wants his family and a son. But he's constantly under pressure to do "what's best for the realm". Even mere hours after the burial of his late wife and son it's "back to business" with the council. Not to mention he is physically deteriorating as well as mentally and emotionally. Being King is literally killing him.

The interaction between Alicent and Viserys in front of the fire reminded me of King Henry the 8th's last wife, Catherine Parr. She sounds like a nurse maid of her older husband who doesn't go to bed on time. 😂

Then lets make him barely appear then when he gets screen time lets make it where he throws the entire war over one man! Such a brilliant tactian tots able to lead an army that is a thorn in the crowns side, oooooh yeah lets also not show the fight betwren the two big characters ooooooh my god yes brilliant we are grest writers and make grest shows.
makes the whole war pointless tbh if they could do this before they wouldnt need to waste the amounts of resources that they did
@@Gribbics Not showing it was actually a good idea, you get to imagine the situation instead of actually seeing it. Just because a minor villain at the start of the story doesn't show up a lot of times doesn't mean it's ultimately 'bad writing' and it doesn't even mean it's a waste. Just because the crabfeeder didn't show up more times than his own army doesn't mean the war was even pointless, Crabfeeder is suppose to be a tactician and a prominent person within the triarchy... now tell me why would he go out in the battlefield himself just to be burnt alive or decapitated when he can have his footsoldiers and archers go?
Hells, they might even show the battle scene between Crabfeeder and Daemon in episode 4 or some later episodes.

Alicent saying "your Grace" was notable, but then her calling Viserys by name later was also. She seemed to show she was still speaking as a friend trying to find a peaceful solution to dealing with his daughter. She still wants to be Raenerys' friend but at this point she seems to also think she can do that and still have her son on the throne. She's too busy listening to her father and not reading the room.

Damon should've had 100 arrows in him. The fact he still managed to kill the crab bul already injured is amazing enough. The scene was badass tho. Lol
Not so sure. They showed it was a windy day when he waived the white flag. The archers were pretty far away in an elevated position shooting at a moving target. Previously, they've been shooting at masses of men, ships and dragons.
His plot armor was thick. That was not good. It's been so long since we've had quality writing that we accept this as "cool". Good writing would have had him die but the battle be won bc of his sacrifice. This show is starting off where GoT left off. We all know thats not good.

@@rlh12345 I think it's kinda justified in this particular case because it's portraid as a stupidly dangerous thing that he only attempts when he's about to lose the glory he spent 2 years fighting for. We needed to get a sense of how close to dying he got for the scene to be effective

fun fact: you can actually pronounce it (Aegon) anyway you'd prefer, as long as that makes most sense to you. GRRM has said before that the pronunciations are not important, and that all are canon. He would rather the readers (tho i guess in this case, watchers) worry about the story more than how to pronounce his characters' names.

Great episode. I really enjoyed the final battle and how Daemon cleaved but the Crabfeeder. I was waiting for your review to confirm it was Laenor riding the dragon.

Ugh the fact the archers had worse aim than stormtroopers was good awful and the worst part pf the series so far...I mean at least we know Jedis have the force... Daemon just has that 9billion HP plot armor...but agreed great episode and series other than the archer part🤮

Well the beauty of the series is shes the best of BOTH brothers...and its why they both dote on her..had she been born male no one would even blink about her title to the thrown...but yeah her father is thoughtful and measured and her uncle is willful and strong...both are EXTREMELY weak because they lean way too far in an extreme direction and its only sheer luck, AND INSANE PLOT ARMOR, that Daemon is even alive...both men are weakened by their insecurities they both just handle them terribly
@@ChrisSmith-tu9bu bro Fr. The plot armor is crazy. Seeing him run thru 3-4 volleys of arrows and not getting hit is just annoying, the archers are stormtroopers all of a sudden. I hate writing like that so much
@@gaper1287 whats worse is theyve done such a good job that this oversight is particularly glaring..... it's was a huge brain fart for the show and what made me laugh was AFTER Daemon was FINALLY hit by some arrows that he ran faster than ever and defeated the Crab Feeder without a sweat... apparently they were trying to miss him with arrows because arrows power him up.. otherwise an unimpeachable show IMO..but damn they could have just had him dodge behind some well placed ships the whole time then focused on his fight with the crab feeder...oh well.. could have been a production thing behind the scenes
@@gaper1287 He was hot by three arrows. One on the upper chest, one by his stomach and one on his thigh. Also those archers are not sniping sharp shooters. Also, Daemon wasn't standing still but running at full speed.

Love the video, love the channel! I'm also loving the series so far and I'm wildly impressed that the showrunners, writers and actors have already managed to cause me to evolve the opinions I had of them based on The Rogue Prince and Fire & Blood. From what I'd read my attitude going in was fairly black & white, while both Blacks & Greens do horrible stuff I blamed the Greens for causing everything and felt they made Allicent Hightower come across as very ambitious and not the least bit sympathetic but she's a much more layered person on the show. Really everyone we've spent time with has shown layers to their character in my opinion. Can't wait for more!
This episode was BEAUTIFUL! I loved the kick up on action and that they jumped out the gate with Daemon on his Dragon and I absolutely LOVED IT!

im sure viserys have diabetes considering his wounds in general don't heal and has necrosis. he eats rich food and doesn't hunt much. even in the hunt he basically sits there and wait for the stag to be brought to him. he is a mind-oriented person instead of physical

The source material is inaccurate because it is from the Maesters' point of view.
I think the succession issue could've been resolved by having Rhaenyra be the queen and having Aegon ll be her successor. Stannis offered this to Renly which the latter refused.
I believe Rhaenyra would've been happier if she actually decided to give up her crown and become a dragon rider adventurer across Westeros and Essos. Arya got to do what Rhaenyra never go to do (Explore and have an adventure). If I were Rhaenyra I would've gladly given the crown to Aegon ll and done my own thing. Being king is a burden and it doesn’t give you the freedom of what you want to do as you think.
How the conflict should've been resolved
1. Have Rhaenyra hang out with Aegon ll a lot to make their relationship good.
2. Have Laenor's son or daughter marry Rhaenyra's firstborn son.
3. If Rhaenyra influences Aegon ll well, they can both have similar ideals.
It's messed up but it is the only practical solution I can think of.
I really feel bad for Viserys I. The politics in the world of Westeros regarding succession is ridiculous and stupid. However, it still mirrors our world's politics from the Ancient Times to the Modern Age.
I mentioned that last week about it being unreliable since the Maesters wrote it from second/third accounts since they didn't actually witness any of the events themselves. And the people themselves were not around to give their side of the story.

George said what is happening in the show is the real events. the books are just the source material
since the books are like history books in that world, the writers are using it as a stepping stone to paint the original events if that makes sense. which is why some stuff is changing but very little
